CDU is center right by normal terms, so no, März as an individual is likely not more progressive than Biden or Harris. But because the existing systems that Biden, Harris, and März occupy are radically different, the ultimate effect of their politics isn't decided exclusively by some meter of how progressive they are. Anti-immigration vis-a-vis Germany is very different to anti-immigration vis-a-vis the US, for example.
What I mean to say is that a conservative led government in Europe, such Germany under März, will still be much, much more progressive than a progressive led government in the US (i.e. hypothetically Harris with dems controlling the house and senate). This is because progressive issues like gun control and healthcare are unrealistic dreams even for Dems in the US, while they are established policy in Germany, that even März will not change.
So while you are right that Harris and Biden are, as individuals, more progressive than März, I think that in the grand scheme of things this does not show itself in the governments that they would run. This is also often what is meant with "Europe's Right is America's Left."
I disagree with that. Specifically for immigration, a Democrats-led USA is much more immigration-friendly (at least in places where MAGAs are not the majority) than Germany (and probably many if not most other EU-countries) ever was, both in terms of policy and in terms of how welcoming the population is.

Helloo, firstly this might be long post about people talking void linux hasnt much packages in opposite of arch which has aur, so i will try conveince some people to void linux and will tell also something about package managers.
Package manager is a thing that keeps organized all programs on your pc, normally you would have to go to site, download .deb or .tar.xz and etc. package manager takes cares of doing that and manager also integrates this package with system, so when theres update and something is added or deleted, package manager will take care of all.
Okay, so if its only downloading then why AUR has 97587 packages, and XBPS-SRC (void linux - aur alternative kinda) has much less? It's because AUR is community, anyone can maintain some package, XBPS-SRC also has community but by pulling requests to merge TEMPLATES, but that doesn't mean u can't add your own TEMPLATES.
Wait, wait, wait, what are TEMPLATES?
Its kind of script which makes Package manager do its thing. Templates in XBPS-src and "PKGBUILD?" in AUR are similar.
We have to tell in this script: what package, what version, give link to download and etc.

So this is my way to conveince you to use void linux 😀. IN MY OPINION, void is what people think arch is. A diy distro with learning curve to understand how OS works. ARCH is great!, but void gives you more knowledge of what things systemd takes care.

XBPS-SRC does not look like an alternative to AUR at all. It looks like Voids alternative to gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux… - where Arch maintains all its packages. Nor is comparing the number of packages in AUR to Void main repos a good idea - Arch has its own main repos that are a better equivalent. The Void templates do not look dissimilar form what a PKGBUILD file is either and you can do the same things with writing your own PKGBUILD or pulling them from repos if you really want to. I don't see how void is any better then Arch in anything you have described here. IMO it just looks like it does more of the same things with a bit difference in syntax/commands you run. Nothing you have said here is really a solid argument for using Void or Arch at all.
The AUR is not even that great. I think most people seem to get confused between what is in the AUR and the main packages since they just use tools like yay that install from both. But most people only use a couple of packages from the AUR - it is the package selection in the main repos which is what is so nice about Arch. The AUR is just nice for more niche things that have not made it into the main repos yet.

Same goes for Void? Most people wont read the source of third party packages they install. No matter what distro they are on. AUR tooling does try to help with this but most people ignore it. Same will go for Void. It is not a distro problem - just a humans are lazy problem. Plus even if people did read them there is only a small subset of people that actually understand them enough to spot obviously malicious packages - though that can spot hidden malicious packages are vastly smaller.

I think I actually need an even more specific descriptor to differentiate it, because if you search "drumstep" on youtube etc. you mostly get stuff with those brostep-style midrange noises that is super popular in more modern dubstep, drumstep and drum'n'bass, which I mostly don't like at all.
I'm listening to a ton of niche genres, but TBH I don't really have a good idea which of them would be the least known or least popular.
It's easier to understand drumstep as a subgenre of drum and bass. It has the same tempo as drum and bass but employs a halftime 2-step drum pattern like dubstep, using synth sounds that are also reminiscent of dubstep.
Drumstep was popular in the early 2010s but it's mostly out of fashion today. Some classic examples are Rob Swire's drumstep remix of Witchcraft or Knife Party's Bonfire.
People still produce halftime drum and bass tracks today but they use much deeper basses and sounds reminiscent of breaks/garage/techno, not 2010s dubstep sounds. That style is more known as simply "halftime". Ivy Lab are classic, reputable halftime producers.

I have two wireless mice. One is a really good mouse that served me for years until it got too beat up, and now the scroll wheel doesn't work very well. The other is a newer HP mouse (specifically HP 280 Silent Wireless Mouse, product number 19u64AA) that is a bloody piece of shit and I hate it.
The HP mouse currently has two main issues with it. 1, it doesn't "sleep" or turn itself off after a period of inactivity. It just stays on, even if the usb dongle is disconnected, until the battery just dies on it. 2, it's clicking software/firmware had a fucking stroke or some shit. It only clicks on the active screen; so for example, if I have Firefox open and fullscreen, it will not click on the task bar on the bottom of my screen at all. It won't even register that it's hovering over something down there, it just refuses. That, and the middle click won't work. It's genuinely annoying, because the mouse used to work with no issues. I have no idea what caused this, and my conspiracy theory is that HP just kills mice that are alive for too long, because this is fucking horse shit. I do not recommend this fucking mouse at all for this.
What's funny is, I tried both my previous mouse (the one with the broken scroll wheel), and my desktop's wired mouse, and both worked excellently. No issues at all, unable to replicate the issues experienced by my HP mouse. Crawling through the journalctl logs don't show anything wrong with any of the mice, at least not that my noob ass could tell, and the HP support page for the 280 doesn't have a fucking user manual for it. There just doesn't seem to be one at all, not one I can find at least.
Anyways, /rant. How can I see what's wrong with the 280, or fix what might be wrong with it (or factory reset the mouse, if that's a thing)? Alternatively, how can I fix my other mouse's scroll wheel (Victsing Wireless Mouse model PC106A my beloved)?

Just spotting a quick check you could try, at least as far as the scroll wheel..
Try blowing the mouse out with compressed air, especially around the wheel, buttons, and laser lens.
Most if not all scroll wheels use a slotted disk and optical sensors to detect the position and movement of the wheel, so if dust and/or dead skin particles get in the wrong spots, it can totally confuse the mouse.
Beyond that, if the click on the mouse wheel doesn't work, it could be damaged either way, open circuit or short circuit. If it failed short circuit, the mouse will think you're constantly holding the wheel button down, which would keep steady delivering a signal, running the battery down and confusing the operating system at the same time.
re: spot check. I'm assuming this is for the hp mouse, right? I haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a shot with my roommate's compressed air when he gets home. Thanks, I'll report back when accomplished.
Also, hopefully you or someone else hasn't spilled any liquid on/in it. But if that's a possibility, if you're able to and comfortable with opening the mouse up, if you spot any crud on the board or around the buttons, you can try cleaning that off with rubbing alcohol and Q-Tips..
update: my roomate gave me permission to enter his quarters and acquire the compressed air for usage. blew out both mice, both still had the same issues. for the victsing i think it might be a physical damage issue; the switch or whatever controlling the scroll wheel is broken. for the hp, it's a piece of shit and likely a software issue i think.
I just got home and tried a thing on your behalf, using a perfectly good wired mouse of mine.
I simulated my suspicion that the mouse wheel click button might be shorted out, by holding the wheel button down while trying to left click on the taskbar.
Sure enough, in that condition, it doesn't recognize the left click on the taskbar.

Also, Ilove my steam deck so much, but it is not the most user-friendly for newbies sometimes. You have to be comfortable troubleshooting occasionally, especially if you ever plan on using desktop mode. Which is not required of course, but you are leaving a lot of the appeal of the device in the first place on the table if you don’t use that ever.
I fucking hate Microsoft, I am over the Xbox ecosystem, but ultimately this will be a very pick up and play device. It will likely sell at least half decently (likely underperform their estimates as always). I think anybody saying it’s doomed to fail however is honestly not up to date on the current state of gaming.

