More or less yeah. Though back around 2013 or so, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised by how they designed their Mac AIO desktops, they actually were somewhat repair tech friendly.
The front glass was magnetically attached, so it only took a suction cup or two to start disassembly, and basic screwdrivers to remove the screen and get access to the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, DVD drive, etc.
And yes you could replace or upgrade parts as necessary, none of this newer soldered on storage shit they do these days.
I've lost a lot of respect for companies that solder on important parts that should rightfully be fairly easy to replace or upgrade.
Plus, now the big companies have taken to forcing encryption on the storage devices, effectively locking the drive to the system. Well isn't that just cute for the backup operator that's trying to recover your late grandmother's family photos...
I remember opening HyperCard on our Mac a couple of times when I was a kid. I didn't know what I was doing and couldn't really figure out what it was for.
HyperCard was basically the viewer/player for HyperCard stacks/files. HyperStudio was the program used to make them.
It was sorta kind of akin to making basic 'web page' like card presentations, but before the actual internet was a public thing, with images, text, programmable buttons to jump between cards, special effects for card transitions, etc.
I'm nostalgic for stuff like that, but I've never been able to find a pirated copy of HyperStudio to install into my old System 7.5.5 virtual machine ☹️

This is incorrect. The HyperCard application could both create and play back HyperCard stacks. It could also export them as stand-alone applications which people could use without needing to run HyperCard.

That is to say, HyperStudio has an extremely unique environment, and although it can create videos, presentations, animations and comic-style (graphic novel) digital stories, it is neither movie-making software, presentation software, and animation program, nor a comic-book maker. It is HyperStudio and no other program has ever duplicated or even successfully approximated its functionality.

Interesting. I only recall 2 programs when I took the HyperStudio class, where the HyperCard Player was free for all to use, but couldn't make projects.
HyperStudio was the paid program that the school had paid licensing fees to use, and as such we weren't allowed to copy that software.
Maybe I missed the original HyperCard itself, we were only allowed to copy and share HyperCard Player, which most definitely could not create projects, only play them.

The behavior that the r/accelerate moderator is describing got a lot of attention earlier in May because of a post on the r/ChatGPT Reddit community about “Chatgpt induced psychosis,”

For one thing it will run a lot of existing and proven Matlab code.
Another is that Octave and Matlab syntax is ambiguous about functions vs indexes (has pros and cons).
And don't get me wrong (I use jupyter and python a lot and really do like it) but numpy can get fundamentally weird in the way indexing maps to memory in ways that I don't remember happening back when I mostly used Octave.
For me the major advantage of python is having access to other non-numerical things. It's so difficult to do anything not-numerics in Octave and Matlab or to use even basic data structures like lists and trees. Python is sort of a basic object language that makes some of the things that would otherwise make you scream for Lisp possible. That's worth the numpy annoyances. Otherwise I would probably be using julia.
Oven has been a life saver for me. I've eaten a ton of meals that consisted of baked fries, some kind of meat or fish and vegetables, and it's as simple as putting a bunch of stuff on a tray, adding salt and baking it for 15-20 minutes. Easily beats most comparable microwave meals in terms of taste, texture and probably nutritional value, too.
I wouldn't call "throw some stuff in the oven and add salt" cooking. And either way it's vastly easier than working with pots and pans - you don't have to watch for pots boiling over or things turning black in the frying pan, and the clean-up is rather minimal, as well. Plus, pans tend to not that well with meat or veggies directly from the freezer (it's possible but harder, which is not great for the post's premise), which isn't even an issue when you use the oven instead.
Also, there's something about baking that makes food taste pretty consistently good, I've never managed that consistency on a stovetop. It's incredibly demoralizing when you put in the work to cook properly and it turns out shit.

I love this movie, but the audio mix kills me. One minute you are struggling to hear characters speaking and then your eardrums get blown out when they cut to the next fight starting. I do have tinnitus so I may be biased a bit.
The Suicide Squad from 2021. The previous Suicide Squad movie was a disaster and you're making ANOTHER ONE? That movie had no right to be as entertaining as it was.
Also The Batman. Comic book movie: check. Comic book character that has been done to death: check. Everything has to be grim and dark and realistic: check. When I say "everything has to be dark" I also mean the visuals: check. But it was fine, surprisingly.
The title alone makes it sound like a cheesy 80s goofy movie...and it kinda is. But the practical effects are right up there with The Thing. It makes you invested in the characters and the main conflict is really tough. It's more dark and gritty than you would expect, especially near the end. The werewolf transformation scene has some of the best practical effects in film. It's stomach churning.
Now I have four ways to get to the begining and end of a command line. I can press Escape,^ or Ctrl+a for the begining of the line, and Escape,$ or Ctrl+e for the end of the line.
Bit suss on the ctrl-A start of line, because vim binding is A for append which is end of line.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the commands would apply within the zsh, which is a bash alternative, not within the programmes running themselves?
Or are you saying its sus because its illogical/confusing to have opposite uses for tgebsame shirt cut? I can see that as people using a terminal and launching vim would constantly be working against "muscle memory" each time they switch which would be annoying! Being familiar with keyboard shortcuts is what can make terminal based workflows so fast.
It was a little strange in the "line movement" part they were talking about setting vim navigation on the cmd line and then putting Emacs style as aliases, of which I said it's a bit suss as it's too close to vim append.

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then? I'm not really clear on how communicating freely between them works. I understand that's how the Fediverse works, but I have a Mastodon account and I haven't sorted out any way to post on/read lemmy content with it, so I'm not sure what the integration actually means in practical application? Maybe someone could help me out.

Reis kaufe ich über einen Shop auf ebay mittlerweile als 10 Kilo-Sack. Spart Plastik, spart Geld, spart mir Wege zum Supermarkt... Ab und zu gebe ich der Familie was davon mit..
Vor ein paar Wochen kam mir ein weiterer Gedanke: Wie hirnverbrannt ist es, dass ich mir immer wieder aufs Neue Shampoo in diesen "kleinen", fancy Verpackungen kaufe, die man dann wegwirft, um neues Shampoo zu kaufen in einer neuen Plastikverpackung, die man dann wieder wegwirft?
Ich bin nun Besitzer eines 10-Liter-Kanisters Shampoo, das wahrscheinlich von Fitnessstudios oder Hotels gerne in diesen Mengen gekauft wird. Den Inhalt fülle ich einfach in 1-2 leere Fläschchen, die ich noch habe. Den Kanister werde ich danach draußen zum Blumen-Gießen nutzen. Aber auch ohne diese spätere Verwendung ist ein 10-Liter-Kanister wohl sinnvoller als 40x 250ml-Fläschchen... Und zwar ökonomisch und ökologisch, vor allem da es ein No-Name-Produkt ist, deren Werbekosten ich nicht mitfinanzieren muss...
Bin ich der Einzige, der größere Mengen von Dingen bevorzugt? Wie siehts bei euch aus?
Ich komme leider nicht dazu, in Läden zu fahren wo man sowas kaufen kann, und online bestellen frisst dann durch Versandkosten oft einen Großteil des preislichen Vorteils auf (außerdem adressiere ich Pakete nicht gerne an meine Haustür, und 10kg-Pakete sind schon etwas schlecht zu tragen vom nächsten Postshop).
Das gesagt, ich habe mir gerade ein halbes Jahr Vorrat an Melitta Filtertüten Größe 100 (für Handfilter) auf melitta.de gekauft. Hab kein Geld gespart, aber das gibt es selten im Laden zu kaufen und wenn doch, ist es oft schon ausverkauft oder nur noch eine Packung übrig. Ich habe auch den Eindruck, dass Melitta die 10x-Größen langsam ganz aus dem Programm nimmt, was kacke ist weil ich dann meine Filterhalter wegwerfen kann ...
I think I messed up ... Wanted to get a lot of files out of a nested folderstructure 3 levels deep and used mv /*/*/* ./ somewhere deep in my personal folders. I got a lot of errors and quick as I could stopped it. Now that folder is is messed up with a lot of stuff (see below) which I dont know the origin of. The good news: I have fairly recent backups
Questions:
Could they be from subdirectories in my home folder?
Could they be from subdirectories outside my home folder? Especially grubenv caught my eye.
Could it be potentially dangerous to reboot? I leave my PC on untill I know more.
Would it be possible to reverse the moving in some way, to put them back where they belong, even manually?
If ./ and ./*/*/* are both within your home folder, you should just restore it from your backup. The command you ran takes everything up to 3 levels deep and moves it up to the working directory, and unraveling that will be a pain in the ass.
I can't say because those paths are relative and I don't know your file structure. That said, even if I did, restoring from backup would take out all of the guesswork here so I would recommend that over trying to do it manually.
Like I'm not one of THOSE. I know higher = better with framerates.
BUT. I'm also old. And depending on when you ask me, I'll name The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as my favourite game of all time.
The original release of that game ran at a glorious twenty frames per second. No, not thirty. No, not even twenty-four like cinema. Twenty. And sometimes it'd choke on those too!
.... And yet. It never felt bad to play. Sure, it's better at 30FPS on the 3DS remake. Or at 60FPS in the fanmade recomp port. But the 20FPS original is still absolutely playable.
Yet like.
I was playing Fallout 4, right? And when I got to Boston it started lagging in places, because, well, it's Fallout 4. It always lags in places. The lag felt awful, like it really messed with the gamefeel. But checking the FPS counter it was at... 45.
And I'm like -- Why does THIS game, at forty-five frames a second, FEEL so much more stuttery and choked up than ye olde video games felt at twenty?
My favorite game of all time is Descent, PC version to be specific, I didn't have a PlayStation when I first played it.
The first time I tried it, I had a 386sx 20MHz, and Descent, with the graphics configured at absolute lowest size and quality, would run at a whopping 3 frames per second!
I knew it was basically unplayable on my home PC, but did that stop me? Fuck no, I took the 3 floppy disks installer to school and installed it on their 486dx 66MHz computers!
I knew it would just be a matter of time before I got a chance to upgrade my own computer at home.
I still enjoy playing the game even to this day, and have even successfully cross compiled the source code to run natively on Linux.
But yeah I feel you on a variety of levels regarding the framerate thing. Descent at 3 frames per second is absolutely unplayable, but 20 frames per second is acceptable. But in the world of Descent, especially with modern upgraded ports, the more frames the better 👍
Definitely give it a shot. It's obviously different, but I loved it. My mom actually banned me from playing descent 3: vertigo, because she had vertigo and it made her sick
Vertigo was actually an expansion on Descent 2, I made the NoCD patch for it via a carefully hex edited mod based on another NoCD patch for the original Descent 2.
Any which way, yeah, anyone with vertigo wouldn't be comfortable or oriented in any way if they're watching or playing the game, no matter what version.
@Count Regal Inkwell Most people can't honestly perceive any change in their visual field in less than 1/60th of a second except perhaps at the very periphery (for some reason rods are faster than cones and there are more rods in your peripheral vision) and even then not in much detail. So honestly, frame rates above 60 fps don't really buy you anything except bragging rights.
led lights almost always run off rectified, smoothed supplies, so no flicker. i have one cheap old crappy bulb that doesn't, and i can definitely perceive the flicker. it's almost nauseating.
@binom If you film with a camera with a ntsc vertical reference rate of 59.95 hz you will see a beat note between the lights and the led lighting indicating it is not well filtered if at all. If you have a newer HiDef camera, most of them work at a 24Hz refresh rate, that IS a slow enough rate that you see jitter in the movement, they also will have a beat note if recording under most LED lights. Many cheap led lights just have a capacitive current limiter and that's it. If you power them off of 50Hz you will see the flicker, if you get dimmable LED lights they will NOT have a filter. But I don't want to interfere with anyone's bragging rights.
I wouldn't know. Could never afford a posh high-refresh-rate monitor, and it's very low on my priority list, so even if/when I do get a windfall of money, it probably won't be what I buy next.

