Fact-checking snippets were designed to protect users from misinformation and expose them to reliable sources first. Discontinuing this feature in favor of #AI-generated summaries risks amplifying inaccuracies or hallucinations.
The founder and CEO of Maldita.es and chair of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network, expressed concern over #Google’s decision to end its 10-year collaboration with fact-checkers without prior notice or consultation. Google claims its data indicates the fact-checking snippet is “not commonly used in Search” and no longer offers “significant additional value for users,” yet it has not shared this data. In contrast, the Reuters Institute Digital News Report, which surveyed 92,000 online news consumers across 46 markets, found that 25% globally seek fact-checks in search results, with 38% in the U.S. and 44% in Norway expecting such information. In Europe, the average is 23%, while in the Balkans, 31% of Serbians look for fact-checks. Additionally, 38% of Brazilians, 32% of Kenyans and South Africans, and 37% of Filipinos in the Global South also expect fact-checks when verifying information.
Google is clearly not going to stop aggressively promoting their AI to their customers. This decision simply happens to be compatible with the current political climate in the United States and is extremely convenient when both the United States and Israel are engaged in activities that they deny are genocide. At least when it comes to results related to what’s happening in Gaza, the regurgitated bullshit from regime-friendly pro-Israel media outlets like the #NYT and #WAPO are incredibly helpful. I doubt Google’s large language models are trained on data from Al Jazeera, The Intercept, or Electronic Intifada.
Regardless, the best solution is undoubtedly not to use Google for search. DuckDuckGo and many other alternatives come to mind, as do self-hosted meta search engines like SearNGX (which offers significantly more useful tools than either).

yes i know there's a lot of games like this but we need MORE we gotta push back against the small business mindset. you will not get rich selling your crops to the local store! but you COULD make a difference if we had COMMUNIST INFRASTRUCTURE
basically that is even harder when you think about it. In those "manage your shop maximise profits" at some point you make enough so you can easily save some money up an go forward, but with public infrastructure you have a budget you have to take care of. no way of just making more. you could also add like a "politics" tab where you have to make some good decisions to get more funding for stuff (like a better bench on the bus stop)
Oh my god, you gave me an idea of a game. In early fifties, each french electrical substation were runned by two people. They did everything there : maintenance, gardening, electrical dispatching... sometimes, they were other people who went to the substation for some expert work.
I think we can make a game about it. It will deal with relationship between workers, how to deal with the others, maintaining a place and of course, some electrical things....
on a similar note, i like stuff like the factory logistics management in Satisfactory, but the game encourages you to clear-cut forests and build giant industrial complexes. we need more logistics games with a focus on efficiency for a minimal footprint and ecological restoration
YES i agree completely. this is part of why i only play modded minecraft in multiplayer. with complex enough mods you can in fact run a cute cozy chemical synthesis / power generation / water treatment plant
What about a cozy farming game about solving a food crisis, instead of selling crops to make money and basically own the town. As you grow you move past the local town and have the challenges of growing different crops for the next sphere. Which encourages you to not monocrop. Upgrades are awarded on how well you are feeding the people and considering their local needs. Maybe an overarching goal is to push out the "cozy shops" (which aren't that cozy and of course are capitalistic minded) in favor of the communism.
Sub goals might include helping the post office (since they are shipping your crops) and the water treatment (since they water your crops).
I'd love to run a cute cozy train station! Where there's real passenger service and cute little shops (it would be nice to have other people run those inside my game) and all!
I would love to work in a library with a community outreach calendar and local folks with dialogue where books and research help them solve their problems.

