I decided to make a new Facebook account to try and get in touch with some foreign friends that I really don't want to lose contact with. This is new. I'm guessing this is Facebook's way of gearing up for the new Australian social media laws.
The Australian government wants to have facial ID mandated as age verification for all social media. The laws already passed months ago but they don't go into effect until December. At which point it becomes illegal for 16 year olds and under to use anything considered social media. Even YouTube. Whole point is to force people to accept the #digitalid I'm sure the age restriction for social media will end up getting lifted, months after going into effect, once a large enough number of people get logged out of all their social media and get a pop up telling them to sign up for digital id, and they will because it'll be soooooo convenient.
This was a busy month, with ~80 pull requests merged, as we're trying to get all the breaking changes we can added before the 1.0 release.
The release is still several months away, as even after finishing up the rest of the 1.0 milestone issues, we still have to add this new functionality to Lemmy-UI and Jerboa, and do extensive testing.
Here are some of the major changes made over the past month:
Added multi-communities (One of the most requested features).
Added a new rate limiting library.
Refactored the API structs and library for better usage in Rust projects.
Improved the migration diff checker.
Using an external library for checking invisible characters.
Votes are now removed when banning + removing data.
Added a GDPR style data export.
Storing upvote / downvote totals you gave to each user, and a setting to display that history next to their name.
Added ability to make a note for a user.
Added an RSS feed for modlogs.
Added an API action to get liked / disliked content.
An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and Nutomic work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached we can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

You react more emotionally in your mother tongue because you learned this language as a child together with many emotions that you experienced as a child. You usually learn a foreign language at school where it is not about emotions and very often more about pressure. As a result, you are often much colder and more rational when making decisions in a foreign language.
In most NATO countries, English is the second language and negotiations between NATO members are conducted in English. This allows the participants to make cold rational decisions and their emotions are left out. A bad combination when it comes to establishing a peaceful world order.
Research shows people who speak another language are more utilitarian and flexible, less risk-averse and egotistical, and better able to cope with traumatic memories
@anubis2814 The problem with the US is that they are a big bully that picks wars with sheep herders and has formed the opinion that they are good at it. Given they usually lose against said sheep herders that opinion may be false. The big mistake that was made recently was forcing Russia and China to unite and the US is not the greatest any longer in any way. Just like Israel thinking it is a big boy now because it beat a load of children and then attacked Iran and got it's arse handed to it the US is very close to an extremely costly mistake. The main difference is that they can see the propaganda as propaganda but the average US peep actually believes the lies. The difference is that they know it is all propaganda whereas the average peep over here actually believes Fox or CNN and sees the other as propaganda and all of Russian and Chinese news as propaganda whereas the Russians and Chinese know that it is all propaganda. You would not read Al Jazeera and would probably say racist things because it is Arab but although they are still propaganda they are probably the best globally and do the most to be objective. In 4 hours I will be chatting with a Russian client and he does not follow the conflict in Ukraine just as you did not follow the conflict that the US just had in Sudan. You just went to work and chatted with your friends but he does see us ranting on on youtube and in the media about how bad his life is while his economy is doing great, althought the price of Mac Books has gone up and he did not like that and he just bought a Volvo which cost him more than last time. Whereas every thing you write on the internet is spied on far worse than in Russia or China but you actually believe that they are cencored more than you.
The US common people are also victims of their own oligarch regime. Bombing them would be monstruous. We need them to wake the fuck up and overthrow their own oligarchs regime by their own will and means. So the only rational thing we can do is to invest our energies into opening their eyes.

For a couple days, our CO2 detectors in the basement have been going off, intermittently for short periods of time. I had just replaced them last fall and our furnace isn't in use so I checked the hot water heater and it was fine. I was a bit baffled since there is no other possible source. Then, this morning, I woke up a half hour earlier than usual, so I extended my work out. So I happened to be down there long enough for it to happen 2x. 1/2
As a result, I was able to notice that both times it was right after the dehumidifier came on. The litter box, is right next to the dehumidifier and the self clumping litter make a very fine clay dust. Over time that dust built up inside the dehumidifier and when it blew it out, it caused the false alarm. I cleaned the inside of it and moved it away from the litter box. Hasn't gone off since. This is good, the noise was putting me over the edge and it didn't cost me any $.
Glad you found the problem. We don't even have gas, but CO2 still registers on a meter that was bought. Once the windows are opened, it goes away. So...I don't know. You have to be a detective these days.

I understand how it is to receive no donations for a worthy cause. I started a website called Freedom Of Speech! in 2018 which was free for everyone to use and had a donation option to help make it better. In 7 years, FOS! only received $1 and that was to test the donation feature. I provided an alternative platform to stop illegal censorship, but sheeple would rather be censored than give up fakebook, twatter, onlyshekels, etc in order to help build a grassroots platform based on actual free speech. I'm not going to waste time and money on it anymore. Once the domain name registration and hosting services expire, FOS! will be gone. Am I disappointed and disgusted with sheeple? Absolutely. I won't waste any more time on those that refuse to wake up. They've sealed their own fates and deserve the hell that's coming for them.

Thought: It's much easier to impose compulsory insurance than it is to legislate liability. So to say that landlords are held liable for the crimes committed by tenants is a major change of liability framework, but to say landlords are required to carry insurance in case they have thug tenants, that could be even a zoning bylaw...
So you could take a place that's currently zoned single family, and propose a zoning law that apartment buildings are legal, IF AND ONLY IF they are insured against tenant criminality. That way that area is able to urbanize without becoming a ghetto.
Sounds good, but municipalities change zoning all the time, at least in the cities. As far as insurance specific to crime, that would be very difficult to get. If you do, it would be very expensive, and then they come up with excuses of why they don't cover it. Then drop you. Further, if you needed a loan for your project, the banks hold you accountable for not having insurance, and can call in the loan. 😡

Is the circulation of money dangerous for the social stability of societies?
The following experiment was carried out by scientists. A group of monkeys were given coins and taught to exchange them for grapes. The monkeys understood this and exchanged their coins for grapes. When the price was high they only bought a few grapes and when the price went down they bought more. After a while, however, the males kept back some coins and collected them. They then gave these coins to the females and let's just say the females were very friendly to the males in return. The females in turn bought grapes in return. So the monkeys understood the money and service cycle.
However, the Ethics Council, which supervised the experiment, also prohibited its continuation at the time. The reason given was that the money cycle destroys the social structure of the monkeys.
I have to say how lucky we are that we have banned the monkeys from using money.
A contest is an activity that includes - score-keeping - winners and losers - rules that can't be changed whenever participants happen to feel like changing them - some combination of the above
Money turns life into a contest. Money is the score-keeping.
Children should be discouraged from participating in contests. Instead of something like football, children should ride bicycles or ski. No contest involved. (Yes, you can turn these healthy, enjoyable activities into a contest, but you don't have to.) If pressured to compete in contests, children should be encouraged to forfeit.
