This is too funny, but I'm an old enough fart to have used a slide-rule. My early study for a 1st Class Radio Telephone license included calculating by slide rule. Fortunately, I picked up a used HP-35 calculator for $320 before I actually took the FCC test. The test WITH the calculator took me 4 hours and I ran out of battery at the end of the test. I’ve installed a new shell server, anduinos.eskimo.com. This is a debian derived server similar to popOS except the default graphical environment is Gnome configured to look like Windows. Unfortunately this environment does not seem to work if using vnc or x2go, instead you just get default mate or gnome environments. Also at present, rdp protocol is not working on this new server, I've even gone so far as compiling xrdp from source, no help.

it looks like the rough equivalent is $5/month autopay in "shell" but none of this says how much ram or CPU i can use. that's why i asked about "equivalent of a raspberry pi" which is roughly 1 Xeon core with ~1GB of ram and 8GB disk, depending on what service. the AWS equivalent is the 512MB lightsail instance or the defunct t1.micro.

We started experimenting with 386 machines when they became available and found Mhz for Mhz the SPARC got about 3x as much work done and initially the 25Mhz bus of the early Intel machines limited them to tasks that were not I/O intensive. Also the early Intel machines tended to handle task switching rather poorly so were best suited to tasks that didn't involved a lot of interrupts or thread. But the cost was so much cheaper, we could put together a PC for under $2,000 where as the Sun Sparc CPU modules were $20k a pop and it required two of them for a four CPU machine. If you've got a server running node Javascript you may want to skip Linux kernel 6.14.6. I've installed it on about 25 machines and it's been stable on all but two, and two which have been unstable also happen to be the only two running node applications. I do not know exactly what is wrong with the kernel because the failure mode is one where it locks up hard, does not reboot, does not response to magic-sys-request, thus there is no way to get a kernel dump to see what it was doing when it dies.
This rascal named Lukas, more frequently called Lukee because I experimented with variations on his name containing more high frequencies (ee being a higher vocalization than us). I did this because cats have good hearing in the 1khz-60Khz range, less so below 1Khz, and he indeed does respond better to that.
I also have a Siamese female named Tulip, but what is interesting about Lucas is that he has observed me building / repairing computers and thus knows I use wire ties, so when his food gets low he goes around finding wire ties and sets them in or next to his dish in payment for his food.

Hacker and free speech advocate Retro Guy has passed away.
I have been away from the Internet for at least a couple months. I came to quickly check my feeds and I am sad to have found report of the passing away of a very cool hacker, Thom Miller, known by the handle, Retro Guy. According to his wife Kaylen Miller, Thom died about two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer. He had a years-long struggle with cancer and multiple therapies and surgeries. During all the time of his illness he continued to hack away providing network access and software updates absolutely free to his user base. He was a strong believer in the value of open and decentralized communication for all. His software is simple and awesome, and useful for censorship-resistant communication. Thom, known as Retro Guy, created the Rocksolid Light NNTP forums and server software. He served the hacker community as a free speech advocate and provider of free speech communication networking. He refused to censor opinions that he found offensive or stupid on the principle of the golden rule. He endured a lot of annoyances to provide service for many. Thom maintained the software for years giving web-based NNTP access to countless users. Thom was always helpful and patient with users needing assistance, even when he was feeling ill and suffering. He pushed through his pain to serve others with something he believed was a necessary tool and blessing for the general public.
I am sad to learn of Thom's passing. He will be missed and remembered. I will remember him by continuing to run his software.
