A few days ago I made an account and posted a few joke/meme comments that got a lot of engagement. Unfortunately, the replies seemed to be mostly personal attacks on me disguised as jokes, when all I was doing was trying to be funny in a harmless way. I deleted that account and this one will be temporary. You people complain about this site lacking content compared to Reddit, about communities with only one person posting regularly and there not being enough niches, but how do you expect any growth to occur if the first thing someone experiences when posting on a new account is getting dogpiled on? It wasn't my first account either, it was my latest attempt to reenter the fray after feeling like I was becoming the butt of the joke on an account before that, just engaging with the community in the way that I like to. It almost felt like on both accounts my comments were being deliberately mass upvoted just as a setup to be humiliated. Some people have horrific lives IRL that would make any reasonable person want to kill themselves, and are stuck in those soul crushing situations for years and years with no way out. It would be nice to find a place to joke around and feel even just the simulated warmth of human connection without the same kind of nastiness I encounter in everyday life, so I'll keep looking. You say Reddit is toxic? I deleted my account there a long time ago, but my experience was that Reddit is like a big metropolis and Lemmy is more like a small town. Yes Reddit has jerks, but they don't tag you with their third party app and follow you around, giving you the illusion of being accepted with (probably fake) upvotes while subtly mocking everything you say and passing it off as a joke. You can blend with the crowd there and not become a target. I really, really don't want to give Reddit and OpenAI my data, but if I want a real social media experience that isn't being gatekept by assholes who enjoy bullying on the internet because they're too scared to do it IRL I may have to. I hope Lemmy can fix itself, but my experience with small towns in real life is that those "big" (small) fish in their small, stagnant pond don't want anything to ever change because the status quo suits their mediocrity and reinforces their egos. Which would be an ironic fate for the supposed "future" of social media. Almost none of the content, all of the toxicity. Why is it so hard for people to be respectful of others?
In my experience, Lemmy isn't particularly toxic, though sometimes you might run across people with a bad attitude or just might have simply had a bad day. Block those sort of people if you need to, or report them, depending on context.

Delain is probably my fave band, but I've only gotten the chance to see them once (I did get a picture with them though!) It was a hell of a show, with Xandria and Edge of Paradise. Great performances, and it was at a smaller venue so I got to be right up by the stage. It was so much fun.

Album: Morning View Motif: Keeping their alt rock roots, the band shifts into a more relaxed sound in the latter songs of the album. The band has stated that this was their favorite album to record and it shows. This is the album that defined a lot of my life outlook as a teenager. Album: A Crow Left Of The Murder Motif: Guitarist Mike Einziger’s most refined sound. The band ditches most of the chill vibes for a more angsty tone. There’s a lot of cultural commentary in this album. That said, it’s here that the band starts to fade from glory a bit. I just put on both albums and listened to them through. I really enjoyed When It Comes and Clean off Make Yourself. I totally forgot I know Pardon Me too lol. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was interesting as hell, I'm not entirely sure how much I liked it. A few songs kinda reminded me of RHCP, but most were just totally their own thing. Some awesome drums in this album, which I really appreciate. New Skin and Nebula were probably my favorites off that one, Glass was fun too. I'm not sure which album was better, I guess I'll need to check out the rest later!

The Danish Ministry of Digitization is to completely abandon Microsoft in the coming months and use Linux instead of Windows and switch from Office 365 to LibreOffice. Minister Caroline Stage (Moderaterne) announced this in an interview with the daily newspaper Politiken. It comes just a few days after the country's two largest municipalities initiated similar steps. This summer, half of the ministry's employees will be equipped with Linux and LibreOffice. If everything goes as expected, the entire ministry will be free of Microsoft by the fall, Politiken summarizes.

Hey guys i have been using Navidrome to stream my music from my server and its been amazing. I primarily use YT Music because of discoverability so I have all of my "primary" playlists (about 8 of them really, but supporting a somewhat arbitrary limit would be nice) in YouTube.
Im looking for an automated way to download the music and keep my navidrome instance updated with a couple playlists. I started working on some Python script to handle it, but its just not working super well so i would prefer to use someone elses solution haha.
Anyone have any good recommendations? I tried this one but I couldn't actually find the music and it seems to only support one playlist at a time. It would also be nice to download the album art and set some ID3 tags too
Yeah I am using yt-dlp to download the music, and I can set that on a cronjob no problem.
I am specifically asking for better downloading (I don't want just the raw YouTube title most of the time), album art, and ID3 tagging. But that beets.io thing looks super cool! I might integrate that into my existing python scripting instead of trying to build it all out myself
Just to throw out an easy option: if the music is well-labeled on Youtube, you can get pretty close to that full suite with just yt-dlp by using --embed-thumbnail as a stand-in for album art, dumping your files with an “Artist - track - album” naming structure using the --output-template flag — then using an awk or python script as a second pass to add the artist/track/album names to each file as tags.
E: and in case it isn’t self-evident, you don’t have to give yt-dlp a URL for each track; it’ll work fine with a playlist URL.

