@HaleakalacraterIn the building, we have a problem, even if the building itself was finished in 2012. It belongs and was paid for by the three government levels, municipal, provincial and federal. The water drainage from the terrace is having problems. The pipe collars, some of them are breaking when the amount of rain is excessive.
I think the norms/materials/plans were ok when it was on the architects' drafting tables, but now it rains a lot more and more violently than when they built the building. Two months ago, we had a real deluge and some apartments were flooded and a few days ago, other dwellings were damaged as well. There must be maybe 20 apartments in all that were touched by this.
I've heard that the norms were increased either during construction or right after so the collars could withstand the amount of rain.
The longer the water has to travel, the worst it gets. As an example, floors 2 and 3 belong to a women's co-op, and they have 19 units, while the rest of the 109 apartments belong to retirees, old people. Out of those 19 units, 8 units are damaged which is pretty damn close to 50% of the co-op. Now it's a question of insurance companies that play hard to get. Some women can't even live in their apartments, others were not insured for this type of damage.
As an example of the damage, one of them has no ceiling left in the kitchen and bathroom, and I know others have extensive damage as well. Walls have been ripped up to prevent creation of fungus in the structure, there was time wasted with engineers, architects, government people and like I said before insurance people who of course, pay a lot less than what the work that needs to be done, costs, who pays what etc.
So every time there is excessive rain, we all panic in the building. It's just a question of time before one after the other, the collars break.

@HaleakalacraterAnd I feel lucky as hell. I live on the 5th floor and got nothing. On the 10th floor, units above me got a little damage, the 4th floor below didn't get anything but the 3rd floor, all hell broke loose and they were monumentally flooded. I went to give the co-op ladies a hand, brought my cotton floor mop with me and helped mopped up the water that was still trickling under the walls on their floors. It was ugly. An emergency plumber came with a vacuum to pick up the water to help out.
terrible! These collars - are they like couplings at pipe joints? Seems like if the pipes are ok they need to locate all the collars and fix them. Fernco makes flexible couplings they should investigate using these. Now there are flexible video scopes where they can drill a small hole in a wall and see where couplings are located.
@HaleakalacraterYeah! I didn't know the English terms, I searched for the English equivalency and it said collars (in French, the word is collets = collars, I had specified for plumbing but...). I think what they are planning to do is fix them as soon as they break but hell that means we'll all be under stress for years to come... There are 109 units + 19 for the co-op. Plus the damn smoke detectors and general fire alarm go crazy because of the dust when they take down a wall (the gypsum boards and plaster). This is a concrete building (slabs for the floors and ceilings (well, d'uh - another man's ceiling is another man's floor LOL) but part of the walls are soundproofed and built of gypsum board...

The problem could be expansion and contraction of the multi-story vertical piping, causing cracking at some joints. This Fernco coupling allows flexibility for pipe movement.
@HaleakalacraterYour suggestion does make a lot of sense. When I studied in technology of architecture, we had learned about contraction in winter and expansion of materials in summer. We had calculated the difference in a 20-floor building and it varied something like 4 or 5 inches or something. Not only were the materials under great stress, but the fasteners of materials had to give and take also. One of the building here had a bad design or I dunno if it was the way the plans were done, but corner of Sherbrooke street and Peel in downtown, a piece of concrete curtain wall detached itself and went crashing through a closed terrace restaurant on the first floor, it killed two customers. That happened maybe 20-25 years ago? Can't recall now.

Road construction companies here cut in half all the materials. Like, say in Sweden they lay down 8 inches of crushed stone as an underlayer, over here, they put 3 or 4 inches. And they charge the government twice or three times what companies in Sweden do. Roads are all owned by government, either federal, provincial or municipal.
@HaleakalacraterThe worst? When they repair roads, they usually just scrape off the top asphalt layer and lay asphalt over the road or street. I roll my eyes so damn hard each time, it gives me a headache because the problem is structural, but they make cosmetic repairs, it looks good for about 2 years, max, and then they have to redo the whole thing again or let the street or road deteriorate more.
we have amazing asphalt machines they tear up the road and conveyor it into empty trucks and the machine is laying new asphalt behind, I think they can do 300 feet per minute!