Well, at least the base model Xbox Ally has essentially the same SoC as the Steam Deck. The Z2 A has 4 Zen 2 cores and 8 RDNA 2 CUs. It will be configurable up to 20 watts TDP instead of 15 on the Deck, but that's it. So much for "long in the tooth technology wise".
Sure, the Z2 Extreme variant will be more powerful, but it'll also be in a different price category (800-900,-€).
And in terms of user-friendliness: the Xbox Ally will run Windows. It won't launch into the regular desktop shell (by default), and it won't have as many services running in the background which might help with performance and battery life, and you'll probably be able to update drivers and Windows through it. Maybe it will have some preconfigured scripts/shortcuts to install Steam, Battle.net etc. But that's it. Expect to fall back to the desktop mode (or open a browser, terminal and Explorer window in the new gaming mode) for anything more advanced like installing emulators.
In terms of pick up and play this won't be much different to the Steam Deck, with the one exception being Game Pass - but even then don't expect any of the more demanding titles to run well.
The ROG Ally X's MSRP is 899,-€ and that's what it currently costs here in Germany at least. It was as low as 799,-€ though recently, but now it's back up. Considering this "Xbox Ally X" is the successor to it, I don't think it's unrealistic.

Nintendo wiped the floor in the mobile gaming market for decades despite their competitors having beefier specs. The DS lasted for years before we ever got the Switch. Let the Steam Deck mature.
The steamdeck has matured and because of its architecture there is no meaningful upgrade or change you can do to it yourself besides storage.
Valve has made it very clear they have no plans to release another one, the OLED was their final refresh of the design. Their focus in that arena is on bringing steamOS to different platforms, perhaps another round of Steam machines, but they have explicitly said they are not taking another crack at mobile hardware right now.

The DS had a seven-year lifespan and the original Switch had eight. Even living room console have an average near decade long lifespan. So, of course Valve isn’t going to throw their money into a second generation.
The DS had countless iterations and refreshes. The Switch was Nintendo's flagship product. I also never said the steamdeck was useless or done. You know I didn't, yet you pretend like I'm treating it as if its practically e-waste. I was very specific/nuanced in how I talked about it. I don't know why this is such an important hill for you to die on but I think I'm being more than fair to the deck.
If I didn't think I could find good use for the steam deck for at least 5+ years then I wouldn't have bought one. But like the Xbox Series S it is starting to show some age on more demanding titles. It is just reality, and for many people that's not really a big deal. But for some it is.

The avantages of thongs/sandles is that they have airflow and are easy to get on & off, wearing socks with them both hampers airflow and also are fully exposed to getting wet or dirty. Do you also wear a sweater over your bathers? A beanie over a sun visor? Breifs with your assless chaps?
They're cooler than shoes but warmer than naked feet in thongs. Also, people might have gross stuff on their feet (e.g. warts, or those bad toenails that are apparently really hard to get rid of) that they're not comfortable showing.
My friend is working on adding ActivityPub support to his blog platform (BDServer) so people can follow/comment from Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.
Current status: Lemmy and Misskey can find and follow his account (@blenderdumbass@blenderdumbass.org), but Mastodon can't find it at all, even though he sees proper ActivityPub requests hitting his server.

This article is published on a website which is powered by BDServer. And I'm trying to make this website support ActivityPub, so you could for example, subscribe to me from your Mastodon account. Yet it is easier said than done.
I'm not the most knowledgeable about Mastodon's APub implementation, but having a look at the Actor of that profile, it might be because it's invalid JSON-LD. Now, Mastodon doesn't actually do proper JSON-LD checks, you can follow PieFed profiles from Mastodon and they don't produce proper JSON-LD, but they do include "https://w3id.org/security/v1" in their @context, and doing a code search of Mastodon's source code does show some checks for if that's included.
Lemmy's I am familiar with and irrc it doesn't even check if @context is present.

Seems like somebody mentioned the account on the fediverse that started a chain reaction of various instances requesting a bunch of stuff. Which made it to Mastodon.social too. It still doesn't work though.
The server is written in python and the idea is to make it deploy-able without needing to install anything extra. So I'm trying to implement my own activity pub.
It's for django, but take a look into my ActivityPub Toolkit. It is designed to be compliant with ActivityPub and not with any particular implementation, so it should be easy for you to adapt to your own needs.
This only really works for people who have hardware whose fingerprint readers are supported by upstream fprintd; would be interesting if they (or another distro; haven't seen anybody implement this yet) add a "just works" option for installing and setting up e.g. libfprint-tod-vfs0090 or python-validity (which I use on two of my machines actually), similar to how some distros (Mint included I believe, but haven't dealt with it in a while) give you an option for installing Nvidia proprietary drivers (or just make it work out of the box).
However these drivers are extremely sketch at times so... I guess there's some good out of it not being preconfigured for people (because you have to look into it yourself and realize just how terrifying they are, both security and stability wise, python-validity especially)...
(though now I'm on NixOS where I have it pretty much "just work" through not that much effort, at least not as much as on Arch, and definitely not as much as on Mint which was painful because PPA fuckery)
Fingerprint sensors have been an interesting hurdle for Linux distros. Not one I necessarily would have anticipated either. The biggest question seems to come down to their security as well, given that there have been exposed flaws in the design of biometric hardware that tries to generalize its compatibility.
Microsoft has defined SDCP as a strong standard for TPM/Windows, but there isn't an equivalent for Linux. Match on chip sensors have made things a bit easier, but there isn't a standard way to communicate the validated authentication to the OS, usually relying on TLS.
Now I'm wondering who uses what development tools. I mostly use Qt Creator myself - I chose it because of its good integration with C++ and Qt projects, and I'm just used to it. On Linux I use Qt Creator, and on Windows I use Visual Studio. I wonder what others use? I've been on the fence since I've been trying Hyprland. What I want out of a window manager / DE is lots of window customization settings (borders, animations, etc.), & having configuration inside one file or one directory with hot-reloading (I'm switching from KDE since its config files all over the place). Hyprland is very popular among WM users with a large ecosystem, though I prefer stacking rather than tiling. I can make it work with some window rules, and shell scripts using hyprctl & jq.
I'm wondering how many little things I will need to fix / figure out. For instance, when I open the firefox bookmarks library with CTRL SHIFT O. When that window is open but not focused, and not on top, if I press CTRL SHIFT O again on a DE it comes back to the top, but not on Hyprland. I could probably find a fix for that?
I might be answering my own question but I really want to hear thoughts.
Yeah if you prefer stacking/floating windows definitely go for Wayfire or one of the others stacking/floating compositors. There's not much point in using a tiling compositor if you don't like the tiling.
I'm not a tiling guy, and the tabbed mode on sway seems to me like the best I've used. I believe it's a much better experience than stacking compositors by a lot. Having a tab bar, and everything maximized to it (except what I consider is better off floating) is the best I've experienced. Stacking mode is the same just that is uses too much space by stacking the tabs, so I really don't like stacking mode. So sway tabbed mode, in combination with a tiling concept of a workspace per particular objective (I use 10) and a simple bar (yamber) has no alternative on the stacking spectrum of compositors.
BTW, if going with a stacking compositor, I recommend labwc instead. I found a smoother and way more stable experience than wayfire (some functionality stops working often like sunset functionality, and usually way behind on wlroots support, not a take on wayfire devs, just that I find it more unstable than labwc).
Of course I'm biased towards less eye candy, though I still appreciate the equivalent to basic picom/compton on the Xorg world, which is the norm on any wayland compositor AFAIK.
Sway is definitely great for tabs. I tried it on Hyprland for a while and mixing tiling + tabs was horrendous, it was such a hassle to use that I just stopped trying to use tabs inside tiles after a while. I even tried the hy3 plugin to make Hyprland behave like i3 including tabs and it was better, but there were very annoying bugs... Tabs are the only bad thing I have to say about Hyprland though, otherwise it's a great compositor. If you like dynamic tiling, obviously. Maybe the tabs have been improved since then, it was a year ago and I haven't been following the updates since I switched back to Sway.
I don't know if there are stacking compositors that allow you to tab windows together like Haiku does, maybe that would be closest to what op looks for since they prefer stacking?

