As I was reading the Murena’s terms of use I discovered that the voice to text feature introduced with e/OS/ 3.0 is using the Open AI API. That means our voice is sent to Open AI so they can translate it to text.
/e/OS is heavily marketed as private but in reality it has enormous privacy issues like this with their default apps and services. It's also heavily marketed as avoiding Google services but yet has privileged integration for Google services and connects to multiple by default.

@MummaBear Fortunately, the files themselves are saved in Dropbox (I made him do this years ago because I anticipated something like this was going to eventually happen). He just no longer owns a computer that can run Quicken 2002, so he can't access the files.
Will give it a try. My current path is to try to get Quicken 2004 to run, then convert 2002 to a 2004 file. Then install Quicken 2013 (the last before they switched to subscription service) and then see if I can convert 2004 to 2013. That should keep him running for a while, at least.

I am wasting my time this morning trying to fix a bathroom sink. Looks like the aerator is clogged, but it’s stuck and I can’t get the damn thing off.
Checked the supply lines and there is plenty of pressure, so the “clog” in the faucet must be in the line going to the outlet/aerator.
Currently soaking it in vinegar to see if there are any calcium/mineral deposits that have locked it up. If that doesn’t work, any other suggestions for getting the aerator off?
@scottdhansen I was thinking of trying to heat it, but I’m not quite sure how to do it since the aerator is plastic, and if I pulled out the torch, it would melt.
@eriner aerators on my Moens routinely grow black goo mildew I guess they stay wet with all the crevices and it invites nasty snots to grow. I sanitize them once in awhile with CLR or vinegar. On mine you can take screens out and reassemble it or just soak it. They’re gross.
@eriner I don’t think I’ve ever removed the aerator since the faucet was replaced 13 years ago, mainly for this exact reason. I could never get it to turn while the faucet was in place.

#GazaSoupKitchen Update: The Sugar is $100, But Our Spirits Are Free
Dear friends, supporters, and fellow believers in the power of food and love,
We’re back with a dispatch from the heart of the chaos — Gaza. Where prices fluctuate faster than Bitcoin and the “sugar market” is apparently hotter than Wall Street.
True story: sugar in Gaza now costs $100 per kilo. A kilo of flour? That humble pantry staple you can buy in the U.S. for under a dollar? Here, it’s $20.
So how do we keep going?
We invented dynamic budgeting. No joke. Every kitchen’s daily budget shifts based on the price of lentils, pasta, flour, and oil. It’s like running a commodities exchange — but instead of investors, we have uncles with ladles and kids with empty plates. And somehow, we make it work.
We’re now operating 10.5 kitchens (yes, the half counts — it’s part-time but full of heart). These kitchens serve meals daily without fail. Our crew is now 60 strong, with most locations run by a team of six working around the clock, often with little sleep but lots of resolve.
We're also delivering clean water. And our “flexible food” initiative keeps rolling — think falafel wraps one day, fresh mulukhiya leaves the next, and even slushies for the kids. Sweetened not with sugar, but with cough syrup — because cough medicine is one of the few things that still has sugar. That’s where we are now.
Our classroom still runs three times a week, led by our amazing niece Fatema, bringing some structure, joy, and snacks to kids who deserve better than war.
Our medical point is treating up to 85 patients a day, and we send meals to the hospital daily. A warm plate of food might not fix everything, but it can give a parent or child just enough strength to hold on.
But behind every slushie, every lentil pot, there’s pain.
Yesterday, I lost my friend Murad and his entire family. Their tent was bombed. Murad and I went to elementary and middle school together. He was one of the smart kids — we competed for grades. He had a future, a wife, children. Now, nothing. Another bright light extinguished in a place full of ghosts.
And there’s another story that won’t leave me — a Palestinian woman sprinting through the camp in a panic, trying to find a spoonful of sugar for her husband who had slipped into a diabetic coma. She knocked on every tent. Nothing — no dates, no candy, no halva. She returned after 15 minutes to find him gone. He didn’t die from a bomb. He died from the blockade. From cruelty masked as policy.
Now people sweeten tea with canned pineapple syrup. That’s what survival looks like.
Still — we go on. Most of our operations focus on the west of Gaza, where nearly a million displaced Palestinians are sheltering. And we continue to show up. Even when the fire under the stove isn’t just metaphorical.
We’re hearing that more aid may enter Gaza by Thursday. If it does, prices could drop — even if just a little. That’s what hope looks like now: praying sugar costs less than gold.
We’re also speaking out — engaging the media, pushing back against disinformation, and confronting bad actors like the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. We will not rest until the people responsible for this suffering are held accountable.
We’ve never stopped. Not for a day. Not when we were displaced. Not when flour disappeared. Not when the skies rumbled.

