Actually I think it's better. The reason is because the amount that you drive every week or month or so is arguably fixed, and L/100k directly converts that into liters which is a proxy for cost.

Why that's important is because MPG can give you misleading intuition. For example: Lets say you're buying a car and a truck, you will drive both roughly equally, you could spend a little extra on a 40 MPG car rather than a 35 MPG car, or you could use that money instead to spend a little extra on an 11 MPG truck rather than a 10 MPG truck. Which one should you choose?

It's not immediately obvious and can't solve it in your head...

But here are the conversions:
11 MPG = 21.38 L/100k
10 MPG = 23.52 L/100k
40 MPG = 5.88 L/100k
35 MPG = 6.72 L/100k

So the 1 MPG between 10 and 11 is worth 2.14 L/100k, but the 5 MPG between 35 and 40 is only worth 0.84 L/100k. Investing extra in the truck is the better choice, and L/100k easily tells you that but MPG doesn't.

Can our leaders provide some kind of explanation as to why nothing can be done to stop the genocide in #gaza ? The absence of an explanation that could be understood (I say understood, not accepted or acceptable) by the majority of reasonable people is one of the aspects of this that erodes trust in leaders and institutions. Is the explanation that the Palestinians were sentenced to this in 1948 because the world powers just decided that would be OK?

With Sonoma, Apple grafted their iOS widget system to macOS. Of course, widgets are something we’ve enjoyed for a long while on KDE, starting with Plasma 4. But Apple’s implementation IS better in some regards.

Widgets can auto align if you want them to: dragging a widget close to another one you’ve already placed displays a white outline that will make the new widget snap in place, so everything looks tidy.

Something that is very, very difficult to do in KDE. Most widgets don’t have a similar aspect ratio, or size, and resizing them tends to be a finicky operation. On top of that, Apple offers multiple preset sizes for their widgets, and these can be changed on the fly. But these widgets are also a lot less functional than the ones we have on KDE.

They’re not really interactive: you can just click on them to open the related app. That’s it. No note taking straight in the notes widget, no clicking on a specific day in the weather widget. And there’s also no “user contributed widget directory”.

One new feature in MacOS Sonoma is a better autocorrect and predictive text system. Autocorrect can be a bit annoying on a computer, but the predictive text can be a game-changer, especially for those with disabilities.

On Linux, we have something called iBus typing booster, which does pretty much the same thing, but it is hidden in the input sources settings, and not an easy one click toggle. The way it works is also pretty distracting, as it displays a complete pop-up with word suggestions that flickers in and out of existence with each character you type.

MacOS Sonoma brings 2 main improvements for gaming: the first one is game mode, which does exactly the same thing as its Linux equivalent: it gives CPU priority to the game that's currently running, and also reduces latency for bluetooth controllers and bluetooth headphones, something that we DO NOT have on Linux, and that's been an issue for a lot of people.

The second thing is their game porting toolkit, which lets developers test their games on Apple Silicon macs. And this toolkit basically converts DirectX12 games into Metal Games thanks to a translation layer. It shares a lot of DNA with Proton, since it's based on Wine, and the same kind of translation DXVK does. Performance is no good yet, though.

Sonoma lets you set some animated screensavers, that represent a bunch of landscapes, cityscapes, even underwater scenes and Earth views. When you unlock your mac, this animation will seamlessly transition into your wallpaper.

On Linux, we do have animated wallpapers. Screensavers aren’t really a thing on Linux anymore, you can add them back.

Now in terms of OS compatibility, there's an important “feature” in MacOS Sonoma that we need to spotlight. Unlike Linux's broad compatibility, which supports a diverse range of devices of all ages, MacOS Sonoma adopts a more restrictive approach, narrowing down its compatibility to Macs manufactured from 2018 onwards.

Now, Safari can boast,of profiles to separate for example your work and personal browsing. They also now support web apps that can be pinned to your dock.. A bunch of web browsers on Linux can do that already.

FaceTime now lets you overlay yourself on top of the slides or screen that you’re sharing with others. This already exists as “presenter mode” on Microsoft Teams, which is available on Linux as well. And of course, as long as Facetime doesn’t have an app for Windows, no one will use it in a professional context, so what’s the point?

@cjd i plan to carefully improve the surfaces. the top surface might have to be carefully sanded and then a new layer of shellack on it.

I see some other spots, i'll ask people that know what they are doing there first.

Some hardware needs replacing. The right rear foot has broken off - its a clean break though and i have the broken off foot.

Besides that ... i want to have it stand there and give me some time and thinking and then ... lets see.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

@cjd no. Not with a consumer grade 3 axis machine. Not by a long shot. To get anywhere close you need a five axis mill, and at that point your shape file requires a lot more work than drawing in 2D and adding a depth to it.