1st turnoff for me was the creator added this anime background which overwrote whatever background you had. I found the file and wrote a hook to automatically delete it on update reverting to mt background, only to find that there was a condig option to do the same thing
2nd The maintainer is a bigot and I won't support bigotted projects when there are other (better) options like sway which I know use.

There's an option in the config to replace the default anime background by a more sober one with the hyprland logo (wish I had know that BEFORE doing a presentation on a large second screen for the first time and realizing that hyprpaper kept my custom background on my workspaces but defaulted to the anime wallpaper on the second screen because in hyprpaper backgrounds are configured per screen 😂 ). And no matter whether you use that option or not, it shouldn't overwrite the background you choose. It's displayed only if you don't have any background configured. Otherwise it's either a bug or misconfiguration in hyprpaper.
Definitely not going to defend the dev on the other stuff.

unfortunately in my experience reddit still has more niche communities than can be found on lemmy, probably bc they have more users. they have more subreddits for specific games, cities/states, mental illnesses, spiritualities/world mythologies, art, music, and book genres... the number of times I've searched for a community on lemmy only for it to not exist makes me hesitant to accept this video's claim. reddit still has more niches than us. we just don't have the numbers or activity.

Hello, cant attach image cause of file size, i have fresh void linux base install in tty and btop tells me i use 500-600MiB of ram but my top 3 services uses 7-25M and rest are 5>, free -m also tells me 600M but why this much with not much services?
Are you certain its actual ram usage and not reserved ? Usually when a program requests huge amounts of ram it is not given it until it actually writes to it. Try running free and check what it says.
252 of that 592 used memory is buffers/cache, not application memory. That is used by the kernel for kernel buffers and the filesystem cache - IE files read by something at some point. The kernel keeps them in memory in case they are needed again to speed up file reads. You can effectively ignore these vales as they will always grow to fill your ram and will be evicted when programs require memory and there is not enough free.
These tools are not lieing to you, just telling you something other then what you are reading into them. Tracking and reporting on what is using memory is a complex topic and here used is just what is physically allocate. It doesn't mean much over all as it always tends to be full of your system has been running for a decent amount of time. Available is typically the more useful one to look at as it is an estimate about how much the kernel can reclaim now if an application request it without needing to swap things out.
I'm fine with both, but the left one is quite a bit harder to come across. Seems like a good cuddle is hard to write and/or draw, probably in part because it's relatively static compared to sex.

I have a pretty simple bar: until we’re debating the ethics of turning it off or otherwise giving it rights, it isn’t intelligent. No it’s not scientific, but it’s a hell of a lot more consistent than what all the AI evangelists espouse. And frankly if we’re talking about the ethics of how to treat something we consider intelligent, we have to go beyond pure scientific benchmarks anyway. It becomes a philosophy/ethics discussion.

Many things still don’t work for me just a black screen. I try from time to time. I’m using bottles and disabled X11 permissions in flatpak to test wayland. I only play older titles (pre-2010). The oldest game I have is Total Annihilation (1997), and I also have Anno 1602 (1998). Neither game runs on Wayland, and they’re not the only ones. Some games do work, like majesty 2, but it has broken camera movement with the mouse. Wayland and wndows are too different to make certain behaviors match, so Xwayland is still needed for some applications.
From both a technical perspective and if the maintainers of these anti-cheat will consider porting or re-writing kernel level anti-cheat to work on linux, is it possible? Do you think that the maintainers of kernel level anti-cheat will be adamant in not doing it, or that the kernel even supports it or will support it. I think that if it ever happens, there will be a influx of people moving to linux, or abandoning their duelboots, and that alot of people will hate that such a thing is available on linux.

Yes, Absolutely. But, people would throw a fit. There is probably no way to opensource it without also making it easier to bypass. There would be a concerted effort to reverse engineer it and remove it from the system while maintaining functionality
Maintainers of anti-cheat software are not volunteers. If there was an order from management to port the system to Linux, it would happen. It's just that with the Linux userbase as small as it is, it's simply not profitable to cater to them.

I fully disagree. The thing keeping regular people away from Linux as an OS is not that they can't play some online game with Anti-cheat.
Linux is in a weird place right now. It's actually a perfect fit for non-technical users that use their computers for email, web browsing, and Netflix, but those users don't know what an operating system is, let alone that there are options. More technical users tend to require more specialized applications, and if there isn't a native linux port available, you have to do some research for alternatives, or to find a way to run it in wine.
Windows is shitty, but it's comfortable. And I know that it will run any software I throw at it with basically no research or troubleshooting.

The anti-cheat developer needs support from the distro developer to get their anti-cheat packages signed, to allow them to run in the kernel. Any package not signed by the distro developer that tries to run at kernel level will be treated by the OS as a virus. (Windows has this protection as well.)
Getting the code signed is pretty easy. The only requirement is sharing the source code, so the distro developers can make sure there's nothing nasty in it.
But the anti-cheat developers feel that they need to never share their source code, to prevent cheating. In some cases, they have even have contracts that prevent them from legally sharing parts of their source code (if licensed from a third party).
That's also not a problem. All they have to do is sign a binding contract for secrecy with every contributor to the distro. On Windows, that means signing a contract with Microsoft. On Mac, with Apple. On Linux, is just means tracking down and making separate agreements with a few thousand independent individuals...
So the technical solution is pretty simple, but the contrasting needs of everyone involved make it unlikely.
I think its less a question of the technical feasibility, and more of an issue that we, as users, don't want more closed-source blobs in our kernels. Meanwhile, the publishers insist that they can't open-source their anti-cheat code; Their idea being that if we know what's in it, it will be easier to bypass.

Valve also has server side anticheat in his games (Counter Strike or Deadlock). They are also against it.
Kernel-level anticheats can be bypassed anyways, but they are the easy solution for the corps that want to sell their multiplayer game.
One way I can imagine it being some certified Linux kernel versions that are accepted and worked together with anticheat creators. That way Valve could use the Kernel in Steam Deck or SteamOS, so any game works out of the box. And other distribution users can just install this Kernel too, if their distributions provide it.
Anyone who don't want to have Kernel level anticheat systems enabled on their system, do not need to install the Kernel. Therefore they are secure against it. But for anyone else who wants it, they can. At least this option would be a compromise.