But the thing that bugs me is the road that cracks deeply and chunks come off, it's a sign the structure of the road, in lower layers of materials is working, shifting under the strain of traffic, the problem is structural. No matter how nice the top layer looks after, the shifting and crumbling will still go on. There is also the fact that on the roads, there are much more trucks and 18-wheelers than there was before, like 50 years ago.

I have a real use case for smart lamps. I want to add light switches to places where there is no wiring, and I don't want to destroy my walls to do so. So I've looked into it, even bought a few components. First tests went fine, so I bought more to cover all places where I wanted to do that, and behold, it doesn't work. The stupid fucking things only work with a single switch at a time - unless you add a hub that must be connected to the internet. There's no technological limitation on multi-pairing, it's just a RF receiver on the lamp and a battery-powered transmitter on the switch, but they limit it to one just to force you to have the retarded hub and have to connect it to the internet. How I fucking hate it.
that matched my blutooth experience with car + phone. if i connect my wife's phone it no longer recognizes mine, and i must 'pair' again. if you need to reset bt and pair every time you use the switch, it's easier to just wire in a mechanical switch.

Life reminder. If you are poor you can’t afford cheap stuff. Today I learned a good lesson. If a paint is super cheap it also means it’s super bad. Had to spend quite some money on paint today (mistake number one was the idea to paint cupboards instead of just doors as those are visible), and seeing how much it will cost (basically the cost of making the entire furniture so far), I figured I would hack the system and grab the paint that was three times cheaper. Pressing fast-forward few hours I’m back in the shop buying the expensive paint. That piece of crap I bought stood nowhere near a paint. More like colored water at best.

Last night was invited to go see The Rose City Band, in Toronto (very chill and psychedelic btw) and there’s a local audiophile recording fan that asked the band’s permission to hook up his audio equipment (some really cool Zoom recorders and some mics…one right off the sound board).
We asked why and then proceeds to tell us a pretty cool story about John Coltrane – Live in Antibes, France (July 26 or 27, 1965). Apparently there were only 2 recordings of those famous performances…the official recording and a bootleg from some fan.
Apparently this fan would’ve trucked in this big 4 track recorder, apparently quite cumbersome equipment, to the venue to capture one of the most historical performances ever played.
There’s a ton of bootleggers trying to grab one of these gem performances.
And the venue was packed with real and enthusiastic fans. The Rose City Band, on their way to Pittsburg, are living by a totally different set of values that is refreshing!

technically you are “detained” at a traffic stop. There is a difference between being detained and arrested. Veteran can be “disabled veterans” for irritable bowel syndrome, tinnitus, hell I know people who claimed herpes and got it approved as a “disability”. They make it sound like he’s missing limbs or some shit. I’m willing to bet they detained everyone on site until they figured out what in the hell was going in.

in reply to Chronic-Yonic • • •terrible! These collars - are they like couplings at pipe joints? Seems like if the pipes are ok they need to locate all the collars and fix them. Fernco makes flexible couplings they should investigate using these. Now there are flexible video scopes where they can drill a small hole in a wall and see where couplings are located.

I didn't know the English terms, I searched for the English equivalency and it said collars (in French, the word is collets = collars, I had specified for plumbing but...). I think what they are planning to do is fix them as soon as they break but hell that means we'll all be under stress for years to come... There are 109 units + 19 for the co-op. I'm not sure they want to tear down all the walls to change them all...
Plus the damn smoke detectors and general fire alarm go crazy because of the dust when they take down a wall (the gypsum boards and plaster). This is a concrete building (slabs for the floors and ceilings (well, d'uh - another man's ceiling is another man's floor LOL) but part of the walls are soundproofed and built of gypsum board...

Because let's face it the construction industry is one of the most corrupted, we call it one of the mafia strongholds, like construction of roads and all that. I had watched way back when a documentary on road construction in Sweden which has (or had) pretty much the same temps and weather we do. The opening questions were: how much does road construction in Sweden cost? And why do their roads last 10 times ours? What is the difference between what we do and what they do?
Road construction companies here cut in half all the materials. Like, say in Sweden they lay down 8 inches of crushed stone as an underlayer, over here, they put 3 or 4 inches. And they charge the government twice or three times what companies in Sweden do. Roads are all owned by government, either federal, provincial or municipal.

Very true, they'd have to rip it all off and begin again, if they followed the Swedish example and do it right... I think American roads are way better, from what I remember when I went there once in a while.
