Let's start with Activities, something KDE never really talks about or promotes in any way.

An Activity is a group of virtual desktops. You can switch activities easily with a keyboard shortcut, and they have their own switcher tool. Each activity can have its own name, wallpaper, set of plasma widgets, and virtual desktops.

WHich means you can create a work activity, with a certain set of widgets that let you work more easily, and a less distracting wallpaper, and a personal activity, where you can have all the anime characters you want as a background, different widgets, and even different apps running.

Now let's talk Kwin, the window manager / compositor. You can extend it, thanks to custom Kwin scripts. It can force background blur on certain windows, have sticky window snapping, so you can resize 2 adjacent windows in one go, there's Krohnkite, a script that turns Kwin into a full blown tiling window manager, you can maximize new windows to a new virtual desktop, like on mac OS, or shake a window to minimize all others.

By default, KDE Plasma also has KDE Connect, a wonderful tool that lets you basically replicate what apple does with their iOS and macOS devices: install the companion app on your Android phone, or iPhone, and pair the 2.

And that's just a few things most KDE users probably never even knew existed. There are tons more, like Krunner. Press Alt + space, and you get a full on search box. You can have an application launcher as a right click on the desktop, instead of a context menu. You can apply a whole theme in just one click from the appearance tab. You can replace any plasma widget by another through the "show alternatives" menu item. You can replicate any desktop from any other operating system.

Thing is, no one ever told KDE users they could do that, and that's the main problem with KDE.

Fortunately, KDE devs seem to have understood that problem, because they're already working on a Welcome application: invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-w…

But that doesn't solve our power problem: it only addresses the basics everyone already knows they'll be able to do in any OS. It doesn't tell people about what they can do specifically on KDE.

The welcome app should offer predefined layouts to let people know that this is a capability they have. Or, even better, have a "+" button to let someone create their own layout.

The Welcome app should probably also be the entry point for themes. KDE has a few out of the box, just as a dark or light mode, or midnight mode, but you could also use that opportunity to tell people about the "Get new stuff" buttons that permeate all the customization throughout the desktop.

DIsplay these default all in one themes, and a very visible "get more themes" button right from the start.

The Welcome app is also the perfect entry point to talk about KDE Connect.

For activities, there's a simple path as well. When a user enters the settings for Activities, or maybe uses virtual desktops for a while, you can just prompt them with a small notification, easily dismissed, or just a simple banner in the settings that might be related to virtual desktops.

Same goes for all Kwin scripts and all extensions: instead of hiding the kwin scripts in their own settings page, you could also make them more visible in the default window options.

People exploding this false messaging that I voted for a bill + funding that I quite literally voted NO on. The threat environment this morning is scary.

Doesn’t help anyone. Drag me for the position if you disagree but don’t lie. It’s out of control. Saying I voted for this funding is false.

I don't really understand why Westerners consistently lie about China and push fake narratives about the non-existent "social credit score". I don't know what utility it holds nor what it's trying to accomplish…… Maybe domestic propaganda to make citizens feel happier or be more tolerant of their deteriorating conditions at home? Foster sentiments of "well, regardless of the status quo, at least we don't have a 'social credit score' like they do in China!"?

This stuff obviously only works on people who are uneducated or ignorant considering if one was able to read Chinese one could just read the signs and text on images like that attached and immediately know what it was saying vs. trusting some blue-check-mark's narrative on X. This type of propaganda neither works on, nor is targeted towards, Chinese-speakers or people who otherwise know better……

>微信信用分享先充后付

This is basically advertising a WeChat credit feature where users can pay later. So, literally just credit. Like a credit card. Buy now, pay it later.

A quick search online provides the clear answer:

>只要车主的支付分在550分及以上,就能优先享受“先充电、后付费”的服务,不用再提前充值或缴费,整个充电过程更为便捷、高效
>As long as the car owner's payment score is 550 points or above, he can enjoy the "charge first, pay later" service first, without having to recharge or pay in advance, and the entire charging process is more convenient and efficient.

