#NorthDakota tribe goes back to its roots with a massive greenhouse operation

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — "A #NativeAmerican tribe in North Dakota will soon grow lettuce in a giant greenhouse complex that when fully completed will be among the country’s largest, enabling the tribe to grow much of its own food decades after a federal #dam flooded the land where they had cultivated corn, beans and other crops for millennia.

"Work is ongoing on the #Mandan, #Hidatsa and #Arikara Nation’s 3.3-acre greenhouse that will make up most of the #NativeGreenGrow operation’s initial phase. However, enough of the structure will be completed this summer to start growing leafy greens and other crops such as tomatoes and strawberries.

" 'We’re the first farmers of this land,' Tribal Chairman #MarkFox said. 'We once were part of an aboriginal trade center for thousands and thousands of years because we grew crops — corn, beans, squash, watermelons — all these things at massive levels, so all the tribes depended on us greatly as part of the aboriginal trade system.'

"The tribe will spend roughly $76 million on the initial phase, which also will include a warehouse and other facilities near the tiny town of Parshall. It plans to add to the growing space in the coming years, eventually totaling about 14.5 acres, which officials say would make it one of the world’s largest facilities of its type.

"The initial greenhouse will have enough glass to cover the equivalent of seven football fields.

"The tribe’s fertile land along the #MissouriRiver was inundated in the mid-1950s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the #GarrisonDam, which created #LakeSakakawea.

"Getting fresh produce has long been a challenge in the area of western North Dakota where the tribe is based, on the #FortBerthold Indian Reservation. The rolling, rugged landscape — split by Lake Sakakawea — is a long drive from the state’s biggest cities, Bismarck and Fargo.

"That isolation makes the greenhouses all the more important, as they will enable the tribe to provide food to the roughly 8,300 people on the Fort Berthold reservation and to reservations elsewhere. The tribe also hopes to stock #FoodBanks that serve isolated and impoverished areas in the region, and plans to export its produce.

"Initially, the #MHANation expects to grow nearly 2 million pounds of food a year and for that to eventually increase to 12 to 15 million pounds annually. Fox said the operation’s first phase will create 30 to 35 jobs.

"The effort coincides with a national move to increase #FoodSovereignty among tribes."

#Milei schafft in #Argentinien Wohlstand !

A great place to insert that lead in (grizzled truck driver, muttering incomprehensible epithets under his breath as he closes in the last 200 yds) would be during the cutaway of the stacked side view, accompanying a shitty, 1960s zoom in and the air horn as the crescendo leading to the horizon drove off final scene.

@scottdhansen I'm not sure they have prominent scent glands. I'm very familiar with muskrat and beaver glands. I did a cursory look and removed the fat for this purpose but it is what it is.

On pelt, it's summertime, worth nothing. Very springy. Not sellable anyway (it's not a furbearer) but I would keep it during winter although I never get these in winter.

Woodchuck, groundhog, I think same thing.

The destruction of #Jabaliya is massive. It's something extreme. And if you remember the death IOF spread among innocent civilians it gets even worse. But from this rubble #idfterrorists left defeated. They say Jabalia was the command centre of the #Resistance and they never even reached the "elimination" (they were imagine...) of the resistance. Till their withdrawal they had every day injured and dead #zionazis soldiers.

Yes, LTE only does IPv6.

Mobile networks can offer IPv4 via the standard mechanisms while tunneling everything, but since that wasn't cursed enough, there are some networks that no longer do that and only offer a special kind of IPv4 tunnel protocol to ensure only demon rectangles can get IPv4 working with the network (bonus points for making MMS only worth with IPv4 of course).

I won the lottery! A few weeks ago I bought my first scratch off ticket in years and won zero. Then this week I bought another scratch off ticket and won $4. That means I'm up $2. I'm considering reinvesting my winnings in 4 $1 tickets. Or I could bask in entertainment value I've already received and spend my winnings on something foolish, like a taco from an unfamiliar taco truck.

It's a poor and stupid tax.

It's also an occasional source of amusement. I feel like I've received at least $2 worth of fun from the purchases. Sometimes I'll give them to folks as part of a present, strictly for entertainment.

Buying more than a few per year is dumb. That's not entertainment, that's gambling.

Given that the average healthy body temperature is ~98.6⁰ F, and humidity on the Gulf Coast tends to be so high you gotta drink the air, I prefer temperatures 85⁰ or lower.

With high temperatures and high humidity, sweat can't even evaporate, forcing your internal body temperature into unhealthy feverish levels. I'm not a fan of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

I'm also not a fan of freezing temperatures either, but at least people can dress in layers to keep warm when it's cold.

My knee-jerk reaction to this article from @adamshostack was a cynical [citation needed] re “artists from all mediums emphatically support the use of AI.”

On further reflection…well, that’s still my response to the eyeball-grabbing lede, yes, but the actual article is what I wish we’d had instead of this inane hype avalanche:

Artists poking at the new thing, playing with it, finding its possibilities, critiquing it, problematizing it, asking us to ask what it is, helping us see it with fresh eyes from many angles. infosec.exchange/@adamshostack…

I’m fond of quipping that arts education is •the• foundational form of education, and that education in any field should never stray too far from being arts education.

It’s little wonder that the forces that push investment bubbles and wealth concentration are so hostile to both the arts and education. And we need to recognize that hostility, which is so often cloaked as support:

3/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

But here’s the thing: anyone could make music •before• gen AI. Some more skilled or more artistically successful than others, sure! But that’s not the point. •Doing it• is the point. •Living it• is the point.

A product that promises to generate it for you so that you neither do it nor live it is antithetical to the point, is hostile to the idea of art itself.

(Note: that’s exactly what the artists in the OP are •not• doing! They are all grabbing the AI and actively •doing• and •living• while poking at the curious new object.)

5/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

Similarly, hostility to education cloaks itself as support by saying that education should be useful, should be practical, should be focused only on what students need, should be narrowed to what students need, should narrow students, should narrow students into being only what capitalism needs.

I wrote extensively about this dangerous line of thought here:

Maria Montessori:

❝Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.❞

❝We cannot know the consequences of suppressing a child's spontaneity when he is just beginning to be active. We may even suffocate life itself. That humanity which is revealed in all its intellectual splendor during the sweet and tender age of childhood should be respected with a kind of religious veneration. It is like the sun which appears at dawn or a flower just beginning to bloom. Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up himself to life.❞

in reply to Paul Cantrell

i don't think i disagree with any of your "actual" points, but i kinda don't like the specific phrasing of "anyone could make music <or other art form>"

i've recently been doing some more-serious self-experiments and found that I *definitely* (neurologically?) cannot hear what other people seem to hear in music (amusia is a thing, apparently). everyone around me nowadays also suspects i have awful undiagnosed dyspraxia which made me *hate* "doing art" as a child

More Americans are biting their tongues, not because they don’t care, but because they’re afraid to speak.

From DEI to the war in Gaza, people are more afraid to speak their minds now than during the Red Scare, according to a political scientist who has been conducting surveys.

This “spiral of silence” is real. It’s stifling democratic debate and amplifying the loudest, most aggressive voices.
