Degrowthers drive me nuts. In my experience, they almost always come from energy-rich societies and yet somehow romanticize poverty, like it's some kind of spiritual awakening. Contrary to what proponents of this philosophy may tell you, using lots of energy isn't inherently bad. In fact, energy abundance is the secret to human happiness and equality. We've already figured out how to grow economies without increasing emissions.

I think some degrowthers get capitalism's "burn the planet for some profit" model and the general "technological progress" thing conflated. There are nuanced positions but they tend to get drowned out. Clean energy abundance - 100% possible & a unnalloyed good. Using it to eliminate all forests so the whole world can eat beef? Not so much.
We have to have a large advanced manufacturing base to do anything except watch billions starve. We have to organise better.
