What is the supposed workflow for vanilla Gnome for keyboard users?

Question is in the title: What is the supposed workflow for vanilla Gnome for keyboard users?

Is there any video/design documents which explain, how the workflow is supposed to be?

Assume, I have a full screen web browser on workspace 1. Now I want to have a terminal... I hit the super-key, type terminal, hit enter ... and then I have a terminal which does not start maximized on workspace 1, so I can either maximize the terminal and switch between the applications, arrange them side by side... or I can navigate to workspace 2, start the terminal there (the terminal will not start maximized again on an empty workspace 2) ... and switch between the two workspaces (AFAIK there are no hotkeys specified by default to navigate directly to a workspace)...

What I simply do not understand: Does the vanilla Gnome workflow expect you to use mouse and keyboard? Like hit super, use mouse to go to next workspace, type terminal, click to maximize terminal (or use super-up)?

It just seems like a lot of work/clicks/keys to achieve something simple. And to my understanding Gnome expects you to use basically every application with a full screen window anyway, so why does it not open a new application on the next free workspace full screen by default?

in reply to wolf

Keyboard -> Keyboard shortcuts from Settings will show all the available keyboard shortcuts. You can also create your own custom keybindings

These seem like a lot of personal design complaints rather than actual issues with GNOME itself.

And to my understanding Gnome expects you to use basically every application with a full screen window anyway

You misunderstood, that's not what GNOME expects at all. Your app not maximizing on startup is because the app doesn't maximize on startup. GNOME doesn't have a setting to maximize all apps by default since that should be the app's responsibility.

If you want the auto-tiling window manager experience, you'll need to install an extension (Paperwm, tiling shell, Forge, Pop shell). Extensions are like applications, there's no shame in using them.

Interesting point starting around 20:00 : on the right, people tend to believe that gun violence is caused by immoral people, and that we need to be "tougher on crime", more prisons, etc. On the left, they tend to believe that desperate people resort to desperate action to feed themselves, etc. Both sides believe gun violence to be rooted in rational behaviour, but actually most gun violence is caused by sheer stupidity : people not yielding while driving, some guy's stepping on another's foot, etc.

🌟 When someone close to a narcissist achieves professional success, it can unintentionally spark their need for attention and praise. Narcissists often feel threatened by others’ accomplishments because it challenges their fragile self-esteem. Instead of feeling proud, they may react with competition, envy, or attempts to overshadow the victory.

Understanding this dynamic helps survivors of narcissistic relationships recognize that the narcissist's response is less about you and more about their inner struggle. Remember, your achievements are valid and deserved—don’t let their need for control dim your light! 💪✨ #NarcissisticAbuse #SelfWorth #MentalHealthAwareness

Optimisation is the root of all evil.

Before long, the same parents fumbling with Kracklezam are reluctant to enroll their kids in any afterschool activities that don’t produce measurable growth in their child’s development. Fun, play, friendships, faith – also known as the most important parts of childhood – these things soon take a back seat to activities that promise a quantifiable outcome. This is all well and good when it comes to machines, which are essentially instrumental; they exist to produce specific outcomes. But when a human being’s value is reduced to the output he may or may not produce, dignity is the casualty.

Your Phone Is About To Be Hijacked: How to Survive the Mandatory Gemini AI Update (July 7)
For my Minds friends...

Something big is coming to your phone on July 7, whether you asked for it or not.

Google will begin rolling out its new Gemini AI system, what they call an “upgrade,” but what looks a lot more like a hostile takeover of our phones, our personal data, privacy, and digital autonomy. If you own an Android phone, you will be affected. And no, you won’t be asked for permission.

This isn’t just another app. This is a system-level AI that will be deeply integrated into your phone’s OS. It will replace Google Assistant. It will access your photos, videos, documents, and clipboard history. It reads your notifications. It logs your searches, It parses your text and email conversations....and it understands what they mean.

Anyone who doesn’t know that Google is the world’s largest data vacuum and wrote the book on harvesting data from unsuspecting users has been living under a rock for the last 20 years. Google now has their ultimate tool: a super-intelligent AI that won’t just vacuum up your data like before, it understands it. It doesn’t just scan your messages for keywords. It reads your sentences and figures out what you meant.

Text your mom to ask about her headache, and Gemini sends her ads for the nearest headache clinic to her and maybe drop a Pfizer plug while it's at it. If hers in also an Android phone, it can grab her information off her phone, turn it over to the clinic marketing team for extra attention. Surveillance technology with a helpful smile.

The mandatory update includes Android phones, watches, tabs, the Android app in your car control system....if it says Android, it gets the upgrade on the 7th.

Here Is What Is aA Done Deal:

You can’t uninstall it. Gemini is baking itself in to your operating system, it is no longer an app.

You can’t block its access completely. Disabling permissions only disables visible functions you see. It's invasive background data analysis continues.

You can’t opt out if you use any part of the Google ecosystem. If you use Chrome, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, or Play Store, you’re already giving it permission to spy on your life. Find alternates to these services if you don't want vacuumed.

What You Can Do:

If your phone still gives you a choice, don't accept the Gemini switchover. But know this: most newer Androids won't ask, you won't even see it happen.

Once updated, turn off as many permissions as possible in your Settings. Especially anything related to voice input, camera, location, and clipboard access. Not just Google apps too.

Use alternate apps for messaging, browsing, and email. DuckDuckGo, Brave, ProtonMail, etc. will help limit exposure.

Minimize your Google account usage. Remove Google accounts from secondary devices, or switch to a de-Googled phone if you’re really serious.

If you aren't real sharp on the inner parts of your phone, I've written a plain-english step through of these settings for the non-tech crowd. You can find it below my signature, I hope it helps.

