There was a recent bombing near the displacement camp where Mahmoud's family was staying, and while his family were not physically hit by the bomb, they were still physically and psychologically attacked. Mahmoud said: "The bombing was next to us and we could not sleep because of the injuries and damage that occurred in the place [...] The sound of the bombing was frightening to me and the children, which destroyed their psyche and they started screaming in fear"

I think that anyone who has been paying attention knows by now that violence like this is the norm in Palestine. This moment does not represent an exceptional state of urgency. If anything it reminds me of the stories of other survival crowdfunders both within and outside of Palestine, who live in a state of urgency 24/7, a state of urgency that cannot be felt as real to anyone over the internet except for them.

Perhaps you've become desensitized to crowdfund requests like this. Perhaps no amount of words or images will ever break you out of seeing this request as nothing but another well-intentioned but ultimately futile social media post. But behind every single post like this is somebody's reality. We can scroll past all these posts we want, but that will not make anyone's problem go away.

Mahmoud's family will never be free from this violence until the occupation is over. But until it is over, I am going to do everything within my power to keep his reality alive by sharing his story and fundraiser. You have that power as well. Use it--and don't stop with him.

Someone in our group is frustrated that student orgs and encampments have been able to quickly raise funds and donations when Palestinians are still getting nothing--and mind you this person isn't alone in making that criticism (here's a really popular twitter thread with that same take twitter.com/literElly/status/1…)

I saw another person on Twitter say, if you donated to bail funds for encampment-related arrests, donate double to Palestinian fundraisers, and that's what I'm trying to do now

Following the invasion of Rafah, Mahmoud and his family have now been displaced again to the middle of the desert at Khan Younis with no reception and no service. He has to walk kilometers just to be able to communicate with us.

We are now at $4214, making slow and steady progress. Let's keep the momentum going.

After a very successful fundraising online teach-in on Friday, we were able to get Mahmoud's fundraiser to $6379. But Mahmoud has still been really stressed about how far there is to go, and the physical conditions of Khan Younis have not been helping. There's a shortage of food and water for the children and today he sent us a picture of his nephew lying down in the tent in hopes of escape from the extreme heat.

I know there are a million fundraising requests like this out there and nobody's suffering is lesser than any other's. But I'm going to switch to having daily or near-daily goals for this fundraiser since traction has been a problem. Can we try to get $10 more today?

I haven't posted about Mahmoud for a long time because it feels like social media has been such a dead end for fundraising. But Mahmoud just sent us an update saying: "The Israeli occupation army attacked the tents of the displaced people in Mawasi Khan Yunis. They approached the verses near the tents and opened fire over the heads of civilians in the area where I was. I hope not to be displaced again. I need your prayers. / There is no safe place to go / My mind is scattered right now and I don't know what to do / I and my family want to leave when the crossing opens as soon as possible. I need your help in achieving the fundraising goal to safely exit Gaza. / I am the only man with my family in the place where I am, and there is great pressure in my mind due to the provision of livelihood opportunities and the availability of food and water. The tents in their area (Al-Mawasi Khan Yunis) are literally being bombed now. He said the number of martyrs has reached 50 martyrs and more than 150 injured.

With the help of someone else organizing a benefit event and other people's donations, the fundraiser has finally gotten out of stagnation, and given the current circumstances, we really hope we can keep the traction going so Mahmoud and his family don't have so much uncertainty about the financial possibility of escape weighing over their heads. And that goes for every survival crowdfunder. "When people's crowdfunding needs don't get met, they die" is a reality we don't have to permit to continue. Do what you can to materially support people who are dispossessed, help them build capacity for life beyond mere survival, and destroy everything that keeps them in a position of permanent incapacitation, in a state of constant near-death. End Zionism, end colonialism, free Palestine.

I think the problem with "free speech" is that there's no such thing as absolute free speech, if for no other reason because of spam and illegal content.

So everyone has a limit somewhere, and the only real question is what's the vibe you want in your instance. I'm of the opinion that we need different kinds of instances with different rules and different atmospheres, and as long as someone is creating a place where people enjoy spending time together, there's really no wrong answer regarding how that instance should look...
