Urgency to Switch from Windows 10 Builds

The openSUSE Project is part of a growing coalition of open-source advocates urging Microsoft users to install a Linux operating system as Microsoft prepares to end support for Windows 10 this October, and urgency to get that message out is building.

Some in the IT industry are suggesting that as many as 50 percent of the devices remain using Windows 10, which comes at great risk to users and businesses.

Those who remain on Windows 10 and don’t upgrade to an operating system providing security and maintenance updates like a Linux OS or Window 11 will be susceptible to vulnerabilities, malware infections, software incompatibilities, and an increasing amount of system instability and failures over time.

The End of 10 campaign and its initiative aims to promote migration-focused type events to help these users shift from Windows 10 to Linux-based operating systems.

The amount of PCs that will become unprotected on October 14 is unprecedented, and getting people to migrate to Linux operating systems like openSUSE’s is reaching a critical juncture as millions face the looming deadline this Fall.

October 14 is just 12 weeks away and the end-of-support deadline for Windows 10 will expose those who have not migrated to increasing cyber threats.

In additions to the the threats, a big part of the End of 10 movement emphasizes environmental responsibility, digital sustainability and long-term cost savings for those with aging computers that could potentially end up recycled or in landfill.

End of 10 advocates and supporting organizations like NextCloud, REPAIR CAFE, KDE, GNOME, FSFE, EU OS and several other organizations would prefer users find a Linux solution for their older hardware rather than have this event create an environmental disaster. Installing Linux on these old systems can breathe new life into perfectly functional machines that may otherwise be discarded.

Several open-source software projects and organizations and been collaborating for more than a year to create unified resources, tutorials, migration tools and support channels to help lower the barrier to entry for those who seek to install a Linux new operating system.

Members of the openSUSE community and others have been vocal about appealing to Windows 10 users that can’t upgrade their devices to Windows 11.

For those ready to act, the campaign website has resources available and links to community events to help people install Linux.

Anyone who wants to install an openSUSE distribution can follow this A Step-by-Step Guide.

The message to Windows 10 users is clear; don’t replace your computer; reimagine it!

I've had three enshittification experiences already today. One of them took a while to sort out and almost bricked my phone. I was just about to moan at you about it, then realised: there's enough negativity already. The world doesn't need my minor-in-the-scheme-of-things cranky complaint. So instead I'm going to log off all things digital and go touch grass. Or bricks. Actual nice ones, like these ones I saw recently.

Olga #Bazova, journaliste russe :

Comment vont-elles pouvoir l’imputer à Poutine?
Grattage de têtes 😅

WashPost Complains Trump Admin Ignoring 1 in 3 Court Orders

Germany’s federal government is preparing massive cuts to social welfare benefits, pensions and healthcare starting in the autumn. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this clear last Friday at his summer press conference.

If I could ask powerful world leaders a question and get an honest answer the question that interests me the most is "How do you see the future of your country? Who is a part of it? How are they a part of it?"

In the US Republicans are peddling a vision of a white, English-speaking, Christian America. A nation with very few or no non-citizen residents.

America is currently a largely white, overwhelmingly Christian nation with a significant population of non-citizen residents.

11 million people out of 326 million people, who live in the US, aren't citizens and will never be citizens (unless we change something.)

They are here because US companies can pay them lower wages. A non-citizen is less likely to complain. Not because "Americans won't do those jobs."

I hate when people say that. These people are essentially Americans. How can we make *that* argument while also saying they are somehow mysteriously able to do exhausting, work for low wages?

From most Democrats the "vision of the future" is murky, but amounts to "just leave things as they are" far too often.

I think we should be a diverse nation, as we have always been. A nation that both assimilates and is changed by the people who live here.

I don't think we should have a significant portion of the population who lives here indefinitely but will never really be a part of America.

It's OK to visit, but if you live here we need your help with running the government.

3/

in reply to myrmepropagandist

The Republican project to eliminate undocumented Americans is either a fake out: that is, we will look around in 10 years and there will still be millions of undocumented people working in the shadows with no path to citizenship.