The Department of Justice on Monday unveiled a record-shattering crackdown on the #corrupt underbelly of #America’s #health care #system. A jaw-dropping 324 defendants — including 96 medical professionals — have been charged in 50 federal districts and 12 states for orchestrating over $14.6 billion in intended fraud, largely targeting Medicare, Medicaid, and federal health programs meant to serve the #elderly, #disabled, and the #poor.
The takedown, spearheaded by the DOJ’s Health Care Fraud Unit in coordination with HHS-OIG, the FBI, the DEA, and over a dozen state attorney general offices, marks the largest health care fraud bust in U.S. history.
“Today, as we announced the largest coordinated health care fraud takedown in the history of the Department of Justice, it marks a decisive moment in our fight to protect American taxpayers from fraudsters and to defend the integrity of America’s health care system,” said Matthew R. Galeotti, DOJ’s Head of the Criminal Division.
“We are announcing today charges against 324 defendants for their alleged participation in health care fraud schemes involving approximately $14.6 billion in false claims submitted to Medicare, Medicaid, and other health care programs.”

Open Linux Kernel Modules Installed by Default Starting in the release 560 series, it will be recommended to use the open flavor of NVIDIA Linux Kernel Modules wherever possible (Turing or later GPUs, or Ada or later when using GPU virtualization).
The article is interesting in that it talks about pushing towards open versions of kernel modules, instead of legacy ones, and of much broader scope that the literal 2 lines you chose as title.
Because the open module is only for Turing or later GPUs, or Ada, and the open module is available for those since 2022 so it's not that big of a news.
That doesn't mean it's good they're deprecating cards to do it. They were still selling GT1030s new until relatively recently, and the GTX1080 is a perfectly workable card.
If you think open versions are cool, how about them just open-sourcing the Maxwell & Pascal drivers? Oh, that's right, they won't because the "special sauce" is in the driver, not the card BIOS like it is for the Turing & up families.
my 750 ti works. nouveau can't increase the clock speed to the operating clock on boot, on boot the display on that card shows random data with colorful pixels, and nvtop does not see it either, but it works.
NVK doesn't support older cards though last time I checked. Pretty funny how I ended up with a stack of paperweights because NVidia dropped support and Nouveau/NVK can't get their shit together and instead of focusing on existing hardware they rather keep chasing the "latest and greatest".
(Perhaps asking silly questions in order to understand, I've never totally understood the nvidia driver numbers and what they mean, i just kinda installed some and they seem to work and i just forgot about them, i can run the modest games i like)

The 980Ti as stated by the Dirk's comment use Maxwell architecture, I'm not able to find any end of support date on the site, so I'm not sure when they will drop support.

Unfortunately you don't need to wait to see this happens, because it's already happening right now, indeed dx12 games have a lot of problems running on this older cards on linux, and I myself experienced this with my 1060 first with cyberpunk 2077 and after that with resident evil 2 remastered.

I know it's a generation later but the 1660ti I bought secondhand just before the pandemic is also working like a beast. If I had a lot of disposable income maybe I would've upgraded but it's performing so good that I'd rather spend the 1500+ bucks on a different project like a NAS for jellyfin.

I was 12 years old in 1974, the year Watergate unfolded on America's television screens. I've been interested in politics ever since. Watergate and Vietnam are a frame that still affects my vision of politics today.
The utter immorality of the war in Vietnam and the clear violations of law and ethics in Nixon's election rigging seemed to be crimes worthy of strict, harsh punishment and yet... nothing changed. I watched and protested and voted and marched and 50 years passed and a convicted felon got elected.
I hate it. But I always wanted the CIA to get reduced. I always wanted US influence in the world to wane. Suddenly, the EU is moving away from its long dependance on American military. I always wanted Wall Street to mean less in the world. Now, the US markets are becoming untenable for the world's money. I 'm getting so many things I wanted and I hate it.
I hate it because it is going to come at the cost of people who are innocent being chewed up in the fascist machine. I hate it because children are suffering. I hate it because I have friends and family in fear, through no fault of their own, for no reason other than rank bigotry. I hate that people I thought were friends turned out to be perfectly fine with fascism.
If there is a silver lining, I guess it's that there is no going back to "normal" at this point. The media might convince Americans that it can, even that it is.

Kent State/Cambodia was the turning point for me and I have studied/worked for a different international role for the CIA and the US in general the more I learned. But I naively assumed that new role would be a result of increasing compassion and knowledge rather than the opposite of that.
