All of these grifters use speculation upon speculation and then triple down on another speculation.

I quit speculating on almost everything a couple of years ago (for the most part) and now just read and watch to see how things turn out according to these baseless speculations. But I speculate that it is going to get worse in the near future as people are forced to follow speculators or actually see and hear the truth.

But as a dog returns to its vomit, so I return to my speculating.

Israel Is Now Blaming the UN for Its Famine. Here’s the Reality.

A man-made famine is imminent in Gaza and its people require at least 600 trucks a day to stave it off, as Israel deflects blame to the UN.

from #DropSiteNews

The #Israeli government has pivoted to a new deflection: The famine in #Gaza is not the result of #Israel’s publicly announced March 2 blockade of all food entering Gaza, nor is it connected to the Israeli- and U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which replaced the UNRWA aid system Israel shut down with its own militarized version in late May. Instead, according to the new Israeli campaign, the blame lies with the #UnitedNations. “Hundreds of aid trucks have entered Gaza with Israel’s approval, but the supplies are standing idle, undelivered,” the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared on X. “The reason? The #UN refuses to distribute the aid.”

Heyet-i murahhasamızdan ricam, azınlıklar konusu görüşülürken

Çünkü her seferinde başkalarının haritasını yırtmak yerine,
kendi varlığından feragat etmeyi tercih edenler çıkıyor sahneye.
Ve biz her defasında, aynı sahte alkışlarla kandırılıyoruz.

Roll Top Backpack, Handsewn

a backpack in a cream fabric with a short dark brown bottom; it closes by rolling down the top and is kept closed by a strap that feeds through two D-rings.

I might be slightly insane? Or am I going to prove something about the nature and accessibility of sewing and MYOG1 as a hobby?

I love my modular backpack, but it has a very modern look that is maybe not the best thing when otherwise dressed in historybounding dress, and it’s also a bit bigger than I planned or needed it to be.

So, when one of the shops I buy from had some waterproof cotton canvas on sale I failed my saving throw against temptations and bought a few meters, with the intent to make myself a backpack in a different style.

It needs to be a backpack, because my back doesn’t like asymmetrical bags2, and as far as I know 19th century backpacks weren’t the most comfortable things, so I decided to go for a vaguely timeless roll top model that has the added advantage not to require a lot of hardware for the closure, just a few D-rings.

Leather straps would look cool, but also require some tools that I still don’t have, so I decided to look for some cotton webbing, and when I finally found some in 25 mm and 50 mm width I could finally start on the project.

Except for one thing: thread. As much as I believe that regular n°50 cotton thread got a bad reputation from sellers who decided to cut quality in favour of profit, it is not up to the task of sewing a backpack. Nor that I’d use regular sew-all poly thread either.

I do have some of the thread I used for my other backpack, which would have been strong enough, but it’s also in black, which isn’t exactly the look I was aiming for on the natural / ecru colour of both the canvas and the webbing. I also misremembered it as only being available in that colour (it isn’t), so I wasn’t tempted into doing a full online order of technical materials just for that.

On the other hand, I did have in my stash some strong thread I could trust for this job, in natural / ecru. There was only one problem: it was 33×2 Tex linen, and not suitable for the sewing machine. You can’t handsew a backpack.

Or can you? Of course it’s going to be much slower, but I’m still in a situation where I have more time and space for handsewing than I have for machine sewing. And as for strength, my perception is that for the same stitch length an handsewn backstitch is stronger than a machine lockstitch, or at least it is more effort to unpick (and thus harder to accidentally unravel if the thread breaks).

And so I tried.

And it worked.

a needle coming straight up through layers of fabric and webbing, in the motion called stabbing.

Having to backstitch everything instead of being able to use a running backstitch of course meant that it was slower than other sewing projects, and any time there were more than two layers of fabric I had to use the stabbing motion rather than the sewing one, which is even slower, but other than a few places with many layers of both fabric and webbing it wasn’t hard.

And to be fair, the seams were fewer and shorter than other sewing projects, and with the usual interruptions and uneven time availability it was done in less than a month, which is somewhat typical for one of my handsewn projects.

the layers of the base pinned into the sides, trying to keep everything properly aligned especially on the corners in a way that would be very messy if fed as-is to a sewing machine.

It may have been because of the pattern, but I think it’s relevant that it was also easier than other backpacks I’ve made, with significantly less cursing, even when doing seams that would have been quite fiddly when sewn by machine.

I have to admit that now I’m tempted to plan another backpack using the same pattern or a slight variation, sewn by machine in a different fabric, to see the difference in the time it takes and to check if the changes I think would make it easier to sew by machine are actually the right thing to do. But maybe I’ll wait a bit, other projects are in the queue.