OR it's the same kind of eliminationism that leads to some of the worse crimes in history.

I want to hear someone say NO. There should be a path to citizenship. Requirements should be reasonable. Become a part of America if you want to stay.

4/

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I think a lot of people would agree with "Become a part of America if you want to stay."

A friend of mine works in roofing. He's been doing the job for 20 years which is amazing because it's a very dangerous job. From time to time I've had to talk him down from supporting Republicans because he sees directly how his wages are lower, his job is less safe because most of the other people doing the same job are here illegally.

It's easy to blame immigrants for "not following the law"

5/

in reply to myrmepropagandist

Blaming immigrants for "not following the law" is also BS because the US laws have been contradictory. They way the laws are enforced ranges from random to incomprehensible.

This is obviously because there are business owners who want to hire people for lower wages, but don't care about them beyond that. We can all see this happening.

There have even been attempts to make government programs to codify this arrangement.

Things like "guest worker" programs that let people work in the US in agriculture for two years but then they need to return to their home country for a time before they can return to do two more years. Basically an exception just so farm owners can get their field workers without those workers ever becoming a part of the country.

Just keeping a thumb on people pressing them down.

7/

in reply to myrmepropagandist

When I was a kid, my dad complained up and down about other farmers and other roofing contractors (he was both) and their immigrant workforces. He complained both about the immigrants and the people who hired them. He also loved to complain about OSHA.

Then he would make his own kids work for him, pay us a pittance, and put us in horrifically dangerous working conditions. He loved the farm loopholes in employment law that let you make slaves out of your kids.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

100% this.

…I tried just now to compose sentences in agreement with your point, but all my attempts to put into clear, concrete language the implications are so horrifying and depressing that even thinking them makes me nauseous. I can’t write such nihilistic things before breakfast, I just can’t.

Never again IS now. _Here_ and now.

And it didn’t have to be this way.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

Thing is, The Netherlands is the same. Temporary workers from out of the EU-region, allowed to work their shifts on the fields, which have highest amounts of pesticides and poison.
Out when season is finished. In some industry a fence runs through the complex. The temps and the fewer fixed contracts can not have contact with each other. And talk about ¨things¨.
Germany, max. 2 hr drive from anywhere in NL has laws for that. Fix and temp have same wages and protection.

Big Oil famously coined the idea of the ‘carbon footprint’ so that we'd be too busy blaming each other to take collective action against them. I'm starting to suspect that Big Tech has manipulated us into the same trick. Every time somebody switches to a recommended non-Big Tech alternative, someone will immediately tell them why the recommended alternative is evil too now, actually. Or if we moan about a new enshittified experience, it's our own fault for using the wrong non-Big Tech solution.

Huh.. made an interesting discovery. Old YouTube streams (1-2 years old) that previously had a vp9 encoding (something I KNOW for certain, since I have downloads of those streams) now only have h264 encodings (verified with yt-dlp but also in browser). I guess they're trying to save disk space. Very interesting though.

My guess (how I'd do things), they probably have some cleaup utility, where if a video wasn't played for long enough, it will delete all encodings except what is needed for maximum compatibility.

Not the first time I tried to (re)download an old stream, but this is the first time I noticed codecs missing from YouTube's repertoire. Must be a cost cutting measure.

in reply to Alyx Hinata 🇹🇩🚫💀

I've noticed something similar with my lecture livestreams. I always waited for a day or two and then downloaded them, but at some point during the last two years or so they stopped getting vp9 reencodes for higher resolutions. It seems youtube figured that it's cheaper to serve the large files to the few dozen viewers than it is to spend extra compute reencoding and storing extra versions
in reply to matrix07012

@matrix I don't even blame tbh. I've ranted a few times about how stupidly wasteful they are with their reencodes, keeping around old options that barely anyone (if not outright no one) uses anymore. They should be cleaning house. But they probably still went for the wrong option.

Can't imagine them having any significant amount of users whose devices can't play vp9. I really think they should ax h264 instead. Keep it only for livestreaming, since it works better for fast encoding/low latency, but switch to vp9 for long term offering.
