Anoher fun fact for feeble German minds: there is no such thing as EC Karte :) It’s just a brand owned by Mastercard with no specific meaning or functionality . The Germany’s native bank card system is Girocard. Such cards are often dual system with either Visa V Pay or MasterCard (not Maestro anymore, it’s being phased out in Europe) functionality. You will sometimes find the EC logo on Girocard+Maestro cards, but again, it means nothing. Girocard system has its own logo.

Works quite well for people that don’t often use public transportation. For frequent travelers it’s not yet attractive because you cannot connect subscriptions. But they seem to be working on that.
