Challenging the Media Myth of Latino Machismo

"Recognizing Feminist Strides in Latin America Patriarchy is alive and well throughout the world. But the English-language media flatters itself by one-sidedly portraying machismo as a particularly Latin American malady, all the while overlooking significant feminist gains made in the region. Israel’s ultra-orthodox party, Degel HaTorah, says its Knesset members have resigned from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

The move comes over a dispute on the failure to draft a bill to exempt students of Yeshiva, educational institutions focused on the study of traditional Jewish religious texts, from military service, it said in a statement.

The real "villain" here is, in fact, the US, which is allowing Israel to do what it wants.

Anyway, we'll see what comes of this meeting, in practice.

you can bypass (some) paywalled articles using

You could also block cookies from the site in your web browser

Huge rallies take place in Argentina in support for Palestine en.mehrnews.com/news/234298/Hu…

I’ve seen resounding condemnation from countries and politicians against Bob Vylan for chanting “death to the IDF,” yet virtual silence from them against Israeli occupiers killing a U.S. citizen in the West Bank and Israeli military in Gaza shooting Palestinian teen boys in their testicles.

When empty chants from a harmless musician offend you more than literal war crimes from a nuclear power then you’re not protecting peace you’re enabling genocide.

“My inescapable conclusion has become that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. Having grown up in a Zionist home, lived the first half of my life in Israel, served in the I.D.F. as a soldier and officer and spent most of my career researching and writing on war crimes and the Holocaust, this was a painful conclusion to reach, and one that I resisted as long as I could. But I have been teaching classes on genocide for a quarter of a century. I can recognize one when I see one.

The continued denial of this designation by states, international organizations and legal and scholarly experts will cause unmitigated damage not just to the people of Gaza and Israel but also to the system of international law established in the wake of the horrors of the Holocaust, designed to prevent such atrocities from happening ever again. It is a threat to the very foundations of the moral order on which we all depend.”

#ExtremeWeather is the #UK's new normal, says Met Office

Justin Rowlatt, July 13, 2025

"The UK is breaking #heat and #rainfall records increasingly frequently as its climate continues to warm, the Met Office has warned.

"The country's changing weather patterns mean the UK now experiences a 'notably different' climate to what it was just a few decades ago, its State of the UK Climate report says.

"We now have many more very hot days and many fewer extremely cold nights, according to this latest assessment.

"It shows just how much #GlobalWarming caused by the vast emissions of #GreenhouseGases our civilisation creates is reshaping the country's climate.

"Climate change is bringing more #SevereWeather events like #storms and #flooding - and inevitably the country's changing climate is having an impact on the #NaturalWorld, with some species suffering.

"The report focuses on 2024, when the UK experienced its second-warmest February, warmest May, warmest spring, fifth-warmest December, and fifth-warmest winter since records began in 1884.

"The Met Office highlights that some of these records have already been surpassed in 2025 - more evidence of this trend towards more extreme weather.

"This summer many parts of the country are in the throes of their third heatwave with very warm weather reaching into #Wales, #NorthernIreland and #Scotland as well as southern #England."

Excerpt: "At the East Providence summer camp, Aiden, a rising third grader, played tag, built structures with magnetic tiles, played a fast-paced game with the other kids to review addition and subtraction, learned about pollination, watched a nature video and ate club-provided chicken nuggets.

"Veteran teachers from his school corrected him when he spoke without raising his hand and offered common-sense advice when a boy in his group said something inappropriate.

" 'When someone says something inappropriate, you don’t repeat it,' teacher Kayla Creighton told the boys between answering their questions about horseflies and honeybees.

"Indeed, it’s hard to find a more middle-of-the road organization in this country than the Boys & Girls Club.

"Just last month, a Republican and a Democrat sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House celebrating the 165-year-old organization as a 'beacon of hope and opportunity.' The Defense Department awarded the club $3 million in 1991 to support children left behind when their parents deployed for the Persian Gulf. And ever since, the Boys & Girls Club has created clubs on military installations to support the children of service members. Military families can sign up their kids for free.

"Aiden’s mother has started looking into afternoon child care for September when kids return to school in Rhode Island.

" 'It costs $220 a week,' Reyes said, her eyes expanding. 'I can’t afford that.'

"The single mother and state worker said she’ll probably ask her 14-year-old son to stay home and watch Aiden. That will mean he would have to forgo getting a job when he turns 15 in the fall and couldn’t play basketball and football.

" 'I don’t have any other option,' she said.

"At home, Aiden would likely stay inside on a screen. That would be heartbreaking since he’s thrived getting tutoring and 'learning about healthy boundaries' from the Boys & Girls Club program, Reyes said."
