i think there's a degree in between. no, maybe the content isn't fully public, but it's also not secure. i don't think it's invalid to say it's "insecure" semantically. admins having access to all messages is disqualifying from a security standpoint.
but it's also a matter of intent, too. fedi is not intended to be a secure platform, and I agree it's a little overblown to make panic over it being insecure. it is worth making folks aware that there is no measure to maintain security in this way, though, so that they don't accidentally disclose sensitive information in a location under false expectations.
if security and privacy are needed, that's where things should move to secure messaging platforms, such as signal or encrypted xmpp.

you'd be surprised how frequently something like this comes up as if it's a bad thing. it's good digital literacy to know where the boundaries are, and to understand at what point your systematic security stops and trust in your platform owners starts. i think it actually is something people probably think about more here because each of us is a lot fewer steps to the person who houses that information.

Log Garage test video I'm taking a daily photo of the #LogGarage build #project. This is just a test to see if I can get the photos to all line up and make a video out of them. I started this project on 9/13/2025. I missed one or two days, but I'll do better.
I attached a camera mount to my carport so that the photos would all have the same angle/field of view/etc., but these "smartphone" #cameras still change the field of view and #focus and #exposure on their own - they think they are doing you a favor. It made it really hard to line up all the photos - even though they were taken from a stationary screwed-down camera mount. After searching around for a few days online, I found a program called #Hugin that lines them up #mathematically / #algorithmically and does a batch of photos. It's quite complicated, but the results speak for themselves. much better than I could do on my own.
Anyway, I'm anticipating this build to take at least a year, so that will produce a video about 365 seconds long - just over 5 minutes. Here's a 22 second clip (22 days) as a sneak peek for now - when the logs start getting stacked it'll look much cooler.
