It's actually hard to evaluate. I think the right choice is normal but I am still testing it out. It's a JRPG in fashion but practically speaking almost EVERY meaningful hit is a one shot if you let it land without doing the parry and the dodge. Now I have NOTHING bad to say about the timings here, they are almost totally the polar opposite of the modern Elden Souls deceptive timings, they are nuanced, expertly animated, and fun to read.
But at the same time it's just ONE mechanic and because it's dressed like a JRPG if you get one-tapped turn one it's an almost Souls-like runback even if the autosave was just 30 feet down the hall from the fight you got raped in. It's good enough to deserve being tight as hell, but it's actually meaty enough.
I just realized that I’ve spent something like 30 years masking the autistic desire to engage in comfort media. I only read a book or watch a show once because I feel like I’m weird (in a bad way) for watching the same, honestly kinda mid tv show over and over. (There are exceptions, but I have pointless, self imposed rules like “only once a year”)
I just finished a show for the second time recently. I have spent today in a funk because I want something else that scratches that exact itch but nothing does exactly that.
Except something does. It’s the show I just watched. I don’t actually want to watch something else, I want to rewatch the thing because I’m not done with it.
And it’s okay to do that. It doesn’t make me weird. At least, not in a bad way. And all I’m accomplishing by denying myself rewatching it is feeling sad and bored, while watching it makes me feel excited and energized.
So I’m gonna rewatch this show for the third time. And I’ll be happy I did. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Oh my god that’s why I like games with procedural generation and rougelites so much - because they feel like things I’m “allowed” to play over and over since that’s baked into the gameplay.
I'd like to do that too, but remembering a lot from the previous watch makes it even harder to focus on. And getting distracted by new things.
I especially enjoy rewatching a cartoon after ten or twenty years, seeing how incomplete my memory of it is, and that my understanding of it has changed. Also several movies that I watch again every several years.
It does not help that my methods of getting series to watch focus on random remakes and not the ones I know.
I don't get it, why is that unmasking? I thought it's normal to always rewatch the same movies over and over again alongside watching new ones. People even make Christmas rituals out of that and all that stuff
I relate to this so much. I mourn for the younger me who didnt understand that it IS OK to be autistic. That it is OK to have hyperfixations and re-engage with our favourite media over and over.
Learning how to not care about this is revolutionary
Sometimes I try not to, out of fear that a given piece of media will lose its sparkle if I watch it too many times, or I'll start noticing the flaws and then it won't scratch the itch anymore.
(Which unfortunately did happen with a lot of video games, if they didn't become unplayable for technical reasons.)
When I was a kid, there weren't many video games, movies or books that interested me. So I watched/read/played them multiple times and knew all their secrets inside out.
Nowadays I'm quite overwhelmed, because new interesting stuff keeps coming out, but I have no time to check them all. And I don't even have time to redo the ones I love the most.
I wish I could go into a dream world like they do in Inception, spend there 60 years and then return to this world and only couple of hours would've passed.
This is so me, I've read faves like Lord of the Rings and Ivanhoe over and over growing up and watched Crimson Tide (yeah yeah U.S. military propaganda, but in my defense: Denzel Washington in his prime, with Gene Hackman) 20+ times in my teens to early adulthood. When I was in early adulthood and rewatching/rereading that much seemed too weird, especially with the advent of the Web and the explosion of media I could access, I turned to fanfic and fan communities which somewhat scratched the itch of "keep experiencing this thing over and over." I also tend to replay favorite games at least several times, but then again gaming is a hobby that has "replay value" built into some quality metrics. Meanwhile my own child replays his favorite videos dozens of times, cumulatively probably into the hundreds and I love that for him :}

I have certain shows and movies that I rewatch basically all of the time. I think I'm on my fourth round through deep space nine now. I've seen the movie the big Lebowski over 300 times. Comfort media is important for me for self regulation. I don't always need to see new things, and I always see new things when I rewatch my shows and movies. There is no downside in my book!