GNOME continues its long journey from being the one-time linux standard to a occupying a quirky little niche for masochists and corporate IT departments.
Because choices, freedom... that kind of stuff. And I say this as a now long time KDE user who used to use GNOME in the beginning.
That being said, what made me flee to KDE was realizing that its devs somehow think they know their users better than their users know themselves so they decided to develop a software metaphor with a utterly specific way to do things. Not that it's a bad thing per se, they can do whatever they want if they don't hurt anything or anyone else - but I wish people coming into the Linux and FOSS world could have that as a kind of warning when the distro they choose to begin their journey happens to ship GNOME as default.
I was putting up some wall decorations earlier today and was painstakingly realigning everything until it looked level to my eyes. It might be just a hair off, but if I don't correct it, I'll see the misalignment almost instantly and get bothered for the rest of time until I fix it. Has anyone investigated, or is there literature on the minimum perceptible angle from level to the naked eye?
With no exact answer, I do think this will at least in part depend on relative comparison to how exactly level your floor/ceiling/counter/table or other frame of reference is, which itself might not be perfect.

You do have a point, but most phones have one edge that doesn't have any buttons, and most people have their phone in a case, which assuming it's a proper fitting case, usually cancels out that camera bump issue and makes it sit properly flat on a table.
I was defining true level. Squaring with the room is inherently different, and absolutely more important for decor such as wall art. In contrast, hanging drapes to be level to a slanted ceiling can result in a loss of functionality.
Yeah- Square and level are two different things. I can get a cube and rotate it any way, opposite faces will still be square to each other (technically parallel) despite not being level.

A few months ago, a new terminal emulator was released. It's called ghostty, and it has been a highly anticipated terminal emulator for a while, especially due to the coverage that it received from ThePrimeagen, who had been using for a while, while it was in private beta.
A data broker owned by the country’s major airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, and United, collected U.S. travellers’ domestic flight records, sold access to them to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and then as part of the contract told CBP to not reveal where the data came from, according to internal CBP documents obtained by 404 Media. The data includes passenger names, their full flight itineraries, and financial details.
CBP, a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), says it needs this data to support state and local police to track people of interest’s air travel across the country, in a purchase that has alarmed civil liberties experts.
The documents reveal for the first time in detail why at least one part of DHS purchased such information, and comes after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detailed its own purchase of the data. The documents also show for the first time that the data broker, called the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), tells government agencies not to mention where it sourced the flight data from.
“The big airlines—through a shady data broker that they own called ARC—are selling the government bulk access to Americans' sensitive information, revealing where they fly and the credit card they used,” Senator Ron Wyden said in a statement.
ARC is owned and operated by at least eight major U.S. airlines, other publicly released documents show. The company’s board of directors include representatives from Delta, Southwest, United, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, and European airlines Lufthansa and Air France, and Canada’s Air Canada. More than 240 airlines depend on ARC for ticket settlement services.

ARC’s other lines of business include being the conduit between airlines and travel agencies, finding travel trends in data with other firms like Expedia, and fraud prevention, according to material on ARC’s YouTube channel and website. The sale of U.S. flyers’ travel information to the government is part of ARC’s Travel Intelligence Program (TIP).
A Statement of Work included in the newly obtained documents, which describes why an agency is buying a particular tool or capability, says CBP needs access to ARC’s TIP product “to support federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to identify persons of interest’s U.S. domestic air travel ticketing information.” 404 Media obtained the documents through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The new documents obtained by 404 Media also show ARC asking CBP to “not publicly identify vendor, or its employees, individually or collectively, as the source of the Reports unless the Customer is compelled to do so by a valid court order or subpoena and gives ARC immediate notice of same.”
The Statement of Work says that TIP can show a person’s paid intent to travel and tickets purchased through travel agencies in the U.S. and its territories. The data from the Travel Intelligence Program (TIP) will provide “visibility on a subject’s or person of interest’s domestic air travel ticketing information as well as tickets acquired through travel agencies in the U.S. and its territories,” the documents say. They add this data will be “crucial” in both administrative and criminal cases.
A DHS Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) available online says that TIP data is updated daily with the previous day’s ticket sales, and contains more than one billion records spanning 39 months of past and future travel. The document says TIP can be searched by name, credit card, or airline, but ARC contains data from ARC-accredited travel agencies, such as Expedia, and not flights booked directly with an airline. “[I]f the passenger buys a ticket directly from the airline, then the search done by ICE will not show up in an ARC report,” that PIA says. The PIA notes the data impacts both U.S. and non-U.S. persons, meaning it does include information on U.S. citizens.
“While obtaining domestic airline data—like many other transaction and purchase records—generally doesn't require a warrant, there's still supposed to go through a legal process that ensures independent oversight and limits data collection to records that will support an investigation,” Jake Laperruque, deputy director of the Center for Democracy & Technology's Security and Surveillance Project, told 404 Media in an email. “As with many other types of sensitive and revealing data, the government seems intent on using data brokers to buy their way around important guardrails and limits.”
CBP’s contract with ARC started in June 2024 and may extend to 2029, according to the documents. The CBP contract 404 Media obtained documents for was an $11,025 transaction. Last Tuesday, a public procurement database added a $6,847.50 update to that contract, which said it was exercising “Option Year 1,” meaning it was extending the contract. The documents are redacted but briefly mention CBP’s OPR, or Office of Professional Responsibility, which in part investigates corruption by CBP employees.
“CBP is committed to protecting individuals’ privacy during the execution of its mission to protect the American people, safeguard our borders, and enhance the nation’s economic prosperity. CBP follows a robust privacy policy as we protect the homeland through the air, land and maritime environments against illegal entry, illicit activity or other threats to national sovereignty and economic security,” a CBP spokesperson said in a statement. CBP added that the data is only used when an OPR investigation is open and the agency needs to locate someone related to that investigation. The agency said the data can act as a good starting point to identify a relevant flight record before then getting more information through legal processes.
On May 1, ICE published details about its own ARC data purchase. In response, on May 2, 404 Media filed FOIA requests with ICE and a range of other agencies that 404 Media found had bought ARC’s services, including CBP, the Secret Service, SEC, DEA, the Air Force, U.S. Marshals Service, TSA, and ATF. 404 Media found these by searching U.S. procurement databases. Around a week later, The Lever covered the ICE contract.

