Well i just saw the remarkable 2. I liked how it workes at feels. But im concerned for the update abillity, like the software support, and the abillity to decide what data is send and so on. Im a noob for Linux, i use fedora on my laptop, and thats it. So yir Pinenote isnt for me,because im not that good in linux development. What is the linux community thoughts on the remarkable 2 (as far as i know, its based on Linux) or are there good alternatives out there? I want to use it for note taking and reading pdf..
I had a remarkable 2 for a year and was very dissatisfied with how hard it was to modify or run custom scripts or third party gui apps on it. Then came the subscription stuff and I ditched it.
Bought pinenote and even though I'm no linux developer, I've set it up and it works very well. Been using it for 3+ years now.
The build feels cheaper compared to remarkable, but the hardware spec is much better. And the best part is I can just run syncthing or kdeconnect or any linux desktop app on it and it's great.
I went with the supernote Manta and I love it. It is Android based, not Linux, and the ecosystem is really sparse. But you can easily side load F-Droid or the aurora store and that opens everything up. I have next cloud syncing my documents and moon reader giving me access to my calibre library.
It is first and foremost a note taker and drawing pad, sacrificing lights and color for writing feel. The writing feel is amazing though. No subscriptions, non replaceable pens, support for replaceable tip 3rd party pens.
It's cost is quite a bit more than remarkable 2 or the pinenote though.
In practice, it isn't trivial to use android as a computer like you would in a linux-based system, installing desktop apps and stuff. It's definitely doable, but although one of based on the other they are very different systems in day-to-day use.
We're talking about an eink tablet. I assume none of them are running X, so there's no "desktop" involved here. I have a remarkable 2 which runs Linux. I can ssh into it to rsync files to it, back things up, and make customizations. There's no package manager, it seems to be an embedded system. It has python, so i've written some python scripts to do custom operations. Everything i do on my remarkable 2 is stuff I would expect to also be able to do on an android based tablet.
Another vote for the Supernote. I've got the Nomad and I'm so far pretty happy with it. I use it mainly for note taking, for which it excels. It was pretty expensive to import it where I live, but its worth it.
I recently bought an XP Pen Magic Note Pad that I've been pretty happy with. It's sort of a hybrid tablet/notetaker that's going for a jack of all trades master of none vibe while still having an overall good writing experience and I think it succeeds at that
Pros: - bought for $200 refurbished on an eBay sale directly from XP Pen (I think it's $300 or so resfurbished normally) - runs an OS based on Android 14 so full play/aurora/F-Droid access easily - comes with a good pen, small folio case and notetaking app based on Jnotes - screen is matte with a slightly textured feel. Can switch between a full color, paper color and grayscale display mode with a single button. 90hz, palm rejection while writing is very good.
Cons - Came out this year but a little worried about continued OS support being a niche item - built in notetaking app is great except for the handwriting recognition. I bought Nebo for that which is a one time license of $8 which isn't bad at all and their handwriting recognition is like dark magic it's amazing - not a true e-ink, so battery life is more like a standard tablet. I'm usually getting 2-3 days of use wheras e-inks will give you weeks - not a true paper-like writing experience but better than an iPad out of the box - overall it's a mostly fine android tablet with a few tweaks aimed at the note-taking market
All in all I do really enjoy it, and for $200 including a pen, case and software it was hard to pass up. I've locked it down a bit but you're not going to get a totally degoogled experience. At $300 I would still consider it but probably wouldn't buy new. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I have the boox note air 4c, and it is really great for taking notes. It is kaliedo color, which is great for me but you can also get a black and white version which has better contrast. The notes app is all around pretty great, although it isn't well optimised for art of that's your thing. It also runs android so you can get a ton of functionality from installing apps onto it. I use localsend in particular to share files to and from the device, and obsidian for text-based notes.
I have one as well and love it. It reads like my paperwhite, writing is easy and comfortable and has a pretty decent handwriting to text ability. I've found marking up and/or signing PDFs to be a great bonus feature I didn't think about when I got it. Overall very happy with it and running Android, I can do pretty much everything I want with it.
I've found that all modern E-Ink tablets are trash. They're built cheaply and to fail after 2 years or less, regardless of premium model or not. I went through 4 devices of various models and manufacturers (Kobo, Kindle, Pocketbook) over <2 years, while I used my old Kindle 3 for >5 years and technically it still works. These days they all use the same wonky chipsets and flakey components especially for power management. 3 of those 4 devices just suddenly didn't turn on anymore one day.
Personally, I now read on my FP5 with the Android KOReader port, which due to the AMOLED screen has excellent contrast and sufficient battery life with white-on-black text. Maybe when we finally stop producing devices for land fills I'll take another look at E-Ink.
Hey. Thank you all for the answers. It made me see that there are more devices to get to know. Like one of you has written, some devices may be so niche, that support isnt going too stay long. And, what to do then? Is it another device that will be in the schelff? Im going to look more into Kobo, and Boox, at first. But yir its just easyer to have a device in the hand, and then make a choice 😀
One warning for Boox, although I definitely reccomend the device, the first-party support can be lackluster, so if you're in a country where BOOX is on Amazon I would reccomend buying through there since Amazon has a better returns service.
The Remarkable 2 is fantastic. You can ssh into it, and scp from it. There are some filesystem layout quirks, but it's good. Peerless writing experience. Great battery. Plenty storage. Large screen. No backlight, sadly. Good for

