What we post online will be lost in time, but what we write by hand can last generations. I have letters written by my great-grandparents before I was born, and they're a great glimpse into the past. Over a year ago, I posited that AI coding stuff isn't about coding or productivity. It's about some % of people who feel a stimulus-reward thing from using it, similar to how some people feel when gambling. It feels so overwhelmingly good to some % of people they don't even bother to measure if their AI stuff is actually doing anything useful, because of course it must be, because the feeling is so strong.

It seems more & more people are also finding this idea lately.

But I've also realized that it seems to apply to any of the prompt-style AI things, not just coding. There is some kind of slot machine playing mania (sorta, not exactly) thing it triggers in some % of people. I'm certain of it now.

If anything, it makes me feel a bit less angry and more sad towards the people with this AI prompt-query compulsion. It feels closer to when you see someone with a gambling addiction stuck at a gambling machine.

this reflects my experience pretty strongly.

I've been pretty staunchly opposed to this wave of gen-AI since chatGPT launched in 2022, and never intentionally touched it until three months ago, when I finally felt like I needed to spend at least a little bit of time with it to understand/prove what I was opposed to. it almost *immediately* triggered an addiction response (of the gambling category, as you pointed out), to the point where within a week I could barely sleep, and all I could think about was prompting, explicitly like I needed to be using it 24/7 and trying to figure out the right way to extract quality output from it, under this sudden manufactured feeling of urgency.

luckily, i got burnt out on it pretty "quickly" (roughly a month) which forced me to step back, and had lived long enough to be able to identify what this cycle was. It was also tremendously helpful to both have had a long critical perspective built against the tech that I had now tested against, and a really high bar of personal work quality that I was able to use to categorize that output of these tools as "complete shit".

it's wild to me that as someone who was pretty publicly and vocally against the principle of the tech, this addiction loop still hit me at full force, on the very first prompt I ever fed it. for people without the life experience, critical lens, and body of high quality personal work to measure against, I can't imagine how many could possibly escape from the slot machine cycle. "if I can just figure out exactly how to word this prompt, it'll solve all my problems...". I wonder how those who do escape don't talk about it publicly out of shame (me, until this post).

the silver lining for me personally is that it did end up having some kind of positive effect on how I approach my work. reading through so much slop for a month re-lit a fire within me to be even more intentional and human in my work, whether through writing or code.

Me, I have next to no susceptibility to gambling-- for one thing, I understand too much about math, the odds of winning are so low the whole thing strikes me as contemptibly absurd-- and for another, I'm a digital artist so gut-wrenched by the uncanny valley effect of putting other people's work through a meat grinder and regurgitating it into a shambling frankenitation of art that it makes me feel physically ill, so I haven't even touched it. I've just been sitting here mystified like WHY EVEN...

If that's the type of effect it's having on people who aren't wired like me... good gawd, we're in deep shit.

Burger King is absolute trash in Charleston SC. Nothing but the most vile nig-nogs work there. They ended up closing all but a couple of locations because of that. The few left have the same problem and are dirty and nasty.

We dont have an In N Out Burger or a Whataburger.

Culvers (new to area with White Staff) and 5 Guys (also White Staff) are overrated...but at least it's White people.

I usally go for a Cookout Burger. The burger is decent, the fixings are fresh and they are staffed by White people as well.

David Barton isn’t just a primary pitchman for the Ten Commandments law in Texas

His fingerprints appear on 28 bills that have cropped up before the legislatures in 18 states this year.

A data analysis of the bills exposes how their language, structure and requirements are inherently identical.

In dozens of instances, they match model legislation pitched by Barton verbatim.

At the Texas hearing, Barton’s eyes fixated on the cover of the rare 1782 Aitken Bible.
“It also says it’s ‘a neat Edition of the Holy Scriptures for the use of schools,’” he continued. “It has the Ten Commandments.”

In actuality, Barton lifted language from Philadelphia printer Robert Aitken
calling on Congress to sanction a Bible that could also be for
“the use of schools.”

Christian nationalists have for years falsely claimed the Revolutionary-era printing includes a government promotion of Christianity.

Barton has long been accused of taking historical quotes out of context,
and in 2012, the Christian publisher of his bestselling book on Thomas Jefferson ceased its production because “basic truths just were not there.”

Texas is one of three states in the last two years to pass a law requiring that the Ten Commandments be posted in public schools.

The mandates are part of a coordinated nationwide effort to overturn a 1980 Supreme Court ruling forbidding Kentucky from requiring Ten Commandments displays in classrooms.

First he snorted in irritation. His fur bristled like a surly and rebellious cat, disdainful of boxes and pyramids. Just like that, without even warning.

Then, for those who do not know, a kind of tender caress. Then the clawing, increasing in quantity and strength. And then, a whirlwhind of discontent. Before long, it was a runner. The fury of the wind was joined by a rain as if to tell the windstorm that it shared its rage. It threw men and leaves against the walls of the champas and, I swear, the foundations of the concrete pavilion creaked.

Wind and rain. Nowhere to turn. Better to be left in the middle of the fury than to risk the guillotine flight of the torn sheet metal as if defying the modest modesty of the galleries already cleaned, with paint and walls renovated.

But, strangely enough, the storm respected the periphery and concentrated in the center. There, where the skeleton of a pyramid rose not a few meters from the gravel.

As if to say: “No pyramids here”.

And the blankets that simulated the walls of the pyramid, swelled with that mixture of wings and sails that at times resembled a wandering ship and at times a lost aircraft, with no land in sight, only with the certainty that below was the ground waiting without haste, as if saying “just right here”.

We tried to talk to it, but, between the rain and the gale force winds, we barely managed to get it to let up long enough for the fellows who had climbed to the top to place the money sign to come down. Immediately, a strong, concentrated blowing blew the sails off and the blanket flew up the mountain.

“That’s how ghosts are born,” I thought.

We began to explain in a rushed manner that it was not to be left per se, but rather as an explanation of the policy. To reveal, that is. That there were no true or false gods. NEW YORK (AP) — "A New York City journalist was arrested on felony hate crime charges Tuesday after filming a pro-#Palestinian protest earlier this summer in which activists hurled red paint at the homes of top leaders at the #BrooklynMuseum.

"#SamuelSeligson, an independent videographer, was not involved in the #vandalism, but is accused of traveling in a car with the #activists and entering private property with them, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the case.

"The official spoke with The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

"Leena Widdi, an attorney for Seligson, said New York Police Department officers twice raided Seligson’s Brooklyn apartment in the past week before he turned himself in early Tuesday.

"She described the arrest and use of a hate crime statute as an 'appalling' overreach by police against a journalist with a city-issued press credential. Seligson, who is Jewish, is a fixture at New York City protests who has licensed and sold footage to mainstream outlets, including Reuters and ABC News.

"'Samuel is being charged for alleged behavior that is protected by the First amendment and consistent with his job as a credentialed member of the press,' Widdi said in an email. 'What is even more concerning, however, is that this member of the press is being charged with a hate crime.'"
