The first problem, which might seem small, is in how the company handles very basic stuff, like security certificates.

Manjaro has let their certificates expire 4 times now. It might seem like a very small issue, but it's extremely basic. Renewing certificates is extremely easy, and can be automated. Manjaro's inability to anticipate this or automate it isn't a good sign in terms of how seriously they take their security.

Manjaro also has the habit of trying to release things that aren't ready, without checking with the upstream devs first. One example is with the Asahi Linux project, where Manjaro decided that having Apple Silicon support early would be cool, and shipped a broken kernel.

This is what led to the "don't ship it" manifesto from various developers, and probably what led the Bottles developer to also ask distros to not repackage their software without talking to them first.

Another problem that arose was the use of the AUR in Manjaro. Except the AUR doesn't really work well on Manjaro. Because the AUR assumes you're using the latest Arch software, with the latest versions Arch releases. Which Manjaro doesn't, because they hold back packages for testing. Which means that installing stuff from the AUR can seriously break your Manjaro system if you're not careful.

Manjaro's AUR helper had a bug in it, that sent thousands of requests to the AUR's servers for each Manjaro user. This resulted in an involuntary DDOS attack, short for distributed denial of service

And then there are a few other issues. The project lead wanted to buy a new laptop using Manjaro funds, for about 2000€. The treasurer refused the expense, because it went against Manjaro's policy.

This led to an argument with the project lead, and surfaced other expenses that hadn't been discussed according to Manjaro's Policy, and led the treasurer to leave the company, leaving the project lead in full control of all the community funds.

Then Manjaro announced that they would be shipping SoftMaker office by default instead of LibreOffice. Replacing an open source component with a proprietary one isn't really something you'd expect from a Linux distribution.

Manjaro has also often been accused of not contributing to upstream, especially on the mobile front. Someone involved in the Pine64 community points out that the fact that most mobile Pine64 projects are starting to falter is due to the fact that only Manjaro is a supported distribution for the Pinephone, where before there were a myriad of community editions, and that Manjaro doesn't really contribute to supporting the hardware.

In March 2025, militants launched coordinated attacks on Alawite communities such as Tartous and Latakia. The bombings left dozens dead and sent a chill through Christian towns along the coast. To be clear, what we are witnessing is the systematic targeting of nearly all religious minorities in Syria – Christians, Druze, Ismailis, Yazidis, Alawites and Shiites – by violent Islamist factions. To call it ‘sectarian violence’ is to imply mutuality where there is none. Minority victims are not aggressors. They are certainly not the ones who need to show ‘restraint’.

There are hundreds of gospels, and they keep finding them. And the gospels are basically fan fiction about this #Jesus character. They didn't have TVs, but fandoms are literally older than time. They turn into religions. But according to many of the gospels, Jesus wasn't a nice guy and he'd throw fits if he didn't get his way.

I'm not a champion for "diversity", but I think there are more causes for our problems than the negative consequences of diversity. I also agree that we are not all the same.

Some responsibility is ours.

Some is on other forces that seek to subjugate people, not just white people.

The premise is that just having a nearly homogenious white society will not fix all the problems. Bad ideas that white people have, or are tricked into having, have bad consequences.

It is one of the reasons that I believe economic action does make things better.

These scammers coming through on #tumblr of late are ez to eliminate especially when they pretend to be females to gullible men and the extent of fraud to try pic collect or phish is gaining new levels I am just seeing now, the multiple apps they use and convincing images of them holding a piece of paper with the time/date handwritten on paper to get access to more of your info, you mention something of say sexual nature and sometimes the man pretending behind his keyboard will go deathly silent

Today was an awesome day at work. I managed to get a bit of time to completely year down this Lenovo X220 tablet, apply new thermal paste to the CPU, upgrade the RAM to 16GB DDR3, and replace the Seagate 500GB spinning rust drive with a 250GB WD Blue SSD. It's rocking Linux Mint 22.1 XFCE. Just finishing up by adding Krita, and some other software that might be useful on this neat machine. Have to pick up an eprom programmer some time so we can start flashing coreboot to some devices.

We upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB. One of the memory slots was not working, but got it working again after cleaning with a brush and rubbing alcohol. Some of the memory contacts in the slot must have had something stuck between them. Works great after cleaning.

We took out the bluetooth module, as my son does not plan on using that, so one less wireless device to worry about for power and security.

Redid thermal paste. Thorough cleaning.

Seems to be working much better now. It was not booting up at all right before this cleaning and working on and off for the past couple weeks. Hopefully this cleaning and service resolves that.

Audio Localization Gear Built On The Cheap

Most humans with two ears have a pretty good sense of directional hearing. However, you can build equipment to localize audio sources, too. That’s precisely what [Sam], [Ezra], and [Ari] did for their final project for the ECE4760 class at Cornell this past Spring. It’s an audio localizer!

The project is a real-time audio localizer built on a Raspberry Pi Pico. The Pico is hooked up to three MEMS microphones which are continuously sampled at a rate of 50 kHz thanks to the Pico’s nifty DMA features. Data from each microphone is streamed into a rolling buffer, with peaks triggering the software on the Pico to run correlations between channels to determine the time differences between the signal hitting each microphone. Based on this, it’s possible to estimate the location of the sound source relative to the three microphones.

The team goes into great deal on the project’s development, and does a grand job of explaining the mathematics and digital signal processing involved in this feat. Particularly nice is the heatmap output from the device which gives a clear visual indication of how the sound is being localized with the three microphones.

We’ve seen similar work before, too, like this project built to track down fireworks launches. Video after the break.

@jae@darkdork.dev It's astounding that a lot of people don't get this simple principle — especially the Asahi Linux fan crowd: if you don't like the direction Apple software is going, you do not support half-assed efforts to run alternative software on it. Because it encourages others to buy their hardware — the house always wins!
It might sound very specific, but it's not limited to this group of people: "We're forced into paying for Windows!", "We are forced into only being able to use certain features in Windows!", "We are forced into SecureBoot!", etc, etc.
Okay, but it's not like we only have a handful of hardware vendors anymore, how about supporting open hardware instead? Not as good, not as cheap? True, it probably never will be! But maybe one day it'd get close enough.
Well, I suppose long-term thinking was never a forte of any crowd 🤷
