As the social networking landscape evolves, marked by moments of mass migration between platforms—often triggered by political or cultural shifts—open-source ecosystems have a unique opportunity to make a difference. While the values of "libre" and open source resonate strongly within the developer and advocacy communities, broader user adoption is often driven by features and usability rather than philosophical alignment. This is why fairness and sustainability are critical elements in building a future-proof social web.
In this talk, we will focus on the practical implementation of fair monetization within the fediverse. We will demonstrate how Web Monetization allows creators to receive tips from their audience, either proportionally to the time spent consuming content or through one-time contributions.
More importantly, we will show how this is implemented in code, leveraging Castopod (an open-source, fediverse-connected podcast hosting platform) in three different ways: HTML, RSS, and Activity Streams.
Additionally, we’ll present a live demo showcasing cross-platform tipping on another fediverse platform. This demonstration will provide a detailed look at the technical foundation, illustrating how developers can implement and extend these capabilities in their own projects.
Now is the time for open-source developers to seize the moment as users seek alternatives to centralized platforms. We invite projects to integrate and extend these functionalities. Together, we can create a vibrant, sustainable, and open fediverse for everyone.

Después fuimos a su factoría a que nos enseñaran cómo elaboraban sus quesos y yo aproveché para comprar cositas. Y es que, aparte de los quesos, hacen de intermediarios para otros productores de la región (venden cervezas La Bailandera, vinos de El Molar, mieles de la Alcarria, aceites de Alcalá y de la zona de Las Vegas, garbanzos de Daganzo…), pero también venden carne. Tanto carne de ternera, como lechal y cabrito. Aunque esto de las carnes es más puntual, sí que tienen un sistema de aviso para clientes interesados. ¡Os recomiendo que paséis a echarles una visita!

Two fireboxes, left side and right side. No grate, flat surface at the bottom of each firebox. Small transfer-slot between the two fireboxes at the bottom. Below each firebox is an ash box, a small exhaust transfer slot is at the outside edge between the firebox and the ash box below it. Intake air enters at the top of one of the two fireboxes, exhaust exits via one of the two ash boxes. A set of valves selects which firebox gets intake air and which ash box gets exhaust vacuum.
Intake left, exhaust right makes the left firebox downdraft and the right firebox cross-draft. Green arrow shows this. Obviously inverting the intake and exhaust side swaps the roles.
Freshly added wood goes on the downdraft side, where pre-heated intake air bakes the moisture out of the wood. Steam from the fresh wood transfers to the cross-draft side where hot coals pull oxygen from the air and steam, creating flammable carbon monoxide and hydrogen gasses.
When the cross-draft side burns down to a small bed of coals, the direction of flow is reversed, the cross-draft side becomes the down-draft side, and it can be re-filled with fresh wood.
I never really thought of it as making money but I suppose it's possible... It's basically an outdoor wood boiler, which also has an internal combustion engine which generates electricity.

For profit companies who have built walled gardens and wish to stay that way (reddit, tumblr, meta, linkedin, etc.) are at ethical odds with the ActivityPub world, insofar as people are trying vehemently to get away from these companies. But you'll notice for profit companies who are within the ideals of Fedipeople (for example Nitro, or Tuta, or Proton, or Mullvad) do not get griefed due to alignment of values and morals of the communities in question.
But the pitch wasn't "everything will be interoperable unless the company doesn't mean it or wants to make money or we aren't "morally aligned", whatever that means".
I don't understand how you can be a "walled garden" and still feature interoperability with a set of open source platforms under a pre-established set protocol. This is not an ethical problem or a problem of ideology, those two things are mutually exclusive.
This also sounds a whole lot like it disproves skrlet13's point on the heterogeneous Fedi where everything fits under different but overlapping bubbles. Seems to me you think Fedi has the one moral and ethical position on this.
