These controllers were all working on SteamOS before as far as I know, so I'm interested to see what this changes. (OK,a lot of monarchies ended via bloody revolution.) But we also have data on some things now that might be useful. Just saying: What is now is not what must be. And we can be the people that bring that into being. I don't know what the next chapter is, but we could be the ones to make it up.
We could be the people to bring into being the next chapter of whatever happens, which could be better than the one in which we are currently. This is possible. If we organize and bring it into being. I believe this. Do you? Another world is possible.
In any case, back to the great Ms. Le Guin. It's 2014. She was accepting a lifetime achievement award from one of the major organizations-- this was a bfd -- & she used it to call out the industry, to remind them that the work was about art, not profit.
"Hard times are coming, when weโll be wanting voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, & imagine grounds for hope." She went AT them for focusing on the bottom line.

And more to the point: How many people actually heard her, for real, that night? If it was one, she did her job. If one publishing industry professional with any ounce of influence, current or future, *heard* her in that room? It was worth it for that. And even if not? Better she said it, no?
We must be brave. Those of us with any anything to spend, we gotta spend it NOW. The hour is now. How can we leverage our time, our talents, our access, opportunities, skills? What's your role in meeting this moment? Because while everyone's answer will be different, nobody's can be "nothing."
This isn't -- can you hear the people sing? OK. A lot of people are going to suffer now. A lot of people are going to die because Trump & these goons are opening literal concentration camps now, pulling healthcare, actively persecuting. Never again is now.
And I'm not saying I think I personally am gonna see what's on the other side or what, right? None of us know what is to come or when or anything. But what I'm saying is that I think we're at that time when history is pushing against us and we, us, now, can be the ones to push back.
I don't know what that looks like, exactly, except that the same things are always true-- relationships are the core unite of changemaking, as @zteutsch.bsky.social puts it. grassroots organizing is always the way. We gotta build coalitions, build movements, build things that grow and last.

July 2, 1863, was Day 2 of the Battle of Gettysburg. The day saw 150,000 troops locked in combat across a four-mile front. From Little Round Top to Culpโs Hill, the clashes on day 2 of the battleโDevilโs Den, the Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, and Cemetery Hillโsaw over 20,000 casualties. Leeโs Confederates sought to break Meadeโs fishhook line, while the Union fought to hold the high ground, pushing both armies to the brink.
At dawn on July 2, 1863, Meadeโs 90,000-strong Union Army fortified Cemetery Hill, Culpโs Hill, and Cemetery Ridge, forming a defensive fishhook. Reinforced by II, V, and XII Corps, Meade prepared to repel Leeโs next strike. Across the field, Leeโs 70,000 Confederates held Seminary Ridge and Gettysburg, with Longstreetโs and Hillโs corps west, Ewellโs north. Lee planned a double assault: Longstreet to hit the Union left, Ewell the right, aiming to collapse Meadeโs line.
Delays in Confederate positioning, especially Longstreetโs march, postponed attacks until afternoon, setting up a ferocious clash. Around 4:00 PM, Lt. Gen. James Longstreetโs First Corps launched Leeโs main attack on the Union left. Hoodโs division, over 7,000 men, targeted III Corps under Maj. Gen. Daniel Sickles, who had advanced to a vulnerable salient at the Peach Orchard, leaving Devilโs Den exposed.
Hoodโs brigadesโLawโs Alabamians and Robertsonโs Texansโstormed Devilโs Den, clashing with Birneyโs division in a brutal fight among massive boulders. Artillery roared, while sharpshooters picked off officers. The Confederate push aimed to outflank the Union line, threatening Little Round Top and the entire Union position. By 4:30 PM, the Wheatfield, a 20-acre clearing south of the Peach Orchard, became a slaughterhouse.
Hoodโs and McLawsโ Confederate brigades, including Andersonโs and Semmesโ, collided with Union III Corpsโ reinforcements, like de Trobriandโs brigade. Around 5:00 PM, Barnesโ V Corps division and Caldwellโs II Corps division joined the fight, turning the field into a seesaw of charges and countercharges. Regiments like the 17th Maine and 1st Minnesota fought ferociously, but Confederate pressure surged.
By 6:30 PM, after six major assaults, the Confederates held the blood-soaked Wheatfield.
At the peach orchard along the Emmitsburg Road, McLawsโ Confederate division targeted Sicklesโ III Corps. Barksdaleโs Mississippians and Kershawโs South Carolinians charged, shattering Grahamโs brigade with rifle volleys and cannon fire. By 6:00 PM, Hillโs corps, including Andersonโs division, joined, overwhelming Humphreysโ Union line.
Sicklesโ corps crumbled, with Sickles wounded and his men retreating toward Cemetery Ridge. The collapse exposed the Union center, but Confederate momentum slowed, unable to exploit the breach fully as dusk approached.
As Devilโs Den fell, Hoodโs Confederates eyed Little Round Top, which was key to the Union left. Col. Strong Vincentโs brigade, including Col. Joshua L. Chamberlainโs 20th Maine, raced to hold the hill.
Lawโs Alabamians and Robertsonโs Texans were met with fierce fire from the Union forces as they charged repeatedly. The 20th Maine, at the lineโs end, repelled assaults, with Chamberlainโs bayonet charge breaking the Confederate push. Reinforced by Weedโs brigade, the Union held Little Round Top by dusk, saving Meadeโs flank but losing Vincent and in their desperate stand.
As evening arrived, Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewellโs Second Corps struck the Union right. Johnsonโs division attacked Culpโs Hill, clashing with XII Corps under Greene. The entrenched Union troops repelled Confederate charges. Simultaneously, Earlyโs brigades, Haysโ and Averyโs, hit Cemetery Hill, briefly seizing XI Corpsโ guns. Hancockโs II Corps counterattacked, driving the Confederates back by 9:00 PM. The Union right held firm, thwarting Leeโs plan to collapse Meadeโs line.
The day saw over 20,000 casualtiesโroughly 10,000 per side. Union resilience, from Chamberlainโs stand to Greeneโs defense, preserved Meadeโs line. Leeโs near-successes emboldened him, while Meadeโs army, battered but intact, braced for another Confederate onslaught the next day. July 2, was Gettysburgโs bloodiest day, with savage fighting in the Wheatfield, Devilโs Den, Peach Orchard, Little Round Top, and Culpโs Hill.
Leeโs plan to crush Meadeโs flanks failed against heroic stands by the Union forces, though the Confederates came agonizingly close to victory. Both armies suffered crippling losses, yet neither yielded. As night fell, Meade fortified his fishhook, anticipating Leeโs next move. Lee, believing the Union center vulnerable, planned a massive assault for July 3 as the warโs turning point loomed, setting up Gettysburgโs final day.