Airlines contacted by 404 Media declined to comment, didn’t respond, or deferred to either ARC or DHS instead. ARC declined to comment. The company previously told The Lever that TIP “was established after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to provide certain data to law enforcement… for the purpose of national security matters” and criminal investigations.
“ARC has refused to answer oversight questions from Congress, so I have already contacted the major airlines that own ARC—like Delta, American Airlines and United—to find out why they gave the green light to sell their customers' data to the government,” Wyden’s statement added.
“Overall it strikes me as yet another alarming example of how the ‘Big Data Surveillance Complex’ is becoming the digital age version of the Military-Industrial Complex,” Laperruque says, referring to the purchase of airline data.
“It's clear the Data Broker Loophole is pushing the government back towards a pernicious ‘collect it all’ mentality, gobbling up as much sensitive data as it can about all Americans by default. A decade ago the public rejected that approach, and Congress passed surveillance reform legislation that banned domestic bulk collection. Clearly it's time for Congress to step in again, and stop the Data Broker Loophole from being used to circumvent that ban,” he added.

For me, it was the PC game Creatures. It's a life simulation game featuring cute little beings called 'Norns' which you raise and teach.
You can almost think of it like a much cuter predecessor to The Sims, but which claimed to actually "simulate" their brains.
As a thirteen-year-old it was the first game that made me want to go online and seek out more info. What I discovered was a community of similar-interest nerds hanging out on IRC chat, and it felt like for the first time in my life I had "found my people" - others who weren't just friends, but whom I really resonated with.
I learned web development (PHP at the time!) so I could make a site for the game, which became the foundation for my job in software engineering.
And through that group I also discovered the Furry community, which was a wild ride in itself.
So yeah, Creatures. Without that game, I think I'd have become quite a different person.

Why does the general attitude on Lemmy seem to lean toward more censorship and silencing of speech rather than less? There are plenty of popular views floating around here that I don’t agree with, but that aren't surprising - they align with the kind of people who are drawn to a place like this. This one, however, is surprising.

I find this hard to believe since it goes against my decades long personal experience using YouTube. The moment I click on a “Ben Shapiro destroys” video, sure - I get plenty more in my feed. I’m probably not seeing something. What I do see, however, is that I can’t search my scrollback history, nor can I select text without a mouse.
Also, pressing cmd+, on macOS opens the config inside TextEditor (yes, a separate GUI app) rather than in $EDITOR. It’s a small thing but I couldn’t figure out how to change it. Coming from Kitty, this drove me mad.

The US essentially has no restrictions on what parents can do to their children, or pay to have done to them. These companies will show up at night, and take a child out of their bed at night. They explicitly tell parents not to warn the kid what will happen.

They drugged me unconscious, and then punished me for sleeping during “class.” As an adult, I have involuntary shakes and movements associated with the medical malpractice enacted on me.

It’s great - I actually shared it as one of the links in my post. People do need to know what these places look like, and that visceral reaction I have to it hopefully means that it inspires others.
The parents often truly do not understand how bad these camps are and are often deceived by the institutions themselves. Part of the strategy is to make the treatment so outlandish and to use such strange terminology that the kids can’t properly communicate the abuse without sounding insane. Then they keep telling the parents “no matter what don’t listen to them. They will lie to get out of this. They need to finish it, to see it through, or they will end up in juvie on worse.”
When your kid has behavioral issues that start spiraling out of control, it can put a ton of strain on you and your family, especially if there isn’t a mental health diagnosis (often ignored and even then not a given!). It canbecome all consuming. You can’t send them to hang out with friends, you can’t send them to school, you can’t do anything without them likely lashing out or otherwise causing issues that disrupt everyone's life constantly. That does not mean the kid is doing something wrong, the reality is just that it can be incredibly difficult to deal with day in and day out for.
At some point you’ll look for anyone that says “I can fix this. We can teach your kids what they need to learn.”

I get what you’re trying to say, but this is basically just roundabout victim blaming. Well on iOS there’s the Apple health app. To my knowledge it stores health data locally. I’ll double check now.