Besides your argumentation that open source is less secure, a driver or program does not need to be in the Kernel to work with it. Does it? Kernel level anti cheat systems are available on Windows too, without being in the Windows Kernel. All it needs is a Kernel module to load it separately. Something like the Nvidia proprietary driver. I don't know if this would work for Anticheat.
Back to your point of open source and code around it. Well they code around the proprietary tools too. Reverse engineering stuff is possible. So your argumentation is a bit weak. Open Source means more people are looking into and its actually more secure and up to date (for common and actually developed drivers).
And you don't have to use it, if you don't like. How about letting people give options instead calling something they want or need being useless? It has a use and reason, so its by definition not useless. Instead using Windows, they could use Linux.
where did i say it's less secure? I said it will be coded around. as in forked and the changes patched out/worked around. The point is that it's pointless to even try. Because it won't work for those who do choose to use it, due to all the ones bypassing it
AFAIK Microsoft have plans to block kernel level anti-cheat on Windows. After the CrowdSec issues last year, they're rethinking which types of programs should even be allowed to run in kernel space.
Edit: I was wrong. They actually want to increase what can be done in user mode, to reduce reliance on kernel mode code.
I'm not a programmer or cheater or anything, but I think the answer is yes and no. Yes it could technically be done and even work as intended as long as the device is locked down to prevent the user from replacing the shipped kernel (which would be a bad thing for users). However, savvy people could (in theory) make custom kernels that lie to the kernel module, causing the module to report there is no cheating when there is. It's my understanding that it's close to the current situation with Windows and virtual machines and anticheat: you can cheat by running your game in a VM and then have that virtual hardware extract secret information or flip bits in the right spots. Most competitive games will refuse to run in a VM for this reason.
You can add your own signing keys to the UEFI and boot an modified bootloader and Kernel that you have signed yourself. So yes, it is possible to "lie"
For such a locked down system, akin to game consoles or smartphones, would be needed. And even those get jail broken and manipulated, so "total security" on there is not complete but easier to check and ensure. Another way to make sure that the code is not manipulated would be to put all those games into the cloud and have every player only play via streaming. All the code would then run on secured, locked down and verified machines.
Another technique that helps is to limit the amount of information shared with clients to need to know info. This can be computationally intensive server-side and hard to get right .. but it can help in many cases. There are evolving techniques to do this.
In FPS games, there can also be streaming input validation. eg. Accurate fire requires the right sequence of events and/or is used for cheat detection. At the point where cheats have to emulate human behaviour, with human-like reaction times, the value of cheating drops.
That's the advanced stuff. Many games don't even check whether people are running around out of bounds, flying through the air etc. Known bugs and map exploits don't get fixed for years.
Sure hope not. If I wanted to run rookits I'd just use Windows. Why bother with Linux?
This is why I don't want more Linux adoption and don't understand people cheering every new user. We're in a sweet spot where a lot of games enable userland anticheat while we don't get kernel level ports (however they may be shipped doesn't matter). The only thing that'll come out of more adoption is kernel level anticheat ports that'll probably work with a few corporate backed distros only and we'll actually lose the games we have today. Because those will switch over the kernel level alternatives too.
The only way I'd like Linux to be a generic multiplayer platform is server side anticheats. It is very obviously the way to go and we are seeing extremely slow adoption (e.g. Marvel Rivals).
TBH I'm not sure wider adoption would worsen things. Gaming distros would probably ship bullshit anticheat modules by default while the others would not, or at most provide some documentation on how to opt in.
I think it's quite similar to the situation with NVIDIA proprietary drivers? (I don't own a graphics card so I'm not super aware on this topic)
From technical point of view it is possible. eBPF already has everything needed for doing that. And I think it can be done with a simple LKM but if they want it included in the main tree I'm sure they'll get some colorful email from Linus.
Doesn't Splitgate 2 have kernel level anti cheat that works on Linux? Maybe it is "trapped" inside wine/proton but they explicitly made it work and people are thanking them on steam discussions.
I can't wait until I am able to give random programs kernel access on my system! That doesn't sound problematic in the least! After all, I have the fullest confidence that for companies developing anticheat, my security is their highest concern! /s

More or less yeah. Though back around 2013 or so, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised by how they designed their Mac AIO desktops, they actually were somewhat repair tech friendly.
The front glass was magnetically attached, so it only took a suction cup or two to start disassembly, and basic screwdrivers to remove the screen and get access to the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, DVD drive, etc.
And yes you could replace or upgrade parts as necessary, none of this newer soldered on storage shit they do these days.
I've lost a lot of respect for companies that solder on important parts that should rightfully be fairly easy to replace or upgrade.
Plus, now the big companies have taken to forcing encryption on the storage devices, effectively locking the drive to the system. Well isn't that just cute for the backup operator that's trying to recover your late grandmother's family photos...
I remember opening HyperCard on our Mac a couple of times when I was a kid. I didn't know what I was doing and couldn't really figure out what it was for.
HyperCard was basically the viewer/player for HyperCard stacks/files. HyperStudio was the program used to make them.

Interesting. I only recall 2 programs when I took the HyperStudio class, where the HyperCard Player was free for all to use, but couldn't make projects.
HyperStudio was the paid program that the school had paid licensing fees to use, and as such we weren't allowed to copy that software.

No it absolutely is and was not. They want to define what that is ESRB style at best. They have no intention of facing anything that could be perceived as resistance to their making unholy amounts of money.
For one thing it will run a lot of existing and proven Matlab code.
Another is that Octave and Matlab syntax is ambiguous about functions vs indexes (has pros and cons).
And don't get me wrong (I use jupyter and python a lot and really do like it) but numpy can get fundamentally weird in the way indexing maps to memory in ways that I don't remember happening back when I mostly used Octave.
For me the major advantage of python is having access to other non-numerical things. It's so difficult to do anything not-numerics in Octave and Matlab or to use even basic data structures like lists and trees. Python is sort of a basic object language that makes some of the things that would otherwise make you scream for Lisp possible. That's worth the numpy annoyances. Otherwise I would probably be using julia.
Oven has been a life saver for me. I've eaten a ton of meals that consisted of baked fries, some kind of meat or fish and vegetables, and it's as simple as putting a bunch of stuff on a tray, adding salt and baking it for 15-20 minutes. Easily beats most comparable microwave meals in terms of taste, texture and probably nutritional value, too.
I wouldn't call "throw some stuff in the oven and add salt" cooking. And either way it's vastly easier than working with pots and pans - you don't have to watch for pots boiling over or things turning black in the frying pan, and the clean-up is rather minimal, as well. Plus, pans tend to not do that well with meat or veggies directly from the freezer (it's possible but harder, which is not great for the post's premise), which isn't even an issue when you use the oven instead.
Also, there's something about baking that makes food taste pretty consistently good, I've never managed that consistency on a stovetop. It's incredibly demoralizing when you put in the work to cook properly and it turns out shit.

The Suicide Squad from 2021. The previous Suicide Squad movie was a disaster and you're making ANOTHER ONE? That movie had no right to be as entertaining as it was.
Also The Batman. Comic book movie: check. Comic book character that has been done to death: check. Everything has to be grim and dark and realistic: check. When I say "everything has to be dark" I also mean the visuals: check. But it was fine, surprisingly.
The title alone makes it sound like a cheesy 80s goofy movie...and it kinda is. But the practical effects are right up there with The Thing. It makes you invested in the characters and the main conflict is really tough. It's more dark and gritty than you would expect, especially near the end. The werewolf transformation scene has some of the best practical effects in film. It's stomach churning.
Now I have four ways to get to the begining and end of a command line. I can press Escape,^ or Ctrl+a for the begining of the line, and Escape,$ or Ctrl+e for the end of the line.
Bit suss on the ctrl-A start of line, because vim binding is A for append which is end of line.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the commands would apply within the zsh, which is a bash alternative, not within the programmes running themselves?
Or are you saying its sus because its illogical/confusing to have opposite uses for tgebsame shirt cut? I can see that as people using a terminal and launching vim would constantly be working against "muscle memory" each time they switch which would be annoying! Being familiar with keyboard shortcuts is what can make terminal based workflows so fast.
It was a little strange in the "line movement" part they were talking about setting vim navigation on the cmd line and then putting Emacs style as aliases, of which I said it's a bit suss as it's too close to vim append.