And you'd still get all sorts of ugly tear-out and artefacts because a carving blade doesn't move at a thousand ripms. It's an artform. And chip carving is very simple and low barrier to entry. Piece of wood and a short, stiff, straight blade. And some time.

This entry was edited (1 month ago)
in reply to PalmAndNeedle

Hmm indeed. My thought was not so much to fool people into thinking it was hand carved, but more to easily make something with a really pleasant aesthetic. I imagine probably:
1. The type of wood matters a lot
2. There are some shapes you can't do (e.g. sharp cracks)
3. Choice of tools and speeds matters a lot as well

I imagine probably some dremel tooling would do finishing passes pretty well.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

@cjd That's kinda my point: it is surprisingly easy to do basic woodcarving. And very accessible. Whereas getting the machinery, tooling and process dialed in to approximate it is very much not. And the result will always be inferior, in my book at least.

* The physics of how router bits cut is inferior to a slow slicing knife
* The end result is as close to interchangable with any other panel you ran with the same pattern

This entry was edited (1 month ago)
in reply to PalmAndNeedle

Well, it might be approachable, but I'm not that motivated to become any good at it. There are lots of activities like gardening, hiking, reading a book, and of course wood carving, which are great things to do, but they're not *my* favorite because I just more enjoy doing things which have some potential to add to the body of human knowledge.

I know that's going to sound pretentious as hell, and let me assure you that I don't consider myself to be of any historical significance whatsoever. Also, I never think of my leisure activities as being to some kind of professional standard... the goal isn't to work, it's to have fun.

But the selection of things I like to do is those which have the theoretical potential to somehow contribute something. Even my worthless commentary here on the Fedi is something that could potentially get scraped up by an AI, which gets copied into a better AI, and then a better one, and eventually ends up being a couple of bits of weights in some future global super-intelligence, thereby adding one quadrillionth* of one percent to the history of human progress.

So for me, I more enjoy the idea of futzing around with CNC machines and publishing my bad designs in little git repos.

*It's probably a bigger denominator, but I don't know any larger numbers than that.

Good morning all
I returned to Texas last night. The service for mom went great. I don't for one second regret returning to VA to honor her memory. Many of mom's prayer fellowship were there, plus old family friends, and her sister was able to come. It was not a funeral; my mom didn't want that. It was a memorial tribute to her and it was mostly an acknowledgement of a life well- lived.

We live-streamed it. I sent the link to everyone invited. My brother never even opened the email.

in reply to MMA 🇺🇸💄

So, that's that. I did my duty to tell him.

The hospice chaplain attended via the link and he messaged me that it was a great service. He told me I did the right thing by going back to the DMV to have it there.

I'll bet my brother never does his own service for her. Even small ones take planning, effort AND money. He never did any of those with mom.

The church was too small to have a luncheon so instead, I gave all attendees a purple gift bag that I filled with mom's favorite foods.

in reply to MMA 🇺🇸💄

The bag contained
A foil- lined sandwich bag with 2 fried chicken wings
Mini bottles of hot sauce
A container of pasta salad with grilled vegetables and poppy-seed dressing
A bag of Utz Crab(Old Bay- flavored) potato chips
A can of Coke
A slice of white chocolate mousse cake from Stella's Bakery
A handful of Tootsie Rolls
Two gold forks
A gift tag with mom's picture.

I was happy with the service. At first, not having a luncheon bothered me but it turned out to be better. Everyone was tired.

in reply to MMA 🇺🇸💄

The guests were mostly older folks who battled over two hours of terrible traffic to get there. They needed to get back and have a rest and I was pretty much at my end, too. I had to make the gift bags, design a program, pick the songs for the service, write a biography and a tribute to my mom, order flowers, and make a tribute video in less than 2 weeks. I was plumb tuckered, as they used to say.

Thank God for good friends. They chipped in time to help me make everything and extra $$.

in reply to MMA 🇺🇸💄

I gained five pounds and felt like a VIP with all the invitations to breakfast, lunch and dinner. I think we were taken out to eat like fifteen times!

We had Mike's American grill 2x, Coastal Flats 2x, Artie's, breakfast (First Watch & Metro 29 Diner) fish and chips, had Ledo's pizza a few times, and of course we went to Stella's.

I tried to bring home a small mousse cake with us but somehow the melted ice seeped into the carefully wrapped plastic bag and saturated it. Epic fail.

I hate that my mom's not with us any longer for ME, not for her. Mom is fine now having the time of her life and enjoying perfect health. But it's a big adjustment for us.

Even though I have more time on my hands, and my anxiety level has dropped considerably, I'd rather have my mom here. But like she was before the strokes, NOT like these final years. It was a very long decline and I'm happy she's no longer suffering.

