A new insurance company insisted I use their app for three months to monitor my driving. I discovered that I simply could not come to a stop gently enough that it wasn't regarded as "abrupt." So I gave up stopping at stop signs, and just rolled through slowly. It's illegal and less safe, but more acceptable to the app. Similarly, braking when you saw a pedestrian about to step into the road increases your insurance. It's better to ignore them and blast on through.

@drahardja @allpoints @bodhipaksa In Britain its unusual for older adults to be expected to install telemetry or use apps for their insurance. Its not even compulsory (by law) for teens/young adults to have it, but insurance quotes are unaffordable (and/or companies simply refuse to quote) if they don't.
It is offered to older drivers (I only started to drive in my 40s) but the premium differences aren't significant compared to non-telemetry based policies.
Even for young people they only have to have it for a year or so as the insurers don't even want the extra admin work of processing the data (which leads to a spate of collisions as some take more chances as soon as they think they aren't being monitored as closely).
@drahardja @allpoints @bodhipaksa as for the cars themselves, my 2018 VW Golf GTI won't even send data back to VW if I allowed or wanted it to, they abandoned collecting it when many countries ceased their 3G mobile networks (also stopping a lot of useful features from working, such as real time traffic display and petrol station info on the in built navi)
@drahardja @allpoints @bodhipaksa my car doesn't even contain any kind of SIM - it would only have gone online via a 3G USB dongle (I use that USB socket instead for a wireless Android Auto dongle, which works fairly well).
The reason VW gave for not continuing the services is apparently they couldn't get the same level of security over LTE (presumably they don't trust the connected device not to be leaking data elsewhere!)
I deliberately picked a 2018 MK7,5 GTI rather than the newer ones. Although price was mostly a factor (and any extra power I can't use anyway in normal driving), it doesn't have things like Kessy (keyless start) which is a security risk, and I can still look at the ODB2 data and make changes easily (its more locked down on newer VW cars)

Also, at some point if your car ever goes in for service I expect it will become standard procedure to do a data dump. (Don't get me started on right to repair legislation 🙂)
@allpoints @drahardja @bodhipaksa One problem I've noticed is the manufacturers often hold useful features to ransom - if you don't accept at least some of the telemetry, the features disappear.
That said, I suspect a lot of them might be removed anyway as it seems at least with VW (maybe other Euro manufacturers) they aren't /that/ interested in the data once the car is >5 years old and has by then often fallen out of the main dealer servicing network (especially in Europe where regulations allow you to use independent garages for servicing whilst keeping any warranties)
VW also seem to turn a blind eye to reverse engineering and aftermarket maintenance for cars >5 years old, allowing things like OBDEleven, VCDS and third party diagnostic kit to work as expected..

It works for health (what’s left after social security), home, cars etc. It’s a shame everyone don’t do that worldwide.