The pattern is as usual online, released as #FreeSoftWear.

Having used it for a while, I have to say that it is just the right size to fit all the things I usually carry,

The fact that it only opens from the top means that finding things that have fallen to the very bottom involves a bit of rummaging, but not having to change a zipper every few years when (not if) it breaks is also very nice, so I’m not sure which shape of backpack I prefer.

the back of the backpack, showing the shoulder straps made with wide webbing that end in two D-rings, and a pattern of horizontal webbing sewn at 4 cm intervals to attach accessories.

The soft back of course is an issue when the backpack is filled with small items, but the molle webbing is there exactly because I have plans to solve it, beside the trivial “put something flat towards the back”.

As an object, I’m happy with the result. As a project, it was way more than successful, exceeding all expectations, especially for something somewhat experimental like this one was.

>The "Hatshepsut Problem" is a direct link to gender normatives in regards to ancient Egyptian social structures. Although she did hold Queen status, her reign, especially after, was disregarded and even erased. Her reign could be considered more successful than some pharaohs' reigns, for example with expanding borders, which can be seen as a threat to traditional gender roles. This raises questions about the conflict between power and traditional gender roles, and to what extent modernism and conservatism overlap.[86][page needed]

I would never be bothered by a trans person. Somebody who went through so much, also learned to reflect and fight for what's important in life: i.e. identity. Persons who question their decisions, who run through millions of questions again and again, also from others - these people grow inside. Their horizon grows. Their decisions are some of the hardest decisions in life that I can imagine.
Such a person is not likely to be evil.

"Exchange economics frames life as a contest between bargainers who maneuver to outwit each other in order to control pieces of a fragmented world. Free trade, the free market—these are oxymorons: where profiteering can bend everyone and everything to its prerogatives, eventually no one is free to focus on anything else. Exchange economics imposes a one-dimensional scale of value, according to which everything can be appraised and traded. Today, this framework has taken over all of our relations and means of survival. This is why so many people are materially, socially, and emotionally impoverished.

The gift economy prevails wherever people can share things freely without keeping score. In gift economics, the participants receive more the more they bestow—not only because generosity tends to beget more of the same, but also because gift-giving is its own reward. Everyone who has shared a real friendship or attended a successful potluck has seen that when the opportunity presents itself, human beings enthusiastically return to this way of relating."

How did we get here?

@AlexanderKingsbury

Talk about "cheap claims":

- what did I say that was a fabrication? I made accurate, factual statements. Demonstrate how anything I said was false.

- how and why is voluntary exchange a "fundamental part of capitalism"? I mean sure, it happens. I'm not saying that capitalism eliminated voluntary exchange. More like it enclosed it. Capitalism made exchange mandatory. Sure, you have some choices. But those choices are defined by the market society that has been imposed on us.

People (outside a privileged few with the power to push their agenda) did not arrive at capitalism voluntarily, it was forced upon most of the world violently and through regulation (like Enclosure).

How did we get here?

@AlexanderKingsbury

You gave me an example of what you considered to be "free market capitalism". I replied with statements countering that example. You then replied to those statements by saying: "Meh, cheap claims, fabricated to discard counterexamples to your narrative."

It seems obvious to me, but whatever. I still would like to see you explain exactly what's fabricated about those specific statements I made. I don't see any point in dwelling on my earlier statement about what I thought you would claim about free market capitalism, I'll just stipulate that I could have been wrong about that so we can move on to discussing the actual topic at hand rather than discussing our discussion in a pointless debate-me-bro feedback loop going nowhere.

I am also asking (as you suggested I should do rather than assuming) what you think those "basic concepts underlying capitalism" are that explain how and why voluntary exchange is a "fundamental part of capitalism", and how those concepts came to underlie capitalism. Was capitalism intentionally and systematically built on them?

Nuchal sesamoids in shrews

Lateral (a, b) and postero-dorsal (c) views of the head and neck region in alcohol-preserved, intact specimens of Congosorex verheyeni (a, SMNS 50411), Surdisorex norae (b, FMNH 190260) and Congosorex phillipsorum (c, FMNH 177721). Posterodorsal view (c) is of the same semi-transverse section, osteology in red, with (left) and without (right) reconstructed soft-tissues evident in CT scan. rce = rhomboideus cervicis, s = nuchal sesamoid, sc = scapula, sp = splenius, tc = tracheal cartilages, T2 = second thoracic vertebra, T6 = sixth thoracic vertebra. Note greater opacity in nuchal sesamoids compared to tracheal cartilages. Oblique streaks in (c, left) and through the hyoid, angular process of dentary, ectotympanics and posterior skull in (b) are CT artefacts. Scale bars = 5 mm. Yuan et al. (2024: fig. 3).

