You know, it seems like most of Western society is in a war against time.

From Boomers and Gen Xers and elder Millennials frantically looking for life extension schemes, to our blindness around the slow creep of things like climate change and famine and long-term impacts of repeated infections with raging plagues, to our obsession with and elevation of youth as the solution to all our problems: we seem to spend a lot of time and energy avoiding the idea that time progresses.

in reply to John

Remember a year ago when every expert said that Israel's machinations around aid and supply of food to Gaza would, eventually, result in a Israeli-made famine that could kill 500k-1 million Palestinians? Remember when they said that when we "notice" people starving, it would already be too late?

To consider that argument, one must acknowledge that time exists. So the West shrugged.

in reply to John

Remember when Democrats (the "good" ones lol) sold off vast swathes of protected land to pass a shitty infrastructure bill that Trump dismantled with an EO 15 minutes after he took office? (The "good" parts; he kept the bad parts, as per the longstanding relationship between Democrats and Republicans)

Democrats can't acknowledge that time exists; they live in a benighted, foolish, "less evil" now from which they do not have the tools to escape.

We're trapped with them.

His current comeback only exists because he is the only one exposing the ultra-wokeness in the FOSS community while also showing alternatives. But I remember him quitting fedi entirely because of all the anime girls on instances like FSE or how he threaten to quit LBRY/Odysee because a front page video dared to drop the s-bomb.

Israel has starved to death 6 more Palestinians today in Gaza, bringing the total number of death by forced starvation to 175.

At the same time, Israel has killed 69 people, including 37 people seeking aid.

Israel is starving and bombarding Gaza, with US backing.

The apartheid state in Palestine is the root cause of the violence, of the suffering. That is the root cause. Not to mention the fact that the apartheid state is a massive war machine with military capabilities that are fighting mostly kids, civilians. That’s who they’ve been killing for decades, civilians. There’s never been a Palestinian army. So even the even the term the Gaza war, even that term, which so many people use all the time. There is no Gaza war! There’s a genocide going on. And there are groups of courageous Palestinians who are trying to fight for their liberation, or trying to end [the genocide], or at least trying to to slow it down somehow. That is the context.

The state of Israel, from the moment it was established, did not stop engaging in war and violence in the region, be it against the Palestinian people or be it against the countries that neighbor Palestine. Constantly, constantly constantly. And as a strategy. And the strategy was we will be the scariest most brutal bully, gangster in this region. That's it. And that's what they've done. So why is it, how does it make sense on any level to continue to support and to continue to enhance the obstacle?

Now is the time to take the trapping class.

I don't post this so I have less beaver, and I don't post it for "the world of weekend warriors," I post it because there are people on NAS and others who hunt but need to step up their game for self-reliance in upcoming times.

Now what had to be done during World War II with the concentration camps is they had to be liberated. They had to be liberated. The problem was not only that there was severe need for humanitarian aid as we know exists in Gaza for decades now, but the need was to dismantle the camps, liberate the people and rid the country, or rid the world I should say, of the regime that put them in place. And this is exactly what we need to do. And this exactly I believe how we need to discuss Palestine.

Humpback whales are crashing orca hunts – seemingly driven by an instinct to rescue other animals.

It’s one of the ocean’s most unexpected mysteries: a seal is being hunted by a pod of killer whales… when out of nowhere, two humpback whales rush in, trumpeting, massive, and seemingly determined to stop the kill.

#TIL -
The phrase "Number One" in Star Trek has a rich and evolving history intertwined with both naval tradition and the franchise’s own storytelling innovation.

### Origins in Star Trek

- The term first appears in the unaired 1965 pilot episode "The Cage" as the only name for the character portrayed by Majel Barrett, who served as Captain Christopher Pike’s First Officer on the USS Enterprise. She was simply addressed as “Number One,” highlighting her position as the second-in-command but also lending a mysterious, almost mechanical distinction to her character[1][2][3].
- NBC resisted having a woman in such a prominent role, leading to her removal from the regular series. Much of her logical and emotionally restrained personality was then assigned to Spock in later episodes[1][4].

### Evolution and Significance

- The character of Number One was revived in modern Star Trek—notably in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds—with the name Una Chin-Riley and much deeper development[5][4][2]. The nickname “Number One” remains a sign of exceptional competence and respect, reflecting both her role and unique talents.
- The phrase later became widespread throughout the franchise as a general nickname for a starship’s First Officer. This was cemented by Captain Picard’s routine use of “Number One” for Commander Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and has been adopted or referenced for various First Officers, such as Saru in Discovery[2][6][7].