It wasn't a super long distance, about six blocks each way but it was unsupervised, and that was the norm back then. What has happened that it has become so dangerous that kids need to be bussed to school even if they're three blocks from the school?
Have you been to an American school recently? The elementary next to my house could be confused for a prison at first glance. It hasn't gotten bad, if anything it's actually safer than when we went to school. They have promoted a society of individuals ruled by fear.

My high school was open campus, and my Jr high we were at least allowed to leave during lunch. Different world today entirely. And I don't like it because it conditions people for 15 minute cities and other forms of tyranny.
Same. I vaguely remember some shooting happening my Jr. Year of HS. I wanna say Bowling Green or Paducah, KY. This was before Columbine. Columbine was my Freshman year at Transylvania University.

Those six blocks you used to walk have all had their lanes widened into stroads, one converted into a thoroughfare, and no attention was given to pedestrian infrastructure so crosswalks, sidewalks or bike paths are almost non-existent unless you're within 2 blocks of the school.
We have literally built most of our cities, or redesigned older cities that used to be pedestrian friendly and walkable, into a wasteland of asphalt and concrete designed exclusively for personal vehicles.
That sounds expensive. How many roads have such bike lanes? Hypothetically, if you wanted to replace a trip to the grocery store, how useful would they be?
@ebolapie They aren't. It's hard carrying six bags of groceries on a bicycle and not going to waste time and energy going daily. Hypothetically it would get me within half a mile of a grocery store I don't like, the one I do like is seven miles away.
Given the right bicycle it's pretty easy, but that's beside the point. The question is why don't people use bike lanes that seem pretty nice on the surface of it, right? There has to be a reason other than "bikes suck and nobody wants to ride them," because in some places people go everywhere on bicycles and they love it.
So what, really, is the main difference between those places and your town, if it's not the quality of the bike lanes?

15 minutes cities is just a concept that all or most of the typically important services citizens need to survive and thrive should be within a 15 minutes of where they live without REQUIRING a car. Modern car dependent culture is the tyranny if anything, and 15 minute cities idea is a response to that

I have literally never seen the idea of a 15 minute city being restrictive anywhere other than the ravings of Alex Jones tier wingnuts. Everybody who actually pushes the concept just thinks you should have a grocery store, a doctor's office, a library etc. near your house.
Edit: and don't get it twisted, nobody is saying you should be forced to relocate either, it's a guideline for urban planning.

If I wanted to go lay on the beach and enjoy the stars and the sound of surf at 2AM, I could so so, if I wanted to set off fireworks on the 4th of July I could so so, or pretty much any other time as long as I wasn't creating a nuisance. I could drive downtown on any street. Now beaches are closed after dark, no more fireworks, kind of funny that we don't have the freedom to celebrate our freedoms, but then the constitution may as well be used for toilet paper these days, downtown now half the streets are bus only and the other half are one-way. Wow, hot take. Do you know what a traffic filter is? It's just a restriction on through traffic, so that smaller roads aren't used as part of a route by people going longer distances. It in no way restricts the overall distance that people can travel. In fact it's less restrictive than some LTN implementations, since at least the road can still be traversed

Is it wrong to enjoy art made by bad people? I think it's a very complicated question and the answers will definitely have a lot of variation between people. What if it really is a good art? Or just enjoyable? Should everyone avoid it? People still listen music by Michael Jackson, for example, are they bad because of it?
My own approach is that qualities of what someone creates don't need to be inseparably tied to the personality or views of the author. Everyone can enjoy what they like without the obligation to find out details of the author and adjust their preference based on that. It's fine to make them aware of the problems, it's not fine to make them feel bad because they like something that is not wrong on its own. If you dislike the author enough for it to spoil their works for you, good for you. I also feel this way about some authors. But don't require it from other people.

At age 7, I got in trouble for 'acting out' when they gave all the students a basic eye chart test. When it was my turn, they put me on the measured out line and asked me to read the chart.

They called my dad in and between him, the teacher, and the principal, I got scolded for 'acting out'.
The next year, age 8, they assigned seats in order based off the first letter of our last names, which happened to put me in the back of the class. I couldn't see a damn thing on the chalkboard...
So my parents finally had to take me to a proper eye doctor. They found out my vision was like -4.5, which is extremely nearsighted.
So I finally got glasses, and about 2 weeks of apologies from my mom. Every time she apologized, I reminded her that she had absolutely nothing to apologize for, I was just thankful I could finally see!
I never got an apology from my dad, the teacher or the principal though. It's a bit fucked up that they could have caught it earlier on when the whole reason they gave students the basic eye test was literally to catch obvious vision problems early on..
To be fair, your dad was probably just as scared of your teacher. Same with the principal.
If I hadn't had a dad who was a school counselor in my district used for all the worst problem kids I think I would have had a different experience. I wasn't a bad kid, but I was a weird one. As a result I got to see behind the curtain a little and think office politics plays a bigger part of why kids get in trouble than anything else (well, except actual parent involvement and how you raise your kids). Now that you mention this I think I'll take my youngest to get her eyes examined just to be safe.
Nah, if you knew my dad at the time, he insisted there was nothing wrong with my vision. I actually was already a pretty intelligent kid, mostly from book learning at the time.
Book learning worked great for me, but only because the book was close to my face, which works fine for nearsighted people. So my dad was convinced, my vision was fine.
I was disappointed at my dad for quite a few years, but ultimately had to let my anger go.

I've been testing this OS for a bit, but I'm having trouble where drives are shutting down prematurely, as if the power management is too aggressive when it comes to external USB drives.
My USB hard drive will shut down on whatever timer Linux is using, despite my VirtualBox machine actively using it via Shared Folders. I have to use the Linux host and Caja to wake the drive back up. Like what the hell?
My USB DVD drive will spin up stupid fast to buffer a lot of DVD video, then Linux spins the drive down and turns it off. Then the next time it needs data, the drive has to spin up stupid high speed again, causing the video to freeze frequently while the drive spins back up, way too fast no less for the task. Why not a simple consistent speed and keep the drive running while watching a movie? VLC if that matters, on the host Linux.
Is this a power management configuration issue? Are these somehow the same issue, or are they two separate issues?
@over_clox You are most welcome. This is one aspect I love about Linux, damned near everything is adjustable. Those adjustments aren't necessarily well organized, but they are usually there, somewhere...

I am a Linux beginner but I really enjoyed it so far. So far. Since yesterday, my Linux (pop OS) only wants to boot into emergency mode. I have a suspicion, even though my Linux and Windows are located on different physical disks, somehow Windows does it's toxic ex lover things and somehow broke my Linux I assume. It's there a terminal command to somehow reorganise my boot files?
@Rubanski If it's booting into emergency mode, there are usually one of three issues, kernel is corrupt, a file system can not be mounted read/write, and this can be because of file system corruption or in the case of mdraid, because a raid device failed to self-assemble, or initramfs is broken. The easy way to fix most of these is to use an automated utility called boot repair, you download the ISO then burn to a thumb drive, then when you run into this kind of problem boot off the thumb drive. I'd start by trying to determine which of these it is, if you get into emergency mode then you at least have a shell prompt, try typing dmesg to see if there are any errors relating to the kernel, then check if all of the partitions are mounted and if they are all mounted read/write. If one or more is mounted read only this usually means that the automatic fsck found errors it can not fix and needs a manual run, in which case try fsck -f -y /dev/sdxx or /dev/nvmexnxpx, which ever the case may be (hard drive verses SSD). If this was the issue after the fsck successfully repairs the file system you should be able to boot successfully. If not, and nothing kernel related shows up in dmesg, then probably your initramfs has gotten hurt. In this case since you are new to Linux, boot repair is the easiest way to fix it. You can also fix manually but that is more complex, however if you need instructions on how to do this let me know and I will elaborate. Even doing so manually though requires another bootable Linux media, does not have to be boot repair, a popos install USB will also do.
@just_another_person @Rubanski On most modern systems neither Windows nor Linux is going to hurt each other's boot record because usually on a dual boot system you're going to launch grub out of the boot block which is going to them find and mount the UEFI partition which is a fat-32 partition usually mounted on /boot/efi by Linux, and then grub is going to continue from a directory within /boot/efi, windows similarly will have a directory there, and grub if it finds both will present a menu at boot. Since both use separate directories on this UEFI System partition, one should not interfere with the other unless the partition is too small and you run out of disk space. I usually size my EFI partition at 512MB and that's always been more than sufficient for multiple operating systems. If you re-install WIndows, it will overwrite the boot block with it's own boot loader, but restoring it with grub will you back to where you were. If you are a real glutton for punishment, you can setup the Windows boot loader to chain load grub, this works as I have actually done it, more as a matter of curiosity than anything else. But I prefer to use Grub as the first boot loader as it's faster and less prone to exploding.
Do you have any drives/ partitions set up to load at boot other than the main linux partition?
A common issue can be if linux is trying to mount a partition specified in fstab (the config file that lists all the hard drives to be loaded) and it can't mount it, it will go into emergency mode. It does this as it assumes the drives are critically important and to prevent any damage to your system. You can mark non essential partitions as "nofail" in the fstab file so that linux continues to boot even if those partitions are unavailable.
If you'd added a USB drive or another hard drive to auto mount at start up and its not available to linux then that might be the issue. Reinsert those drives and linux should boot. Alternatively you can login using emergency mode and edit the fstab file yourself if you know what youre doing. The offending drive can be removed/commented outthe fstab file or the nofail option added.
If your linux install is set to mount your windows C: partition (for file access in linux for example) then its important to know the drive can be locked out by windows. Windows "fast startup" is a very common cause - it basically means windows doesnt shut down fully, it does a fake shutdown (hibernates), and doing this locks down the drive, preventing any access to the C: drive including in linux. If this scenario applies to you, boot into wndows, disable fast startup in the control panel and then try to reboot into linux.
It this works it is still worth using the "nofail" option in fstab for any non essential drives. I personally dont auto mount my windows drive at all anymore; I have it visible in my file manager but manually mount it (just clikcing on it does it) when I need it.
@Rubanski if you have mdraid partitions, you also should add bootdegraded=true to the grub command line so the system will still boot even if a disk fails and an array is in the degraded mode.
While I agree with your assertion in theory, I cannot agree that windows doesn't mess with grub. I have had 5 different issues with grub being overwritten, 1 was because windows and Linux were on the same drive, but the other 4 was simply because I launched windows through grub.
My advice for people dual booting is to never launch windows through grub and instead change your boot order in bios, this has made all of my boot related issues go away.
@Attacker94 The boot block pointing to grub is what gets overwritten, grub itself in /boot/efi doesn't. You can fix either though with either boot repair or boot from a usb thumb drive, mount the partitions on /mnt and subdirectories,mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev, /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts, and then mount --rbind /proc /mnt/proc and /sys /mnt/sys, cp /etc/resolv.conf to /mnt/etc/resolv.conf, chroot to /mnt, and then grub-install /dev/sda or whatever the drive is. Not a big deal. And this only happens if you install Windows AFTER you have installed Linux.