Reis kaufe ich über einen Shop auf ebay mittlerweile als 10 Kilo-Sack. Spart Plastik, spart Geld, spart mir Wege zum Supermarkt... Ab und zu gebe ich der Familie was davon mit..
Vor ein paar Wochen kam mir ein weiterer Gedanke: Wie hirnverbrannt ist es, dass ich mir immer wieder aufs Neue Shampoo in diesen "kleinen", fancy Verpackungen kaufe, die man dann wegwirft, um neues Shampoo zu kaufen in einer neuen Plastikverpackung, die man dann wieder wegwirft?
Ich bin nun Besitzer eines 10-Liter-Kanisters Shampoo, das wahrscheinlich von Fitnessstudios oder Hotels gerne in diesen Mengen gekauft wird. Den Inhalt fülle ich einfach in 1-2 leere Fläschchen, die ich noch habe. Den Kanister werde ich danach draußen zum Blumen-Gießen nutzen. Aber auch ohne diese spätere Verwendung ist ein 10-Liter-Kanister wohl sinnvoller als 40x 250ml-Fläschchen... Und zwar ökonomisch und ökologisch, vor allem da es ein No-Name-Produkt ist, deren Werbekosten ich nicht mitfinanzieren muss...
Bin ich der Einzige, der größere Mengen von Dingen bevorzugt? Wie siehts bei euch aus?
Ich komme leider nicht dazu, in Läden zu fahren wo man sowas kaufen kann, und online bestellen frisst dann durch Versandkosten oft einen Großteil des preislichen Vorteils auf (außerdem adressiere ich Pakete nicht gerne an meine Haustür, und 10kg-Pakete sind schon etwas schlecht zu tragen vom nächsten Postshop).
Das gesagt, ich habe mir gerade ein halbes Jahr Vorrat an Melitta Filtertüten Größe 100 (für Handfilter) auf melitta.de gekauft. Hab kein Geld gespart, aber das gibt es selten im Laden zu kaufen und wenn doch, ist es oft schon ausverkauft oder nur noch eine Packung übrig. Ich habe auch den Eindruck, dass Melitta die 10x-Größen langsam ganz aus dem Programm nimmt, was kacke ist weil ich dann meine Filterhalter wegwerfen kann ...
I think I messed up ... Wanted to get a lot of files out of a nested folderstructure 3 levels deep and used mv /*/*/* ./ somewhere deep in my personal folders. I got a lot of errors and quick as I could stopped it. Now that folder is is messed up with a lot of stuff (see below) which I dont know the origin of. The good news: I have fairly recent backups
Questions:
Could they be from subdirectories in my home folder?
Could they be from subdirectories outside my home folder? Especially grubenv caught my eye.
Could it be potentially dangerous to reboot? I leave my PC on untill I know more.
Would it be possible to reverse the moving in some way, to put them back where they belong, even manually?
If ./ and ./*/*/* are both within your home folder, you should just restore it from your backup. The command you ran takes everything up to 3 levels deep and moves it up to the working directory, and unraveling that will be a pain in the ass.
I can't say because those paths are relative and I don't know your file structure. That said, even if I did, restoring from backup would take out all of the guesswork here so I would recommend that over trying to do it manually.
Strange thing is, instead of moving folders (which isnt possible without root anyway) it looked like some of them got copied instead. Compared some folders from /boot/grub with the dump in my homefolder and they were the same files (number and names etc).
My theory for why it created copies: The files you listed look like they are all subdirectories from /dev, which is (usually) a separate filesystem. When you try to move a file or directory across filesystems, the OS can't just change the link, it has to actually copy the files and then remove the original. As a directory is a set of links to files, and the copies are different files, directories are just newly created with the same name in the new location instead of copying the directory filesystem entry. It looks like mv creates these target directories, before it checks if it actually has permission to remove the source, but checks file permissions, before it copies them

BUT. I'm also old. And depending on when you ask me, I'll name The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as my favourite game of all time.
The original release of that game ran at a glorious twenty frames per second. No, not thirty. No, not even twenty-four like cinema. Twenty. And sometimes it'd choke on those too!
.... And yet. It never felt bad to play. Sure, it's better at 30FPS on the 3DS remake. Or at 60FPS in the fanmade recomp port. But the 20FPS original is still absolutely playable.

I was playing Fallout 4, right? And when I got to Boston it started lagging in places, because, well, it's Fallout 4. It always lags in places. The lag felt awful, like it really messed with the gamefeel. But checking the FPS counter it was at... 45.
And I'm like -- Why does THIS game, at forty-five frames a second, FEEL so much more stuttery and choked up than ye olde video games felt at twenty?
My favorite game of all time is Descent, PC version to be specific, I didn't have a PlayStation when I first played it.
The first time I tried it, I had a 386sx 20MHz, and Descent, with the graphics configured at absolute lowest size and quality, would run at a whopping 3 frames per second!
I knew it was basically unplayable on my home PC, but did that stop me? Fuck no, I took the 3 floppy disks installer to school and installed it on their 486dx 66MHz computers!
I knew it would just be a matter of time before I got a chance to upgrade my own computer at home.
I still enjoy playing the game even to this day, and have even successfully cross compiled the source code to run natively on Linux.
But yeah I feel you on a variety of levels regarding the framerate thing. Descent at 3 frames per second is absolutely unplayable, but 20 frames per second is acceptable. But in the world of Descent, especially with modern upgraded ports, the more frames the better 👍

Vertigo was actually an expansion on Descent 2, I made the NoCD patch for it via a carefully hex edited mod based on another NoCD patch for the original Descent 2.

@Count Regal Inkwell Most people can't honestly perceive any change in their visual field in less than 1/60th of a second except perhaps at the very periphery (for some reason rods are faster than cones and there are more rods in your peripheral vision) and even then not in much detail. So honestly, frame rates above 60 fps don't really buy you anything except bragging rights.
led lights almost always run off rectified, smoothed supplies, so no flicker. i have one cheap old crappy bulb that doesn't, and i can definitely perceive the flicker. it's almost nauseating.
@binom If you film with a camera with a ntsc vertical reference rate of 59.95 hz you will see a beat note between the lights and the led lighting indicating it is not well filtered if at all. If you have a newer HiDef camera, most of them work at a 24Hz refresh rate, that IS a slow enough rate that you see jitter in the movement, they also will have a beat note if recording under most LED lights. Many cheap led lights just have a capacitive current limiter and that's it. If you power them off of 50Hz you will see the flicker, if you get dimmable LED lights they will NOT have a filter. But I don't want to interfere with anyone's bragging rights.

It wasn't a super long distance, about six blocks each way but it was unsupervised, and that was the norm back then. Have you been to an American school recently? The elementary next to my house could be confused for a prison at first glance. It hasn't gotten bad, if anything it's actually safer than when we went to school. They have promoted a society of individuals ruled by fear.

Those six blocks you used to walk have all had their lanes widened into stroads, one converted into a thoroughfare, and no attention was given to pedestrian infrastructure so crosswalks, sidewalks or bike paths are almost non-existent unless you're within 2 blocks of the school.
We have literally built most of our cities, or redesigned older cities that used to be pedestrian friendly and walkable, into a wasteland of asphalt and concrete designed exclusively for personal vehicles.

@ebolapie They aren't. It's hard carrying six bags of groceries on a bicycle and not going to waste time and energy going daily. Hypothetically it would get me within half a mile of a grocery store I don't like, the one I do like is seven miles away.

A vicious cycle happened. 24 hour news reports every child abduction basically in the country, making parents feel that they're more common than they are. Kids freedom starts getting restricted. There's less kids outside, so parents are less comfortable letting their own kids out, and kids have less incentive to go out. At the same time, the number of indoor entertainment options explodes. As they stop being seen outside, the world adjusts to life without them.... Less crosswalks, less bikeable areas, less parks. With so few kids being outside the house, the parents who still encourage their kids to play outside or go do things become the minority and law enforcement fucks with them accordingly, as in this story, making parents even more reluctant to let their kids out of their sight.
There's some resistance to this. Free Range Kids comes to mind. People see the problem and want to do something. But as you can see even in this thread, people have so accepted "kids should stay inside supervised at all times" as the norm that it's an uphill battle.

First, the article says it was separate. Nobody said, "We are blocking everybody's access to this road because the goal of 15-Minute City is to restrict people and forbid them from leaving their zone."
Second, it was just traffic-calming. They put up some planters blocking roads to vehicles to encourage access by bike, pedestrians, etc. That's not restricting access, that is INCREASING access. By bikes.
They decided that a different, busier road was more appropriate for cars. How on earth does that equate to restricting access? So your car had to drive further, using a big busy road instead of a local quiet street - boo-hoo! This, to you, was a sign that the government wants to confine you to a 15 minute area and never let you leave?
Are the following measures, to you, a sign of nefarious "restricting access"? - An ambulance can drive the wrong way down the street, but you cannot - A bus can travel in a bus lane, but you cannot - A commercial vehicle can park in a loading zone, but you cannot - A vehicle with several people can travel in a special HOV lane, but you cannot if you are driving alone - A toll bridge reads your license plate to check if you paid a fee to access that route, and charges you a fine if you did not - The city takes out a vehicle lane to build a dedicated bike lane and plant some nice shrubs - The city closes a street temporarily for a neighbourhood block party - The city installs speed bumps on a quiet street - The city builds a traffic circle at a quiet intersection - The city puts up a sign limiting the speed you can travel - A highway cuts through an existing quiet suburb, meaning your car cannot cross it on a quiet street; you have to use an onramp and get on the busy highway
All of those technically "restrict access" by your seeming definition. Well, at least by vehicle. Is it your assertion that private vehicles reign supreme, and if the government does anything to slow down, discourage, or increase the cost of vehicle travel, it means their future goal is to create walled mini-cities that folks can't leave?