Everyone talks about how evil browser fingerprinting is, and it is, but I don't get why people are only blaming the companies doing it and not putting equal blame on browsers for letting it happen.
Go to Am I Unique and look at the kind of data browsers let JavaScript access unconditionally with no user prompting. Here's a selection of ridiculous ones that pretty much no website needs:
Your operating system (Isn't the whole damn point of the internet that it's platform independent?)
Your CPU architecture (JS runs on the most virtual of virtual environments why the hell does it need to know what processor you have?)
Your JS interpreter's version and build ID
List of plugins you have installed
List of extensions you have installed
Your accelerometer and gyroscope (so any website can figure out what you're doing by analyzing how you move your phone, i.e. running vs walking vs driving vs standing still)
Your magnetic field sensor AKA the phone's compass (so websites can figure out which direction you're facing)
Your proximity sensor
Your keyboard layout
How your mouse moves every moment it's in the webpage window, including how far you scroll, what bit of text you hovered on or selected, both left and right clicks, etc.
Everything you type on your keyboard when the window is active. You don't need to be typing into a text box or anything, you can set a general event listener for keystrokes like you can for the mouse.
If you're wondering how sensors are used to fingerprint you, I think it has to do with manufacturing imperfections that skew their readings in unique ways for each device, but websites could just as easily straight up record those sensors without you knowing. It's not a lot of data all things considered so you likely wouldn't notice.
Also, canvas and webGL rendering differences are each more than enough to 100% identify your browser instance. Not a bit of effort put into making their results more consistent I guess.
All of these are accessible to any website by default. Actually, there's not even a way to turn most of these off. WHY?! All of these are niche features that only a tiny fraction of websites need. Browser companies know that fingerprinting is a problem and have done nothing about it. Not even Firefox.

Setting up a personal site on local hardware has been on my bucket list for along time. I finally bit he bullet and got a basic website running with apache on a Ubuntu based linux distro. I bought a domain name, linked it up to my l ip got SSL via lets encrypt for https and added some header rules until security headers and Mozilla observatory gave it a perfect score.
Am I basically in the clear? What more do I need to do to protect my site and local network? I'm so scared of hackers and shit I do not want to be an easy target.

But I heard somewhere that revealing the internal state of your server is a bad idea since it can make exploits easier to find. No need to cargo-cult security practices here, chief. You’re not gonna get pwned by publishing your hardware specs. If you’re planning to build some kinda webapp for yourself, that’s a different story - but you have to fuck up hard to get hacked while hosting raw HTML.
Use an SSH key, disable password auth, make sure you’re firewalled (i.e. test with nmap), and call it a day.
This is dangerous advice because docker is well-known for undoing UFW’s iptable rules. It’s mitigated by binding to localhost, but still way too easy for people to shoot themselves in the foot by using the two together.
You shouldn’t suggest UFW at all then. There are other firewall options that can be used just fine with docker.
It does have real potential to cause serious issues, e.g. if OP were to put their server in DMZ mode on their router and later copy some docker setup instructions that don’t explicitly bind to localhost.

There’s more than one way to use docker. Spinning up an official mysql image using the official docker run OR docker compose calls suggested by the docs would start up a server wide open to the entire internet if DMZ’d.

Helloo, firstly this might be long post about people talking void linux hasnt much packages in opposite of arch which has aur, so i will try conveince some people to void linux and will tell also something about package managers.
Package manager is a thing that keeps organized all programs on your pc, normally you would have to go to site, download .deb or .tar.xz and etc. package manager takes cares of doing that and manager also integrates this package with system, so when theres update and something is added or deleted, package manager will take care of all.
Okay, so if its only downloading then why AUR has 97587 packages, and XBPS-SRC (void linux - aur alternative kinda) has much less? It's because AUR is community, anyone can maintain some package, XBPS-SRC also has community but by pulling requests to merge TEMPLATES, but that doesn't mean u can't add your own TEMPLATES.
Wait, wait, wait, what are TEMPLATES?
Its kind of script which makes Package manager do its thing. Templates in XBPS-src and "PKGBUILD?" in AUR are similar.
We have to tell in this script: what package, what version, give link to download and etc.

Also theres way to share Templates with other by importing REPO of some templates, like librewolf-void repo and etc. So there's way to share packages.
So this is my way to conveince you to use void linux 😀. IN MY OPINION, void is what people think arch is. A diy distro with learning curve to understand how OS works. ARCH is great!, but void gives you more knowledge of what things systemd takes care.

XBPS-SRC does not look like an alternative to AUR at all. It looks like Voids alternative to gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux… - where Arch maintains all its packages. Nor is comparing the number of packages in AUR to Void main repos a good idea - Arch has its own main repos that are a better equivalent. The Void templates do not look dissimilar form what a PKGBUILD file is either and you can do the same things with writing your own PKGBUILD or pulling them from repos if you really want to. I don't see how void is any better then Arch in anything you have described here. IMO it just looks like it does more of the same things with a bit difference in syntax/commands you run. Nothing you have said here is really a solid argument for using Void or Arch at all.
The AUR is not even that great. I think most people seem to get confused between what is in the AUR and the main packages since they just use tools like yay that install from both. But most people only use a couple of packages from the AUR - it is the package selection in the main repos which is what is so nice about Arch. The AUR is just nice for more niche things that have not made it into the main repos yet.

Same goes for Void? Most people wont read the source of third party packages they install. No matter what distro they are on. AUR tooling does try to help with this but most people ignore it. Same will go for Void. It is not a distro problem - just a humans are lazy problem. Plus even if people did read them there is only a small subset of people that actually understand them enough to spot obviously malicious packages - though that can spot hidden malicious packages are vastly smaller.

While my Operating System is installed on a SSD, i install games like Factorio on my HDD. When running on a hard disk, Factorio takes a long time to startup and show the main menu.
This isn’t storing the game in RAM; it’s caching it — which isn’t an effective strategy if you actually want fast load times and do any sort of substantial disk IO between system boot and game launch.