Pardon my ignorance, but why people keep trying Linux phones when you can develop on top of open source android version, like GrapheneOS? Linux desktop apps are not exactly secure.
I can't talk for others I'm personally interested in Linux phones (I have 2, PinePhone and PinePhone Pro) because I do not want to rely on Android because it's lead, maintained and basically in practice owned by Google.
I would also much prefer to have "just" Linux because I know it better and because IMHO we reached a point, already few years ago, where "mobile" does not mean much anymore. "just" a computer with a battery is enough due to the power available.
IMHO the SteamDeck is the existence proof of that.
The "know it better" is, I think, a big argument, that's imo often a bit overlooked. Android does not have that much "tinkers" as "proper" Linux has. For the average Gnome DE @ Ubuntu user, Android forks are fine. But if you're the kind of person, who optimizes their Arch system with cool scripts from Github, you won't get the same experience on LineageOS. I know Termux is a thing but that feels more like a workaround.

Edit2 to clarify my point: I think big downside of Android is that if you want to tinker with it, you basically have to be an android developer. With "proper" Linux the barrier to entry is smaller and the learning experience is more granular. Hence why we think "we know 'proper' Linux better".

Also it looks like an ok phone, low spec cameras, but still the usual dimensions, OLED, enough RAM & CPU to be usable in desktop mode, Linux.

They’re a huge contributor to the ecosystem and have done a lot of practical good, but I also think the community will turn on a dime if the suits overstep into FAFO territory.

The CLI interfaces for PA and SysD are janky/verbose af and make it hard for beginners to do simple things as well. E.g. try wiring up a virtual device with pacmd that fuses your desktop audio and mic output into a combined source using only the man pages, or putting together a fresh service from memory without looking up any directives.
E: even better example, compare how easy it is to set something up to run in cron vs. a systemd timer.
Isn't RedHat who pushed systemd? Most init enthusiasts hate systemd ! Dunno if related tho. I'm just recently into linux so I never had the chance to give the init system a try !
However, I'm an opensource and free from corporate shit software lover. Try to avoid everything related to corpo (Redhat, Ubuntu...). That's exaclty the reason why I'm reluctant to give Fedora a try, even tough it seems kinda a good distro !

No. Look at IBMs stock value history. There is a pretty clear point at which Remini stepped down and they really started to see the benefits of Red Hat. Nearly all IBM profit comes from Red Hat. They were drowning and their pivot to cloud was failing. With Red Hat they've been able to actually get a presence in the cloud with OpenShift.
That would be such a bizarre way to interpret that. They weren't even direct competitors. VMware, Oracle, and SUSE would be better comparisons for that move. And it seems to bear repeating that Red Hat is something like 30% of IBM's revenue. Why would you kill off a third of your income?
Why not? Until they have cornered distribution of the software they can't Extinguish yet. EEE isn't an instant process, it takes time. Crush all other distribution first and then killing it comes next.

@just_another_person I've been using Linux in a commercial setting since 1991 when you had to compile you're own kernel and userland, and I am using it commercially today, so no I am not an amateur user. Ad hominem attacks don't benefit anyone.
I mean, systemd-networkd and systemd-timesyncd are both completely independent and are not required by systemd. I use connman and chronyd on my arch box and systemd gives not one fuck.
There's still some totally valid concern to be had over how bundled a lot of this stuff is, but it's not all one big blob.

In particular systemd-resolvd is an issue because it enforces the 512 byte limit on txt records. The problem with doing this is many large sites have spf records longer than 512 bytes and fail to break them up into separate txt records, so if you enforce this limit and they initiate mail from one of the truncated hosts, it gets rejected. This is not good and so I've worked around this by disabling networkd-resolvd and installed bind9 instead. I've actually had no problem with timesync but why re-invent all the wheels? To me it seems Poettering is a control freak and wants to take over my systems.
Rock Linux isn't "stealing" anything. They make a exact RHEL clone for those who want absolute RHEL clone. Almalinux on the other hand is just trying to be comparable with RHEL software and tools. It is very similar to RHEL but they do things like fix issues faster. Some people are weary of Almalinux do to its ties to cloudlinux although that might not matter to you depending on who you are.

I'm pretty sure Alma had a way to upgrade major releases. I know RHEL has Leapp, but it is always recommended to do a greenfield reinstall. Although with image mode and ostree that is changing.
Fuck Rocky. They are a leech on open source. They break user agreements to get at Red Hat source and don't contribute upstream. Use Alma, they actually work with the community and contribute upstream.
Because CIQ, the company that bankrolls Rocky, was poaching Red Hat customers. They were hiring Red Hat sales people, then using their contacts to swoop in and drastically undercut Red Hat because they don't do any engineering. It is an effort to stop leeches like CIQ/Rocky.
I don't see the problem with that. Red Hat is bankrolled by IBM. I don't have any qualms about them facing competition, even underhanded competition which I don't think this is. Contributing to open source doesn't and shouldn't guarantee financial compensation, customers, whatever.
So, you're okay with one company taking another company's work, contributing nothing to it themselves, then hiring company A's employees, and finally taking company A's customers? Not even Oracle was slimy enough to do that.
IBM does not bank roll Red Hat. Red Hat acts and reports independently of IBM.

They can do original work or they can build on others, if they do the latter then they have to expect the same.
Right, I think you're basically saying what I think most of us would agree with. Don't just copy the homework and poach customers. You can copy the homework and add your own value to it and earn customers. Bonus points for adding that value add back into the community like Alma does with their HPC work.
I think systemd has moved desktop and server Linux towards being more BSD-like ... and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.
Maybe we'll end up needing an X11 -> Wayland sort of transition where there are protocols instead of "an implementation."
However, I've yet to see systemd be meaningfully detrimental. Are distros a little less different? Yeah. Has it made my life easier when I need to go between distros? Also, yeah.
I think on some level, we're just getting to a more mature Linux desktop and server ... and as a result consolidating on stuff that really doesn't have strong reasoning to be different.
To be honest, stuff not working when it breaks the standard is unfortunate, but I wouldn't blame this on the tool that adheres to said standard.
You're not inconvenienced by systemd-resolvd, you're inconvenienced by those mail sites doing stuff that doesn't work, possibly as a result of them needing to do something that was slightly flawed to begin with: using DNS records to possibly hold more data than they can per the spec, which, if I understand things correctly, is because of the limitations of UDP traffic.
Not that that helps you, of course, it's annoying and I recognise that.
@dnzm Some of us live in the real world where we have customers that expect to receive their e-mail and aren't interested in the details of a standard, and since prior to systemd this was not an issue, I see no benefit to making an issue. UDP packets can be any arbitrary length up to 65535 bytes (including the header), there is no sound reason for limiting them to 512 bytes.
I, too, live in this fabled real world, and I already mentioned I understand your issue. I just think you're barking up the wrong tree, but luckily you're able to work around things, and that's the most important bit, isn't it?

I'm all for Linux distributions run and owned by the community. With those we don't have to be afreaid of weird business decisions. Debian is a good example, and very democratic. But I believe several other distros are maintained by a community as well, including Arch, NixOS...

You know, "keyboards"? Those things that people on DESKTOPS use? - All phones look the same. All laptops look the same. It's boring as hell. - Laptops must be as thin and flimsy as possible. Maybe I'm paranoid but it also seems very insecure. I've been to some restaurants where they have the menu as a qr code and you even pay for your food from the website. What's to stop a bad actor from creating a fake version of your website and stealing card data? They just need to create a qr sticker and put it on top of the one on the table.

Also you can't force an app to close for real and not access the internet to do heaven knows what, unless you install specific apps to force close them and control them, which most people won't do since they don't even realize that an app is not really closed when they close it...

Rounded corners. Everywhere. They lose so much space, especially on small screens, and everything feels crammed.
No personalization anywhere. You used to be able to completely customize social media profiles, to the point of editing your page's CSS directly.
Modern OSes (except linux or BSD based ones which are not android) also have no color or personalization. You usually have the slabs of white on light mode, or the slabs of blak on dark mode, with only one color you can choose for some details.
JavaScript animations on every. Single. Website. I have an old phone (because I don't like modern stuff), and it struggles with almost every modern, animated site. Is it really necessary to add all that js and animations?
No headphone jacks or expandable storage on modern phones. It probably costs cents to add those features. I know phones don't usually have expandable storage because it makes you buy a new one once you fill all your storage, and I know they don't have audio jacks because it makes you buy the company's wireless headphones, but I need those features in my phone.
Why does everything have to be a web app now? Have people forgotten about actual softwate, that you own, that doesn't need internet to work, that uses almost no resources and is faster and has more features than a web app? We got everything backward. Sites that should be webs like reddit will ask you to download their apps, while microsoft will try to code Word in javascript and sell it to you as an "upgrade".
I hate subscriptions with passion, especially for software.
There's so much javascript everywhere... A few years ago I used to be able to browse the internet with the NoScript extension, and it only required a few allows now and then. Now NOTHING works without javascript, and each website needs you to allow 20 others websites for it to work...

