Intel MEI and AMD PSP should they be turned on in the kernel?
We decided on this upgrade of linux 5.15 ver 189 (25/7/17) to turn them off but the problem with them is they can work before the system even boots, some say if power is connected to the machine even when it was powered down, they can still work. They (experts) also say that AMD doesn\t/didn't use a network stack, so what it does is not communicating with "home" while INTEL mei is almost certain that it can. Intel chips and firmware have been designed and developed by Intel-Israel in Haifa for nearly 20? years now if this means anything to anyone. US gov high security machines get certified by factories those chips are disabled totally, but not everyone else's.
If oyu have faith and trust on those industries to "secure" your machine, like big daddy in the sky, go ahead and turn all kinds of telemetry on, MEI and PSP on in the kernel to make their "service" easier. In other words, build the kernel yourself. From now on, to be consistent all kernel rebuilds will have this turned off at the config.
Today you get 5.15.189 (jobcore/linux & linux-headers) with MEI and PSP crypto turned off.

I don't think there is anything related to AMD PSP in the kernel, there is amount Intel ME or MEI and related "telemetry". Neither of those can really be turned OFF because they are chips that work on their own, they operate before even efi or a bootloader executes, and have their own mini-os inside from what reasearchers can determine. Most likely they can even activate, run, and communicate as long as a powecord and ethernet cable or wifi is connected, even when the PC is off. There was some security research group in Israel years ago reported that there was a possibility of a backdoor through AMD's PSP and it was a high security risk. AMD admitted there was a possibility and released a patch for this, but disputed the high risk, and that group retracted its accusations as well. Intel r&d is in Israel, AMD is among the few that ISN'T!
On the other hand when both were cornered to provide the code for those chips AMD refused and kept the code as an internal secret, but declared that it can't be used to remotely obtain data from the system's users.
Do we trust either? We have no alternatives other than saying that machines that are over 12-13 years old are "safer" than new ones.
That crypto-psp flag on kernel config is about another chip producing cryptographic random codes so the system can provide more random cryptography keys. We may turn this back on, but intel mei and all telemetry flags will stay down.
Yes MEI was turned off on last linux6.6 as well.
If you check the source on disroot for config and run grep MEI config you can locate the appropriate flags switched to =n

I have seen claims/references that AMD's PSP does not have a network stack within its mini-OS, but no concrete evidence. It appears as those monitoring packets through networking don't see it being active, not that AMD certified that there is none. Searching for details like this is worse than a needle in a hay-stack ... the noise to signal ratio is enormous. I also tend to trust open discussions on topics more than articles/monologues.

joborun had some exposure on sf for a while where if you chose operating-system and ordered the list as most recently updated, joborun was constantly in the front page. I have a very good friend who’s company has recently gone AI first. There is a mandate to ask AI before they write new code. So they write prompts now and it is terrible. The code for this large organization is rapidly becoming brittle.
