Today the UN is commemorating its 80th anniversary. I worked on the inside for 32 of those years. The UN was founded in reaction to a violent regime that, driven by a supremacist ideology, was committing aggression against its neighbors, occupying the territory of others, and perpetrating a genocide.
The inevitable result of Israeli state policy was the escalation of peaceful resistance as seen in the First Intifada to violent militancy as seen on October 7th.

Some Palestinians in Gaza have resorted to eating animal feed, grass, and even sand in order to not be as hungry. They are being murdered en masse at food distribution sites. Nobody can go in or leave, and everyone there is literally in danger of being murdered by Israel.
I am confident that eventually, the historical record will catch up. The collective memory of the human race is recording the Gaza genocide for what it is, and this is causing an irreversible generational shift between older people who support Israel and younger people who support a democratic state or federation.
And it's happening among Jewish people in the same way as everyone else.

I was watching a bbc report on this the other day video from actual medics, apparently they were unable to show all the footage due to the nature of it or something.
Oddly on or around Holocaust memorial day they showed video of liberation of the Concentration camps, which also depicted footage of emaciated people and horrific conditions etc, there is similar footage of Belsen for example.
Pictures of Jews behind barbed wire in the concentration camps, there are similar images from 1947 showing palestinians behide barbed wire (Thanks to the british as palestine was a british protectorate at the time) and similar images from the Balkans in the early 90s (the latter does show ethnic cleansing and it is cited historically as that) This was all shown on the news.

What I do believe is coming is the resurgence of computers through mobile phones. Everyone has a powerful computer in their pockets but isn't able to use them to their full potential. I wouldn't be suprised if android pushed out a proper android desktop experience letting android users get the full linux desktop experience when plugged into a monitor, mouse, and keyboard.
Phone performance is stronger than the average laptops/netbooks from 10 years age and they run linux fine for everyday use. Feels like a missed opportunity if someone doesn't drop a phone or os that lets you take advantage of modern hardwares capability. They could advertise it to families, mo more buying a pc for school, just get them hardware for their existing device, it can already do everything. Schools could use lapdocks, or tabletdocks, that could force school parental controls on devices while at school and still let them use it for their education while in class.

Sent a pull request to Audacity fixing a crash bug I'd been running into frequently. The cause was an out-of-bounds memmove. Classic C++ areas.
Anyway I got a fucking copilot review on my PR which left two comments, both completely wrong, one of which suggesting I reintroduce the out of bounds memory access. I'm furious!
You know back in my day, we had static analysis tooling that would give you exactly this kind of feedback, except it was correct. Now we have shit which only looks at the vibes of the source text and does no semantic analysis whatsoever, so of course it's just fucking wrong
I spent a couple of hours yesterday getting Audacity building, reproducing and diagnosing the bug, and wrapping my head around the complex logic in this part of the code so that I could implement a correct fix. To have copilot review my work, which I contributed back for free, is just so incredibly disrespectful to my time and effort.
static analysis was much better but it did not (does not) have correct output... You can absolutely confuse it with several valid code patterns (the one my company uses gets confused with using unique pointers for cleanup functions). But it was at least much better than that garbage
LLMs (next word guessing machines) are great for wrong answers only. The amount of bugs and technical debt being introduced won't be realized four another few years.

This is the lament of any skilled person encountering AI. You can get how this happens probabilistically: if you are commenting on C/C++ code, those comments are statistically likely to be valid. But anyone who is actually skilled in the language and avoids the rookie errors will get junk advice. What errors there are in your code, are rare and subtle in the training data. Guesses that the most common rookie errors are present don’t work.
There’s a great article on the LLMentalist. It talks about how LLMs do the same things that cold-reading “psychics” do: they make the generic sound specific when it isn’t.
esphome is another one doing that... I have a comment on a loop where I explicitly explain why I do a +1 on my counter (since hardware it controls is wonky in edge cases). Copilot (luckily behind low confidence) asks me "hey are you sure you wanted to do this? This adds +1 surely you did not mean to"...
damn. I'm sorry this happened. Everywhere I look, this crap is being introduced forcibly by people who have no understanding of anything, making people lives and jobs harder. Daily now, I have to fix mistakes copilot introduces in my VS C# projects, because it's been enabled company-wide, and I go to my old instinct of hitting tab to autocomplete snippets. But without the old intellisense, VS is just a fancy branded text editor with a shell integration.