Ok I'll take this as my opportunity to rant about a pet peeve.
Wearing a harness in this style of elevating work platform is more dangerous than not wearing one, and having a requirement to do so is part of what's wrong with work health and safety.
The only way someone falls out of this, beyond mechanical failure or tipping, is if they lean so far over the railing they fall out of it.
If I need to wear a harness in this, you need to wear one whenever you walk next to a balcony.
I have two wireless mice. One is a really good mouse that served me for years until it got too beat up, and now the scroll wheel doesn't work very well. The other is a newer HP mouse (specifically HP 280 Silent Wireless Mouse, product number 19u64AA) that is a bloody piece of shit and I hate it.
The HP mouse currently has two main issues with it. 1, it doesn't "sleep" or turn itself off after a period of inactivity. It just stays on, even if the usb dongle is disconnected, until the battery just dies on it. 2, it's clicking software/firmware had a fucking stroke or some shit. It only clicks on the active screen; so for example, if I have Firefox open and fullscreen, it will not click on the task bar on the bottom of my screen at all. It won't even register that it's hovering over something down there, it just refuses. That, and the middle click won't work. It's genuinely annoying, because the mouse used to work with no issues. I have no idea what caused this, and my conspiracy theory is that HP just kills mice that are alive for too long, because this is fucking horse shit. I do not recommend this fucking mouse at all for this.
What's funny is, I tried both my previous mouse (the one with the broken scroll wheel), and my desktop's wired mouse, and both worked excellently. No issues at all, unable to replicate the issues experienced by my HP mouse. Crawling through the journalctl logs don't show anything wrong with any of the mice, at least not that my noob ass could tell, and the HP support page for the 280 doesn't have a fucking user manual for it. There just doesn't seem to be one at all, not one I can find at least.
Anyways, /rant. How can I see what's wrong with the 280, or fix what might be wrong with it (or factory reset the mouse, if that's a thing)? Alternatively, how can I fix my other mouse's scroll wheel (Victsing Wireless Mouse model PC106A my beloved)?

Just spotting a quick check you could try, at least as far as the scroll wheel..
Try blowing the mouse out with compressed air, especially around the wheel, buttons, and laser lens.
Most if not all scroll wheels use a slotted disk and optical sensors to detect the position and movement of the wheel, so if dust and/or dead skin particles get in the wrong spots, it can totally confuse the mouse.
Beyond that, if the click on the mouse wheel doesn't work, it could be damaged either way, open circuit or short circuit. If it failed short circuit, the mouse will think you're constantly holding the wheel button down, which would keep steady delivering a signal, running the battery down and confusing the operating system at the same time.
re: spot check. I'm assuming this is for the hp mouse, right? I haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a shot with my roommate's compressed air when he gets home. Thanks, I'll report back when accomplished.
Also, hopefully you or someone else hasn't spilled any liquid on/in it. But if that's a possibility, if you're able to and comfortable with opening the mouse up, if you spot any crud on the board or around the buttons, you can try cleaning that off with rubbing alcohol and Q-Tips..
update: my roomate gave me permission to enter his quarters and acquire the compressed air for usage. blew out both mice, both still had the same issues. for the victsing i think it might be a physical damage issue; the switch or whatever controlling the scroll wheel is broken. for the hp, it's a piece of shit and likely a software issue i think.

I simulated my suspicion that the mouse wheel click button might be shorted out, by holding the wheel button down while trying to left click on the taskbar.
Sure enough, in that condition, it doesn't recognize the left click on the taskbar.

It’s not “mobile gaming” it’s more “handheld pc gaming.” I get it sounds pedantic but “mobile games” and “mobile gaming” for 99% of people means games released for smartphones.

I mean conservative estimates have over 20 million people using game pass and the steam deck is getting long in the tooth technology wise - valve has also made it very clear there are no plans to release a new one any time soon, if ever.
Also, Ilove my steam deck so much, but it is not the most user-friendly for newbies sometimes. You have to be comfortable troubleshooting occasionally, especially if you ever plan on using desktop mode. Which is not required of course, but you are leaving a lot of the appeal of the device in the first place on the table if you don’t use that ever.
I fucking hate Microsoft, I am over the Xbox ecosystem, but ultimately this will be a very pick up and play device. It will likely sell at least half decently (likely underperform their estimates as always). I think anybody saying it’s doomed to fail however is honestly not up to date on the current state of gaming.

Well, at least the base model Xbox Ally has essentially the same SoC as the Steam Deck. The Z2 A has 4 Zen 2 cores and 8 RDNA 2 CUs. It will be configurable up to 20 watts TDP instead of 15 on the Deck, but that's it. So much for "long in the tooth technology wise".
Sure, the Z2 Extreme variant will be more powerful, but it'll also be in a different price category (800-900,-€).
And in terms of user-friendliness: the Xbox Ally will run Windows. It won't launch into the regular desktop shell (by default), and it won't have as many services running in the background which might help with performance and battery life, and you'll probably be able to update drivers and Windows through it. Maybe it will have some preconfigured scripts/shortcuts to install Steam, Battle.net etc. But that's it. Expect to fall back to the desktop mode (or open a browser, terminal and Explorer window in the new gaming mode) for anything more advanced like installing emulators.
In terms of pick up and play this won't be much different to the Steam Deck, with the one exception being Game Pass - but even then don't expect any of the more demanding titles to run well.
The ROG Ally X's MSRP is 899,-€ and that's what it currently costs here in Germany at least. It was as low as 799,-€ though recently, but now it's back up. Considering this "Xbox Ally X" is the successor to it, I don't think it's unrealistic.