I will now be able to visit friends in VA more often, and I will.

in reply to MMA 🇺🇸💄

Just now read this -- I've been out-to-lunch for a few days (or maybe just plain out-of-it??)

Your tribute to your mom sounds like a sweet success, just like she would wish for. So glad it went well. And as for your brother, you did indeed do the best that anyone could do while keeping proper boundaries. Well done!

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers as you process this huge life change. ❤ ❤

in reply to Regular 🇩🇪

I agree.

Industrial meat farming is dirty and unhealthy in many ways.

It would be great to know where my meat comes from. One of these days I'll be able to afford buying a half cow at a time straight from the farmer.

That's what my dad and brother-in-law do with bison. They split a half bison a couple of times a year directly from a rancher. You have to have a big freezer, and the upfront cost is high, but it's a great way of doing things other than that.

We've arrived at the stage where our 'global leaders' are expressing their 'horror' about Israel's extermination of the people of #Gaza. The UK's foreign secretary says he's "sickened".

Call it the 'emotion stage'. What purpose does it have?

The emotion stage is meant to make those leaders seem less sociopathic to you. True, they've not used their power to stop Israel. And you know it. And they're still not doing that. But they want you to know that, nonetheless, 'they feel it too'.

The next stage will repeat the familiar: our 'global leaders' will get distracted again by the next row over alleged antisemitism. Perhaps it's an artist calling for Israel to be dismantled. Perhaps it's an aid-worker saying that this is just as bad as Auschwitz.

And all the time, nothing will happen. I'll predict that for you. As long as you keep waiting for your 'horrified global leaders' to do the right thing, the people still alive in Gaza will continue to starve and will continue to be torn apart by bombs.

Don't wait for those 'leaders' to do the right thing. Continuing to sit on their hands must be made simply too costly. You must help inflate the personal cost, the political cost, and the economic cost of supporting a #genocide. Inflate it until it hurts them. Only then will something happen.

It's always funny when I guy says he wished he had a girlfriend in high school just to get hit with "Whem, young love is actually cringe and not worth it, chud," because what he's actually saying is that he wishes he had had sex with high school girls (which is legal) when it was both legal and socially accepted for him to do so.

I also have verbal proof now that they are talking negatively about me. That’s what I expected.

They banned smoking and I had to do some work outside and saw cigarette trash outside, next to the container for flammable paints and shit.
I snitched. But before doing that I went around and talked to people who I know smoke that I am going to snitch because it’s flammable shit. They all seemed fine with it.

The woman went around talking how “you don’t do that” trying to get people hating me.

So, let's look at the laptop, the Tuxedo Infinitybook pro 16, generation 8. It's 16 inches, 2560x1600, 16:10, at 240hz. It uses an Intel i7 13700H, with 32gigs of DDR5 RAM at 4800mhz, an nvidia RTX 4060 with 8 gigs of vRAM, a 500 gigs SSD (Samsung 980 Pro, PCIe4)

There's an SD card reader, a USB C port with displayport, plugged into the nvidia GPU, 1 thunderbolt 4, linked to the integrated intel GPU with power delivery, plus 2 USB A ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a headphone jack.

It embarks an 80 Wh battery, which gives me about 8h of battery life when using it to write scripts using wifi, and about 3 and half hours of video editing. I run this laptop using Tuxedo OS, the default distro Tuxedo installs on their devices.

I created a laptop power profile, it drops the brightness to 35%, and it's limited to 4 logical cores, at 1.4 Ghz. It might seem low, but it's the sweet spot for what I do. I created a KDE activity for this mode, in which I have a nice colorful wallpaper, and the widgets I need when I'm writing scripts.

The first one is the weather, the second one is a sticky note. I also have a disk usage monitor, and a tracker for my Nextcloud instance and my podcast, just showing me if they're currently working OK.

Which leads me to the editing setup. I created another power profile in Tuxedo Control center, called "editing". This one cranks everything up to the max: the CPU cores, the max clock speeds, the display brightness... I use a USB C dock, namely, the steam deck dock here, to which I gave a haircut so the little rubber adapter would fit well into the laptop even when closed.

Through it, I have Ethernet, plus an HDMI cable to the display, & the various USB peripherals, some of them using a USB hub.

And in terms of the KDE setup for editing, I have a dedicated activity. It's titled "editing", and it has a black and white wallpaper, plus some performance monitors: one for the CPU, one for the RAM, one for the disk space, and one for the Nvidia GPU VRAM.