Not so good for reading for pleasure, like fiction. It's too big. It's best for active reading and writing.
I have a Kobo Aura H2O for recreational reading and travel. Massive memory and an SD expansion slot. Backlight. Pretty indestructible, I read it in the jacuzzi.

I owe a Boox Note Air. Had it for a while now. Overall very good tablet but it is expensive. Runs a custom Android skin which is fine since I run it offline most of the time. Perfect for reading and writing.
Based on linux is no guarantee for stable, secure or privacy respecting software. Android is based on Linux. 😀 And so is Remarkable, and some of the e-book readers.
I really like both the idea behind e-book readers and Remarkable, but they are often a very closed environment, so forget about most FOSS, if any. They want to make money on you, and that stops, if you use other software than theirs.
I definitely recommend it... but I also wouldn't dare predicting the future.
So far unofficial hacking on the reMarkable has been great. The Discord is very active, new development e.g. github.com/asivery/rm-appload (random pick from Discord) so that's the sign of a healthy tinkering environment.
Yet, reMarkable has never pushed for customization either. They also got VC funding in 2019 and 2022 but that seemed to have changed nothing on that front.
So... I highly doubt they would somehow break the ability to connect to ssh then install applications. They definitely can not even technically do that as long as one does not automatically update. Consequently I can safely say that if you get a reMarkable today, you will be able to do a lot with it.
All that being said, even though it's Linux proper, it's also a rather specialized environment with limited resources. If you do not love to tinker, make sure the application you actually need is already available and working on the right version you want (e.g. might work on rM2 but not on rM Pro).

oh thank you. Im going to think about it more. I thank you for the research. I just dont wanna buy a device, that when the company ehind, decides that the device isnt working anymore, i cant do anything to expand the lifecircle. I like how i could get a older Thinkpad to get a new life with Linux 😀

Yes using an older device is nice. If you like to tinker a bit there are even older eInk devices that can be unlocked so maybe finding which one and getting it 2-hand could be an interesting adventure.

Eh... been using joe since the mid 1990s and it's never failed me. Tried and true. But if you do anything in the cli it's always good to at least know the basics of vi because sometimes that's all that might be installed on a system.
All these new-fangled editors. Everyone trying to reinvent the wheel. I mean, you could even go for Microsot's Rust-based Editor too. Especially if you're an old DOS guy. It'll make you feel at home.

