Libro.fm is the best. Anything I want to read by audiobook that my library system doesn't have with Libby, they have had it.
Audiobooks are how I get in like 95% of my reading, usually while accomplishing something else. When you get all grown up it gets hard to find time to sit down with a book, as much as I want to.
I've been going through the Sale category at libro and have picked up some real great stuff there. Way better than audible.
I like audiobooks sometimes for the narrator, like when the author has a great voice and is reading their memoir, etc.
I play them now instead of podcasts when I'm in the kitchen making breakfast, or when I'm grinding some stupid quest in a video game. For many non-fiction books, I like epubs for highlighting. Harder to do in audio.
I consume 80% of my books via audio and unfortunately it’s a very bougie lifestyle. I wish more audiobooks were available from my local library network as I can readily listen while doing shopping or travel chores when a book would be unavailable.

I and my 200+G Audiobook collection feel seen ... thank you. I would add that Audiobooks are great for long walks, shopping, train rides, laundry and habitat maintenance. But you can also just have a nice bed time story. Pro tipp: get a player with a sleep function like stopping when there was no movement for 15,30,45 minutes so you just have to rewind a small amount the next day. Waterproof headphones do work for showers and swimming but your milage will vary here.
All true. I'd like to point out that the M4B files are also DRM free with a wide variety of capable players and are far superior IMO. Single file with chapters and chapter names in metadata and better sounding at similar bitrate and size. Much easier to manage a library without dozens of files per book.

At any given time, I have an audiobook and an ebook, sometimes even a physical book too, on the go. Both fiction and non-fiction. I don't think the listening experience is any "less," provided you are concentrating and not just using it for background noise. Same as print reading really: if you're not paying attention, it's best to go do something else and come back to it later when you are in the mood.

This is good news (not an audiobook person as a rule but I have yarred one or two where I like the author well enough to buy it if I can not touch Amazon) but I'm kind of curious as to how it can work given Amazon is a rapacious quasi-monopoly. The price-point for membership is exactly what Audible had for nearly a decade, except initially Audible also offered a newspaper or magazine of your choice. That part went away.

It's interesting because Audible's excuse for not doing DRM-free is that the publishers want it that way. Or at least I think that's their excuse.
I use the uncreatively named "Listen Audiobook player". You can queue books, and set up sleep mode, which is my favorite feature. Mostly it just works, without getting in your way or forcing you through menu's.
But these days there's so much other audio content -- I have 114 hours in my podcast queue!
The only real downside to Libro.fm is that there's lots of audiobooks that they don't have.
I know this from personal experience, as someone with a massive audible library, and who's trying to move to Libro.fm.
Indie authors often just publish to audible and never end up in Libro.fm, or in many cases only a few of their books end up there. Then there's the issue that audible have "exclusives" - a monopoly in other words.
HOWEVER! There's good news. You can in fact ASK your favorite authors to get their audiobooks on there. I did send an email to "pirateaba", a writer of a super-awesome huge series called "The Wandering Inn".
Many of their books are audible exclusives, but I just checked and the author has got their first book out on Libro.fm. It's the first book, "Gravesong", in a spin-off series called "The Singer of Terandria"
Not only valid, but in some cases the best way. Take Paradise Lost, Milton was blind when he composed it and for some it is a work most richly engaged with in a spoken form.
As a long time, and very happy, Libro.fm user - I wholeheartedly endorse every word of this recommendation. If you're looking to purchase audiobooks, they're a fantastic Audible replacement PLUS you can choose to support local bookshops with each purchase!
@antifuchs Sadly not a complete replacement for audible as it seems a lot of the work of for example John Scalzi - Starter Villain - and Andy Weir - Artemis - are missing. Personally i think the plus of downloading and “owning” the content might outweigh that.

They have a separate subscription service if you want that provides credits for audiobooks, *but* you can also just buy the audiobook with cash, download it, and the files are yours.
@stevenlawson when I first started I was convinced I could only listen to audiobooks if they were autobiographies narrated by the author. I found a whole bunch fascinating. Then got a few recommendations here for other books and started to realize fiction only works with really great narration (for me anyway)

I love reading but since I started opioids for cancer, reading comprehension taxese enough extra effort to drain the fun out of it. I switched to audiobooks and it's great, especially with a full cast.

Arrest warrant applications against two senior Israeli ministers on apartheid charges are complete and currently with two deputy prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
If issued, the warrants for National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich would mark the first time the crime of apartheid is prosecuted at an international court.