I also have a folder view widget to display the contents of my video folder, so I can get quick access. This is all complimented by my plasma panel, which has that show desktop button at the bottom left, so I can quickly peek at these sensors. I have a Places widget, a centered task bar, because on a ultrawide display you don't want these stuck all the way to the left, and then to the right the notifications, the clock, and a user applet to log out and restart the computer.

I don't use a menu: I just mapped Krunner to use the super key, and I start everything using Krunner instead.

The taskbar isn't the best here, as it can't use intellihide: I'd like it to be always visible except when a window covers it, but all it can do is "windows can cover", which isn't exactly the same thing, as it sometimes doesn't pop back up, and sometimes you get this weird half masked taskbar as well.

Use KDE file picker in Firefox: go to about:config, and set widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal=1 instead of 2.

I'm happy to report it's actually faster than my desktop. It's probably a combination of the faster RAM, newer generation Nvidia GPU, way faster CPU, and faster PCIe4 storage, but all in all, thumbnails in the timeline are generated extremely fast, Resolve never struggles to load any clip and preview it, and rendering takes less time as well.

The total war Warhammer 3 benchmark gave me 60FPS at medium settings and the native resolution of my ultrawide, which is better performance than what I got on my editing PC.

Darktide got a stable 60FPS at the native resolution of the display, with medium graphics, with DLSS on balanced.

They are waiting for us on the balcony

July 23 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the political assassination of the anarchist comrade Christoforos Marinos by EKAM by government order. The extrajudicial executions of social activists, by government decisions during the current political regime, aimed to secure it in the face of the danger of the emergence of an open subversive movement. The murder of Marinos took place in order to lock in the anarchist movement the political results that the assassination of Michalis Prekas (October 7, 1987) had produced, the internalization of military terrorism and the separation from the subversive struggle.

Comrade Christoforos was by Michalis’ side in his last battle. Preka’s exit to a balcony with the guns held high, the impetuous meeting with the firing squad, instead of negotiating a surrender, constituted a steel political message, a call that would reverberate until the death of the state and capital: the irreversible historical passage to the unyielding revolutionary struggle. As a prisoner, the killers of Marinos’ partner manipulated him to consolidate their terrorist order. His close friends were sold out in tactics. Those who understood what was at stake politically, moved backwards from the passage that was opened with the exit of Kalogreza. The others found an opportunity to cannibalize those targeted by the state in order to bury everything that had a reference to the subversive struggle. Marinos himself revived the passage. When it was kidnapped in Bulgaria, it overthrew the rule of its torturers. It has taken to the streets again on all social fronts. It embraced the younger fighters like no other. It was rearmed. It confronted internalized terrorism and its political products and finally cleared the passage from hypocritical relativisms. Since then, everyone has come to know that the two worlds are irreconcilable: In front of the passage is the revolution that springs up fighting and bleeding. Behind the mockery of rotting culture.

On July 11, 1978, doctor Tsironis was also murdered. On a balcony and this unyielding revolutionary, with a gun in his hand and the people in his heart. These balconies are the door to our home.

The crossing has been kept open until today. Anarchy flourished on the free side of history. But the passage stands there for every now, not for the reminiscence of the fragrance of past flowers. In these three decades the tyrants have departed, the seas and the earth have turned red like fire, the chains have become unbearable, one on top of the other they have shaded the sky. The nation of bosses is at war, more work is needed and the human surplus is in the landfill. The masses wake up, naked they regress back and forth. The predatory opportunists of the left and the right make the nakedness of the masses a new political surplus.

In a neighborhood today, on the platform of the Propylaea and in Paris, London, Berlin tomorrow, the balcony of the doctor, Michalis and Christoforos, they eagerly await the embrace of an armed forest. The screams of history will set the pace along the way. Release the comrades from the balcony guard. They will leave a banner on the railing, written on the foot with their stone patience, a note for the latecomers: “I MOVE AGAIN”.

Willem the Captain

I saw Willem last week among the workers of the United Farmer Workers of America, outside a farm, facing the prison guards of the American colony. He took the place of a brother who was to testify under the boots of ICE. Four days ago, on July 19, on the anniversary of his attack on an immigrant prison in Washington, D.C., he sent me a message. He rigged a ship in Barbaria. He took his Cretan rifle and has set fire to the yachts and the cruises, the five-star shacks and the clubs in the Greek brothel of the imperialists and their Zionist gendarmes. Chapter is the common sun, the water of the dispossessed, the sand of the Athenian desert, the bloody salt of the Mediterranean, the sweat of the workers who are called upon not to raise their heads so as not to be slaughtered like the barbarians of the South. Harmful flows from the looted places invade the brothel. They spoil the harmony of European capitalism in Christ. Yes, Captain! Rules from Gavdos to the North Pole, not to stay swimming from the two-millennial Roman Empire. Let’s bring my bright captain.
