The interface is extremely simple. You have a basic bottom bar with a main menu and search field at the far left, app icons that also serve as a task bar in the middle, and a calendar and system menu on the right. If you have something playing in an app, you also get a media indicator next to the calendar to let you control playback.
You can't change anything apart from the wallpaper and the position of that task bar: bottom, left or right, no top option. You also have a dark mode.
You have touchpad gestures, with a 3 finger swipe up to display an overview of all your windows and virtual desktops, and 4 finger swipes left or right to switch between desktops.
Windows use the windows button layout, on the right hand side, wit minimize, maximize and close, plus a menu to interact with the window.
You can run any webapp from the CHrome Web store, which has a lot of stuff, you can add any website as a shortcut that will appear in the main menu and be usable as an app, or you can enable the Linux development environment from the settings.
It gives you a Debian container, with access to basic repos, but you can install faltpak, add flathub, and run anything you'd like, although since it's a container, some stuff won't work, like OBS for example
The problems:
First, the killer feature for ChromeOS is that it has its own Android container that runs any Android app really well. CHrome OS Flex can't do that. It doesn't have access to Android apps, which is a big bummer.
Then, we have more factual, UX based problems, like the window inconsistencies. Chrome OS uses web apps and passes them for desktop applications. The problem is, not all apps are treated in the same way. Opening youtube, or the file manager brings a window that looks like an application: short title bar, and standard controls. But if I open Google drive, then I get a browser window with a URL bar, tabs and a different title bar. Then, if I open Google sheets, I don't get a separate application window, it opens in a tab inside of the Google drive window, so I don't get an app icon in the task bar.
It's completely illegible: you never know what to expect when opening an application, where it's going to open, where your tab or window is, and if it's been minimized by another application.
Then you have that horrible visual aid when resizing a window: as your mouse pointer gets towards a window's side, you get this black bar that appears around that side.
Moving windows around sucks. See, the theme is either completely white, or dark. The title bar merges with the header or toolbar. Except you can only drag a window from its titlebar, and you don't know exactly where it starts or ends, because the title bar doesn't show a window title, just buttons. And you can't press Super or Alt while dragging anywhere on the window to move it either.
The settings are all displayed in a single page, with a sidebar. CLicking the sidebar moves you to the relevant section of that single settings page. Moves you, not scrolls you, so you don't immediately realize it's a single page. If you scroll yourself, the sidebar selected item doesn't change. So the sidebar is now telling me I'm in the Accessibility settings, when I'm looking at the network settings. Pretty bad design.
And then the overview. It lists all your open windows, pretty useful. But ChromeOS doesn't know what is a window or not, so no, I don't see all my windows, I see all individual apps, and then a Chrome window with multiple tabs that should be separate apps.

"Humanitarian" aid to Gaza?
(This is an English version of infosec.exchange/@ErikvanStrat… - in NL).
Tuesday July 15, the Dutch foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp told journalists, in Brussels, after the EU meeting discussing sanctioning Israel that the amount of aid is already increasing following EU "pressure" (translated from nos.nl/artikel/2575144-veldkam…):

THAT IS, BY FAR, NOT ENOUGH!
The Israeli website gaza-aid-data.gov.il/main/ has meanwhile been updated with data through July 14. According to that website, the following number of trucks carrying aid entered Gaza:
July 13: 160 trucks (Veldkamp said 160)
July 14: 173 trucks (Veldkamp said 180)
(A few more details from that site in a minute in🧵2/2).
So Veldkamp exagerrated a bit. To clarify that the amount of aid is WAY to little, while essential stuff is fully missing (among other things, tents, water, gas for cooking), I've copied data from gaza-aid-data.gov.il/main/, a site that (deliberately?) makes information hard to comprehend, and put that into two tables - see below (I may have made a few typo's, don't shoot the messenger).
Data merged by me in the aid-type "Other":
- Essential infrastructure equipment;
- UN and International organizations equipment;
- Shelter Equipment;
- Mixed Aid;
- Medical Equipment - for field hospital.
The truncation "MedS " means Medical Supplies.
The Israeli website does not mention tonnage _and_ the number of trucks for each type of aid. Therefore I've split each table in aid-type specified in tonnange, and the other types in number of trucks. You can find more info and a summary in the Alt text.

