Hesitating getting a Switch 2 (1st game console in 15 years)...

I haven't had a proper game console since the PS3.

I would like to get one, mostly to play with my family (wife, 7yo kid). I had been waiting for the Switch 2 for a while now (I really resisted the urge to get a Switch OLED back when it was released...).

On the plus side:

  • it's really geared towards family/party gaming
  • it's Nintendo, so you get the whole usual games (Mario Kart, Zelda, etc.)
  • like most consoles, it's plug and play and can be enjoyed in the living room (I kind of gave up trying to set up a proper gaming experience with my Linux PCs, given that I don't have the hardware for it)

On the minus side:

  • the battery life is not great to say the least (2.5 hours takes me back of the Game Gear in early 90s!)
  • the screen seems to be pretty bad too (at least it's a step back from the OLED one of the Switch)
  • the joycons are still not using a Hall effect sensor, meaning they might still be prone to drifting
  • most of the games will not be sold as proper cartridges but as download codes
  • the whole thing (console, additional gamepads, games) is quite pricey
  • it's Nintendo, famous for their anti-everything (anti-homebrew, anti-emulation, anti-piracy)

Should I still go with it, or is there a better option? (I hope the better option is not to wait 4 more years for Nintendo to release a newer Switch 2 that would fix the shitty hardware).

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

in reply to laopi

I personally don't recommend anyone get the Switch 2. The new price points are frankly ridiculous, and I'd hate to see that shit get justified by sales.

Personally, I'd recommend looking into handheld PCs. I haven't looked into them much myself due to lack of money, but they're generally much more worth the cost from what I've heard.

All that said, I missed that you were looking for something to play with your 7 year old child. Switch might be better, but any handheld would be... notably destructible, so that's a factor to keep in mind.

Yeah, Mastodon's Unlisted is such a misnomer. My biggest gripe with it is that it mainly means "unsearchable".

And you can't really change that on a server, since that would mean that people who did mean "unsearchable" when they chose "unlisted", suddenly find their posts showing up in searches without their consent...

Friendica meanwhile shows threads as threads, but without the collapsing which would be very useful.

That's an urban legend, alas. While that *would* be a great way to make "unlisted" work, that's absolutely, positively, 100% *not* how "unlisted" works.

More here, including how to manage threads in your timeline:

#Kneecap news: according to the band themselves, they've been told that their set will not be streamed live but will be available on demand (presumably with some politically inappropriate words cut out) this evening.

I don't know what time this evening, and finding recorded sets on the iplayer during the festival is a challenge at the best of times.

But everyone, do please watch it when you can. I know that most of the people posting about Kneecap here will have no interest in enjoying the actual music, it's just a political point to make.

However, the only reason their political stances have made any headlines at all is because they're popular. And the only reason they're popular is that they are very good at what they do. It would be a great shame if everyone just focused on using them as a political football without paying attention to the tremendously entertaining music that Kneecap make.

Anyway, in about a quarter of an hour, BBC will be streaming Bob Vylan from the West Holts stage without controversy, and they're very good too, so watch that.

The UK’s designation of Hamas, and possibly Palestine Action, as “terrorist” organizations shows that the proscription regime is not about preventing terrorism but silencing political views and free expression.

We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent

We are constantly fed a version of AI that looks, sounds and acts suspiciously like us. It speaks in polished sentences, mimics emotions, expresses curiosity, claims to feel compassion, even dabbles in what it calls creativity.

But what we call AI today is nothing more than a statistical machine: a digital parrot regurgitating patterns mined from oceans of human data (the situation hasn’t changed much since it was discussed here five years ago). When it writes an answer to a question, it literally just guesses which letter and word will come next in a sequence – based on the data it’s been trained on.

This means AI has no understanding. No consciousness. No knowledge in any real, human sense. Just pure probability-driven, engineered brilliance — nothing more, and nothing less.

So why is a real “thinking” AI likely impossible? Because it’s bodiless. It has no senses, no flesh, no nerves, no pain, no pleasure. It doesn’t hunger, desire or fear. And because there is no cognition — not a shred — there’s a fundamental gap between the data it consumes (data born out of human feelings and experience) and what it can do with them.

Philosopher David Chalmers calls the mysterious mechanism underlying the relationship between our physical body and consciousness the “hard problem of consciousness”. Eminent scientists have recently hypothesised that consciousness actually emerges from the integration of internal, mental states with sensory representations (such as changes in heart rate, sweating and much more).

Given the paramount importance of the human senses and emotion for consciousness to “happen”, there is a profound and probably irreconcilable disconnect between general AI, the machine, and consciousness, a human phenomenon.

NATO's decision to increase military spending to 5% of nations' GDP by 2035 is an obscene betrayal of global needs. This goal is a result of US pressure and will impoverish societies while enriching weapons contractors.