Essentially, this advertisement is saying that on a lot of electric vehicle charging stations users need to pre-pay a set amount either directly or on an account plan: If a user has his/her vehicle plugged in and charging, but the user's balance paid hits zero, then the charging ceases and the user shows up to a car without a fully charged battery---something the user probably wasn't expecting nor wanting. But, if one has a credit score of 550 or higher, one can just pay with WeChat and WeChat will cover the expenses on one's behalf and one just needs to pay WeChat back for however much was charged. Just as if one was putting any ordinary charge on credit.

>先充后付
>Charge first and pay later

It'd be very clear and banal to anyone on 抖音 what this video was advertising. But, of course, someone who doesn't speak nor read 中文 would have no clue! So, Western bad-actors can take clips like this, append to it a fake narrative, and use it to maliciously disseminate falsehoods. I still don't fully understand the "pay off", though.

in reply to 👺кину奇诺[流浪者]👹

because Western capital needs to push the idea that socialism = "evil big government" to its own citizens.

It's not meant to enlighten Chinese speakers to a truth about China, it's meant to hide the truth about China and socialism in general from non-Chinese-speakers.

And it is not the only piece, it is part of a wider narrative sold to citizens of the imperial core from birth about the PRC, DPRK, USSR, and all other socialist countries to prevent them from reaching class consciousness.

Imagine: a night spent on the cold floor of a subway station. Nearby — small children, scared, not fully understanding why they’re not sleeping in their warm beds at home.

Because life doesn’t stop.
We have to live. We have to work. We have to hold on.

GNOME Dconf video:

Device manager lets you see all the components of your PC, and the devices plugged into it. It lets you check for drivers, fix various problems, set some options, and view some logs related to your devices.

On Linux, this thing has no equivalent. We do have a third party app called HardInfo, but it's not an actionable application. In KDE, you have the same thing, with the Info Center.

Device manager is an important tool on Windows, and it would have a LOT of uses on Linux as well. I wish we had something like that.

Linux runs services in the background, for printing, bluetooth, network, virtualization, the graphical server or compositor, and a lot more things, generally managed by systemd on most distros.

And almost no Linux desktop has a complete graphical user interface to manage these services, turn them on or off, enable one at startup or not, or view logs related to this service.

On GNOME, you have an extension called systemd-manager, but no way to configure them, or select options, or enable autostart. On KDE, you have a services page in the settings, but you can basically just start and stop them, no other action is available.

As far as I know, only OpenSUSE has a decent services manager, that is baked into YAST, their configuration tool.

On Windows, the services app might look like it's 20 years old, which it probably is, but it lets you start and stop services, select if you want to start them manually, or at boot, or completely disable them, and it lets you set policies for various services failures, like restarting the computer, restarting the service, or opening another program.

Another thing that is not entirely available in our desktop environments is a graphical tool to configure the firewall, and general system security.

KDE has a config module in their settings, so that's handled. And yet again, OpenSUSE has a firewall config tool in Yast, which works really well.

For GNOME, there are third party tools you can install, depending on the firewall the distro uses, like firewall-config for firewalld, but these are rarely provided by default.

Linux desktops also don't really have an equivalent to the Windows "security center". GNOME has the basics of such an implementation, with their device security page, but it's not actionable.

Anyway, we could add here some information depending on certain libraries, apps, and kernels we use, if vulnerabilities have been detected, we could have access to the firewall settings, apps that have incorrect permission...

And then we have backups. A lot of distros ships with a third party backup tool, like Déja Dup, or Timeshift, but they generally only ship one or the other. We sort of need a complete solution that works ideally for both.

What I'd want is to right click on a file in my file manager, and have a "versions" menu item. What I'd like is a system settings option, native to the desktop environment, that lets me configure a backup, and restore it.

The windows registry is a horrible, horrible thing. It's illegible, it's super messy, modifications can result in a horrendously broken system, and generally it's better left alone.
But it does surface a LOT of options for applications and the system. And not all Linux desktops have an equivalent.

GNOME has dconf, which has a lot of various settings you can tweak. KDE doesn't have that.
Yast has a bunch of additional configurations available graphically.

The Hierarchical Reasoning Model is a brain-inspired architecture with two recurrent modules: a slow, high-level planner and a fast, low-level one for computation. With only 27M parameters and ~1000 training examples, it excels at complex reasoning without pre-training or Chain-of-Thought.

HRM significantly outperforms larger models in benchmarks and solves complex Sudoku and mazes where CoT methods completely fail.