Nintendo wiped the floor in the mobile gaming market for decades despite their competitors having beefier specs. The DS lasted for years before we ever got the Switch. Let the Steam Deck mature.
The steamdeck has matured and because of its architecture there is no meaningful upgrade or change you can do to it yourself besides storage.
Valve has made it very clear they have no plans to release another one, the OLED was their final refresh of the design. Their focus in that arena is on bringing steamOS to different platforms, perhaps another round of Steam machines, but they have explicitly said they are not taking another crack at mobile hardware right now.

The DS had a seven-year lifespan and the original Switch had eight. Even living room console have an average near decade long lifespan. So, of course Valve isn’t going to throw their money into a second generation.
The DS had countless iterations and refreshes. The Switch was Nintendo's flagship product. I also never said the steamdeck was useless or done. You know I didn't, yet you pretend like I'm treating it as if its practically e-waste. I was very specific/nuanced in how I talked about it. I don't know why this is such an important hill for you to die on but I think I'm being more than fair to the deck.
If I didn't think I could find good use for the steam deck for at least 5+ years then I wouldn't have bought one. But like the Xbox Series S it is starting to show some age on more demanding titles. It is just reality, and for many people that's not really a big deal. But for some it is.

My friend is working on adding ActivityPub support to his blog platform (BDServer) so people can follow/comment from Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.
Current status: Lemmy and Misskey can find and follow his account (@blenderdumbass@blenderdumbass.org), but Mastodon can't find it at all, even though he sees proper ActivityPub requests hitting his server.

This article is published on a website which is powered by BDServer. And I'm trying to make this website support ActivityPub, so you could for example, subscribe to me from your Mastodon account. Yet it is easier said than done.
I'm not the most knowledgeable about Mastodon's APub implementation, but having a look at the Actor of that profile, it might be because it's invalid JSON-LD. Now, Mastodon doesn't actually do proper JSON-LD checks, you can follow PieFed profiles from Mastodon and they don't produce proper JSON-LD, but they do include "https://w3id.org/security/v1" in their @context, and doing a code search of Mastodon's source code does show some checks for if that's included.
Lemmy's I am familiar with and irrc it doesn't even check if @context is present.

Seems like somebody mentioned the account on the fediverse that started a chain reaction of various instances requesting a bunch of stuff. Which made it to Mastodon.social too. It still doesn't work though.
The server is written in python and the idea is to make it deploy-able without needing to install anything extra. So I'm trying to implement my own activity pub.
It's for django, but take a look into my ActivityPub Toolkit. It is designed to be compliant with ActivityPub and not with any particular implementation, so it should be easy for you to adapt to your own needs.
This only really works for people who have hardware whose fingerprint readers are supported by upstream fprintd; would be interesting if they (or another distro; haven't seen anybody implement this yet) add a "just works" option for installing and setting up e.g. libfprint-tod-vfs0090 or python-validity (which I use on two of my machines actually), similar to how some distros (Mint included I believe, but haven't dealt with it in a while) give you an option for installing Nvidia proprietary drivers (or just make it work out of the box).
However these drivers are extremely sketch at times so... I guess there's some good out of it not being preconfigured for people (because you have to look into it yourself and realize just how terrifying they are, both security and stability wise, python-validity especially)...
(though now I'm on NixOS where I have it pretty much "just work" through not that much effort, at least not as much as on Arch, and definitely not as much as on Mint which was painful because PPA fuckery)
Fingerprint sensors have been an interesting hurdle for Linux distros. Not one I necessarily would have anticipated either. The biggest question seems to come down to their security as well, given that there have been exposed flaws in the design of biometric hardware that tries to generalize its compatibility.
Microsoft has defined SDCP as a strong standard for TPM/Windows, but there isn't an equivalent for Linux. Match on chip sensors have made things a bit easier, but there isn't a standard way to communicate the validated authentication to the OS, usually relying on TLS.
Now I'm wondering who uses what development tools. I mostly use Qt Creator myself - I chose it because of its good integration with C++ and Qt projects, and I'm just used to it. On Linux I use Qt Creator, and on Windows I use Visual Studio. I wonder what others use? I've been on the fence since I've been trying Hyprland. What I want out of a window manager / DE is lots of window customization settings (borders, animations, etc.), & having configuration inside one file or one directory with hot-reloading (I'm switching from KDE since its config files all over the place). Hyprland is very popular among WM users with a large ecosystem, though I prefer stacking rather than tiling. I can make it work with some window rules, and shell scripts using hyprctl & jq.
I'm wondering how many little things I will need to fix / figure out. For instance, when I open the firefox bookmarks library with CTRL SHIFT O. When that window is open but not focused, and not on top, if I press CTRL SHIFT O again on a DE it comes back to the top, but not on Hyprland. I could probably find a fix for that?

