I'm starting to read Physics From The Edge by Mike McCulloch (attached).
It provides a very nice history of physics which I was mostly unaware of. And I realize that it doesn't necessarily matter if McCulloch's theory of Quantized Inertia is "right", but rather how predictive is it and how accessible is it?
Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics has supplanted Newtonian physics, but people still use Newtonian physics every day - because Newtonian physics is just way more accessible. You don't need to compute the behavior of particles in a quantum vacuum to know how fast a ball is going to roll down a hill. You could, and it would be super exact, but it's a pointless exercise.
I kind of see Quantized Inertia the same way - maybe it only explains 75% of what the standard model explains, but if it gives you a way to form an intuition about something like the Casimir effect without needing to compute the difference of different magnitude infinities, that makes the difference between having some ability to reason about its behavior and being entirely at the mercy of The Lords of Mathematics.
Physicists who are more comfortable with the standard model may insist that a model can only be either right or wrong - and using the wrong model just makes wrong results. But General Relativity rejects Conservation of Energy, the exact law that these same physicists will cite if anyone claims perpetual motion. I am often annoyed when I put in a long password and the website throws an alert that I am limited to 20 character passwords (or sometimes even less!). But every once in a while a website will not alert me that the password is too long and just truncate it, and then I just have to guess why my new password isn't working 🤦♀️
@nicholas an abnormally long password does not give security benefits if the service has reasonable security in the first place. of your account gets locked after 10 attempts, it does not matter. on the database side, if the hashing algorithm is modern, it does not matter either whether it's 10 or 20 characters of plain text.
@nicholas there is no excuse for storing anything more than a fixed length hash. Any max length requirements make me suspicious that passwords are being stored in plain text. Sadly this is a common practice with financial institutions and healthcare it seems.
It's not good, but there are cases where you want to use a challenge / response:
1. Server sends a random number 2. Client sends the hash of the password with the random number 3. Server hashes the password with random number and compares
This requires the server to have the plaintext password, and there are implementation of this in LDAP and similar systems, which I imagine companies with too much money would be using as their authentication backend...
Yes, but I can easily imagine a bank or healthcare company sending your password through 3 layers of middleware before ending up on some Java app talking to an LDAP server, that uses plaintext...
