Christmas 2006 was the first year I actually considered getting a "Big Flat Screen" TV. I ended up getting a Vizio GV42LF LCD with an LG S-PVA LCD panel in 2008 for $800 onsale during School Tax Holiday (normally $1200). Took me a year to understand the market.
By 2006 Panasonic was a leader in the plasma display tech. I remember drooling over their professional models which lacked speakers and tuners...and could be scored for less money.
Panasonic also made a 37" plasma which was smaller than the typical 42". Plasma tech was more difficult to miniaturize, than LCD and more costly to make smaller with high resolution.
