Security deposits are 0% interest loans that lower-income folks must give to property owners if they don't want to die of exposure.

Considering that there are over 40 million rental units in the US, this means that many billions no-interest regressive loans like these are currently outstanding.

there are a number of USA states that mandate interest payments on security deposit.

When I lived in NYC, they actually had to make an annual interest payment if you had a multi year lease.

That said, I do agree with you the entire system is horrid.

@alcinnz IMO, “middle man” shouldn't be a job any more than being a landlord. My friend who's never had > $1k in cash just finally graduated University at 43 by incurring $15k of debt. Her rent's increasing beyond her means ($40/month more).

It doesn't matter what age you lose your virginity.

I've never understood our societies obsession with when men lose their virginity. You see it in media all the time like in 'The 42 year Old Virgin' and 'Last American Virgin'. It seems to be a bigger thing with men then women. Can any men here confirm?

Why does it matter when someone loses their virginity? If you ask me it's no one's business to when someone loses their v-card. People should lose it when they feel comfortable to. I hate our societies insistence that men lose it before the age of 18. Like if your an adult virgin our society sees it as a personal failing that makes you a loser. I never understood it myself. It's frankly ridiculous.

The thing is that for most men, it's not voluntary when they don't 'lose their v-card' for a long time, it's that they can't find a partner. Someone who never managed to find a partner despite trying typically doesn't exactly feel like a winner, so they tend to at least somewhat agree with the popular sentiment that older virgins are 'losers'.

It's true that this isn't really other people's business, especially not if they're only using it to put people down instead of trying to improve things. Though this is certainly an issue on a societal level.

My grandparents used to ballroom dance with the grandkids at family events. My grampa's favorite was the foxtrot.

Later I spent a few years taking lessons at the local ballroom dance school, and going to their frequent events.

My ex was never into it, and I eventually moved on.

Though he did like it when I came home hot and bothered from tango lessons.

I'm reluctant to mention that I will be going to Hungary for a cousin's wedding soon, but I mention it for solace. My Hungarian is very rusty. I understand everything. But speaking makes me sit bolt upright in bed in a sweat.
No one wants to look old/stupid. I'll look both. It wakes me up in the night in a sweat,

BUT, Magyar weddings are epic. The last one I attended (the sister of this bride) began at 2 PM & we left at 4 AM.

Scientists just discovered a way to smash cancer cells apart using light — no drugs, no chemo.

And they had a 99% kill rate in lab tests.

In a striking leap forward for cancer treatment, scientists have developed a new technique that uses light to physically destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

Researchers at Rice University, working with Texas A&M and the University of Texas, discovered that when dye molecules called aminocyanines—commonly used in imaging—are attached to cancer cells and hit with near-infrared light, they vibrate intensely. This synchronized movement, dubbed “molecular jackhammering,” generates mechanical force that ruptures the cancer cells' membranes.

The approach has shown dramatic results in early experiments, obliterating 99% of melanoma cells in petri dishes and triggering full remission in about half of tested mice. Because it relies on physical force rather than chemicals or genetic modification, it sidesteps the issue of resistance that plagues many existing therapies. Moreover, the use of near-infrared light means the treatment can penetrate deeply into tissue with minimal damage to surrounding cells—raising hopes for non-invasive therapy options. Researchers are now optimizing the method and preparing for human trials, eyeing a future where light becomes a powerful weapon against cancer.