Yeah if you prefer stacking/floating windows definitely go for Wayfire or one of the others stacking/floating compositors. There's not much point in using a tiling compositor if you don't like the tiling.
I'm not a tiling guy, and the tabbed mode on sway seems to me like the best I've used. I believe it's a much better experience than stacking compositors by a lot. Having a tab bar, and everything maximized to it (except what I consider is better off floating) is the best I've experienced. Stacking mode is the same just that is uses too much space by stacking the tabs, so I really don't like stacking mode. So sway tabbed mode, in combination with a tiling concept of a workspace per particular objective (I use 10) and a simple bar (yamber) has no alternative on the stacking spectrum of compositors.
BTW, if going with a stacking compositor, I recommend labwc instead. I found a smoother and way more stable experience than wayfire (some functionality stops working often like sunset functionality, and usually way behind on wlroots support, not a take on wayfire devs, just that I find it more unstable than labwc).
Of course I'm biased towards less eye candy, though I still appreciate the equivalent to basic picom/compton on the Xorg world, which is the norm on any wayland compositor AFAIK.
Sway is definitely great for tabs. I tried it on Hyprland for a while and mixing tiling + tabs was horrendous, it was such a hassle to use that I just stopped trying to use tabs inside tiles after a while. I even tried the hy3 plugin to make Hyprland behave like i3 including tabs and it was better, but there were very annoying bugs... Tabs are the only bad thing I have to say about Hyprland though, otherwise it's a great compositor. If you like dynamic tiling, obviously. Maybe the tabs have been improved since then, it was a year ago and I haven't been following the updates since I switched back to Sway.
I don't know if there are stacking compositors that allow you to tab windows together like Haiku does, maybe that would be closest to what op looks for since they prefer stacking?

1st turnoff for me was the creator added this anime background which overwrote whatever background you had. I found the file and wrote a hook to automatically delete it on update reverting to mt background, only to find that there was a condig option to do the same thing
2nd The maintainer is a bigot and I won't support bigotted projects when there are other (better) options like sway which I know use.

There's an option in the config to replace the default anime background by a more sober one with the hyprland logo (wish I had know that BEFORE doing a presentation on a large second screen for the first time and realizing that hyprpaper kept my custom background on my workspaces but defaulted to the anime wallpaper on the second screen because in hyprpaper backgrounds are configured per screen 😂 ). And no matter whether you use that option or not, it shouldn't overwrite the background you choose. It's displayed only if you don't have any background configured. Otherwise it's either a bug or misconfiguration in hyprpaper.

Are you certain its actual ram usage and not reserved ? Usually when a program requests huge amounts of ram it is not given it until it actually writes to it. Try running free and check what it says.
252 of that 592 used memory is buffers/cache, not application memory. That is used by the kernel for kernel buffers and the filesystem cache - IE files read by something at some point. The kernel keeps them in memory in case they are needed again to speed up file reads. You can effectively ignore these vales as they will always grow to fill your ram and will be evicted when programs require memory and there is not enough free.
These tools are not lieing to you, just telling you something other then what you are reading into them. Tracking and reporting on what is using memory is a complex topic and here used is just what is physically allocate. It doesn't mean much over all as it always tends to be full of your system has been running for a decent amount of time. Available is typically the more useful one to look at as it is an estimate about how much the kernel can reclaim now if an application request it without needing to swap things out.

I have a pretty simple bar: until we’re debating the ethics of turning it off or otherwise giving it rights, it isn’t intelligent. No it’s not scientific, but it’s a hell of a lot more consistent than what all the AI evangelists espouse. And frankly if we’re talking about the ethics of how to treat something we consider intelligent, we have to go beyond pure scientific benchmarks anyway. It becomes a philosophy/ethics discussion.

Many things still don’t work for me just a black screen. I try from time to time. I’m using bottles and disabled X11 permissions in flatpak to test wayland. I only play older titles (pre-2010). The oldest game I have is Total Annihilation (1997), and I also have Anno 1602 (1998). Neither game runs on Wayland, and they’re not the only ones. Some games do work, like majesty 2, but it has broken camera movement with the mouse. Wayland and wndows are too different to make certain behaviors match, so Xwayland is still needed for some applications.
From both a technical perspective and if the maintainers of these anti-cheat will consider porting or re-writing kernel level anti-cheat to work on linux, is it possible? Yes, Absolutely. But, people would throw a fit. There is probably no way to opensource it without also making it easier to bypass. There would be a concerted effort to reverse engineer it and remove it from the system while maintaining functionality
Maintainers of anti-cheat software are not volunteers. If there was an order from management to port the system to Linux, it would happen. It's just that with the Linux userbase as small as it is, it's simply not profitable to cater to them.

I fully disagree. The thing keeping regular people away from Linux as an OS is not that they can't play some online game with Anti-cheat.
Linux is in a weird place right now. It's actually a perfect fit for non-technical users that use their computers for email, web browsing, and Netflix, but those users don't know what an operating system is, let alone that there are options. More technical users tend to require more specialized applications, and if there isn't a native linux port available, you have to do some research for alternatives, or to find a way to run it in wine.
Windows is shitty, but it's comfortable. And I know that it will run any software I throw at it with basically no research or troubleshooting.