Ayer mismo publiqué en el blog un artículo sobre mi experiencia a la hora de reproducir podcasts de la radio pública del estado español.
En el artículo describía cómo desde hace unos días o semanas, mi reproductor de podcasts en el móvil no podía reproducir los podcats públicos creados por un medio público y estatal como es Radio Naciona del España (RNE).
Y también comenté que había expresado mi queja a la defensora del oyente sobre el hecho de que desde el medio público se coartase de esa manera el acceso a su contenido (contenido público realizado con dinero público).
Pues bien, la defensora del oyente ha respondido, y la respuesta que ha dado (nada nuevo) no te va a gustar.
Primero comparto la queja que le envié:
Hola.Desde hace un tiempo vengo comprobando que mi reproductor de podcasts en Android no funcionaba con los podcasts de RTVE. Estoy suscrito a unos cuantos, por ejemplo: El sótano de RNE3, Raíz de 5 de RNE5, y algunos otros. Pero mi reproductor funciona correctamente con otros podcasts, por ejemplo de la SER, y otros independientes.Al principio lo achacaba a un problema de conexión o similar, después de comprobar varias cosas durante días, veo que parece ser que la web de RTVE rechaza los podcasts escuchados con cierta aplicación de software libre que es la que utilizo para escuchar mi colección de podcasts.Es decir, RTVE, está en contra de la neutralidad de la red al coartar el contenido público usando ciertas herramientas. El medio público ofrece su contenido, pero con restricciones para ciertos usuarios. Pero no del todo, porque desde mi portátil sí puedo escuchar los podcats sin problema.¿Hay alguna causa que justifique dicho comportamiento selectivo?
A continuación comparto la respuesta de la defensora del oyente a mi queja:
Gracias por escribirnos.Lamentamos su malestar. Desde la Subdirección de Innovación y Productos Digitales de RTVE nos aportan la siguiente explicación sobre este asunto por el que nos han preguntado muchos usuarios como usted en esta Oficina de la Defensora:"A partir de ahora, la descarga de audios solo está habilitada desde la aplicación oficial de RNE para garantizar la calidad, la correcta atribución del contenido y el cumplimiento de los derechos de autor y de difusión.Permitir la descarga desde aplicaciones de terceros (no oficiales) dificultaría asegurar que los contenidos se distribuyan con la calidad y el contexto adecuados, además de poder vulnerar los acuerdos editoriales y de derechos que protegen tanto a los creadores como a la propia emisora.Esta medida responde a dos motivos principales: por un lado, no podemos conocer ni contabilizar el uso real de nuestros contenidos en esas plataformas, lo que dificulta ofrecer un servicio de calidad y valorar correctamente el alcance. Por otro, el consumo a través de terceros genera un coste directo para RNE (especialmente en términos de CDN), sin ningún beneficio asociado ni control sobre la experiencia del usuario.Por ello, para garantizar un servicio sostenible y de calidad, los contenidos solo estarán disponibles para descarga y escucha dentro de RNE Audio y en aquellas plataformas con las que exista un acuerdo".Le agradecemos su interés y participación.Reciba un cordial saludo.
Lo que entiendo es que a partir de ahora RNE únicamente permitirá el acceso a los podcats de su programación desde la aplicación oficial de RNE.
El contenido es público y pagado con dinero público (vuelvo a recalcar ese hecho) pero sólo podremos hacerlo desde su aplicación desarrollada con dinero público y que no es software libre y solo está disponible en plataformas privativas (nada de f-droid).
También entiendo que igual que en mi portátil por medio de Amarok, estaba suscrito a los podcasts para oirlos en mi equipo, tampoco esto será posible a partir de ahora, teniendo que acceder a su web y reproducirlos desde su reproductor en su página.
Es totalmente injusto que un medio público utilice un medio de difusión público como son los podcats y lo encierre no permitiendo el libre acceso a su contenido.
Las excusas son el poder tener un control de las descargas, acuerdos editoriales, derechos de autor, coste extra para RNE.
¿De verdad con una herramienta de terceros no tienen un acceso al número de descargas de cada audio para tener una trazabilidad de lo más escuchado?
Sobre las demás excusas para imponer ese recorte a la hora de difundir su contenido no tengo más comentarios, con los derechos de autor hemos topado. De acuerdo que hay que proteger esos derechos de autor, pero me temo que más que querer proteger al autor, lo que quieren es proteger a quien gana dinero con el contenido creado con el autor, que no siempre es bien pagado.
Por tanto, ya lo sabes. A partir de ahora parece ser que sólo podrás escuchar sus audios desde la aplicación oficial, su web o aquellas aplicaciones con las que hayan llegado a un acuerdo.
¿Quizás pronto su programación en directo por radio en FM sólo estará disponible para los receptores de radio que ellos aprueben y con los que lleguen a un acuerdo? ¿qué más restricciones tiene en mente un medio público a la hora de difundir su contenido? Lo veremos en próximas entregas.
Si vuestra aplicación de podcats también se ha visto afectada por esta restricción, que parece ser que pronto serán todas, menos las aprobadas por el ente, podéis también enviar una queja y ver si el medio cambia de opinión…
bueno, la respuesta es el mismo copia-pega que recibieron otros usuarios, pero al menos añaden que son varios los usuarios que se quejaron, está bien que les conste eso, porque parece que cada vez más gente se suma al hilo del foro con quejas.
Mientras tanto seguimos esperando a la respuesta del correo enviado como proyecto desde @AntennaPod , al correo que le indicaron a los primeros usuarios. Mientras tanto, animo a quien lea esto a mandar correos también directamente a los programas, para que también esas personas lo sepan
RTVE lleva un tiempo en plena deriva privativa, siguiendo estrategias que olvidan su cualidad de ente público que debería ser accesible a todo el mundo sin poner trabas de por medio. Ahora han decidido que no podamos acceder a sus podcasts bloqueando algunas aplicaciones de terceros, de código abierto y sin publicidad, como AntennaPod.
El artículo se complementa con la respuesta que le dio la defensora del oyente a Victorhck (@victorhck@mastodon.social) donde podemos ver los motivos absurdos cuando hablamos, insisto, de un ente público: control de sus métricas y consumo de recursos públicos sin beneficio asociado. Beneficio asociado! el beneficio de un organismo público lo obtenemos los ciudadanos, en este caso accediendo a su contenido de forma libre sin tener que instalar aplicaciones redundantes como la de RNE Audio (adivina por qué no enlazo esta aplicación).

