This is coconuts. I was using PirateShip, an app for buying and managing mailing labels. When I entered the window for printing a label, a dialog box popped up asking me if I wanted the document summarized by AI. The document, to be clear, was a mailing label that I was in the process of printing.
I don't think this is PirateShip's fault. They are using Adobe Acrobat to format their labels, and it would appear that Adobe got their AI bloatware to blorp up a dialog box in PirateShip's app.
I'm interested what the actual incentive for them to do this is. Are they just trying to seem up-to-date or are they using it to train new LLM models or something?
I just learned from @lopalasi about how Leibniz discussed calculus while corresponding with his benefactor. I had a very similar argument with my local tax authorities just this week. The guy said that someone could claim something based on my details. Never mind that that could still only benefit me. It's insane.
If it were just you, it might not be a problem. It's a whole system with every taxpayer in it. This Q the AI-driven fraudsters pay a little, and next year-ish they monitor for, or just file for big refunds and sluice a few thousand of those to, say, an expertly masked Russian crypto.
It's not really _that_ your gov't data is out there, it's the myriad of possibilities of its uses.
