Maybe your childhood inspiration was a movie star or an athlete. Mine was #Tom_Lehrer (1928-2025). I tracked down & studied the sheet music to his songs, memorized all of them (including "The Elements"), and started writing & performing my own satiric ditties.
Lehrer could have done standup with the best lines he used in between his songs. Probably the best-known of his nonmusical quips: Satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
But there were others..

15 years ago, solar power was nearly four times the cost of fossil fuel alternatives. Now, according to two new UN reports, renewable energy has passed a “positive tipping point,” and solar power is now 41% cheaper than fossil fuels.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “The fossil fuel age is flailing and failing.” The reports also shared a 74% growth in electricity generated globally from wind, solar, and other green sources — just in the last year.

An excellent example of why I enjoy reading @pluralistic -- the way he encapsulates thoughts like this: "Our technologies quickly turn into cognitive prostheses: as soon as we can externalize some function of our thinking into a technology, we do." pluralistic.net/2025/07/28/twi…

Urgent help for OpenPrinting needed!

As many here know, I am co-founder and lead of OpenPrinting since 2001, known as the print guru for Linux and free software by many. I also got one of the 8 fellows of the Linux Foundation for this.

Up to now I was working at Canonical, hired back in 2006 just to run OpenPrinting and also to maintain printing-related Ubuntu packages.

... 🧵

Please boost.

At Europe OpenSourceSummit 2024 in Wien Till Kamppeter had a talk. It's a complete overview of the project with the history since 2001 until now, the archivements, problems, ongoing and future work, and the community around the printing. He does very important work for printing in Open Source (and other) environments.

The co-#creator of modern #Linux #Printing just got laid off from #Canonical and needs our help and our support. Please boost! ubuntu.social/@till/1149324772…

Two people are dead and four are wounded after a gunman opened fire outside a Nevada casino, according to reports.

Gunfire broke out at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno around 7:25 a.m. Monday, with the carnage focused around the casino’s valet parking area, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.

The gunman was shot by police and detained, and is among the wounded – some of whom are reportedly in critical condition.

This is for anyone that orders #Coke at #McDonald's...

Did you know that McDonald's is required by #CocaCola to keep their syrup and fountain drink water <45F? (The CO2 is already quite cold.)

This is to minimize any "head" (or frothing) when the drinks are poured and to provide a positive guest experience.

You do not need to order "ice" in your soft drinks. The liquid in your drink is already quite cold the moment it comes out of the machine.

The only thing ordering ice does is increase McDonald's profits since less volume of drink will be dispensed and you will still be charged the same amount of money.

Source: One of my good friends back when I lived in Atlanta worked for Coca Cola in IT, but regularly worked with the group that managed their strategic partnerships.

Also, it cost McDonald's (back in 2015) $0.012 per "large" (32 oz) drink of fountain Coke. This included the product and the cup (which Coca Cola subsidized McDonald's costs to have them have the "Coca Cola" branding on them.

Of course that was back in 2015. I'm sure they cost a little more now. But we're still talking maybe what? $0.05? $0.10? At most? Including cup + product?

Remember this the next time you see the price for a large fountain drink of Coke at McDonald's.

If you want your petition to accomplish anything it needs to come with the implicit threat of violence being performed on persons in government if it is ignored.

This is a HUGE part of why the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution exists and must be defended at all costs.

If they don't think you can hurt them, they will not consider your proposal. Especially when they believe what they're doing is righteous.

I disagree, most governments will gladly throw you in prison for non-compliance with law, they need more slave labor anyway. All you've done is given them a watchlist.

If they believe they'll receive bodily harm for crossing the line then they will carefully consider how many people are backing a petition.

They shit themselves when patriots took a stroll through "their" building in 2020 because they know they've been fucking people for decades and thought it finally came to bite them. Once they realized those people were unarmed and not there to murder them they enacted vengeance on them for over 4 years. From my point of view it looked like a threat, "We'll disappear you into inhumane treatment and slander you while we do it if you dare rise up against your masters"

Reform have pledged to repeal the Online Safety Act and polling says they'd win a majority if an election ran tomorrow. I have predicted since last year, and I hold this prediction, that the 2029 election will result in a Labour minority government. After that it will be anyone's game between Reform and the Liberal Democrats as to who can win the election that will follow shortly after. That's my overall prediction, and actually falls in line with roughly what Lord Ashcroft predicted some years ago with a new "Party A" and "Party B" forming to replace the old parties.