I understand minimalism is getting stale, but the answer is not going for something hard to read. Even with proper hierarchy the sheer clash of colors, sizes, etc., will lead to a jumbled mess. Form follows function to make life easier.

Minimalist web design is making me miss the mess that was the old internet. The terrible designs with dozen of bright elements all assaulting your eyes, the blinking stuff everywhere giving you seizures, the ugly animated GIFs whose pixels you could count, the absence of any coherence for colors and text formatting... It was awful, but at least it was interestingly awful. Each website had it's own unique flavor of awful. Now it's convenient, but it's all the same flavor of boring and bland convenience.
I see your point, but... I don't know. Nowadays, attention is a prime commodity. The easier something is to consume, the more people it will reach. And while that doesn't matter as much in entertainment media, it has to be considered when designing for more important topics. Thus, media has to be designed to be read efficiently.
I don't love how media is designed nowadays, precisely because it is monotonous and boring often, but I don't long for the days when I had to look an entire page over for the bit of information I'm after. A balance can be struck through clear layout design and following trends that respect hierarchy. Maximalism does neither.
Though, I feel like I have to differentiate artistic media from informative media. Art can go bonkers, in fact art should challenge established tropes, but design should prioritize function over form, keeping in mind there is some room for aesthetics in there.
Again, I'm approaching this from an efficiency and ease of use point of view.
I do get the efficiency point, and it did improve accessibility massively. I don't want to downplay that. Like not having huge paragraphs of text take the whole width of the screen anymore helped improve readability a lot. Or pages of text over a background image... that was a nightmare. But it would be nice to have efficiency and accessibility without every website looking the same. There has to be a way to make websites look interesting without the design hindering users from reaching the information they want... But I assume that it would require a lot more effort, and that's not a priority for most websites. I guess the priority isn't to look interesting anymore but SEO? Maybe it comes from the changing nature of the internet, with big websites getting most of the traffic and replacing everything else? Like having markets with crazy stalls everywhere replaced by malls... I guess it's easier for a small website made by one person about a topic they are passionate about to take the risk of a creative design than it would be for Facebook to do it.
i have tried everything i could possibly think of, but Linux will not connect to the internet until i restart it. it doesn't matter what distro i use, it won't connect. on windows, it connects immediately, but only with fast start enabled. i have reset the router, the BIOS is up to date, and I've tried pretty much every solution i could find online. at this point i think it's a hardware issue, but I'd like to know if there's anything i can try before giving up on Linux until i get a new PC. any help is greatly appreciated!
Try finding out if it received an IP address, if the driver is loaded or if there are any error messages in dmesg. You might also want to give more information. Which ethernet card? ~~Which version of Linux are you running?~~ And there seem to be some similar reports on Reddit and in some Linux forums. I couldn't find a solution, though.
I saw earlier you mentioned it's an Optiplex, so I'm assuming this is an onboard NIC.
I've never had an onboard NIC not work out-of-the-box in Linux. Wifi, sure, but usually just certain chipsets with proprietary/closed firmware. Dell usually uses Intel NICs and they're usually pretty solid and well supported.
Check to make sure that the NIC is enabled in BIOS.
If you have/had Windows on this PC, did it work there?

Try an external USB NIC. Or an internal PCIe one if you're comfortable with that.
I recently had this problem while dualbooting mint and windows: windows was shutting down the LAN hardware somehow.
Had to disable fast startup (in windows, but I recall some Motherboards have also "fast boot" in BIOS as well?) and also in windows' LAN adapter settings a power saving option.

Creating a live USB with persistence is lengthy and even the decent tutorials out there vary greatly in their suggested approach, making it perfectly legitimate (even for non-beginners) to ask for guides that others have found helpful.
Yes, I have 2 computers running off of USB with Mint, with persistence. And I've set up that for my father in law and a friend too. You boot with one drive, you insert the other one, you UNMOUNT it, and then you load the installer. Please note though, that the bootloader will be installed into the internal drive instead of the usb one. To go around this problem, would be best to disable the internal drive temporarily during installation. Then the installer will be forced to write the bootloader on to the usb stick.
You could install Linux Mint onto a flash drive. Though keep in mind that flash drives aren't that robust, the flash chips are cheaper and will fail faster than SSDs.
I had a 128GB USB "3.0" (one of the cheaper ones so might have actually be slower than 2.x max speeds) stick fail on me right after installing Mint onto it and booting into it once or twice, so yes this is indeed a thing that can happen
Hi everyone, I'm planning on moving from w11 to kubuntu (lts release - 24.04). I'm a gamer at heart, a game designer by education, and wanting to get away from Windows. I could really use some top tips, best practices, and things to look out for. I have run Linux on a Chromebook, but never as my primary PC.
I'm preparing by copying tax info, critical documents, game prototypes, and D&D documents to a USB.

The most important thing: Tell us, the community, what your critical application needs are, and get suggestions for applications to use. So many people jump through fifty hoops because they Google search first and the first thing they try turns out to be deprecated, the second thing they try doesn't work on their system, the third thing they try has everything they need minus the most important part, the fourth thing they try turns out to be proprietary and half-broken, and so on.
You will not find good solutions just by searching around, you honestly, truly, need fucking nerds in this community who live this shit daily to help you know what the genuine best available solutions are. Otherwise you will spend weeks pounding your head against the keyboard using the wrong solutions, not because of anything you did wrong but because there are often so many different implementations of the same thing that it's nearly impossible to know which ones are the ones you need for your use case without directly asking some people.
Once you've been using it a few years, you'll be familiar enough with working solutions to keep track of this kind of thing yourself, but trust me, it takes a while.
My critical apps are (and Linux solution?) - obsidian - files are organized to be referenced cross platform - steam - works - talespire - requires proton (need to investigate how this works) - discord - works using browser (will need to test for video chat), might move to revolt if things in discord get worse.
Talespire you shouldn't have any issues with as long as you run it through Steam.
The main thing is that proton is enabled in Linux in Steam out of the box but only for some games. You will need to open your Steam settings and choose the Compatibility tab and choose to enable proton for all games ("Enable Steam Play for all other titles"). That should make it so that any game launched via Steam will run through the proton compatibility layer.
For non-Steam games check out Lutris.
As for Obsidian (not familiar, basing this on quick search), if its the "personal Wikipedia" note taking app they have multiple native Linux versions including a deb and a flatpak.
Discord, as I said elsewhere, use the website or the flatpak.
Check compatibility for all your programs before you move. Most Linux programs work on Windows but not vice versa. If you're not in a rush, try switching to programs that have a Linux equivalent before you move so that you'll have less of a culture shock. If you need any killer apps that don't have a Linux equivalent you're going to have to make your peace with that ahead of time, otherwise you're just going to end up switching back.
KDE is a good choice, and Kubuntu should serve you fine; if you end up going with Kubuntu, I would recommend sticking with it for at least half a year or so before considering switching to something else, as that will give you time to really understand what you like and don't like about how Kubuntu and KDE work.
Just to be safe you may want to copy important files to a cloud storage AND usb drive before formatting the drive.
Also don't overthink this and there is nothing wrong with Kubuntu, but Kinoite is going to be very similar and a little more resistant to n00b tinkering mistakes.

You're already using Obsidian, so my suggestion is... Take notes! Take notes on cool software you've discovered, take notes on your settings and configurations, take notes on any issues and bugs you've had to fix, take notes on how to use unfamiliar programs, take notes on Linux terminology. You have a huge personal knowledge base from years of using Windows. Linux is not hard to use, but it takes time to become second nature to you.
try not to get yourself in decision paralysis, if you mess something up it'll be pretty easy to redo it anyway because you've learnt how to do it already

911, and ideally they would alert a tactical response team with a negotiator to get on a helicopter while they gather details and form a plan in transit that would reflect their training for these situations. Have four of these teams in each state. police cordon off the area and monitor the situation to keep the team updated while they are in transit and to watch the entrances and exits while the staff that were already in the building, including resource officers, would be doing what they could to get people away or get them to the safest place they can. Police force as an intervention would be a last resort scenario, as escalation in these situations will only guarantee more dead. The police have no obligation to protect or serve under the current laws, they are not required to do fuck all, they should not be the people you expect to save or help you, they only exist at this point to punish you and bind you.

In most mass shootings I doubt negotiation is going to get very far - and the delay may cause more deaths. Many times the perpetrator simply commits suicide. These are folks who have hit 'fuck it' and are looking to end it all and cause a lot of damage on the way out. Often by the time police are even able to respond they've done most of the damage they will do already.

The voyger mobile app allows you to tag users and see how many times you've upvoted abd downvoted them. If you have an idea you can suggest it as a feature on github. Outside of that you can only really block and report if their behaviour breaks the rules.

So, just as a heads-up, building a truly minimal custom kernel is going to probably involve learning about what a bunch of kernel systems do. Like, this isn't going to be a five minute task skimming a menu with twenty choices on the lines of "Ethernet", "3D graphics", etc.
I don't know what you're aiming to accomplish, but it may be that a regular kernel build already does what you want. Like, say you want to reduce memory usage. Most of the current-day Linux kernel on typical distros is built to be modular. That is, features are built into modules, and never actually loaded unless that functionality is called for. It's not all that common for a typical user to need to build a custom kernel in 2025.
You can reduce build time, but that's not usually a huge issue for most people if they're using prebuilt kernels.
You can maybe shave down disk space, but the kernel isn't usually the first candidate that I'd go after for that.
If you're doing this as a learning experience, then knock yourself out. Just want to moderate expectations, if you're going into this thinking that this is a common task and is going to involve a minimal amount of learning and effort. You're probably going to discover that your kernel requires a lot more than you're listing here to usefully function.
If you do decide to go down this route, you're going to want to dig up one of the many guides to building and installing a new kernel. If you haven't already done so, I'd get to the point that you can build a normal kernel for your distro, with the options that it sets, and get it working and boot off it. That'll give you a working starting place before you start trying to figure out what you can rip out, and you'll be familiar with the bootloader, initrd, and some other stuff that you'll want to know. You're probably going to need to understand what a lot of the systems you're stripping out of your kernel do; Google is going to be your friend.
Longer TL;DR: Linus sees bad changes to the git tree by Kees Cook that he interprets as being of human origin and intentional, calls them "malicious" changes and orders that Kees Cook's privileges be revoked. Turns out that the "git-filter-repo" tool being used was actually the culprit as it is very powerful and incorrect usage explains the changes. Discussion then moves toward implementing safety checks in the tooling. Kees gets his permissions back.
You mean "using git." It's the only piece of software that I hate with Oracle. Jujutsu is a breath of fresh air and I can ignore that git ever existed.
git is genuinely one of the best tools ever created. It is an extremely simple idea with crazy effectiveness and a reasonable UX that is a bit off putting at first but makes a lot of sense later on.
That said, I'd genuinely be curious what you think jj has improved upon git.
The command line of jj makes sense and is easy to understand. I have to use graphical git clients because I want to cry every time I have to use its CLI.

