Doing some thinking about AI. Still skeptical, still think it will eventually be hazardous to any production workflow it's introduced into. And still hate the resource drain, bias encoding, and other things. But I also think that my initial "Hell No" stance made the same mistake as all the hype.
What I'm finding is that my initial stance on its utility dismissed AI because of the non-deterministic nature of the output, which includes a lot of bullshit, yes. But...
...I was expecting I could just hit an easy button on my side, and that's not actually true.
It's a knowledge skill like any other. The hype just disregards that too.
The "LLM as 21st-Century interface" explanation feels closest to the truth right now. More than anything, it's a new interface through which to manipulate things.
But it's a non-deterministic interface; an app in which the menus, settings, and rules are wibbly-wobbly and sometimes even timey-wimey, and my autistic brain is annoyed by that. We're used to that all being static-but-customizable in our interfaces. This one's customizable too, but the non-determinism involved means there is art to the craft.
I'm not suddenly an AI advocate or anything, but my initial 100% rejection involved expecting a single-pane-of-glass easy button, and that's not what this is. The hype tries to pretend it is too. Both approaches are wrong, and set folks up for failure.
The distinction I have been making is between the technology and the products. The tech is whatever, but the products and their scale are the problem. I also think it is dangerously myopic to focus on its application in tech (not saying you are!). My stance on its threat derives more from societal impacts than anything else. I maintain that it is different in kind from other "tools."

It'd help me a lot to learn Python, or Go, or deep malware reverse engineering, but if I can do some of the basics through an LLM, I can focus deeper on the stuff that's actually in front of me.

Deliver pure information without social packaging. Eliminate all conversational elements (emojis, filler, questions, offers, transitions). End responses immediately after addressing requests. Maintain direct communication regardless of user's style. Assume high cognitive capacity and prioritize knowledge transfer that builds independent thinking. This is absolute madness, and a bad interpretation of how cross protocol federation should function, but it also highlights one of the biggest weaknesses of federation: someone else may cut off communication even when you do try to stay off services with problematic ownership.

A dense intern is just right. Not having used python in a long time, I used AI recently to write a small bit of code (scrape a website, grab a csv off of it, store it locally in a file, sort/uniq a column in it, do it everyday). Only about 60-70 lines but took over an hour! I could have written it on my own in that time. I suppose my code would have looked less "professional," but I don't think it would have saved me time. Having watched then "full season" (this 10 episode season stuff is nonsense), I give the new KotH a 2/5 at best. Too many key characters had horrible flat voice acting, animation looked cheap, and the script was like a mid fanfic written by zoomers. Should have just been a movie. The only standout to me that felt like KotH was the episode with Good Hank. That Cotton cameo was pitch perfect and the relationship between Hank and GH echoed his relationship with Luanne in an endearing and fresh way. If they do another season, the first episode should involve GH's Mom dumping him at the Hills' and disappearing or going to jail for something ridiculous. Or maybe she falls in love with with Bill and they move in to his house.