Now I'm going to nerd out a bit about it:
To expand on your points above (for OP), there's an impasse here between the anti-cheat developer and the distro developers.
The anti-cheat developer needs support from the distro developer to get their anti-cheat packages signed, to allow them to run in the kernel. Any package not signed by the distro developer that tries to run at kernel level will be treated by the OS as a virus. (Windows has this protection as well.)
Getting the code signed is pretty easy. The only requirement is sharing the source code, so the distro developers can make sure there's nothing nasty in it.
But the anti-cheat developers feel that they need to never share their source code, to prevent cheating. In some cases, they have even have contracts that prevent them from legally sharing parts of their source code (if licensed from a third party).
That's also not a problem. All they have to do is sign a binding contract for secrecy with every contributor to the distro. On Windows, that means signing a contract with Microsoft. On Mac, with Apple. On Linux, is just means tracking down and making separate agreements with a few thousand independent individuals...
So the technical solution is pretty simple, but the contrasting needs of everyone involved make it unlikely.

Meanwhile, the publishers insist that they can't open-source their anti-cheat code; Their idea being that if we know what's in it, it will be easier to bypass.

Valve also has server side anticheat in his games (Counter Strike or Deadlock). They are also against it.
Kernel-level anticheats can be bypassed anyways, but they are the easy solution for the corps that want to sell their multiplayer game.
One way I can imagine it being some certified Linux kernel versions that are accepted and worked together with anticheat creators. That way Valve could use the Kernel in Steam Deck or SteamOS, so any game works out of the box. And other distribution users can just install this Kernel too, if their distributions provide it.
Anyone who don't want to have Kernel level anticheat systems enabled on their system, do not need to install the Kernel. Therefore they are secure against it. But for anyone else who wants it, they can. At least this option would be a compromise.

Besides your argumentation that open source is less secure, a driver or program does not need to be in the Kernel to work with it. Does it? Kernel level anti cheat systems are available on Windows too, without being in the Windows Kernel. All it needs is a Kernel module to load it separately. Something like the Nvidia proprietary driver. I don't know if this would work for Anticheat.
Back to your point of open source and code around it. Well they code around the proprietary tools too. Reverse engineering stuff is possible. So your argumentation is a bit weak. Open Source means more people are looking into and its actually more secure and up to date (for common and actually developed drivers).
And you don't have to use it, if you don't like. How about letting people give options instead calling something they want or need being useless? It has a use and reason, so its by definition not useless. Instead using Windows, they could use Linux.

AFAIK Microsoft have plans to block kernel level anti-cheat on Windows. After the CrowdSec issues last year, they're rethinking which types of programs should even be allowed to run in kernel space.
Edit: I was wrong. They actually want to increase what can be done in user mode, to reduce reliance on kernel mode code.
I'm not a programmer or cheater or anything, but I think the answer is yes and no. Yes it could technically be done and even work as intended as long as the device is locked down to prevent the user from replacing the shipped kernel (which would be a bad thing for users). However, savvy people could (in theory) make custom kernels that lie to the kernel module, causing the module to report there is no cheating when there is. It's my understanding that it's close to the current situation with Windows and virtual machines and anticheat: you can cheat by running your game in a VM and then have that virtual hardware extract secret information or flip bits in the right spots. Most competitive games will refuse to run in a VM for this reason.
You can add your own signing keys to the UEFI and boot an modified bootloader and Kernel that you have signed yourself. So yes, it is possible to "lie"
For such a locked down system, akin to game consoles or smartphones, would be needed. And even those get jail broken and manipulated, so "total security" on there is not complete but easier to check and ensure. Another way to make sure that the code is not manipulated would be to put all those games into the cloud and have every player only play via streaming. All the code would then run on secured, locked down and verified machines.
Another technique that helps is to limit the amount of information shared with clients to need to know info. This can be computationally intensive server-side and hard to get right .. but it can help in many cases. There are evolving techniques to do this.
In FPS games, there can also be streaming input validation. eg. Accurate fire requires the right sequence of events and/or is used for cheat detection. At the point where cheats have to emulate human behaviour, with human-like reaction times, the value of cheating drops.
That's the advanced stuff. Many games don't even check whether people are running around out of bounds, flying through the air etc. Known bugs and map exploits don't get fixed for years.
Sure hope not. If I wanted to run rookits I'd just use Windows. Why bother with Linux?
This is why I don't want more Linux adoption and don't understand people cheering every new user. We're in a sweet spot where a lot of games enable userland anticheat while we don't get kernel level ports (however they may be shipped doesn't matter). The only thing that'll come out of more adoption is kernel level anticheat ports that'll probably work with a few corporate backed distros only and we'll actually lose the games we have today. Because those will switch over the kernel level alternatives too.
The only way I'd like Linux to be a generic multiplayer platform is server side anticheats. It is very obviously the way to go and we are seeing extremely slow adoption (e.g. Marvel Rivals).
TBH I'm not sure wider adoption would worsen things. Gaming distros would probably ship bullshit anticheat modules by default while the others would not, or at most provide some documentation on how to opt in.

From technical point of view it is possible. eBPF already has everything needed for doing that. And I think it can be done with a simple LKM but if they want it included in the main tree I'm sure they'll get some colorful email from Linus.
Doesn't Splitgate 2 have kernel level anti cheat that works on Linux? Maybe it is "trapped" inside wine/proton but they explicitly made it work and people are thanking them on steam discussions.

Noooo you can't do that it'd be socialism! Which, as everyone knows, leads to the end of private property and therefore to nationalizing toothbrushes. How would YOU like to have to share your toothbrush?