Title kind of says it all but it's still baffling. Running an old ass amd fx with 24 gig ram in the other computer. Work laptop is an i7 with 64 gigs of ram and is still slower in daily use. Both have ssd boot drives.

Current versions of Windows really feel like they're chugging under the hood. I got a GPD Win Max 2 last year, with 64GB RAM, an eight-core Ryzen and an RTX-capable GPU, it's a beast of a machine.
The start menu still takes a second to open. The explorer menu is loading in after the window has opened. Doing a right-click to open context menus also takes longer than it should take (and it's noticeably quicker when you bring the old context menus back). Every time you do an action in Windows 11 it feels like an old geezer gets up from his wheelchair, fights a cough attack and almost collapses while trying to go to the bathroom.
I once read that the new start menu and those fancy explorer ribbons and context menus are written in React, so I guess the rendering engine is just a massive bloated browser nowadays that puts your system under way more load than it needs to.
Compared to that, Fedora 42 is blazingly fast on this machine. With a Samsung SSD the whole thing was installed in five minutes and KDE Plasma is just so snappy - everything opens instantly and it never feels like my machine needs to think for a second before displaying something. Now that we've also reached higher FPS with Proton in some scenarious, there is no good reason for me to even use Windows anymore.
Sounds like your organizations Windows 11 image is bloated and or your adnin didn't set much in the way of group policy. It could also be one of those shit corporate security products eating up resources.
Talk to your admins to see if you can speed it up. One of my work machines has a 8th gen Intel i5 with 48gb of ram and it is quick and snappy.

Not every single thing that's non-FOSS is enshittified, sometimes things cost A Lot of money to develop and those involved deserve to be paid. A good example of such software is Arturia's V Collection, a music/synthesiser program that requires access to original synths to recreate them. You own your license and can deregister it and sell your key to someone else.

I spent a while futsing around with wireplumber gui/pipewire to get Lyrebird to work to no effect. I tried routing my mic audio through Lyrebird and sometimes through sox, and then forwarded their audio to obs, but - no effects got applied. Sounded like my regular mic sound. I did make sure to activate pipewire to manage the audio instead of just pulseaudio.
Hoping for a recommendation before I spend another evening experimenting.
I usually do my effects on Reaper, pitching with ReaPitch plugin. I open JACK2 gui and use wiring graph, route audio input to reaper, then I route live output elsewhere, either voice chat or obs for recording. Works like a charm with anything, anywhere.
Yea. It's a whole workstation, but since I'm doing audio shenanigans in it already, it was a simpler choice to just use what I already had than trying something else. Maybe it works out for you, maybe you'll find it complicated. Wouldn't hurt to try if you got no better choice though.
I've had two server oses here: alma linux and debian(currently). On both of them, they will hang when I shut them down from cockpit, and they hang at the end of the shutdown.
Also, it takes an hour to a day to have this issue start. if it's restarted two times in a row quickly, it works perfectly fine for some reason.
What I've tried:
setting "acpi=off" and "acpi=force" kernel parameters in grub
removing my nvidia gpu(i was using nouveau drivers)
changing distros
nothing worked. here are some things that both distros had in common with eachother:
systemd
cockpit
libvirt & qemu
docker

Interesting. BIOS update? Maybe check through all the settings, or do a factory reset on the BIOS? I have a similar board (H510 something) running proxmox and it works fine.
@potentiallynotfelix As a diagnostic, I would suggest trying shutting them down by ssh in and then using systemctl to shut them down, if that works then you know the issue is with cockpit. If it hangs even when systemd is asked to halt then I would consider reverting to the previous bios and see if the problem persists.
Ok. Cockpit uses the shutdown command to shut down[src], but systemctl poweroff might work. I will also attempt to revert bioses if msi supports it. thank you very much!
@potentiallynotfelix Ok bet of luck. I've had all sorts of weird issues with systemd as of late, but not sure how many of those are inherent to systemd itself and how many are Ubuntu's config of same.

I've got an i7=6850k machine on an Asus motherboard, and after I flashed to the latest bios, the USB power strobed on and off every few seconds so keyboard and mouse would work then not work then work then not work. I thought something was broken with hardware but then found others had the same issue with the most current BIOS, flashed to one release earlier and all good.
Flashing an older bios seemed to succeed! I gave it 14 hours or so before attempting a reboot, and if seemed to reboot without stalling. I'll give it a few more days now and try another, but that seemed to have fixed it.
Is it actual server hardware? I've seen some very weird things with real servers that take ages to reboot (I was assuming it was self checking or something). Are you sure its hung, and not just very slow to shutdown/reboot?
Is there any serial/monitor output before the hang?

@weird Same here, and although Linux is my daily driver, I do have a Windows VM and a dual boot that I use for gaming, but on those I create my accounts without a Microsoft account by removing the network connectivity first, and then if they get one drive installed anyway, I de-install it.
I have a Windows 11 laptop and recently gotten excited to try Linux. I read good things about Mint being pretty good to go out of the box, and while I can be a fast learner I'm also tired and don't have a tremendous amount of bandwidth.
So I followed all the installation instructions, verified, flashed a USB, booted into it and started to install a dual boot of it. Made it through installation until it told me my computer had BitLocker on, and I'd need to go turn it off and try again. Fair enough.
Went back into my Windows OS (after booting it went to "diagnosing your PC"). I don't seem to have bitlocker installed - looks like a Pro version thing which I don't have. It did show that encryption was enabled, so I turned it off.
Restarted to boot to USB. Nope, "mmx64.efi - Not Found" error.
OK, googled it, renamed it, let's go.

I had a very similar issue when starting my Linux journey, also on a laptop running windows 11. I could not actually fix the issue until I tried installing a different distro entirely.
Check it Ventoy, it's become a handy tool for me. Lets you have several bootable ISOs or images on a single USB.
I've tried quite a few but right now the longest surviving one is Manjaro. This system still dual boots (technically a actually triple boot lol), so you can fix the issue.
I also have Fedora on another pc and I don't care for it. I also have dabbled very lightly with Debian (hosting some services), Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Endeavour, Cachy, Mint, KDE Neon, and PopOS.
I have liked the Arch based distros the most so far, and highly prefer KDE Plasma as a desktop environment.
Just to add a note for OP: If your not into tinkering and taking care a of your OS don't even think to try any Arch based distro. There's a minimum time you have to spend to keep your system healthy.
Just recentlty I had a boot issue after an update (black screen on boot without login or tty) and after a lot of debugging and websearch couldn't fix my issue. At first I though of a fuckedup bootloader or to long wait time between updates but It was a recent issue with MESA and nvidia driver.
Had I looked up the EndeavourOS forum rather then my own search results that would have avoided a fuckedup fresh install wich didn't solved the issue either.
So yeah, there was a solution out there (downgrade MESA, install new nvidia driver rather than nouveau) but I wasn't looking in the right place 🫤 So here I'm with a fresh install...
shim_lock protocol not found appears to be a result of secure boot failing. One simple solution would be to go to the BIOS and disable SecureBoot. You can also try to configure it to recognize your efi but I'd turn it off first and see if that helps.
Not the one you're asking but I've been dual-booting Windows and Linux on my gaming desktop for many years, every time a build a new PC, disabling "secure boot" AND "fast boot" in the BIOS is the very first thing I do and I never had problems (I play on Linux but I keep Windows for testing in case I want to report a bug).
Fast boot is even more troublesome, since it's a Windows specific feature that allows it to not truly shutdown so it can startup faster later, but that can cause locks for other OS that won't work correctly.
In theory, Linux should be able to support secure boot (not fast boot), but since that one too was made for Windows, there are cases in which it could cause problems, I will always disable it just to be on the safe side.
Microsoft is deliberately making it crazy hard to use linux. We're so used to dealing with hostile relationships recently that we dont even recognize this broken situation.
Anyway, can you try installing it on separate ssd? Its rather hard to run it in dual boot because windows will frequently fuck up your bootloader and so on.
I had a bad feeling that dual booting wouldn't be the seamless thing I hoped for. I have an old Mac laptop I might try installing on to see how I like it and decide if I'm just gonna wipe Windows entirely.
It's incredible how shit Windows is and everyone just accepts it. It shows me ads on my lock screen FFS (and I know how to disable that cuz I've done it three times now and they keep coming back like a horror movie monster you didn't behead).
Unfortunately, the windows bootloader issues are also ingrained in UEFI for many motherboards. Every few days I start my PC up and it has decided my grub entry is garbage and does me the favor of removing it and defaulting back to the windows bootloader.
I've worked around this by adding a bootcfg entry to the windows bootloader that points at grub. Now any time this happens, I pick the grub entry from the windows bootloader, my PC reboots, and now it'll keep defaulting to grub again until the next time it decides to wipe it.
It takes some doing, but you can live boot windows from a USB drive for those rare instances you need it. You can also just install it to a VM inside Linux (also not easy). But honestly these days the times where you'll NEED Windows are few and far between (and getting fewer and farther).
Personally I just installed Mint instead of Windows. If you back up your important files to an external drive, then what's the harm? Even if you need to go back to Windows, that's just another USB flash drive setup.
That's great if you're in the mindset of "just wipe and reload it's not a problem" But most people who aren't chronic computer users aren't like that. Spending 2+ hours resetting up their computer to be just like it was isn't fun to most people.