Just discovered this beautiful classic from Shakira on tube.matrix.rocks - what a breath of fresh air to watch it without those annoying ads! As a 50-year-old man who's been following Shakira's career, I have to say this song from 2002 still gives me goosebumps.
The way she expresses vulnerability and devotion in "Underneath Your Clothes" is so genuine and powerful. The music video, featuring Shakira's then-boyfriend Antonio de la Rúa, perfectly captures the intimate nature of the song. La marine chinoise a publié les premières images de deux chasseurs J-35 qui ont rejoint sa flotte. Cette nouvelle classe d'appareils devrait opérer depuis des bases terrestres et au sein de futures escadrilles aériennes embarquées. Cette annonce intervient moins de deux semaines après la publication des premières images de variantes terrestres du J-35 en service dans l'armée de l'air de l'Armée populaire de libération.
Contrairement à l'armée de l'air, qui exploite des chasseurs J-20 de cinquième génération depuis février 2017, l'entrée en service du J-35 marque la première fois que la marine déploie des avions dotés de capacités furtives avancées. L'entrée en service de ce chasseur suit de près l'entrée en service actif du chasseur J-15B de « génération 4+ », un avion considérablement plus lourd destiné à opérer aux côtés du J-35 dans le cadre d'une combinaison "High-low".
Le J-35 a été développé par la Shenyang Aircraft Corporation comme un homologue plus léger du J-20 de la Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. Bien qu'initialement il n'était pas prévu qu'il entre en service dans l'armée de l'air, il est depuis longtemps prévu qu'il soit acquis par la marine pour des opérations à partir des porte-aéronefs. Sa taille le place dans une fourchette unique entre le J-20 lourd et le F-22 américain, et le F-35 monomoteur, beaucoup plus léger.
Les coûts de développement du J-35 sont estimés nettement inférieurs à ceux du J-20, la grande majorité de ses technologies ayant déjà été développées pour son homologue plus lourd. L'entrée en production en série du J-35 fait de la Chine le premier pays à produire en série deux classes de chasseurs de cinquième génération en parallèle. L'acquisition de cet avion devrait compléter l'importante expansion de la production du J-20, creusant ainsi l'écart entre la Chine et le reste du monde en termes de nombre de chasseurs furtifs mis en service chaque année. Le chasseur devrait bientôt être remplacé, car l'Armée populaire de libération devrait commencer à mettre en service les premiers chasseurs de sixième génération au début des années 2030.

They found malware on the AUR. Reminder that anyone can put stuff on the AUR and when an AUR client offers to let you inspect the package build scripts, it's because it's no one's job to make sure the package is safe.
"But people tell me to install stuff off the AUR all the time and I'm no dev that can understand these scripts" -- Yup! This is one of Arch's primary problems. It's why they make it non-trivial to bootstrap into getting stuff off AUR to begin with, but that's not enough when 98% of Arch users need something off it.

Eine gewisse Kreativität kann man ihnen in ihrer Verzweiflung nicht absprechen. Frei nach dem Motto, dass die Hilfe nur “gut” ist, wenn sie vom “Richtigen” kommt, der natürlich nur sie selber sind, und natürlich muss die Hilfe zwingend mit neuen Staatsschulden finanziert werden. Die scheinen echt intellektuell damit überfordert zu sein, dass Milei ohne Schulden helfen kann, und sind beleidigt, dass Milei ihrer Klientel hilft aus der Miesere herauszukommen und wieder ein selbstbestimmtes Leben zu führen.

