I don't know why but I never looked at the illumos based operating systems. I think I will change that and try out either OpenIndiana or SmartOS and compare them with Linux and BSD.

Areas I want to compare:
- Availability of software
- Simplicity of system management
- General system usage
- Security and Storage features

Are there any illumos users or admins out there with an idea on which things I should try out?

Cats knew that computers would lead to our downfall from the start and tried to warn us. They sat on the keyboards so we couldn't talk to the machine, they whacked the mouse out of our hands, they sat on PC base units to jam up the equipment with their shed fur. But we didn't listen and now here we are, wondering if the computers are going to destroy everything. Cats know computers can't open doors and cans of food for them otherwise I don't think they'd care so much.

[…] Since my arrest, the police and prosecutor’s office have fuelled the myth that we are dangerous to society, unscrupulous and ready to kill, with false allegations, such as the alleged discovery of explosives in my apartment – which they have never denied, although no explosives were found.

By insinuating that we were particularly dangerous, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office has created a militarized judicial framework.

The aim here is to revive and reactivate the memories and negative images of previous trials against RAF activists. This was already evident enough in Celle and is further underlined here in Verden-Eitze by the Rambow-like transport and the heightened security measures.

Even if the court wants to present itself as apolitical, it is the political context that determines this trial: the hostile image of the RAF and the enormity of having escaped the grip of the state for more than 30 years constitute the framework. […]

Hoxha is a Palestine activist who has been imprisoned for 9 months without trial in connection with the so-called Filton 24 case, the activist group accused of participating in an action against the site of leading Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems in Filton in April 2024. She has been on hunger strike at Peterborough Prison since August 11. Her demands are that she be able to return to her job at the library and receive all the mail she has not yet received. In addition, she has no medical follow-up, despite repeated requests from her relatives.

Spain: María José Baños Andújar Facing Medical Negligence


An anti-fascist prisoner of the GRAPO, María José Baños Andújar is in a critical state of health after several decades in prison. She needs a liver transplant and specialized care that she will only receive after her release. The prison administration not only denies her this care, but has recently restricted her access to essential medicines, thus accelerating her deterioration. This neglect of her health is not an isolated incident. It is part of a systematic policy towards political prisoners, where the denial of medical care becomes a tool of repression, as illustrated by the cases of Lucio García Blanco and Mónica Refoxos Pérez. In order to denounce this situation, her supporters are calling for letters to be sent to the director of the prison where she is being held (text and address here).

(This post is for non-Americans.) Folks, it's time to stop agonising over everything the Americans do, and focus instead on building a world that works without them. Let's accept that we can no longer rely on them for anything: trade, global security, aid, medical research, a model of democracy, tech innovation … anything.

Even if the U.S. somehow achieves peaceful democratic transfers of power in 2026 and 2028 — and there are many good Americans fighting hard for that — there''ll be years or decades of cleaning up and rebuilding shattered democratic institutions from the ground up. Write them out of the global script for now and move on.
