Disaster Strikes Again: Two Rescued, Four Found Drowned, Unknown Number Missing South of Lesvos
In the early hours of today, tragedy struck once more in the Aegean. A boat carrying an unknown number of refugees, travelling from Karaburun in Turkey towards the Greek island of Lesvos, capsized south of Lesvos.
The Turkish Coast Guard was alerted and launched a large-scale rescue operation involving a helicopter, a drone, a Coast Guard vessel, and five patrol boats. Several commercial ships were also called in to assist, including the Liberian-registered tanker Kriti Legende, the Portuguese container ship EF Elena, and the Turkish oil tanker T. Kilyos.
So far, two people have been rescued and four bodies recovered. The number of missing remains unknown. Due to the scale of the ongoing search-and-rescue operation, it is feared the death toll will rise.