Why you think that traffic calming is a slippery slope to confining vehicles, or all modes of transport, within a certain zone, instead of just trying to balance the ease of access between vehicles and bikes, scooters, skateboards, buses, pedestrians, etc.
If you want to believe in a conspiracy, why not look at the ways in which the auto industry has suppressed other modes of transport, from inventing the term "jaywalking" to suppressing electric trams to building giant highways through poor neighbourhoods?

Is it wrong to enjoy art made by bad people? I think it's a very complicated question and the answers will definitely have a lot of variation between people. What if it really is a good art? Or just enjoyable? Should everyone avoid it? People still listen music by Michael Jackson, for example, are they bad because of it?
My own approach is that qualities of what someone creates don't need to be inseparably tied to the personality or views of the author. Everyone can enjoy what they like without the obligation to find out details of the author and adjust their preference based on that. It's fine to make them aware of the problems, it's not fine to make them feel bad because they like something that is not wrong on its own. If you dislike the author enough for it to spoil their works for you, good for you. I also feel this way about some authors. But don't require it from other people.

At age 7, I got in trouble for 'acting out' when they gave all the students a basic eye chart test. When it was my turn, they put me on the measured out line and asked me to read the chart.
I asked "What chart?" The teacher pointed at the door. Apparently the chart was on the door, but all I could see was a large white/greyish rectangle from that distance.

They called my dad in and between him, the teacher, and the principal, I got scolded for 'acting out'.
The next year, age 8, they assigned seats in order based off the first letter of our last names, which happened to put me in the back of the class. I couldn't see a damn thing on the chalkboard...
So my parents finally had to take me to a proper eye doctor. They found out my vision was like -4.5, which is extremely nearsighted.
So I finally got glasses, and about 2 weeks of apologies from my mom. Every time she apologized, I reminded her that she had absolutely nothing to apologize for, I was just thankful I could finally see!
I never got an apology from my dad, the teacher or the principal though. It's a bit fucked up that they could have caught it earlier on when the whole reason they gave students the basic eye test was literally to catch obvious vision problems early on..
To be fair, your dad was probably just as scared of your teacher. Same with the principal.
If I hadn't had a dad who was a school counselor in my district used for all the worst problem kids I think I would have had a different experience. I wasn't a bad kid, but I was a weird one. As a result I got to see behind the curtain a little and think office politics plays a bigger part of why kids get in trouble than anything else (well, except actual parent involvement and how you raise your kids). Now that you mention this I think I'll take my youngest to get her eyes examined just to be safe.
Nah, if you knew my dad at the time, he insisted there was nothing wrong with my vision. I actually was already a pretty intelligent kid, mostly from book learning at the time.
Book learning worked great for me, but only because the book was close to my face, which works fine for nearsighted people. So my dad was convinced, my vision was fine.
I was disappointed at my dad for quite a few years, but ultimately had to let my anger go.
A few years later, dad asked me why I didn't tell them I had bad vision. All I could tell him was "I didn't know, until I finally got to see good vision."
I've been testing this OS for a bit, but I'm having trouble where drives are shutting down prematurely, as if the power management is too aggressive when it comes to external USB drives.
My USB hard drive will shut down on whatever timer Linux is using, despite my VirtualBox machine actively using it via Shared Folders. I have to use the Linux host and Caja to wake the drive back up. Like what the hell?
My USB DVD drive will spin up stupid fast to buffer a lot of DVD video, then Linux spins the drive down and turns it off. Then the next time it needs data, the drive has to spin up stupid high speed again, causing the video to freeze frequently while the drive spins back up, way too fast no less for the task. Why not a simple consistent speed and keep the drive running while watching a movie? VLC if that matters, on the host Linux.
Is this a power management configuration issue? Are these somehow the same issue, or are they two separate issues?
@over_clox You are most welcome. This is one aspect I love about Linux, damned near everything is adjustable. Those adjustments aren't necessarily well organized, but they are usually there, somewhere...
I'm on a laptop with only 3 USB ports, and I'm running a physical laptop hard drive on an adapter on one USB port, and a laptop CD/DVD drive on another adapter on another port.
Obviously that's probably pushing the power limits of the USB power, but it's worked before, so I didn't see why it wasn't quite working right now.
But this time I was trying a different DVD drive, an HP TS-T633P slot loader drive. Apparently that drive is extra power hungry compared to a conventional laptop drive, so I dug out my old tray loader drive.
Apparently the slot loader drive was competing with the hard drive for power, and they were apparently taking turns robbing power from each other. The system is perfectly happy with the tray loader drive though, no reconfiguration necessary!

I am a Linux beginner but I really enjoyed it so far. So far. Since yesterday, my Linux (pop OS) only wants to boot into emergency mode. I have a suspicion, even though my Linux and Windows are located on different physical disks, somehow Windows does it's toxic ex lover things and somehow broke my Linux I assume. It's there a terminal command to somehow reorganise my boot files?
@Rubanski If it's booting into emergency mode, there are usually one of three issues, kernel is corrupt, a file system can not be mounted read/write, and this can be because of file system corruption or in the case of mdraid, because a raid device failed to self-assemble, or initramfs is broken. The easy way to fix most of these is to use an automated utility called boot repair, you download the ISO then burn to a thumb drive, then when you run into this kind of problem boot off the thumb drive. I'd start by trying to determine which of these it is, if you get into emergency mode then you at least have a shell prompt, try typing dmesg to see if there are any errors relating to the kernel, then check if all of the partitions are mounted and if they are all mounted read/write. If one or more is mounted read only this usually means that the automatic fsck found errors it can not fix and needs a manual run, in which case try fsck -f -y /dev/sdxx or /dev/nvmexnxpx, which ever the case may be (hard drive verses SSD). If this was the issue after the fsck successfully repairs the file system you should be able to boot successfully. If not, and nothing kernel related shows up in dmesg, then probably your initramfs has gotten hurt. In this case since you are new to Linux, boot repair is the easiest way to fix it. You can also fix manually but that is more complex, however if you need instructions on how to do this let me know and I will elaborate. Even doing so manually though requires another bootable Linux media, does not have to be boot repair, a popos install USB will also do.
@just_another_person @Rubanski On most modern systems neither Windows nor Linux is going to hurt each other's boot record because usually on a dual boot system you're going to launch grub out of the boot block which is going to them find and mount the UEFI partition which is a fat-32 partition usually mounted on /boot/efi by Linux, and then grub is going to continue from a directory within /boot/efi, windows similarly will have a directory there, and grub if it finds both will present a menu at boot. Since both use separate directories on this UEFI System partition, one should not interfere with the other unless the partition is too small and you run out of disk space. I usually size my EFI partition at 512MB and that's always been more than sufficient for multiple operating systems. If you re-install WIndows, it will overwrite the boot block with it's own boot loader, but restoring it with grub will you back to where you were. If you are a real glutton for punishment, you can setup the Windows boot loader to chain load grub, this works as I have actually done it, more as a matter of curiosity than anything else. But I prefer to use Grub as the first boot loader as it's faster and less prone to exploding.
Do you have any drives/ partitions set up to load at boot other than the main linux partition?
A common issue can be if linux is trying to mount a partition specified in fstab (the config file that lists all the hard drives to be loaded) and it can't mount it, it will go into emergency mode. It does this as it assumes the drives are critically important and to prevent any damage to your system. You can mark non essential partitions as "nofail" in the fstab file so that linux continues to boot even if those partitions are unavailable.
If you'd added a USB drive or another hard drive to auto mount at start up and its not available to linux then that might be the issue. Reinsert those drives and linux should boot. Alternatively you can login using emergency mode and edit the fstab file yourself if you know what youre doing. The offending drive can be removed/commented outthe fstab file or the nofail option added.
If your linux install is set to mount your windows C: partition (for file access in linux for example) then its important to know the drive can be locked out by windows. Windows "fast startup" is a very common cause - it basically means windows doesnt shut down fully, it does a fake shutdown (hibernates), and doing this locks down the drive, preventing any access to the C: drive including in linux. If this scenario applies to you, boot into wndows, disable fast startup in the control panel and then try to reboot into linux.
It this works it is still worth using the "nofail" option in fstab for any non essential drives. I personally dont auto mount my windows drive at all anymore; I have it visible in my file manager but manually mount it (just clikcing on it does it) when I need it.
@Rubanski if you have mdraid partitions, you also should add bootdegraded=true to the grub command line so the system will still boot even if a disk fails and an array is in the degraded mode.
While I agree with your assertion in theory, I cannot agree that windows doesn't mess with grub. I have had 5 different issues with grub being overwritten, 1 was because windows and Linux were on the same drive, but the other 4 was simply because I launched windows through grub.
My advice for people dual booting is to never launch windows through grub and instead change your boot order in bios, this has made all of my boot related issues go away.
@Attacker94 The boot block pointing to grub is what gets overwritten, grub itself in /boot/efi doesn't. You can fix either though with either boot repair or boot from a usb thumb drive, mount the partitions on /mnt and subdirectories,mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev, /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts, and then mount --rbind /proc /mnt/proc and /sys /mnt/sys, cp /etc/resolv.conf to /mnt/etc/resolv.conf, chroot to /mnt, and then grub-install /dev/sda or whatever the drive is. Not a big deal. And this only happens if you install Windows AFTER you have installed Linux.