Final Word

The integration of AI into your most personal device without informed consent, without transparency, and without full control, is not a feature. I believe it to be a major violation of privacy. You shouldn't have to be a tech wizard to keep your personal information safe and out of corporate hands! This is going to become a much bigger topic in our life in the immediate future as we are transitioned whether we want to be or not, into the era of AI.

Best of luck,

SourdoughSam

P.S. I apologize to my regular readers who are more used to my homestead and personal ramblings. As most know, I wore a tech sword in another life. Old habits come back when I see technology running rough-shod over an unsuspecting public. I had to speak out.

Step-by-step for those of us who need steps.... 😀

🔧 How to Push Back Against the Gemini AI Update by SourdoughSam

Step 1: Don’t Tap “Upgrade” or “Switch” If prompted. If your phone still gives you a prompt to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on the 7th, do not accept it. Tap “No thanks” or “Keep Assistant.” But be aware: on many devices as of July 7, this choice may no longer appear at all.

Step 2: Check Your Default Assistant Setting after the update....

Go to: Settings → Apps → Default Apps → Digital Assistant App If Gemini is listed, try switching it back to “Google Assistant” or “None.” Not all phones will allow this anymore, depending on your update level.

Step 3: Turn Off Personalization and Activity Sharing Go to: Settings → Google → Manage Your Google Account → Data & Privacy Scroll to “Web & App Activity,” “Location History,” and “YouTube History”—turn them all off. This limits what Gemini can learn.

Step 4: Disable Gemini-Specific Features (If Available) Some phones now have a Gemini Settings section. If it exists, open it and turn off every toggle you find—especially those for “Contextual Awareness,” “Message Access,” and “Phone Controls.”

Step 5: Use Alternative Apps for Sensitive Tasks Avoid Google services when possible. Use:

DuckDuckGo or Brave for browsing

ProtonMail for email

Signal, Telegram, or Discord for messaging. This reduces the information Gemini can access through app integrations.

Step 6: Remove Unused Google Accounts If you have extra Google accounts on your phone, remove them: Settings → Accounts → tap account → Remove account The fewer Google profiles, the fewer data funnels.

Step 7: Consider De-Googling or Switching Devices For those who want full control, look into custom ROMs like GrapheneOS or de-Googled phones like Murena. It's not for everyone, but it’s the cleanest break from forced AI integration.ok, It's not for everyone, but it’s the cleanest break from forced AI integration.

Lessons from a war that isn't over yet

No. 62 (31699) June 17-18, 2025
Author: Mikhail KOSTRIKOV.
yandex translation of gazeta-pravda.ru via @gilles

The protracted Iranian-Israeli conflict has resulted in another open exchange of blows, which was launched by Israel on June 13 under the name Operation "Revolt of the Lions." It is far from over, but it carries lessons.

Israel's new attack on Iran, in addition to its air and missile strikes, was accompanied by a large-scale sabotage operation. Drones were used to strike key military and industrial facilities in the Islamic Republic from Iranian territory. In addition, about a dozen of Iran's leading nuclear scientists, as well as the heads of its security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were assassinated. In most cases, they were killed in their workplaces or in their own apartments and homes, and their families were also targeted.

Israel has previously resorted to assassinating key Iranian figures. So, in 2010-2012, four major physicists were killed. At the same time, both killer shooters and explosive devices were used. In 2020, the head of the Center for Physical Research, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was shot by a remote-controlled machine gun.

However, the current terrorist attacks have been remarkable for their scale and Israel's excellent knowledge of its targets in Iran, "here and now." For example, the Islamic Republic's Air Force leadership was almost completely wiped out during a meeting, and in another incident, a drone strike targeted the bedroom of a high-ranking military official.

Even without knowing all the details, it is clear that such an operation could not have been carried out without a significant number of "assistants" within Iran, not only ordinary citizens but also those with relevant information. The scale of the incident has even led some commentators to speculate about a possible conspiracy between a group within Iran and Israel, suggesting that a coup d'état may be taking place.

Well, one lesson is clear. If a part of the so-called elite in your country has interests abroad, it becomes a natural ally of external forces. In Iran, which is a commodity exporter, there are certainly "respectable people" who have a vested interest in ensuring that oil flows freely to foreign markets. These individuals are willing to go to great lengths to lift sanctions.

But there will also be plenty of low-level assistants if the younger generation is brought up in the spirit of qualified consumerism. They won't refuse easy money, but they won't think about the consequences.

However, after suffering a heavy blow, Iran found the strength to respond. And the response was unexpectedly effective. In recent days, social media has been flooded with videos of Iranian missiles hitting various Israeli targets. Many have already joked that Israel's highly publicized Iron Dome missile defense system has turned out to be a complete failure.

We won't be ironic. The fact is that Israel's air defense and missile defense systems are indeed among the best in the world, and they have extensive combat experience. However, they have failed to cope with the Iranian response, missing not just one or two targets but numerous ones, resulting in more and more ruins in Israeli cities.

Israel's painful experience is also a lesson: today, the means of attack dominate the means of defense. In other words, there are no invulnerable individuals, as was the case in the 20th century when the USSR and the United States realized the inevitability of mutual destruction and attempted to negotiate.

But the politicians of that time had the recent experience of the Second World War, which they saw with their own eyes, something that the current “elites” do not have. However, there is a crisis in the global capitalist system, which has exhausted its sources of growth, a declining hegemon in the form of the United States, and its hopes of solving problems through “controlled” conflicts, as well as a sense of exclusivity among the “elites” that creates an illusion of invincibility.

This brings to mind Lenin's words that "capitalism is the cause of wars and all their misfortunes," and that "world domination is, in short, the essence of imperialist policy, which is continued by imperialist war."