Protests are spreading against NATO along with calls for redirecting resources to climate justice, healthcare, and peace.

This week, Democracy for Sale revealed how a secretive police unit is instructing forces across England to withhold information about their contracts with Palantir, the shadowy US firm founded by Trump donor Peter Thiel.

UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini:

⭕️ The new aid distribution system has become a killing field. Over 400 starving people reported killed since it started operating just a month ago.

⭕️ Instead of "orderly food distribution”, this system brings dehumanization, chaos and death. This cannot become the new norm. This abomination must end through a return to humanitarian deliveries from the #UN including #UNRWA.

⭕️ A #ceasefire is needed and the siege must be lifted to bring back a standard flow of basics including food, medicine, soap and fuel.

Palantir specializes in data analysis and surveillance software used by governments and law enforcement agencies to predict potential threats and guide decision-making.

Palantir has significant influence through contracts in various countries, including the US, UK, Germany, and France.

The company's operations are shrouded in mystery, and its success is tied to the failure of institutions and the erosion of public trust.

Philippines: Three Informants Executed by the Guerrilla

On June 23, two people – identified under the pseudonyms “Palay”, 56, and “Putot”, 41, owner of a restaurant – were executed in the municipality of San Isidro. On Thursday, June 26, a third person, identified under his pseudonym “Isagani”, was killed with automatic pistol in the municipality of Bandila (photo). These two municipalities are located in the Toboso region, in the Western Negros. The Maoist guerrillas claimed these executions by explaining that the three men were informants of the army. The struggle has been intesified lately and informants are very present.

@RichardKuklinskisIcyGlare The cost of living could rise by 40 to 70% over say 1 to 2 years. The increase in cost of living would not be uniform; essentials and imported goods would see the steepest rises. The poorest households would face the highest relative impact, as they spend a larger share of income on food, fuel, and other necessities.

During the 1970s, a period of high inflation and significant US dollar devaluation, the dollar lost about 75% of its purchasing power, and gold prices increased approximately 30-fold. Essential costs like gasoline, mortgages, and groceries surged by 60 to 100% over several years

Thanks to LLMs I am querying books I really shouldn’t.

There is a book called en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitlers_… in German language which describes an debunked way Nazis made a fission bomb (mainstream history says Nazis couldn’t make the nuclear bomb), without having enough enriched material to work with. Nazis used a unconventional design of using a fusion reaction to create enough neutrons to do fission in a less enriched material. It is thoroughly debunked. Using fission to start fusion is well known. But using fusion to start fission first stage is not considered possible AFAIK CMIIW

So it got me reading about shaped charges, explosive lenses etc. and there is a thing called en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voitenko… invented by a Ukrainian engineer in the 1960s. It is the only chemical way to generate a nuclear fusion reaction. It sounds remarkably like what the above book says Nazis used, but the author of the book doesn’t know about Voitenko.

TL;DR It might be possible to make a nuclear weapon without using weapons grade fissile material. Just slightly enriched fissile material is enough.

Here I go again...My brother is sick and in the hospital right now. He Does NOT wanna be there, but he got to a certain point, and then it was kinda out of his control. He didn't take good care of himself, and now it has caught-up to him.

Luckily, I'm in town, so I was able to see him before he went to the hospital. I figured it was probably heat exhaustion. I was a good sister, I got him a cold towel, some popsicles, and various drinks to rehydrate. He lasted a few more days, but then he had to give in and go to the hospital. It was only getting worse, not better. He couldn't breathe to walk. Family was insistent.

Sure enough, he has Pneumonia...He had an abscess inside his lung that had to be, (puking sounds) drained...he has some tube in his back...but he's feeling much better with being rehydrated, and pumped...they took over a liter of liquid off his lungs...He's doing better, thankfully...

Buuuut, here's the rub...The hospital...wants you to not only show ID, which I cannot stand doing...bust also...get this...take your picture, BEFORE entering the hospital for a visit.

GTFO. Nope. That's not happening. I sent my Dad in, to try to get past without jumping through the hoops. He was more than happy to try. Got stopped. They did comply.

Luckily, my brother, doesn't want to be in the hospital ("Health" (SICK) Care System) any more than I do. We don't agree on a lot of things, but this we do...So he understands, I'll be visiting him when he gets OUT of Spy Central. I don't have anything to hide...Except, My Right to Privacy. We didn't have to do this before...

I don't like this at all. I want to see my brother, but I'm not conforming to this Ridiculous Overreach...

I didn't wear a face mask through Covid...ever. I did not participate...and, I'm not going to now...

Ya know those drivers licenses they want everyone to have...NOPE. I'm NOT doing that...I renewed my, "NOT" Federal ID, for 8 Years.

Because, I've Learned that sometimes, it's going to mean that I miss out on some BIG Deals. I did before, and I Will Again...