Pardon my ignorance, but why people keep trying Linux phones when you can develop on top of open source android version, like GrapheneOS? Linux desktop apps are not exactly secure.
I can't talk for others I'm personally interested in Linux phones (I have 2, PinePhone and PinePhone Pro) because I do not want to rely on Android because it's lead, maintained and basically in practice owned by Google.
I would also much prefer to have "just" Linux because I know it better and because IMHO we reached a point, already few years ago, where "mobile" does not mean much anymore. "just" a computer with a battery is enough due to the power available.
IMHO the SteamDeck is the existence proof of that.
The "know it better" is, I think, a big argument, that's imo often a bit overlooked. Android does not have that much "tinkers" as "proper" Linux has. For the average Gnome DE @ Ubuntu user, Android forks are fine. But if you're the kind of person, who optimizes their Arch system with cool scripts from Github, you won't get the same experience on LineageOS. I know Termux is a thing but that feels more like a workaround.

Edit2 to clarify my point: I think big downside of Android is that if you want to tinker with it, you basically have to be an android developer. With "proper" Linux the barrier to entry is smaller and the learning experience is more granular. Hence why we think "we know 'proper' Linux better".
Because the Android SDK is owned and controlled by Google. They’ve consistently made decisions to make it harder to stay out of their ecosystem (like the new “Integrity” API).
As consumers, we would vastly benefit from having another choice that isn’t controlled by one of the biggest tech companies in the world.

It's a bit diffident when you don't have big megacorp subsidies (Meta, Google, various local-market apps, etc) & have to buy all hardware from third parties. And perhaps not have planned obsolescence. And upsales. And ad revenue. And frown upon slave or unhappy workforce & other negative society impacts.
Also it looks like an ok phone, low spec cameras, but still the usual dimensions, OLED, enough RAM & CPU to be usable in desktop mode, Linux.

Und da ist es natürlich irgendwie wohlfeil, wenn man jetzt hier von Gier oder Wucher spricht, aber das ist eine Entwicklung, die alle Schokoladenhersteller trifft. Der eine oder andere mag vllt. noch einen längerfristigen Abnahmevertrag haben, aber irgendwann trifft das alle Hersteller und es ist auch irgendwie unvermeidbar, dass solche gestiegenen Rohstoffpreise nicht anders abgefangen werden können, sondern zwangsläufig an die Kunden weitergegeben werden müssen

It definitely makes me suspicious, considering they're a standard 'money above all else' company operating in a fascist state. They don't seem to abuse their power much, yet, but that can change rather quickly.

Yeah, I’m with you all the way — no shade to OP, but the question has a flawed premise. I think the majority opinion is that they’re both an asset and a liability. They’re a huge contributor to the ecosystem and have done a lot of practical good, but I also think the community will turn on a dime if the suits overstep into FAFO territory.

The CLI interfaces for PA and SysD are janky/verbose af and make it hard for beginners to do simple things as well. E.g. try wiring up a virtual device with pacmd that fuses your desktop audio and mic output into a combined source using only the man pages, or putting together a fresh service from memory without looking up any directives.
E: even better example, compare how easy it is to set something up to run in cron vs. a systemd timer.

No. Look at IBMs stock value history. There is a pretty clear point at which Remini stepped down and they really started to see the benefits of Red Hat. Nearly all IBM profit comes from Red Hat. They were drowning and their pivot to cloud was failing. With Red Hat they've been able to actually get a presence in the cloud with OpenShift.
That would be such a bizarre way to interpret that. They weren't even direct competitors. VMware, Oracle, and SUSE would be better comparisons for that move. And it seems to bear repeating that Red Hat is something like 30% of IBM's revenue. Why would you kill off a third of your income?
Why not? Until they have cornered distribution of the software they can't Extinguish yet. EEE isn't an instant process, it takes time. Crush all other distribution first and then killing it comes next.

I mean, systemd-networkd and systemd-timesyncd are both completely independent and are not required by systemd. I use connman and chronyd on my arch box and systemd gives not one fuck.
There's still some totally valid concern to be had over how bundled a lot of this stuff is, but it's not all one big blob.

In particular systemd-resolvd is an issue because it enforces the 512 byte limit on txt records. The problem with doing this is many large sites have spf records longer than 512 bytes and fail to break them up into separate txt records, so if you enforce this limit and they initiate mail from one of the truncated hosts, it gets rejected. This is not good and so I've worked around this by disabling networkd-resolvd and installed bind9 instead. I've actually had no problem with timesync but why re-invent all the wheels? To me it seems Poettering is a control freak and wants to take over my systems.
Rock Linux isn't "stealing" anything. They make a exact RHEL clone for those who want absolute RHEL clone. Almalinux on the other hand is just trying to be comparable with RHEL software and tools. It is very similar to RHEL but they do things like fix issues faster. Some people are weary of Almalinux do to its ties to cloudlinux although that might not matter to you depending on who you are.

I'm pretty sure Alma had a way to upgrade major releases. I know RHEL has Leapp, but it is always recommended to do a greenfield reinstall. Although with image mode and ostree that is changing.
Fuck Rocky. They are a leech on open source. They break user agreements to get at Red Hat source and don't contribute upstream. Use Alma, they actually work with the community and contribute upstream.
Because CIQ, the company that bankrolls Rocky, was poaching Red Hat customers. They were hiring Red Hat sales people, then using their contacts to swoop in and drastically undercut Red Hat because they don't do any engineering. It is an effort to stop leeches like CIQ/Rocky.
I don't see the problem with that. Red Hat is bankrolled by IBM. I don't have any qualms about them facing competition, even underhanded competition which I don't think this is. Contributing to open source doesn't and shouldn't guarantee financial compensation, customers, whatever.
So, you're okay with one company taking another company's work, contributing nothing to it themselves, then hiring company A's employees, and finally taking company A's customers? Not even Oracle was slimy enough to do that.
IBM does not bank roll Red Hat. Red Hat acts and reports independently of IBM.

