Doppler shifting is someone everyone whose ever heard a police siren knows: Higher pitch when it's coming toward you, lower pitch when it's going away. With light, higher pitch = blueshift, lower pitch = redshift.
A type of "weird" redshift is when you accelerate (e.g. in a dragster) and you emit light from the back of your dragster to the front, it shifts even though both emitter and receiver are going the same speed.
But it's kind of self-evident why this happens: The time it takes for light to get from one point to another is longer if they're moving with one in front of the other, because light can't go any faster than the speed of light, so it has more time to catch up to the moving target.
So the distance between two points IN LIGHT-SECONDS is greater if they're moving faster, well, if they're accelerating then the speed they're moving when the light leaves the emitter is less than the speed they're moving when the light hits the receiver, so you get classic doppler redshift because the distance changed while the light was in transit.
Tend to agree, all of the "wow spooky weird effects" I've encountered so far has been basically different versions of "light has a speed limit"... Which kind of reflects badly on the physics community for making things out to be more complicated than they actually are.

Man, we keep having accumulating archivist/librarian layoffs happening at major private universities, at OCLC, at state libraries/archives, etc. I feel like the archives-interested public is aware of what's going down in the federal government but there is very little awareness of how much it's spreading outside of the feds. This shit is so bleak. I really don't know what the future of the profession looks like and that scares the shit out of me.
Librarians are easily replaceable with cheap H1-b labor or part time students that restock shelves. Everything is computers now so overpaid roasties are not necessary.
Not at all to bear false comfort because things are pretty bleak employment-wise, but in a couple more years as LLMs chew up and excrete the entire digital corpus and people (are encouraged to) lose the skills to read, seek, and research on their own even in academic settings, I think those skills are going to be sorely needed.
