About 20 years ago I was awarded 25 of the tiniest opals imaginable.
To the non discerning eye they just looked like nicely smoothed dark stones but I was told they were 'Australian Black Opals' from Lightning Ridge N.S.W.
Only recently had I thought to hold them up to the light: And when I did, I saw they had the most lovely glints of crimson.
Loose Australian Black Opals with Gem colour and a 'named' pattern are 5000x rarer than diamond. (Ref: Australian Opal Cutters.)
