@aral At my (former) university, departmental funding was tied to increase in enrollment semester on semester. In other words, the incentive was to give everyone As. No need to teach anything. It _did_ make grading easier.
@aral i peaced out of academia after a disaster of a PhD program and finding out the horrendous working conditions for modern professors. i joked to people that i felt like i had been trained to drive a hackney cab long after cars had been in widespread use.
hackney cab training programs/grad schools take on 1000s of students every year as cheap teaching labor for undergrads (i made $16,000 a year) and lie to them outright about job prospects to get them in the door & trap them
@aral Somehow I am beginning to suspect that "wokeness" might not actually be the most pressing problem of universities.