Because, had I just complied, and been face masked-up, like Aaaaalmost everyone else throughout The Great Covid Scamdemic, without having a backbone to stand up for my Freedom to Decide for myself, and My Privacy, and My Rights...and been the ONLY Barefaced person in Public for Soooooo Long...We'd probably still be wearing facemasks or worse, at this point.

It did not matter to me...I was always going to be the example, and remind the World, that Iiiiiiii was the "Normal" one. I missed out on a lot of important stuff...because Freedom doesn't come Free. There is a sacrifice, blood, or otherwise.

But'cha know what I've learned through all of it...

That the Price of FREEDOM is Inconvenience.

Most people don't want to be inconvenienced...So they'll give up their Freedom for Security...That's just, NOT Me.

Never Trade Freedom for Safety. Freedom will Always Afford you Safety, But Safety, will NEVER Afford You Freedom.

You know, Our Rights can NEVER Be Taken Away...NEVER...They can ONLY Be Surrendered.

NEVER SURRENDER!

Sisters and brothers:

This rainy season brings us good and bad things, we see God’s blessings in them, as they remind us of the hope we shared with our brothers and sisters, before they were martyred. Our crops, the harvest, which our mother earth gives us, as well as the colorful flowers that for years have given us ideas to create the costumes of our region. The bad thing is the landslides that disrupt the hills and put us at risk of being buried, as well as the violence that is lived in the world. But our hope is in the word of God “As the rain descends from heaven, and does not return there, without having soaked and fertilized the earth and made it germinate, giving seed to sow and bread to eat, so shall the word be that goes forth from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will do what I will, and fulfill its mission. Is. 55, 10-11

We believe in this word, as an organization it encourages us because we need water to live, and so too, like the rain, the Peace we need to live, will soak the earth, that is our hope!

We have lived histories of violence, (like the mudslides) in our municipality, since 1996, with the paramilitaries, violence that stopped the Acteal massacre, but never totally ended, the most recent history is what is happening in some communities, for example, Tzajalch’en that denounced the presence of armed groups linked to organized crime identified with the governments. A few days ago, there were shots fired, there were no injuries, but a climate of fear was created, provoked by armed men who entered intimidating the community. The GN and the army arrived, but instead of providing security, of investigating the armed groups, more gunshots were heard. Then the Immediate Reaction Forces, the Pakales, arrived in the community, they pretended to go after the aggressors, they entered the Ignacio Zaragoza school, they detained a member of Las Abejas de Acteal and the community agent, they falsely accused them of kidnapping, but after intimidating them they had to release them. We hear in the news the words of the governor saying that “no one is above the law,” but the Pakales do seem to be above the law, because they are unjust, arbitrary, they do not respect us as people, they violate our rights, or which law?

Because the violence in the area is escalating, the communities are warning about the risk of a massacre of the Tsotsil people by organized crime. Will the history of 1997 repeat itself, when, after we denounced the presence of the paramilitaries, and Jtotik Samuel also alerted the government that if they did not take care of it something could happen, but they did not believe us, will history repeat itself?

On the other hand, in the north, many of our brothers and sisters are suffering the separation of their children, they are being criminalized, some are in prison, others have been deported by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and all are suffering repression by the Armed Forces that the same president mobilized in different cities, reinforcing his authoritarianism.

But we recognize and thank the fraternal people of the United States, who reject the repressive policies of their government, protesting in the streets, in favor of our sisters and brothers from Mexico and the world who work in their country.

It also hurts us in Palestine, that a dehumanized Israel continues the genocide, killing innocent children, people attacked by snipers while looking for food and hundreds of wounded who die for lack of medicine, using hunger and medicine as weapons of war, and not satisfied with finishing off Palestine, attacks Iran, putting humanity at risk, with a third world war, which would end the life of the planet.

We stand in solidarity with the comrades from Mexico and other countries who, in defiance of the Israeli regime, are on their way to Gaza carrying food.

Sisters and brothers, we invite you not to accept that violence becomes our norm of life. Let us not identify ourselves with this way of living. We have dignity, principles and human values that commit us to harmonize life with non-violent actions.

The Tsotsil communities, Las Abejas de Acteal and the community of Tzajalch’en that build Peace without violence:

We DEMAND OF THE THREE LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT:

  • Guarantees of security.
  • That they immediately cease the intimidation and criminalization of the communities that defend justice and peace.
  • Real investigations that lead them to dismantle the armed groups linked to organized crime that operate with impunity in the Tsotsil region.

Common leftist narrative: "A corporation is not a person."

My response: "Is a race a person? Is a gender a person? Is a sexual orientation a person?"

Typical leftist response: "Well, they're groups of persons."

My response to that: "You mean, just like a corporation is?"

Society is not a person.

A government (a state) is not a person, either.

Neither is a race. Neither is a sex/gender. Neither is a sexual orientation.

Either all of those have rights, or none of them do. Choose one.
