It hasn't done anything to discredit democracy. Not enough people cared. The NDP is the only major Canadian party that supports Palestine. Of all the candidates that pledged to support a two-way arms embargo, an end to Canadian complicity in illegal settlements, recognise anti-Palestinian racism, recognise a Palestinian state, and increase funding for humanitarian aid, the vast majority were with the NDP. (in fact, I think there's a good chance all the NDP's candidates took that pledge, but I haven't checked)
One of those candidates was Joel Harden of Ottawa Centre. He had won this same riding twice in the last two provincial elections he ran in. In the previous provincial election earlier this year, the NDP candidate, Catherine McKenney, won 55.7% of the vote, leaving the Liberal candidate, Thomas Simpson, in the dust with 23.3%. If any riding was a shoe-in for the NDP or Palestine, it was this one.
Joel Harden lost this riding with 19.6% of the vote. His Liberal opponent, Yasir Naqvi, got 62.7%. Elsewhere, across the whole country, the NDP only won 7 seats. They won 25 in 2021.

I’ve often wondered why the French Revolution was far more violent than the American Revolution. Maybe one factor was that French babies were routinely raised by extremely negligent wet-nurses; often more than half didn’t survive and the rest were severely traumatized. It apparently was accepted that the odds were grim.
Meanwhile, American children were generally raised by their parents and breastfed by their mothers, so likely were far more socially stable than the French. 🧐

So this story. My take.
2 years ago, I lodged petition e-4268, to the federal government, requesting that they suspend the Safe Third Country agreement for the US and UK, because it was clear that trans and nonbinary people were under oppressive attack by both countries.
We gathered 167k signatures, the third highest number in Canadian Parliamentary history (at the time). The government responded that "Look, we have a Safe Third Country Agreement, we can't violate it, they're designated, and besides, we already do this."
I checked. They do it, alright. 640 applicants in eight years. TWO granted.
So...petition failed.
And here we are, two years and a couple of months later, and now a federal court Judge (and bless her, she's Indigenous, Canada's (shamefully) first Indigenous judge on the federal court) has said, "Yes, you were right, this immigration officer who decided to deport this person had clearly failed to take into account the current status of anti-LGBTQ repression in the US. And the government needs to quickly revisit the Safe Third Country Agreement, to see whether it should be given an exemption for trans and nonbinary people."
So. If the government appeals, it will take months for this to be resolved. Probably, if usual timelines hold, into next year. That's important to note.
And then the government will, almost certainly, have to decide what to do. Publicly. They will either have to produce evidence that trans and nonbinary people are safe in the US (which is like saying "prove that the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny aren't having an affair", and equally as likely), or accept the court's recommendation and carve out an exemption for trans and nonbinary people in the S3CA.

I say almost certainly, because they will probably take it to the Supreme Court, where they will probably lose, due to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' explicit protection of us. Thus leading to the outcome above.
The upshot, then, is that this is the door handle turning. The door is not yet open. It likely will not be for months. But when it does come open, we're likely to see a veritable flood of trans and nb folk showing up at the border, claiming asylum.
Practically, if this is granted, they will receive monthly support and a right to work and healthcare. It won't be an easy life, but it should take years for the flood of applications to work through the courts. While that's all held up, they will all be safe in Canada.
This could save thousands of lives, in the end.

I will def be keeping an eye on this as it develops. I know a lot of young queer and NB people who are not necessarily tied down by family and other obligations (as I am, with an aging mom to look out for) who may very well choose to seek a place in Canada.

The compounds you mention as abrasives, how advanced could they have been in 3000BC?
Many of the tools and methods used today are the culmination of hundreds of steps and processes.
I can't see the technological advancement of that age being sufficient.

in reply to Partisan Night Slut • • •I think there is a lot of evidence for there being advanced stone mason civilizations around 13,000 years ago at the end of the Younger Dryas. There may have been advanced meta age civilizations prior, but I think most evidence of that went with the cataclysm.
Egypt is super weird. People like to discredit the people who claim there's massive structures under Giza, but that group has done the same imaging on several modern underground structures, so the technology is likely sound.
My schizo-theory: the reason world leaders want to cool the earth and have made up all this climate change bullshit is that the technology in the Pyramids and other ancient structures depends on the Earth being much colder to work.
