Cow Most Sacred - TomDispatch.com (2011)

#geopolitics #US #war #imperialism #corruption

The ridiculously inflated and inefficient US military budget is a sad joke of a social net, providing protected, well-paid and mostly useless jobs all around the country at an incredible high price for everyone... For the state, the citizens, the US military, and finally the rest of the world.

Dotfiles feel too intimate and personal to share

I was kind of surprised to see this article on HackerNews, so I thought I'd ask here; how do you handle your dotfiles and do you share them publicly?

My own dotfiles started from those provided by ArcoLinux, with a bunch of changes over the years I had them. Currently installed using Ansible, because that's more sensible than Bash for this imo.

_Democrat DECLARES Zohran Mamdani Is The “DEMOCRATIC MESSAGE,” Dems Are Going FULL SOCIALIST_

They denied being "socialists" for more than a century, then they embraced it.

Then also denied being "communists" for the past few decades. But now they're embracing it.

At least now, they're being honest (sort of, anyway.)

What they are is state supremacists (of the totalitarian variety) who, at a minimum, believe they (collectively, of course) have the right to control whatever aspect of anyone's and/or of everyone's life that they decide is "for the general welfare" and/or is "for the greater good" and/or is "for the children" and/or is "to redress past wrongs" (committed by those no longer alive, against those also no longer alive,) regardless of whether or not they will allow you to have nominal rights to liberty and/or nominal title to whatever property.

Note that what nominal ("in name only") rights they will allow is the major issue that divides one state supremacist from another. Of course, in any state supremacist system, all rights are "in name only," because they can, will, and fully intend to, use the power of the state they control to make you do whatever they want—you know, the same state whose courts decide what the laws (and Constitutional clauses) actually mean, and how those laws (and Constitutional clauses) apply in specific cases.

in reply to Parker Banks

@parker there could be open standards like DKIM and SPF for email that don't reveal personal info, but upstream providers could use to validate traffic from an IP address originated from a human.

there are obvious downsides to this though for anonymous VPN users for example cause it requires some form of KYC and could cause anonymous human traffic to be throttled or blocked more easily, so i think we should proceed carefully with anything like this. there are some obvious potential benefits though in terms of blocking bots

In Latest Empty Promise, Apple To Announce Another $100 Billion Investment In US Manufacturing

The reality is manufacturing takes time to set up and develop. China ws a good place for Apple to assemble their phones. I suppose India was an alternate to hedge their China bet. All is good and everyone is happy. Apple stock is doing well.

Now the rules change. It could take a year to build a new plant, presuming you already have the property and logistics worked out.

PACER systems will undergo maintenance on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 6:55 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET. As a result, certain portions of this site may be temporarily degraded during the maintenance window.

Jail and prison are often used interchangeably as places of confinement. If you want to be specific jail can be used to describe a place for those awaiting trial or held for minor crimes, whereas prison describes a place for criminals convicted of serious crimes.

They say human behavior is highly predictable. Even at macro level general behaviors can be predicted in a society. But it can be much more accurate the more you know about an individual.

Guvament manufactured crises to provoke the public into accepting planned solutions was bad enuff. Now imagine it done much more efficiently down to the micro, individual level through mass surveillance and AI. Not nice.