### Real-World and Non-Star Trek Usage

- The phrase does not originate in Star Trek, but is actually borrowed from the British Royal Navy, where “Number One” refers to the First Lieutenant—second-in-command aboard a ship and commonly called “Number One” as a form of address[3][7]. Star Trek adapted this naval tradition for its futuristic starships.
- The use of “Number One” outside of Star Trek is uncommon in popular culture but remains standard in naval and occasionally other military settings to mean the person next in command after the Captain[3][7].

### Changing Meanings

- In-universe, “Number One” can be both a sign of rank (First Officer/Executive Officer) and a personal nickname, especially for Una Chin-Riley. Star Trek novels and more recent series have explored it as both a shorthand for her outstanding qualities and as a callback to her mysterious, logic-driven persona[2][4].
- The usage of “Number One” as a routine address has become a mix of Star Trek tradition and narrative choice. Some captains (like Kirk or Janeway) prefer personal names, while the Picard/Riker “Number One” dynamic has become iconic within the franchise[7].

In summary: Star Trek popularized “Number One” as an affectionate, distinguished nickname for the First Officer, inspired by real naval tradition, starting with Majel Barrett’s iconic character and later broadening to represent Starfleet’s second-in-command. The phrase’s blending of real-world and science fiction meanings has helped it resonate far beyond its Star Trek beginnings[1][4][7].

California State Capitol - Rally and Lobby Day - August 19, 2025 - 1 PM

STOP AB495

As California lawmakers recess for the summer, Assembly Bill 495, dubbed the “Family Preparedness Plan Act of 2025,” sits poised in the Senate Appropriations Committee. Authored by Assemblywoman Celeste Rodriguez (San Fernando-D), the bill claims to provide compassionate solutions for immigrant families facing sudden separations due to detention or deportation. But critics—including ...

Today likely saw the largest single protest rally in Australian history.

Under dark rain clouds, hundreds of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a huge demonstration opposing the ongoing genocide in Gaza, as well as the complicity of the Australian government in failing to oppose Israel's crimes against humanity.

The 'March for Humanity: Save Gaza' saw organisers' expectations smashed and the government's worst fears exceeded as a great ocean of people showed up, despite pouring rain, strong winds, and a week of front page negative stories carrying anti-protest messages from the Minns state government and NSW police. It was huge.

An ocean of people, diverse in age, background, gender, religion, and rain-mitigation techniques, yet united via common humanity with those suffering starvation, snipers and shells, displacement, destruction and deprivation in Gaza:
"In our thousands,
in our millions,
we are all
Palestinians!"

The protest had four demands:
- Let all aid into Gaza
- Immediate Israeli ceasefire and withdrawal from Gaza
- Sanction Israel now
- End Australia’s two way arms trade with Israel

Similar demands have animated near-weekly protests on unceded Gadigal land on over 80 previous Sundays, each of which has seen thousands or tens of thousands of people march through the city centre—all without serious incident or public 'chaos', all without tolerating or expressing antisemitism, and without ever losing any of the various cases the NSW government and/or NSW police have brought to the NSW Supreme Court in various attempts to thwart these gatherings. Each Sunday, a wide variety of interesting, passionate and insightful speakers have addressed the movement: Palestinian refugees and poets, Jewish academics and authors, Aboriginal elders and activists, student leaders and children, survivors of the 1948 Nakba, nurses, doctors, journalists, artists, lawyers, historians, teachers, faith leaders, union leaders, and even an occasional parliamentarian or two (some of the few in public office who have consistently called for adherence to international law).

Today was the biggest gathering so far. And yet one of the first to actually get substantial (or indeed any) media coverage: before, during and after.

in reply to EndemicEarthling

Prior to today's march, the largest political demonstration in Australian history is generally considered to have been the (unsuccessful) Stop the War rally in Feb 2003 protesting the then Howard government's support for joining Bush and Blair in illegally invading Iraq, a cause which saw something like 200k people gather in Sydney on a sunny summer Saturday, along with many other massive rallies around the continent and with millions more people protesting worldwide.

I was at both events. From a purely subjective vibe, and with all the dangers associated with attempting to compare events 25 years apart, today felt bigger.

As for official estimates, NSW Police claimed (while the march was still ongoing) the crowd was 'at least 100,000 people'. Organisers later concluded, after reviewing aerial footage, that there were likely between 200,000—300,000 participants.

Whatever the precise number, NSW Police confirmed what we could almost see from somewhere in the middle: that as the front of the march was arriving at Milsons Point station (the planned end point), there were still thousands of people yet to get past Wynyard station (south of the official start point), a distance of almost 3km, along a route that most of the way is an eight lane bridge—all filled with people.

This is so satisfying. Yet, it beggars belief how EU governments support Israel with weapons and trade, in stark contrast to their electoral base who support a free Palestine.
Vote them out at the very least.