It really does provide all the details, and more, about how to "properly" configure and setup a WG network of hosts and making things work.

Tailscale is a separate service. If you are interested in minimizing external dependencies, this can help you. That said, Tailscale has many tricks up its sleeve for maintaining peer connections. More to the point though, this was an exercise in learning how Wireguard actually works.

Basically you follow @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy in the fediverse. That account will then follow you back. Accept its follow to make sure your fediverse posts get sent the bridge and make it into Bluesky.

Your @otownkim@toot.community would then be converted to
@otownkim.toot.community.ap.brid.gy over on Bluesky and you can tell everyone that wants to follow you on Bluesky to simply follow you here ... there. 😉

It does take a while for everything to get set up though so once you follow the bsky bridgy app it's good to wait a while. You can always search for your bsky profile after a little while to see if it's been all set up.

Once everything has been set up you can interact with your bluesky followers as if they were right here on the fediverse.

But they need to follow your bluesky profile, and that doesn't get set up immediately (or automatically). You have to follow @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy FIRST and then you have to wait for it to creat your bsky profile to bridge the two realms.

in reply to OtownKim

That's just it. You can do this right now. This has nothing to do with bluesky! This sets up a wormhole between your toot.community account and bluesky. It creates a wormhole on bluesky that links bluesky back to your toot.community account.

There is no 72 hour waiting.

There is no logging into Bluesky.

This makes your current fedi profile (@otownKim@toot.community) accessible to people on bluesky where they can interact with you as if you were local to bluesky and the bluesky users were local here on the fediverse.

Immigration agents told a teenage US citizen: ‘You’ve got no rights.’ He secretly recorded his brutal arrest

Birne Helene reshared this.

So krass:

I really appreciate that #Kmail has an option that can convert HTML email into plain-text/ markdown because when you've got dark mode enabled across your OS email either blinds you (HTML Email) or you can't read anything (black text on a nearly black background).

Kmail seems to do it right, and I appreciate that. #KDE #Kubuntu #email #client

Hey Brad, thanks for the heads up. Managed to crash Hetzner’s console while attempting to fix the issue so I’m locked out until they fix the issue on their end. Hopefully will have it up again tomorrow. I’m planning on fixing the core issue towards the end of the week after I’m done with the updates to Kitten’s renderer. Predictably, what is deemed ‘sensitive’ and therefore censored goes well beyond pornography and obviously illegal or adult material. Already UK users of X have been blocked from viewing footage of an anti-asylum protest, a tweet calling for single-sex spaces and a video of a speech in parliament on the grooming-gangs scandal. Historical trivia, such as a thread on Richard the Lionheart, and classic artworks like Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son have been shielded by the tech censors. A thread on X of examples of what has been censored under the Online Safety Act, collated by Benjamin Jones of the Free Speech Union, has itself been partially censored due to the Online Safety Act. Open, political debate online is now a thing of the past.
in reply to Flick 🇬🇧

Hmmm.

The Online Safety Act also creates a whole host of new criminal offences. Most alarming is Section 179 – the ‘false communications offence’ – which makes it a crime to say something you know to be false that causes ‘non-trivial psychological harm’. Breaking this anti-misinformation law can lead to a prison sentence of up to 51 weeks.

I would say that convincing a child that s/he can change sex could cause “non-trivial psychological harm”.

I'm H. Faust, the CFO of Pleroma. Regarding the latest dystopian laws in Britbongistan it saddens me to announce that we are implementing a test to verify your age before you post something from the UK. The test will consist of 80s Movie and TV trivia and at the end of the test you will have to write three slurs.

This will help us weed out underage users and comply with the British Caliphate regime. I know this will affect the 0.4% of our users, but it is something we have to do.

Imagine a federation without British users? No bean on toast? No biscuits vs cookies debates? No SCORE SOME FUCKING GOALS posts? Perish the thought!

Tata, and farewell.
