I babied my nasturtiums this year they went nuts in the spring. They come up naturally every year in that bed this year I goaded them on a lot. Has been nice they are struggling now during the summer but the more seeds that fall in that bed well- I know they'll be back next year easy!
I need the collective brain for some tips. A friend got diagnosed with cancer and will start chemo soon. And I read about gifts etc, but I'd like to know from survivors or those still fighting, what you'd appreciate.
I can knit and sew and will do some socks and hats as those were often mentioned from soft yarn.

Much depends on the particular chemo cocktail, but: 1. Best not to eat too much the evening after the first dose. If it is one that causes sickness, that will take some hours to kick in. 2. Ginger biscuits, crystallised ginger, all good for nibbling when queasy. 3. If the chemo causes a nasty, persistent, metallic taste, pineapple juice can help. Apparently it contains an enzyme that counteracts it. Get plenty.
all the best! I've learnt from all of my cancer surviving friends that food or snacks are really difficult - they all had literally no cravings or appetite whatsoever. Even worse: Some of their previously favourite food was spoilt for them by having it during therapy.
ymmv, but a dear friend of mine, when she started her therapy, realized she enjoyed, when she felt ok, extremely tasty food. As in, she developed a passion for wasabi and the like.
Just be there for them, let them vent, and actively listen. Not my own words, I borrowed them from an article I recently read, but they are true. That's what my wife did for me when I was in treatment. Luckily my treatment was not too bad, but what she did really helped me get through it all.
I have a friend who had breast cancer and someone knitted her a blanket to use while in chemo (because those rooms are cold) and she did. Unfortunately now that she is in remission, she cannot even look at the blanket without feeling nauseated due to having always felt sick from the chemo while she was under it. So while it was a thoughtful gift she loved, she can’t use it anymore and had to put it away in a closet. Just a thing to consider before doing all that work. Maybe save the really nice blanket as a recovery gift!
A friend of me got cancer lately. Guessing from the proud smile on her face showing the pictures of her hair-cutting-party, maybe that could be something. Grab some snacks, drinks, friends and a music box and go from a Karen long bob over punk to aang the last airbender. If you want it a little more premium and you know a fun hairdresser, hire them. For my friend, it was a very empowering experience.
does your friend collect something (like teddys or so), you might be able to do this with knitting... snacks can be difficult because chemo often does damage to the gingiva, so something hard or spicy might not be good for him
in case your friend is not used to being ill, maybe find out what types of "sitting still" things might be enjoyable, especially in case of fuzzy brain. Movies that don't require too much paying attention? Audiobooks? (Librivox has free ones, but they are public domain - perhaps try some short stories.) Friends could contribute their favorites, and they could be shared, borrowed, library trips could be made for her. Let her know it's ok to rest when she needs to. That is a gift.
a blanket would be a good supplement to the socks and hat (though not necessarily that you have to make it). My friend would nap on the couch for days after a chemo session, and he's the most fit person I know. Just having the blanket there on the couch meant he could sleep whenever he felt like it.
I know you are a distance away, but when my best friend was getting chemotherapy, I would go to the hospital, wait for her treatment to finish, and give her a ride home. We'd get her set up in a comfortable spot to rest. Her husband took her to the hospital when he went to work.
She said at the time she only wanted to see her daughter finish high school and go to college. Several degrees and honors later, plus a grandchild to spoil, and my friend is well.
I haven't walked down that road, but know that the best medicine is an escape. It's the ability to stop thinking and feeling that shit for a while.
On that level, I suggest the C D Payne book, "Youth in Revolt". I've given away over a hundred copies and gotten nothing back but, "that was the funniest book I've ever read".

My friend has cancer and during chemo suffered from dry mouth and dry skin, especially on hands and lips. Careproducts for skin and lips might be a good idea (best for sensitive skin and probably without perfume). Someone else suggested candy. She liked lemony flavours because they helped produce saliva.
A dear friend gave me this bag so I could keep my comfort items close during the infusions. I would recommend asking about what kind of chemo would they be getting, since side effects vary wildy depending on the medication. I was treated for colon cancer so I didn’t lose my hair, and one of the major side effects was the soles of my feet burning. I couldn’t stand socks!

We don't need another technical solution to this madness. We need legislation that blocks all batshit crazy AI companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and others from stealing from artists & writers (I'm mean they are using pirated books and getting away with it, so what makes you think they will pay for that blog post or art?). This is like putting a Band-Aid on the problem. They stole everything, and got away with it.
They stole all your codes, art, books, videos, and everything else out there. This solution doesn't fix anything. It might help newspaper sites where they write fresh news or detailed reports. But that will only be for the top 100 news sites. The rest of the artists and writers are doomed already because there is no law in place. I can't wait to retire, which is a few years away, and never have to look back again. But, it is the next generation of people who are going to struggle a lot 🙁

I think it’s worse than that. Wonky autocomplete is so pervasive, its hallucinated citations are making it into Google Scholar and academic library listings, getting re-cited and lent undeserved credibility. It is basically polluting and degrading the world’s scientific body of knowledge.

But if an article is publicly available what is the moral/philosophical difference who/what reads it? I can read an article to get news or I can read a book to learn to write in the same style.