I recently made a full disk encryption on my computer via the debian installer.
I partitioned it like this:

Second harddrive fully encrypted with one logical volume and mounting point /mnt/data
The install of linux worked pretty well.
Unfortunately, the hibernation part doesn't work out of the box. When I press hibernate (or standby), it only goes to the lock screen. How can I solve that issue? (Is it even a good idea to use hibernation on encrypted devices?)
Second thing: As you can see from my setup, I use 2 disks. When I start up my system, I only need to enter my decryption password once (not twice for the 2nd HD) and I see, that my second hard disk seems to be mounted already. It seems that people usually struggle with typing in their passwords twice and want a solution for that. Is it possible, that debian automatically fixed this for me (It's the same pw for both)?
You have to use two swaps if you already use one swap, because one will be used when the system is on, but the second will be used to set the RAM content + the 1st content into SWAP (if any), otherwise, it would fail.
Then, find the hibernation swap uuid:

Hmm, doesn't this undermine the whole purpose of encryption? If I understand that right, there will always be unencrypted stuff of me? Also when I completely shutdown?
You can do encrypted swap as well. If you use the same passphrase you can install decrypt_keyctl and use it as described here. It will cache the passphrase and send it to every other LUKS volume that needs decrypting so you have to type it only once. This is what I'm currently using and my root is on ZFS on LUKS.
Another option which I haven't used is to have a small volume that only stores your LUKS keys as files, then your LUKS volumes reference those files as keys, then you decrypt only that volume with a passphrase upon boot.
Another option is to use a swap file. I used to run Ubuntu LTS on LUKS on LVM. That is disk > EFI and LVM partitions > LVM volume boot, LVM volume for LUKS > root filesystem inside LUKS > swapfile in that root filesystem. Upon boot, GRUB is able to read the Linux kernel straight from the boot volume on LVM. Boots the kernel. You get a prompt to decrypt the LUKS volume where the root filesystem is. Once decrypted, the kernel can access the swapfile if it needs to resume from it.
I have this working on Debian like how you have it set up, everything on an encrypted lvm volume, except for boot and efi. Just one disk though. When waking up, it asks for the password like it does during normal bootup. It then restores RAM from the encrypted swap after you type the password. I think it worked out of the box, but it has been a while, so not 100% sure if I had to enable this somehow. Anyway this looks good to me.
If you manually run systemctl hibernate, does that work? Assuming this also does not work, you need to look at the logs during the failed hibernate attempt. Probably something like sudo journalctl -f and/or sudo dmesg -wH (for kernel logs). Open this up in two terminals, run systemctl hibernate and observe any errors or warnings.
It's possible this is a hardware/driver issue, i.e. a driver prevents hibernation or fails at it. You may be able to figure out which driver/device is responsible by looking at the logs.

OK, I'm on Debian Trixie with Gnome and just got a new (used) geforce 1050ti graphics card. I installed the proprietary drivers, and everything was working fine (after wrangling wine issues) until I turned on the sound. Playing something simple from a single audio source would work OK. But if another program started playing something, or if I pause/played quickly, then the audio would get all distorted and echo-y.
So far, the only way I can get the audio to be stable is the following:
in gnome settings, set the audio output to HDMI/displayport
install easyeffects
under output/players, enable the PipeWire ALSA [fluidsynth] playback
under PipeWire/General, uncheck the "Use default output", and change the output to "Built-in Analog Stereo" (which in my case isn't hooked up with anything)
Alternatively, I can changev the Gnome settings to the "Built-in Analog", and then in easyeffects, I can exclude the pipewire ALSA, and enable whatever programs I want to hear. The problem with this method is the Gnome volume control then doesn't work.
I'm mainly posting in hopes this gets indexed and helps some other wayward linux weirdo in the future. But I'm also curious if yall have any suggestions for a more permanent fix. Remove ALSA? In the default configuration, it definitely seems like there's some feedback or doubling or interference going on with pipewire and/or ALSA.
But linux audio is still black magic to me. I don't even know if ALSA or pipewire is a lower level. It's one of those situations where I half-solve a problem I couldn't find by googling, and just want to put it out in the ether
ALSA is lowest level, and is the kernel interface to audio hardware. Pipewire provides a userspace service to share limited hardware.
Try setting "export PIPEWIRE_LATENCY=2048/48000" before running an audio producing application (from the same shell).
Distortion can sometimes be related to the audio buffers not getting filled in time, so increasing the buffering as above gives it more time to even out. You can try 1024 instead of 2048 too.
There is no doubt a way to set it globally, if it helps.

To be fair showing the overview on startup makes perfect sense on vanilla gnome, it's only dumb if you install one of the two specific extensions that partly replace it.
I think it just comes down to different people using their IDEs different. I almost don't use the dash and always just hit super key and then search or super and then open one of the few things in my dash. And I really like that gnome gets out of my way in tge "default" / "desktop" mode
I can appreciate that people use their systems very differently, but this is something that gnomes designers did not care to acknowledge throughout that whole exchange; input directly from their end users, and that's bearing in mind they collect no telemetry.
I appreciate working in UX for a community driven project is no easy task, many of the people commenting in the thread linked above could be considered more advanced users with their own desktop shortcuts configured, and a one size fits all approach satisfying all is difficult to deliver. All they asked for was an option for this new behaviour.

By default (at least in Fedora Rawhide) GNOME 40 fires up the activities/overview mode (not sure what the correct term for it is) when you login from the greeter.

The Liberux Nexx smartphone will be (if it makes it to the production stage) the most powerful smartphone (with the RK3588S) to run GNU/Linux and the mainline kernel. More powerful than the PinePhone Pro, or the OnePlus 6. It will have a decent OLED display, alot of RAM, and much of what you would expect from a privacy-focused GNU/Linux smartphone such as hardware killswitches.
That is to say, this phone will (hopefully if it releases) be a true daily-driver candidate for many people, more so than the current offerings are now. While I am skeptical of it (as I am with any crowdfunded project) I think this will be a great thing if it does make it to production.
The biggest thing keeping me from daily driving a Linux phone is the camera. I want a good camera, not an afterthought. I can only guess from the renderings, but this thing looks like the camera was an afterthought.

Windows 11 has become more annoying lately as it shoves ads for XBox Game Pass in my face, pushes AI features no one asked for and demands that I reconsider the choices I made during installation on a regular basis. Plus, it just isn't that attractive.

It's hard to give up Windows forever because so many applications only run in Microsoft's OS. For example, the peripheral software that runs with many keyboards and mice isn't available for Linux. Lots of games will not run under Linux. So I think it's likely I'll be using Windows again, at least some of the time, after this week is through.
However, for now, I'm going to give Linux a very serious audition and document the experience.
There's an official Flatpak, and an official external Ubuntu repo you have to manually add, so they probably did get an unofficial build of some kind if they just ran apt install on Ubuntu since it doesn't come with Flatpak support.
It's definitely confusing when you're new to Linux until you learn what all of that means, compared to being used to windows where you go to the website and click the installer.
I dont think the criticism of installing apps is valid. Windows also has many ways of installing things. He criticizes the app center as if you can install everything from the microsoft store. On windows you still install stuff from a website, and you can use a package manager too it just isn't a requirement.
The difference I think is in windows basically everything is just download the installer and click it, it's very easy and people are used to that. And most apps have their own update system that takes care of things after install.
It would be nice though if the app stores were more complete on Linux, and showed all the available packages. I run into this on Fedora where the app store (discover) won't show a package but I can install it with DNF on the CLI. And if it had a way to add external sources like a github release that auto-updated, like Obtanium does on Android that would make it a substantial step up from the windows experience.
This is very similar to my experience, including the sleep battery drain issue on my laptop which I did eventually find a fix for (bios setting, had to disable 'deep sleep' mode of all things), why it works fine in windows but not in linux with that setting enabled I don't know. The battery drain is still substantially higher in sleep but it at least lasts a few days instead of being dead over night.
My desktop is still on Windows because hardware compatibility just isn't there yet, after waking from sleep I can't click on anything or type letters, but moving the mouse cursor works, as does the windows key, tab, etc... It's fixed by reconnecting both KB/Mouse but that's a PITA. And the other is my audio interface only partially works, the 1st output is fine, but the 2nd output is very quiet even with volume at 100%.
A more minor thing that still bugs me a lot is it takes absolutely forever to resume from sleep mode, sometimes 30+ seconds before the screen comes on.
The problem is these just aren't easy bugs to solve, searching for help is tough because they're such weird ones, and I don't really have the time to spend trying a bunch of random potential fixes.
Yep, definitely a Windows user. One who would go out of his way to use actual Google Chrome rather than Chromium. He seems to be starting to catch on, by the end of the week. I wonder if he'll keep going.
It can be really frustrating to fix a bug, especially one caused by a huge change like switching to KDE because so many things have changed and could be the cause. Especially if you're not someone who likes to do that kind of stuff (me), and would prefer things just work in the first place so re-installing a KDE version is the way to go.
Flatpak is stable and widely used, but it still has some pain points when used in certain environments or for certain ends. However, most of those drawbacks are being worked on, and fixes are planned.
I wish it opens a prompt asking a list of permissions when open for the first time. Like, VSCodium always needs local file system access, VPN clients always need network interface permission, etc.
Yeah, we have Flatseal, but it should be automated by the publisher to have a list of prerequisite permissions.
Flatpak is quite fucking far from perfect, and will always remain so due to its flawed design and UX approach.
Pretty sure the culprit here is Fedora’s packaging which adds an opaque systemd timer to run auto-updates, but the thread immediately next to this one on my homepage just happened to be a nice case-study in Flatpak fuckery: lemmy.world/post/30654407
Of course, the proposed changes in the article do nothing to fix this sorta problem, which happens to be the variety that end users actually care about. Flatpak is an epic noob trap since it pretends to be a plug-n-play beginner friendly tool, but causes all sorts of subtle headaches that newcomers inevitably don’t have diagnostic experience to address.