The "realists" are the ones telling us that we can't have nice things. They say that if the Dems promise bold action - protecting abortion, controlling assault weapons, funding infrastructure, raising the minimum wage, providing health care - they will lose elections. When Dems *do* win elections, they insist that none of these things are possible: the #SupremeCourt will strike them down, or the GOP will #filibuster them, or the business lobby will subvert them.
For these realists, every negotiation is a grand bargain in which all the grownups meet in smoke-filled rooms where they niggle and cajole and flatter their way into tiny, incremental policy changes, "signature achievements" that are so modest that the enemy can't possibly weaponize them as the deeds of radical socialists who will bring the country to ruin.
To do otherwise, the realists say, is to court catastrophe. Wielding power will destroy the "comity" that makes the legislature effective. It will "delegitimize" the institutions whose trustworthiness is key to enacting sound policy. When they go low, we *must* go high - not out of a sense of decorum, but to preserve the republic itself.
#Obama's inside/outside game was indeed remarkable. He assembled and steered a massive, grassroots get-out-the-vote campaign that leveraged his skills as a once-in-a-generation orator to inspire huge numbers of historical nonvoters to show up and cast their ballot (recall that nearly every US election is won by "none of the above," so #GOTV is a winning strategy, if you can pull it off).
Then, after the election, he switched off that grassroots.
At the time, Obama's grassroots was the most successful #netroots in history. Talented coders and digital strategists figured out how to leverage the internet to identify, mobilize and coordinate volunteers across the country. And while netroots activists did their work across the whole internet, their home base was a server the Obama campaign controlled. Once Obama won, they switched that server off.
You see, the rabble is useful when you're out there, trying to turn voters out to the polls. But if you plan to spend your term in office playing eleven dimensional chess, you don't want the mob jostling your elbow and shouting in your ear.
If #FDR's (possibly apocryphal) motto was "I want to do it, now make me do it"; Obama's was "I want to do it, now go away."
Rather than surrounding himself with the great unwashed, Obama created a cabinet of technocrats, grownups from the upper ranks of industry and the consultant class.
Think of #TimGeithner, Obama's Treasury Secretary, who counseled that the banks should be bailed out with no strings attached, not even a requirement that they halt the seizure and liquidation of swathes of Americans' family homes.
the second he hired Geithner, I saw through Obama. I loved him, supported him all the way, ever since the DNC convention years before. But once Geithner was hired…I knew who he was and who he served.
When Geithner told Obama he had to "#FoamTheRunway" for the crashing banks with the roofs over everyday Americans' heads, there were no grassroots organizers foaming at the mouth in outrage. Thus did Obama end the #GreatFinancialCrisis - by creating the Great #ForeclosureCrisis:
But Obama's signature achievement wasn't his economic policy - it was his *#healthcare* policy. The #AffordableCareAct was a carefully triangulated compromise, one that guaranteed a massive flow of public cash to America's wildly profitable health insurance monopoly and steered clear of any socialist whiff that Americans would get their care from the government.
Blair is an interesting comparison. Blair was king of the "adult-in-the-room" archetype. But, for all that the Blair government was a terrible disappointment in the home stage (let's not even go into foreign policy), most peoples lives did get at least a bit better (even if some of the stuff was done by stealth). Today's Labour seem to have bought the "don't scare the horses" line without also seeing the necessity of also actually making peoples lives better.
@IanSudbery this was what happened over the course of the last Labour government - in the beginning they did what they could for people under the table while keeping the right wing press happy and quiet with the necessary spin, but as time went on they started to believe their own publicity and forget about the whole "making people's lives better" bit. what we have now is the people who caught that tail end of things and forgot that anything at all preceded it. plus all the people who would have joined the Conservative Party had it looked at all electable before David Cameron, and who saw Labour as their path to power instead. (you can tell that this robust, savvy political judgement of theirs lives on today...)

Poi-haps not realistic but the idea is that it's ez to manufacture low-cost goods in New Spain then ship them up north thru the gulf of whatever and transit parts up the Mississippi to factories for final assembly for finished goods- then outward to everywhere in the US 'cept the west coast.

I never sailed the Pacific, but from what I've been told -- it's **much** rougher than the Atlantic. Surfing is practically non-existant on the East Coast, for example.
There's plenty of ports on the East Coast that could be enlarged to receive more traffic, but I think the powers that be don't want that in their backyard.
