shoutout to Debian for its incomprehensible wall of text when booting fails lol
the reason boot dmesg was invented was so you could see where the boot failed. Then Linux fanboys shoved so much bullshit into the dmesg you could no longer see where it failed. So they invented systemctl and journalctl and whatnot to provide even larger 10000 line walls of text to scroll through. Some of them are helpfully coloured in red and orange to draw your attention to things which have absolutely nothing to do with the boot failure lol

Burnout recovery leave, day 5:
A few days without any goals was good
I played some games until I stopped enjoying them. I wrote a diary to /dev/null. I ate the plums that were in the refrigerator.
High allostatic load sucks, but guess who has a resting heart rate under 50 again?
Burnout recovery leave, day 6:
I'm meditating more than usual. At this point, it's not helping.
I'll probably end the next three months either with some new stupid human trick or a portable gaming device. Lenovo Legion Go S seems nice.
I used to meditate until I could feel arbitrary muscles or body parts. Then I'd meditate until muscle tension released. Then I'd meditate until I accepted that the chaotic color swirls and patterns when I close my eyes would never stop moving (probably because of tinnitus+synaesthesia).
I realized this week that the good meditation stopping point these days consistently coincides with when I can feel the tension and vibrations from my creaky fingers. I don't have arthritis but I am likely heading that direction.

Burnout recovery leave, day 12:
I had a massive fatigue spike for the past 6 days, with some hypotheses but no clear reason. I can't read a book or play a game for more than an hour without resting — and it was worse last week.
I hope this is temporary, because this sucks. I'm sure this was exacerbated by chronic stress and burnout but this wasn't caused by that.
#BurnoutRecovery
Burnout recovery leave, day 17:
Fatigue is slowly receding. It still feels like everyone around me is speaking in a foreign language, but at least the Bavarian countryside is very pretty
My interest in doing things is only barely starting to recover
Burnout recovery leave, day 26:
🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ Almost 4 weeks in now? I have some interest in reconnecting with friends, I tried a few new games, and I tried reading and writing.
Children of Morta is a roguelite, with great narration of a typical "find the source of the corruption" storyline so far, centered around a family of heroes.
Nona the Ninth continues to be bizarrely different from the previous two in the series. Reading nonfiction isn't terribly compelling right now, nor is writing.
I'll try some body doubling today.
I'm setting some goals for burnout recovery — regular sleep cycles, daily reading or meditation, and either daily writing or a social thing.
I'll start with twice a week as a goal, and see if that works.
Burnout recovery leave, day 28:
I wrote a page! I made some plans! I remembered some things that I love about what I do — e.g., supporting growth, synthesizing complex sociotechnical events, designing strategic plans that anticipate and address future challenges, and helping humans and organizations navigate context-sharing and decision-making around deep technical minutiae that are keystones for bigger challenges.
I started an extended thread on some nuances of burnout recovery:
infosec.exchange/@saraislet/11…
I have extended thoughts on a few nuances of burnout, resilience, and employment Before taking time off for burnout, my skip manager reminded me to read the strongly positive 360 feedback from my reports.Infosec Exchange
Burnout recovery leave, day 33:
🫠 I want to do things now.
…
…
…
🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ well at least therapy will be productive this week
Burnout recovery leave, day 40:
I did basic house chores today
which is not the burnout recovery plan I had for today, but sure, I did something useful so I'll call it a win
Burnout recovery leave, day 43:
I supported my wife, so I felt good about my contributions to the world today
Then I realized that my cat has done more to support my wife today, so I'm doing less for the world than my cat
But I fed the cat, so if I amortize my world contributions via keeping my cat alive to support my wife…
Burnout recovery leave, day 54 (8 out of 12 weeks):
It doesn't feel great not to have gotten any of the things I wanted to get out of leave — but I'm coming to accept that I got other things out of it.
I didn't fix any health issues (actually I gained some thanks to a tick and Lyme disease 😅) — but I ruled out some issues that I don't have.
I didn't improve my mental or emotional health skill set — but I reinforced which skills and practices are working for me, and which I am not currently finding useful (ugh, CBT).
I didn't discover any helpful habit or environment or structure changes — but I reinforced the value of a regular sleeping & eating schedule.
I didn't read or play anything particularly good, and I didn't get any useful home maintenance/improvement done. We really need curtains in the office : /
I wrote about 3 useful pages
The purpose of taking leave from work is to recover from burnout, not to write or hang curtains. However, doing things like writing and hanging curtains theoretically helps with recovery, and also serves as a signal of recovery.
Not having to do neurodivergent masking, camouflage, or compensation every day in the workplace is super helpful for recovery. Autistic burnout is often conflated with typical burnout — and I'm experiencing both.
So am I recovering from burnout? Yes and no. I think I'm heading in the right direction, but there are some other things I need that I won't share publicly.
I have had a really good experience with DBT which is related CBT (CBT is also solid) and I find it very practical dbt.tools
I had two burnout recovery days and didn't get everything I wanted done but in the end I think the goal is just not working too much so good job 💙
Some people I've known have found benefits from DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) even more than or in addition to or alternative to CBT.
SMART goals helped for me when I took 12 weeks of short term disability for addiction recovery. It's just the smallest things that I keep track of getting accomplished during one day, or even smaller or larger measurable time periods.
you will get there.
like any chronic injury, burnout takes longer to recover from the longer you took to start that recovery.
I read some review online saying Orange Pi has better OS support for its boards than Radxa. But so far this has not been my experience 🙂
Official OrangePiOS (arch) hdmi output does not work after updating system. Official Debian OS does not boot anymore after less than 12 hours use.
I am giving unofficial Slackware a go. There's an unofficial Ubuntu image on github I can try if Slackware is too painful/unstable.
Luckily i'm on annual leave and have a lot of tinkering time atm ☺️
My old Radxa RockPi4b+ worked out if the box with its official Manjaro image. So far I would recommend Radxa over Orange Pi.

Ainda acho overkill, mas melhor que só proibir tudo