They can do original work or they can build on others, if they do the latter then they have to expect the same.
Right, I think you're basically saying what I think most of us would agree with. Don't just copy the homework and poach customers. You can copy the homework and add your own value to it and earn customers. Bonus points for adding that value add back into the community like Alma does with their HPC work.

I think systemd has moved desktop and server Linux towards being more BSD-like ... and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.
Maybe we'll end up needing an X11 -> Wayland sort of transition where there are protocols instead of "an implementation."
However, I've yet to see systemd be meaningfully detrimental. Are distros a little less different? Yeah. Has it made my life easier when I need to go between distros? Also, yeah.
I think on some level, we're just getting to a more mature Linux desktop and server ... and as a result consolidating on stuff that really doesn't have strong reasoning to be different.
To be honest, stuff not working when it breaks the standard is unfortunate, but I wouldn't blame this on the tool that adheres to said standard.
You're not inconvenienced by systemd-resolvd, you're inconvenienced by those mail sites doing stuff that doesn't work, possibly as a result of them needing to do something that was slightly flawed to begin with: using DNS records to possibly hold more data than they can per the spec, which, if I understand things correctly, is because of the limitations of UDP traffic.
Not that that helps you, of course, it's annoying and I recognise that.
@dnzm Some of us live in the real world where we have customers that expect to receive their e-mail and aren't interested in the details of a standard, and since prior to systemd this was not an issue, I see no benefit to making an issue. UDP packets can be any arbitrary length up to 65535 bytes (including the header), there is no sound reason for limiting them to 512 bytes.
I, too, live in this fabled real world, and I already mentioned I understand your issue. I just think you're barking up the wrong tree, but luckily you're able to work around things, and that's the most important bit, isn't it?

I'm all for Linux distributions run and owned by the community. With those we don't have to be afreaid of weird business decisions. Debian is a good example, and very democratic. But I believe several other distros are maintained by a community as well, including Arch, NixOS...

Maybe I'm paranoid but it also seems very insecure. I've been to some restaurants where they have the menu as a qr code and you even pay for your food from the website. What's to stop a bad actor from creating a fake version of your website and stealing card data? They just need to create a qr sticker and put it on top of the one on the table.

No personalization anywhere. You used to be able to completely customize social media profiles, to the point of editing your page's CSS directly.
Modern OSes (except linux or BSD based ones which are not android) also have no color or personalization. You usually have the slabs of white on light mode, or the slabs of blak on dark mode, with only one color you can choose for some details.
JavaScript animations on every. Single. Website. I have an old phone (because I don't like modern stuff), and it struggles with almost every modern, animated site. Is it really necessary to add all that js and animations?
No headphone jacks or expandable storage on modern phones. It probably costs cents to add those features. I know phones don't usually have expandable storage because it makes you buy a new one once you fill all your storage, and I know they don't have audio jacks because it makes you buy the company's wireless headphones, but I need those features in my phone.
Why does everything have to be a web app now? Have people forgotten about actual softwate, that you own, that doesn't need internet to work, that uses almost no resources and is faster and has more features than a web app? We got everything backward. Sites that should be webs like reddit will ask you to download their apps, while microsoft will try to code Word in javascript and sell it to you as an "upgrade".
I hate subscriptions with passion, especially for software.
There's so much javascript everywhere... A few years ago I used to be able to browse the internet with the NoScript extension, and it only required a few allows now and then. Now NOTHING works without javascript, and each website needs you to allow 20 others websites for it to work...
I'm a graphic designer, so maximalism and antidesign. It's taking a bit to become more than just a trend, but it's getting there. I understand minimalism is getting stale, but the answer is not going for something hard to read. Even with proper hierarchy the sheer clash of colors, sizes, etc., will lead to a jumbled mess. Form follows function to make life easier.
A balance must be struck between maximalism and minimalism.
Minimalist web design is making me miss the mess that was the old internet. The terrible designs with dozen of bright elements all assaulting your eyes, the blinking stuff everywhere giving you seizures, the ugly animated GIFs whose pixels you could count, the absence of any coherence for colors and text formatting... It was awful, but at least it was interestingly awful. Each website had it's own unique flavor of awful. Now it's convenient, but it's all the same flavor of boring and bland convenience.
I see your point, but... I don't know. Nowadays, attention is a prime commodity. The easier something is to consume, the more people it will reach. And while that doesn't matter as much in entertainment media, it has to be considered when designing for more important topics. Thus, media has to be designed to be read efficiently.
I don't love how media is designed nowadays, precisely because it is monotonous and boring often, but I don't long for the days when I had to look an entire page over for the bit of information I'm after. A balance can be struck through clear layout design and following trends that respect hierarchy. Maximalism does neither.
Though, I feel like I have to differentiate artistic media from informative media. Art can go bonkers, in fact art should challenge established tropes, but design should prioritize function over form, keeping in mind there is some room for aesthetics in there.
Again, I'm approaching this from an efficiency and ease of use point of view.
I do get the efficiency point, and it did improve accessibility massively. I don't want to downplay that. Like not having huge paragraphs of text take the whole width of the screen anymore helped improve readability a lot. Or pages of text over a background image... that was a nightmare. But it would be nice to have efficiency and accessibility without every website looking the same. There has to be a way to make websites look interesting without the design hindering users from reaching the information they want... But I assume that it would require a lot more effort, and that's not a priority for most websites. I guess the priority isn't to look interesting anymore but SEO? Maybe it comes from the changing nature of the internet, with big websites getting most of the traffic and replacing everything else? Like having markets with crazy stalls everywhere replaced by malls... I guess it's easier for a small website made by one person about a topic they are passionate about to take the risk of a creative design than it would be for Facebook to do it.
i have tried everything i could possibly think of, but Linux will not connect to the internet until i restart it. it doesn't matter what distro i use, it won't connect. on windows, it connects immediately, but only with fast start enabled. i have reset the router, the BIOS is up to date, and I've tried pretty much every solution i could find online. at this point i think it's a hardware issue, but I'd like to know if there's anything i can try before giving up on Linux until i get a new PC. any help is greatly appreciated!
Try finding out if it received an IP address, if the driver is loaded or if there are any error messages in dmesg. You might also want to give more information. Which ethernet card? ~~Which version of Linux are you running?~~ And there seem to be some similar reports on Reddit and in some Linux forums. I couldn't find a solution, though.
I saw earlier you mentioned it's an Optiplex, so I'm assuming this is an onboard NIC.
I've never had an onboard NIC not work out-of-the-box in Linux. Wifi, sure, but usually just certain chipsets with proprietary/closed firmware. Dell usually uses Intel NICs and they're usually pretty solid and well supported.
Check to make sure that the NIC is enabled in BIOS.

Try an external USB NIC. Or an internal PCIe one if you're comfortable with that.
I recently had this problem while dualbooting mint and windows: windows was shutting down the LAN hardware somehow.
Had to disable fast startup (in windows, but I recall some Motherboards have also "fast boot" in BIOS as well?) and also in windows' LAN adapter settings a power saving option.

Creating a live USB with persistence is lengthy and even the decent tutorials out there vary greatly in their suggested approach, making it perfectly legitimate (even for non-beginners) to ask for guides that others have found helpful.
Yes, I have 2 computers running off of USB with Mint, with persistence. And I've set up that for my father in law and a friend too. You boot with one drive, you insert the other one, you UNMOUNT it, and then you load the installer. Please note though, that the bootloader will be installed into the internal drive instead of the usb one. To go around this problem, would be best to disable the internal drive temporarily during installation. Then the installer will be forced to write the bootloader on to the usb stick.
You could install Linux Mint onto a flash drive. Though keep in mind that flash drives aren't that robust, the flash chips are cheaper and will fail faster than SSDs.
I had a 128GB USB "3.0" (one of the cheaper ones so might have actually be slower than 2.x max speeds) stick fail on me right after installing Mint onto it and booting into it once or twice, so yes this is indeed a thing that can happen