Article doesn't mention my biggest problem with flatpaks, that the packages are not digitally signed. All major Linux distros sign their packages, and flathub should too. I would prefer to see digital signatures from both flathub and the package's maintainer. I don't believe flathub has either one currently.
Mozilla, for example, would sign Firefox's flatpak with a PGP key that they would disclose on their website. You verify the signature using the RSA algorithm (or any other algorithm for digital signatures. There are a bunch.) Or, you could just trust that your connection wasn't tampered the first time, then you would have the public key, and it would verify each time that the package came from that same person. Currently, you have to trust every time that your connection isn't tampered.
Major flatpak providers (Flathub at the very least) would include their PGP public key in the flatpak software repo, and operating system vendors would distribute that key in the flatpak infrastructure for their operating system, which itself is signed by the operating system's key.
Flatpak doesn't verify signatures like normal package managers do
So the issue isn't that you downloaded a flatpak that included malicious code. The issue is that you downloaded a legit flatpak and ended up downloading malicious code because flatpak doesn't verify what it downloads

Its more readable, and its syntax is less arcane than bash.

bash scripting is not intended to perform all of your logic in the scripting language, it's intended to call out to other programs which perform specific tasks. The entire POSIX command set is your bash scripting language.
Your script is a simple one-liner if you know some simple commands:

Can someone explain to me why? The outputs are objects and that is cool for scripts, but the fact that every small thing is its own cmdlet is super annoying. I can do everything in Linux if I know 10 commands. In PS I would always have to look up everything.
If I recall the Verb-Noun idea is supposed to make it clear what is happening, take a look through stuff like the approved verbs for defining cmdlets. There's aliases and stuff for sure for example I think ls is an aliases for Get-ChildItem in PowerShell.
It's supposed to make it so you don't necessarily need to look things up, need to do something to an item? Well you can Copy, Remove, Rename, Move etc, and while yeah that's a super basic example that you know the equivalent linux commands for, the concept is supposed to apply everywhere. Now, whether or not people follow the guidelines is probably another story.
I don't really hate shell scripting, feel like they all have their place, complex stuff though is nicer in straight PowerShell than bash IMO, but I'm fine using either.
The Get-ChildItem cmdlet gets the items in one or more specified locations. If the item is a container, it gets the items inside the container, known as child items.
How does this help though? If anything they would've helped themselves by porting more Linux commands to work natively in Windows. This move makes it easier for Windows admins and devs to switch to Linux. With the latest horrible moves in the Windows desktop space I can't believe they're trying to become the "RedHat of Windows".
I want to have a mirror of my local music collection on my server, and a script that periodically updates the server to, well, mirror my local collection.
But crucially, I want to convert all lossless files to lossy, preferably before uploading them.
That's the one reason why I can't just use git - or so I believe.
I also want locally deleted files to be deleted on the server.
Sometimes I even move files around (I believe in directory structure) and again, git deals with this perfectly. If it weren't for the lossless-to-lossy caveat.
It would be perfect if my script could recognize that just like git does, instead of deleting and reuploading the same file to a different location.
My head is spinning round and round and before I continue messing around with find and scp it's time to ask the community.
I am writing in bash but if some python module could help with it I'm sure I could find my way around it.

Not all files in the local collection are lossless. A variety of formats.
The purpose of the remote is for listening/streaming with various applications
The lossy version is for both reducing upload and download (streaming) bandwidth. On mobile broadband FLAC tends to buffer a lot.
The home of the collection (and its origin) is my local machine.
Speaking as a data engineer, you’re having trouble because git is the wrong tool for the job. You can make it work if you use git-lfs + custom hooks — but if you choose to go that route, be aware you’re making things unnecessarily hard for yourself.
If you want to make this easy, separate out your concerns: 1) Versioning: take periodic snapshots of your unconverted files with a binary-friendly diffing tool like restic or borg. Alternatively, ZFS/btrfs snapshots are an excellent way to handle this. 2) Conversion: keep your original files in their own directory. Set up a small script that searches your directory of original files recursively, passes the files to lame to encode to V0 or V2, and outputs them to a separate directory of lossy mp3 files. 3) Syncing: use rsync with the --delete flag to copy your lossy files to the server + clear out files you’ve removed locally.
For the conversion to lossy, git smudge/clean filters might work. Afaik git-lfs works with them. In general git-lfs might be something interesting for your use case.
I’ve been using Linux on and off for over a year now—not a total newbie, but still learning. I know the basics and usually rely on GPT or forums when I hit a wall. I’ve tried a bunch of distros so far: Kali, Debian, Pop!_OS, KDE Neon, Kubuntu… and currently running Fedora KDE.
Fedora is solid, but I keep finding myself tempted to try something new. Maybe I get bored easily—or maybe I just haven’t found the one yet. That’s why I’m asking for your help.
Here’s what I’m really looking for:
🔹 Large and fast app repository – I want access to a wide range of apps, updated quickly, without weird dependency issues.
🔹 Great UI/UX – KDE is my current favorite. I love how modern and smooth it feels, and I want something that builds on that experience.
🔹 Stability without being outdated – I don’t mind rolling release if it’s reliable. Crashes and breakages are a dealbreaker.
🔹 Good extras – Whether it’s unique tools, deep customization options, or just thoughtful polish, I love a distro with a “complete” feel.
🔹 Active community/support – Docs, forums, or anything that helps when things go wrong.
I’d love your suggestions—especially if you’ve been in the same place: bouncing between distros, loving KDE, and still chasing that “perfect” setup.
What would you recommend and why? Any underrated KDE-based distro I should check out? Or maybe something mainstream but deeply customizable and stable?

This may be at odds with stability somewhat being rolling release, but you may want to check out SUSE tumbleweed or EndeavourOS. You already have a solid pick based on your established requirements.

And one more thing, are most of the softwares are available on tumbleweed? Like i mostly use FDM, vs code and some other tools because fedora dont have some including FDM but everything else in fedora is pretty good and decent.
Some of the installs can be a little weird, but I've never had anything that I couldn't get running. Vscode has an install for tumbleweed code.visualstudio.com/Download
The major "issue" is the package names are different between Debian and tumbleweed, so if you're installing software from github that isn't directly provided by suse/appimage/flatpak then a lot of times you'll need to install the dependencies manually by finding the corresponding packages (since most github repositories have directions for Debian/Ubuntu and not suse)
EndeavourOS. The default desktop is KDE these days.
Easy to install.
Attractive desktops out of the box. KDE is the default. A few nice quality of life utilities.
It uses the Arch repos and kernel. The AUR (yay) is installed out-of-the-box. So, the biggest package selection in the Linux world. Always up-to-date. Updates fast.
Great community in the EOS forums. Some of the best Linux docs on the web in the Arch wiki. The Arch wiki is an amazing resource for learning.
Very stable. Breakages are rare, especially if you use an LTS kernel. The current LTS kernel is the same one that Debian 13 will release with “soon”. So, not exactly ancient.
Biggest “downside” is that there is no GUI software installer out-of-the-box.
If that is really a deal-breaker, just install one like pamac or octopi. “yay -S octopi” should do it.
Or install a menu driven text based package manager like pacseek. “yay -S pacseek”
Or just take a few minutes to learn how to use pacman or yay at the command-line. You said you wanted to learn.
If you got bored by Fedora is probably the right choice for you. Otherwise nothing compares to Arch, esp if you "I’m still learning and only know some basics, but I want to go deeper and really understand how things work under the hood.". Another safer-nobrainer is Tumbleweed.
You could try Tuxedo OS. It's stable Ubuntu minus Snap plus newer KDE packages by a small Linux system retailer. Been using it for about a year now on my work laptop and it's perfectly adequate.

As per title. I've been wondering about this. How can we help when someone managing a community/instance can't find help locally, for whatever reason? Something like an "help wanted" board. Even if it's for one month, three months, etc.
I've been an admin for a 8-9k+ users Discord server for years, but I love Lemmy so much I'd like to see if I can be somehow useful here. I don't think I'm power tripping at all, but have zero tolerance for harassment, racism or sexism, bigotry and honestly want to keep neocons and bigots/trolls out of Lemmy as long as it's humanly possible. Whenever in doubt, I generally abstain from using any moderation power and talk with other mods/users to find the best course of action.
The situation I imagined in the first paragraph did happen to me. Managing the server alone was draining my mental health, and I couldn't find anyone to help with all I had to do. Then someone wrote to me, we had lengthy discussions about the rules and philosophy of the server and we've been co-managing it together for years. Lemm.ee closing down made me think about "how to help where and when it's needed"?

Today, 10th June 2024, marks Lemmy.zip's first birthday.
Back on the 10th June 2023, I was as disillusioned with Reddit as many others here were, and wanted somewhere I could go where mods and users weren't treated like an end product.
At the time I had been messing with a lot of home server stuff (think Jellyfin and the *arr suite - usenet is great 😉) and figured I could spin up a docker container or two, how hard could it be right?
I'd never even heard of ansible, never changed an nginx config file, hell I'd never had more than one other person use something I'd spun up before. But after a couple of hours, there it was - Lemmy.zip. And suddenly, people were actually joining, posting, and making content. It felt unreal.
Since then, and with an awful lot of help and support from Sami and the community, I feel like we've got a really good, solid, stable and active Lemmy instance, our own corner of the internet where we can't be abused for corporate greed. In this first year, I have spent an awful lot of time learning how to run a so-called "social media" site, how to protect the backend, and how to build a bot to do all the boring stuff.
Linked in this post is a very brief overview of the last year - yearone.lemmy.zip - which gives some detail on how things unfolded at the start.
I am insanely thankful for all the lemmy.zip users, even the ones who only visited briefly. You're all brilliant (yes, even the lurkers 😘 ) and I hope you all continue to enjoy Lemmy.zip for many more years.
Running your own Lemmy server has its ups and downs. Days like today, when I can debug various issues without stressing, push new code to ZippyBot like its second nature, and have the ability to celebrate massive milestones like this, make all the bad times worth it.
I remember about a month or two in to the sites operation, and we'd just upgraded to the latest lemmy version - there was a period of about 5 or 6 hours continuous downtime and nothing I tried was getting the site working again. I was sat with my head in my hands, completely out of ideas, ready to give up. But thanks to the guidance of some fantastic people in the wider Lemmy community, eventually the site came back to life. Many mistakes have been made (many server backups have been restored 🙃) but we've continued to learn and grow, and I think the site is all the better for it.
We've got over 2,500 signed up users, we've recently tipped over 500 active users a month, we're in the top 20 lemmy instances - and in reality, that's all thanks to the mods and users of lemmy.zip. Without you, there wouldn't be any point to the site!
(Interesting fact - our longest serving user is Firestorm Druid - I don't have any medals yet sorry, but you deserve one!)
Looking forward to the next 12 months, I'm hoping we can continue to grow and continue to be a Lemmy instance for everyone. With the increasing enshittification of Reddit (and the wider "traditional" social media sites), I hope many people can escape and make their way over here. The Lemmy of today is a much different place to what it was 12 months ago. Even from purely a technical standpoint, federation is infinitely more reliable, and there are many long-standing servers to choose from now.
So once again I say a massive thank you to everyone. To the mods, you're the backbone of creating content across the whole lemmy network. Its often a thankless job, but here's hoping this goes a little way to expressing the gratitude we all have for you.
To everyone that has donated - I'm still humbled by your generosity. Thank you, you keep the lights on and the bits flowing.

