About once a month I am struck by how useful the way we categorize political beliefs is to the people in power, and how damaging it is to political discourse otherwise.
Are you right wing? Wait - conservative? Or are you a liberal? Are you a "leftist" - or is that a liberal? Are centrists liberals? Or are they right wing? Or conservative?
Your answer may determine what other people assume you want, based on their *own* biases, no matter what else you tell them explicitly.
*Any time* language has been manipulated to the point where it ceases to have clarity of meaning, you can find powerful people behind the manipulation.
That's because *they* hold the reigns of our media establishment, and can define and redefine words as they choose - especially if those words have already been shaken loose from any common meaning.
This is most obvious in the "liberal" or "left" debacle that routinely bamboozles otherwise smart people, but has been used for decades to conflate "conservative" and "far right" as well.
Other examples include things like "terrorist" and "criminal", which are so flagrantly used as to have no real meaning beyond "bad because we said so".
You can see it with the political class' selective use of "protester" and "rioter", as though these two words have no substantive difference in meaning.
🇬🇧 English version

I used this argument: "-f bv*[ext=mp4]+ba[ext=m4a]/b[ext=mp4]"
and it works: it downloads the best available video, audio and ffmpeg merges both in a single file. Automatically.
Except that the maximum resolution I need is 1920 x 1080 p. Best available video is oftentimes 4096 x 2160 p, too much for the target hardware.
Using -F to check different resolutions to then select one (like -f 299 or -f 148) is tiresome.
How do I do that? Ideally for whole playlists involving between 25 and 50 videos.
Taken from github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp. Replace 480 with 1080. Multiple options in the documentation to choose from.
Download the best video available with the largest height but no better than 480p, or the best video with the smallest resolution if there is no video under 480p
$ yt-dlp -S "height:480"

The following numeric meta fields can be used with comparisons <, <=, >, >=, = (equals), != (not equals):filesize: The number of bytes, if known in advance
filesize_approx: An estimate for the number of bytes
width: Width of the video, if known
height: Height of the video, if known
aspect_ratio: Aspect ratio of the video, if known
So a height<=1080 should be it.

2. discount on public transport tickets
3. the friends you make when discussing latest assignment at the watercooler
4. the discussions about wildly speculative things that feel just barely possible (without any pressure to actually implement them)
5. the ability to work on one task for a whole week, get dopamine when your code passes tests / gets max score, and then work on sth completely different the next week
Yeah, you would at least have to negotiate with a friend inside of the university to be able to join in the context of a specific project. Maybe make a donation to the univ that pays for the materials for the project or something. But then again, those are materials you were going to buy anyway.
Maybe if you built the reactor to the point where you can heat and flow inert salt then you could convince the univ to take on the project, move the reactor to their research lab, and switch to using FUN SALT.

Over the past five days alone, more than 550 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to ministry of health figures. The confirmed death toll since the beginning of the war crossed 59,000 on Monday in what is widely acknowledged to be a vast undercount. Over the past two months, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed as they are forced to seek aid in militarized zones in a system mostly overseen by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a shadowy U.S.- and Israeli-backed group. One of the deadliest days for aid seekers came on Sunday, when over 70 people were killed, at least 67 of them in northern Gaza where Israeli troops opened fire on crowds trying to get food from a World Food Program convoy entering through the Zikim crossing.
“The tank came, surrounded us, and started shooting at us and we kept raising our hands,” Ibrahim Hamada, who was wounded in the leg, told Drop Site as he lay on a hospital gurney wincing in pain. “There were many martyrs, no one was able to retrieve them. I crawled on my stomach just to reach a car to take me to the hospital,” he said. “I went there to eat, because there was no food at home.”

Selling the Public Lands
[quote][Senator Mike Lee has been making waves recently with his support of new potential legislation that would mandate sale of a small amount of land which is currently owned and managed by the federal government. The idea behind the proposal is to free up space for housing development in states where the federal government currently owns large shares of the land. In Senator Lee’s words, “...turning federal liabilities into taxpayer value.”
The appeals made in support of this proposed legislation correctly identify a number of key issues. For one, it is obviously true that any federally-owned land which currently serves no productive purpose would be transformed from a liability into an economic asset if its sale were to result in new productivity. It is also true that the housing market in the Western part of the country could benefit from freeing up some of the government-owned land for development. Utah—Senator Lee’s home state—has seen a continual and substantial increase in housing prices over several decades. There is little doubt that this rise in price is to some degree a result of the fact that roughly 68 percent of Utah’s land is owned by the federal government, preventing its utilization in the meeting of demand for housing in the state./quote]
Some in Congress are floating the idea of selling government land—especially in the West—as a way to pay down federal debt and free more land for housing. WhileRyan Wardle (Mises Institute)

The Gaza Genocide is worse than the Nazi Holocaust.
The Nazi Holocaust was committed in the dark, and most of humanity did not see it or know about it in real time. The Gaza Genocide is broadcast live for the whole world to see. It is an open challenge to human morality, the likes of which we have never met before as a species - at least not since the ideas of morality and humanity were conceived.