Soo… I have gotten another CBM dual drive floppy disk. A model 4040, which uses regular 48tpi single sided drive mechanisms. It was sold to me as defective. The owner bought it used 40 years ago. And after a long time in storage that device was not reading disks anymore. Let us start the process of reviving this beauty, ok? #retrocomputing #commodore #commodorePET #floppydisk
The insides seem very familiar. The digital mainboard is as usual mounted upside down in the top case. It is slightly different than the 8050, in that it uses the rather rare 6504 alongside a second 6502 as its two CPUs. The rest is pretty standard: custom RRIOT, ROMs, VIAs and a bit of RAM. The board is in excellent condition and seems to work fine electrically. The system boots up without error. EDIT: careful when testing the board outside its case! Must be properly grounded or else 💥
The analog board looks…. not that great. Not terrible, but there is an ugly hole in the ground plane on the right! Everything is covered in soot and dust and smells of nicotine. I think this machine lived a couple of decades inside a smoker’s home. The transformer and main filter caps look fine.
The drive heads and mechanisms are also pretty grimy. There will be lots of cleaning in the near future! If anyone has a spare analog board *in good shape* I would be very happy! I assume that it might be the cause of our problems.
The most precious piece of this machine is the MOS 6504, which is a 6502 with a reduced address space of 8KB and also omitting several other pins. Today it can be replaced with a 6502 in an adapter board. Later drives like the 8050 simply used a 6502 in its place. This 6504 is from 5th week of 1980. most parts are from the first quarter of 1980 placing this drive in the first half of 1980 at the latest. So 45 years! Not bad!
The most worrisome is the analog board. It is looking quite rough. The copyright shows 1978, which probably means that this is the same board used on the older 2040 disk drive.

Je ne peux exprimer à quel point j’étais enthousiaste lorsqu’un ami m’a envoyé un lien vers cette nouvelle publication. Enfin un livre sur les femmes musulmanes « qui remet en question les représentations simplistes et monolithiques des femmes musulmanes » comme des victimes passives et asservies de l’islam, qui ont dominé pendant trop longtemps. Au lieu de cela, Elhinnawy nous présente la riche et longue histoire du militantisme féministe dans les pays non occidentaux et à majorité musulmane, avec ses diverses luttes, contextes et idéologies, ainsi qu’un aperçu de l’immense potentiel de changement que les féministes musulmanes laïques peuvent créer et créent pour elles-mêmes, leurs communautés et le monde en général. Ce livre est une lecture incontournable pour toute personne souhaitant approfondir sa compréhension et ses connaissances des luttes auxquelles sont confrontées les féministes musulmanes en Occident et dans les pays à majorité musulmane, face aux fondamentalistes religieux et à la droite.