XD it was fine a minute ago. XD

Le MEDEF, organisation patronale française, jette un pavé dans la mare et propose ses petites mesures, aussi scandaleuses qu’injustifiées : réduire ou supprimer les indemnités journalières des salariés en arrêt maladie pour grippe s’ils ne sont pas vaccinés. Cette idée, glissée parmi une centaine de propositions pour soi-disant « redresser les comptes de la Sécurité sociale » en vue du budget 2026, est non seulement une atteinte aux droits fondamentaux des travailleurs, en s'immisçant dans leur vie privée, mais c'est aussi une démonstration flagrante de son incompétence, somme toute logique, en matière de santé publique.
En France, la vaccination contre la grippe n’est pas obligatoire, sauf pour certains professionnels de santé ou ceux en contact régulier avec des personnes vulnérables. Le taux de couverture vaccinale, à 47,7 % pour la saison 2023-2024 selon Santé publique France, reflète un choix personnel, souvent motivé par des considérations médicales, éthiques ou pratiques. Imposer des sanctions financières aux salariés non vaccinés reviendrait donc à piétiner cette liberté de disposer de leur corps, un droit fondamental protégé par le Code de la santé publique et la jurisprudence.
Le vice-président du MEDEF, Yves Laqueille, déclare que « se faire vacciner contre la grippe participe à la santé publique » et que ceux qui refusent, montrent une « déresponsabilisation totale ». Mais qui est-il pour dire ça ? Quelles sont ses compétences, incompétences, oserait-on dire, sa légitimité ? Depuis quand le MEDEF, une organisation patronale représentant les intérêts des entreprises, s’arroge-t-il le droit de juger des choix médicaux des salariés ?... Si encore c'étaient des patrons ! La santé publique relève des autorités sanitaires et des professionnels médicaux, et encore, sans s'immiscer dans les choix éclairés de chacun, mais certainement pas d’un syndicat patronal dont l’expertise se limite à la défense des profits de ces mêmes entreprises. Et c'est là que le bât blesse. Il nous revient comme un arrière-gout de Covid, où d'aucun venait dénoncer et jeter l'opprobre sur le non-vacciné, responsable de tous les maux. Celui que l'on envie aujourd'hui. Peut-être qu'un jour finalement, on réussira à lui faire payer cette audace ?
Yves Laqueille s'attaque aux salariés qui refusent de se faire vacciner contre la grippe : "Se faire vacciner contre la grippe participe à la santé publique. C'est un exercice collectif que nous faisons pour protéger les autres. Nous posons la question de dire qu'il ne faut pas s'interroger, une fois passée cette crise antivax, qu'on sera revenu dans le pays de Pasteur, quand une personne a décidé délibérément de ne pas participer à l'exercice de protection de santé publique, est-il normal que la totalité de sa rémunération soit assumée par l'Assurance maladie et son employeur?".
Chaque salarié cotise à l’assurance chômage et à l’Assurance Maladie via des prélèvements sur fiche de paie. Des cotisations, droit acquis, permettant à tous d’accéder aux indemnités journalières en cas d’arrêt maladie, sans distinction. En proposant de moduler les indemnités selon le statut vaccinal, le MEDEF imagine donc là, une discrimination dégueulasse, mais de quel droit ? Le Code du travail et les principes fondamentaux interdisent de sanctionner un salarié pour un choix médical personnel, encore moins lorsque ce choix est légal et conforme à la législation. Mais punir est à la mode, tout comme culpabiliser, pourquoi donc ne pas punir des individus qui exercent leur droit de refuser un vaccin non obligatoire, et les culpabiliser, alors qu’ils financent eux-mêmes le système de protection sociale par leurs cotisations ?
Cette proposition est non seulement moralement répréhensible, mais aussi juridiquement douteuse. En 2021, des sources juridiques ont clairement établi qu’un employeur ne pouvait ni imposer la vaccination contre le Covid, ni sanctionner un salarié pour son refus, sauf dans les cas où la vaccination était légalement obligatoire (par exemple, pour certains soignants). Il est à rappeler tout de même les dérives de ce gouvernement pendant la crise Covid, qui n'avait pas hésité à faire fi de la loi, imposant un "vaccin" non obligatoire. Appliquer une logique similaire à la grippe, où aucune obligation légale n’existe pour une majorité des salariés, ouvre la voie à des recours en justice pour discrimination, avec de forts risques de dommages et intérêts pour ces employeurs trop zélés, tentés de suivre cette funeste voie. Du temps et de l'argent public dilapidés, une fois de plus, afin "d'emmerder" les français.
Et le MEDEF de prétendre que sa mesure vise à réduire les coûts de l’Assurance maladie, estimés à 17 milliards d’euros pour les arrêts de travail, auxquels s’ajoutent 25 milliards pour les entreprises. En quoi une organisation patronale est-elle qualifiée pour dicter des politiques de santé publique ? La vaccination contre la grippe, bien que recommandée, n’élimine pas le risque de maladie, mais est censé en atténuer les effets. De plus son efficacité baisse année après année et varie selon les souches virales et les individus. Sanctionner les non-vaccinés reposerait donc sur une simplification abusive de l’épidémiologie, ignorant les complexités des réponses immunitaires et des facteurs socio-économiques influençant les choix vaccinaux.
Le MEDEF n’a ni compétences médicales ni autorité morale pour transformer la grippe en outil de chantage. Cette proposition, qualifiée de « chantage à la seringue » par certains observateurs, ouvre une boîte de Pandore où tout comportement jugé « irresponsable » pourrait être sanctionné. Aujourd’hui, c’est le vaccin contre la grippe ; demain, un régime alimentaire non conforme aux recommandations ? Un manque d’exercice physique ? Cette pente glissante menace non seulement les droits des salariés, mais aussi le principe même de la Sécurité sociale, fondé sur la solidarité et l’égalité d’accès aux soins.
Cette proposition scélérate est une tentative de transférer la responsabilité des déficits de la Sécurité sociale sur les travailleurs, tout en détournant l’attention des véritables enjeux, comme l’optimisation fiscale des grandes entreprises ou la sous-dotation chronique du système de santé. Les salariés ne sont pas les « enfants gâtés de la santé », comme certains le prétendent, mais les contributeurs essentiels d'un système social qu’ils financent par leurs cotisations.
Monsieur Laqueille a certainement perdu là une occasion de se taire... Et certains s'en souviendront surement.
De plus, il semblerait que son implication dans Malakoff Humanis, (specialisé dans les domaines de la complémentaire santé), en tant que vice-président, augure d'un certain conflit d'intérêt.
