The contrast between the bright-green promise of this photo (kindly taken by @migguzi) and gray-bleak horror of fascism is really hitting me today—including because it’s literally pouring and thundering heavily. The storm outside my window mirrors the severe political storm that so many of us are struggling to weather, with “solidarity” as our umbrella(s).
I somehow managed to finish up the new curated zine featured here at what might be considered an “odd” moment—one that in turn, shapes some of the zine’s content. A beloved friend was arrested last week in what may likely become “Haymarket 2.0,” or at least that’s how it feels in terms of the way cops and their minions (newspapers, fash, soft snitches, etc.) are maliciously spinning it. I and many others have dropped everything to do support for them and others arrested in relation to this same situation of fascist state repression. Solidarity efforts are where anarchism shines, and the beauty of that radiates outward and keeps us (or at least me) going. Yet they also take an enormous toll on our hearts, minds, and bodies—for no one, whether friend or not, should have to face state repression, incarceration, and all other forms of state violence.
It’s been a thoroughly exhausting week, emotionally and spiritually.
Yet maybe it was precisely the right time to complete this zine: “Everyday Antifascism: 14 Ways That Solidarity Keeps Us Safer.” Because daily, millions in both the States and beyond are experiencing the myriad assaults perpetrated by christofascism—its own “special” version of past fascisms. Right now, there may never be a sunny day that doesn’t also involve some new fascistic atrocity, sometimes close to home, and sometimes further afield, but always demanding that we strive hard(er) to live up the ideals of solidarity.
This zine, like prior ones in this “series,” is a humble sampler of some of the many, many possible ways solidarity is routinely practiced. It is meant to offer a bit of sustenance by mutually supporting each other with stories of resistance. And it’s a gift to you, with love+solidarity from all who contributed to this zine.