I missed this paper (Yuan et al. 2024) when it came out last year, but my friend and colleague Jeremiah Scott brought it to my attention. The bit on nuchal sesamoids in shrews is so good and so weird that I’m just going to copy and paste it in its entirety. I loathe numbered references and supplementary info, so I’ve converted the numbered refs to standard author-year refs and inserted the relevant supplementary figure. If you’re not up on insectivore taxonomy (I wasn’t), Soricidae are shrews, Erinaceidae are hedgehogs and moonrats, and Talpidae are true moles. Yuan et al. (2024) is open access and linked here and at the bottom of the post.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Among the most surprising results of our analysis is the discovery of a robust sesamoid in Myosoricini (see taxonomy in the electronic supplementary material, appendix S6), denser than nearby tracheal cartilages, similar in opacity to adjacent vertebral bone, and extending dorso-cranially from the second thoracic neural arch (figure 3; electronic supplementary material, table S4) towards the nuchal region. In Myosorex and Congosorex (electronic supplementary material, appendix S7), the nuchal sesamoid is elongate and comparable in proximo-distal length to these species’ humeri. It is shorter in the fossorial Surdisorex but still robust (figure 3b). Lin et al. (2013) noticed a structurally similar but smaller sesamoid in species of Crocidura, Suncus and Scutisorex, observations which we confirm in our sample (electronic supplementary material, figure S3, table S4). Lin et al. (2013) noted the element’s role in anchoring the splenius muscle and discussed how it may increase neck mobility. Our anatomical observations are consistent with their interpretation, although we cannot rule out additional functions, such as sensation or defence, particularly given the extraordinary length of the sesamoid in Congosorex and Myosorex. In Congosorex phillipsorum, the three most conspicuous muscles attaching to the nuchal sesamoid are splenius, rhomboideus capitis and rhomboideus cervicis (figure 3c), as shown in our animated CT volume (electronic supplementary material, appendix S7). Splenius originates along the proximal half of the sesamoid and inserts on the lateral surface of the anterior petromastoid (or ‘tabular’ of Sharma 1958). Both rhomboid muscles insert on the posterior end of the vertebral border of the scapula; rhomboideus capitis originates from the middle region of the sesamoid and rhomboideus cervicis originates from its cranial region (electronic supplementary material, appendix S7).

Lateral views of the neck region in alcohol-preserved, intact specimens of an erinaceid (A, Hylomus suillus, AMNH 278568) talpid (B, Uropsilus soricipes, AMNH 232373), and two soricids: Crocidura russula (C, UMMZ 157845), and Blarina brevicauda (D, UMMZ 154698). Note small nuchal sesamoids in A-C, lack thereof in D. Abbreviations are s = nuchal sesamoid, T2 = second thoracid vertebra, tc = tracheal cartilages. Scalebars = 5mm. Yuan et al. (2024: fig. S3).

We do not yet know the function of the robust nuchal sesamoid in Myosoricini. In specimens of Myosorex for which we have sex identifications (electronic supplementary material, table S4), the sesamoid : humerus length ratio is approximately 0.9 and broadly overlaps among males and females, suggesting that it is not the result of sexual selection. The sesamoid is embedded within soft tissues (electronic supplementary material, appendix S7) and, despite its needle-like appearance (figure 3), does not appear to protrude beyond the skin. There is no obvious lumen or groove along which glandular secretions could have been transported. Again, this is consistent with, but not exclusive to, a function related to mobility (Lin et al. 2013).

The nuchal sesamoid would be unlikely to survive skeletonization techniques typically applied in most museums, and is evident only among intact, alcohol-preserved or cleared-and-stained specimens. This is probably why it has remained undocumented in the published literature until now. For example, Sharma (1958) correctly noted in Suncus murinus that ‘the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra’ (to which the sesamoid attaches) ‘is well developed’, but mentioned sesamoids only in reference to the manus and pes. Crocidura russula (electronic supplementary material, figure S3) and all other species of Crocidurinei observed to date (electronic supplementary material, table S4) nonetheless show a smaller version of the element seen in Myosoricini, as does the erinaceid Hylomys suillus (electronic supplementary material, figure S3a). Several talpids exhibit an elongate, midline element dorsal to cervical vertebrae and caudal to the skull. This approaches T2 in some specimens of Uropsilus (electronic supplementary material, figure S3b), but the sesamoid in talpids lacks a clear bony connection to their more gracile T2 neural arch.