Firstly, apologies I missed last month's update. As I will go in to during this month's update, the train has not been smooth sailing, the ship missed the station - for a little while, trying to uncover what has gone wrong has been like unraveling a can of worms that has gone off the tracks.
Because of the length of this update, I'm leaving off new communities for this month, but feel free to pop any in the comments you'd like to share!
Server Updates
So, I'll begin at the 0.19.11 update for Lemmy. I'd planned in some time for the update, and to begin with things went fairly normally, with usual server updates etc. Then it came time to update Lemmy itself to 0.19.11 - however, instead of the ~10 minutes of suggested downtime, it quickly became apparent that something wasn't quite right. The logs gave no indication of anything happening, and after an hour it became apparent that something hadn't worked. With not much to go on, and all the various logs showing that absolutely nothing had apparently happened, I cancelled the upgrade process and tweaked the logs so I'd get a bit more information than the standard logs usually show. This turned out to be an internal DNS issue, where Lemmy wasn't talking to the database.
So, onwards again I fixed that issue and reapplied the update, to which it had appeared to start working. Excitedly, I give it ten minutes as advised, to come back and see that it was still going.. and going.. and going.. and two hours later it was saying something was still happening. Well, by this point I'd run out of time and trusted in the process that it would resolve itself. I had unfortunately had to go to sleep as I had work the next morning, and a baby to look after.
By the next morning, still nothing. However, I can't SSH in to the server on my phone (nor would I ever want to in case it was stolen etc) and all the backend stuff is behind layers of protection, so the site was down for the day while I had to do real world work nonsense.
By the time I'd got home, it still thought it was ongoing, so I made the decision that likely something was broken and cancelled the update. Of course, letting something go to town for hours on the database meant it was probably ruined, or would require completely investigating - ain't nobody got time for that. So I crossed my fingers and hoped my backup solution had worked which it did with flying colours. I restored the database and the site came back to life.
Of course, I don't like running old versions, so I rescheduled which went much much smoother the second time around, taking 8 minutes. Whew.
For a few days, everything looked great. Metrics looked spot on and the site was running like it always was, and then bam - the server completely locked up:
A restart did eventually fix this, and things returned to normal, but not quite the same.
On the 24th April, I started getting reports of the site returning various 502 and 504 errors, and also issues with images loading. Broken images has been a feature of the image proxy for a while, but this was on another scale, with sometimes whole pages of broken images and a connection timeout on every refresh. I was, in hindsight, very out of my depth here.
I started trying to see what the cause of the timeouts where, and it became apparent quickly that the site was being hit by previously-unseen levels of traffic:
On the above graph, the left hand side was the usual amount of traffic we'd get, and on the right was the new levels we were receiving. This was likely causing the server to effectively be DDOS'd, and uncovering issues with the performance of the server. For a comparison of the usual amount of traffic we get, here's a graph from the last server update:
Many configs were tweaked. Much database performance monitoring took place. Things were turned off and back on indiscriminately. Unfortunately not much worked.
It was at this point our new Admin, Gazby, joined the team - and quickly got to work diagnosing and fixing so many of the issues.
Some of the changes include much better backups, reduced latency in image storage (the images moved from the USA to EU storage), images being served from i.lemmy.zip to allow for better caching to reduce the load on the server, complete review and tweak of all the configs and server setup, and a detailed list of things we need to work on going forwards (plus no doubt lots of things I am forgetting).
This has really helped to stabilize the site, and while we can see it's not 100% perfect, the amount of 502/504 errors should have massively reduced, and the site should be almost as it used to be.
One of things Gazby has also worked on is reporting and insights into the server, and so for example here's a graph showing the 504 errors today:
We've got some plans on the horizon we're working on which should increase the performance of the site, which possibly/probably will include a server move to rule out hardware issues or latent config issues we can't find.
Whatever triggered these issues I am still not sure - it looks like it could be scrapers/AI bots hammering the site, and so we've put some measures in place here. If you use the old front end then you may have noticed a cloudflare challenge to try and prevent the server being overloaded - also a prewarning, the old front end is no longer maintained, and unless someone steps in, it is not compatible with the next version of Lemmy. Therefore at that point it will be retired unless someone works on it to bring it back in line. It is also the cause of a LOT of the server traffic problems, so it probably isn't too much of a bad thing. Maybe someone will rewrite it to be better 😀
As it stands, things still aren't perfect - we had an issue where the bit of the server that actually directs you to the right place got overwhelmed, and so we put a fix in for that, but they are hopefully a lot better than they were a couple of months ago.

One final thing - on the 10th June, Lemmy.zip turns two years old!! 🥳 🎉 I'm hoping to do something nice for it, similar to last years (which is here if you haven't seen it!) - but a quick thank you to everyone who has been part of the ride so far!
As some of you may have realised, the planned upgrade sort of crashed everything, and we had our longest period of downtime since the site began.
This is partly because I had to go to sleep (thanks to a newborn and a job).
The good news is that the backup process worked! We've restored to seconds before the upgrade took the site offline.
The bad news is that federation is likely to be.. wonky.. for a little while. The site may also go up and down while I undo some of the fixes I tried.
Ultimately the issue came down to the upgrade failing (I am not sure why - will be digging into this now the priority is no longer getting the site up) and then the containers not talking to eachother, so the UI wouldn't talk to lemmy, and lemmy wouldn't talk to the database.
I rebuilt the containers, restored the backup, restarted everything, and it's all come back up (admittedly not perfect right now).
Importantly, I want to issue an apology. This isn't what I want for Lemmy.zip, and it should've been handled way better by myself. I'm always learning but this took way longer than it should've, and while I take some solace in the fact the backup process worked and has been proven to work in production, the delay in being able to get this back up is entirely my fault and frankly unacceptable.
I'll be working to document this outage, the steps it took to get it back up, and some form of repeatable plan so a repair can be replicated in the future if I'm not available.
In terms of upgrading to 0.19.11 - I will have to try again soon as it's got some security fixes we desperately need to implement.
I wish we could all meet in better circumstances. The closing of lemm.ee is a real blow to the fediverse, and I have nothing but the greatest respect for the lemm.ee admin team. Lemm.ee was a cornerstone of the lemmy community, and set a high bar for moderation and technical performance.

It's weird to suggest anyone would. But we've been hearing about how "Now is the time for a Ukrainian counterattack!" since 2022. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian conscripts got shoveled into Russian defense lines and butchered by mines and artillery, while Westerners cheered like they were watching some kind of pro-sporting event.
FFS, you can find videos all over the internet of Ukrainians and Russians butchering one another and bragging about it. You can find bespoke influencer news networks bragging about how their team is "Owning" the opposition with grisly reprisals. They're trending all over social media.

Most of the images that are shared are basically 'one off' images for a quick gag or as part of a conversation specific to that moment. And often that conversation or interact is a 'one off' event as well. Which means it was all meaningful when it happened and when it was read the few times it was noticed over two or three years but then it is forgotten.
If there is anything meaningful I come across that I think is important to me or something I want to keep a reference of or keep ... I'll save it or screenshot it and put it away in my own storage or data.
Otherwise, I really don't mind losing all those other images I had created over the years ... they already did their work when people saw them at that moment.
The only reason anyone would want to keep all that data is to archive it for historical reasons .... or to monetize it by collecting a bunch of unique data, images connected to real people.

Our instance is currently down and I can't get remote access to the servers. It appears that there might have been a hardware failure of the main firewall, which is the one thing I can't work around remotely.
I am still trying a few things, but I am not very optimistic that I can get access.
The really unfortunate part is that just now I am on one of my rare work deployments abroad, so I also can't access it physically during the next few weeks and my usual back up that could restart it is not available either.
As something like that never happened in 3 years operating the servers, I thought I can risk it, but murphy's law seems inescapable 😓

Well, on the plus side lots of lessons learned and I think I might move at least the xmpp server to an external vps to have a backup communication channel.
Not sure about your area, but a wireguard accessible OOB connection is a great piece of kit to keep handy. I use a cheap 768kbps SIM in an Ethernet connected switch into my personal systems. It's saved my skin numerous times.
I'm sure this is obvious, especially in hindsight, but just mentioning because the existence of IoT LTE data plans for a minimal fee ( $100/year for me in Midwest US) was NOT obvious to me until 2 years ago.
Yeah I had plans to set up something like that, but always other priorities and in this specific case I could maybe access other internal servers but i would need KVM access to reboot the firewall or some other way to cut physical power. And exfiltrating hundreds of GBs of lemmy database wouldn't work over such a small pipe either.
Might it also be possible/feasible to send an "email blast" to everyone with a slrpnk.net account? It would probably be quite complicated to send that many emails at once without getting blocked by the major email providers, but hypothetically we've all registered with emails...
Just spitballing ideas for the future. Everything's fine now. Gives me an excuse to spend a little more time on the Canadian end of the fediverse. 😀
As email in profile is an optional feature on our instance about 50% of the userbase opted to not share one so we would only reach some people. But yes, getting spam filtered would be another problem of mass-mailing.
But I found a way to put up a simple html error page and will add this later to inform our members and link to this thread.

I this it’s a law that servers run 100% perfect until the literal day one leaves town with zero way to return home. One of the many reasons I got all my services off of unraid.

I think we will share a post-mortem write up of the actual improvements we will do to avoid this in the future.
One thing I will definitly do is to add a KVM remote management console to one of our server boards and move the main firewall into a VM with hardware passthrough of the NICs (this was anyways planned for a 10gbit network upgrade for the second half of 2025). This way I should be able to reboot and even reinstall the main ingress point remotely, so that only the fiber gateway remains as a failure point that requires physical access.

The ministry said Japan saw 1.6 million deaths in 2024, up 1.9 percent from a year earlier.

In the three and a half years my son has been alive, the Japanese government has given us a grand total of ¥120,000 ($834 USD). That covers about a month’s worth of childcare now thanks to soaring grocery prices.

The front glass was magnetically attached, so it only took a suction cup or two to start disassembly, and basic screwdrivers to remove the screen and get access to the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, DVD drive, etc.
And yes you could replace or upgrade parts as necessary, none of this newer soldered on storage shit they do these days.
I've lost a lot of respect for companies that solder on important parts that should rightfully be fairly easy to replace or upgrade.
Plus, now the big companies have taken to forcing encryption on the storage devices, effectively locking the drive to the system. Well isn't that just cute for the backup operator that's trying to recover your late grandmother's family photos...
