Single core, 32 bit CPU, can't even do video playback on VLC. But it kinda works for some offline work, like text editing, and even emulation through zsnes! It's crazy how Linux keeps old hardware like this running.
Thankfully though, this laptop CPU is upgradable, and so is the ram, so I'm planning on revitalizing and bringing this old Itautec to the 21st century 😄

It's not that bad. I run Linux on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, which is much weaker than this. (It's not a competition, though. Just saying.) And that's also a pretty standard device. I'm kinda interested to see if anyone can go below 64M RAM with a modern installation.
I booted Buildroot with kernel 5.17 on a Pentium II laptop off a CD I burned once - I needed to dump a drive once and that was the only hardware I had on hand that could dump 2.5” IDE drives and had a working CD drive so I could boot something other than the operating system installed on the drive.
Edit: im exagerating but I really have 20-yr 32-bit Dell laptops running minimal debian linux. and my current laptop is 10+ yrs old Lenovo which I already replaced its screen, rams, keyboard, bluetooth, usb ports... and it's still working flawlessly for daily tasks, video/music editing, coding and programming, internet browsing 😁

As I can see, Docker is not available in RHEL10 (at least for now). Yes, I know, podman is an option, I already converted all of my services, but for my nextcloud setup.. I find it impossible to make it full functional in podman...
I guess what they're saying is, even though it's "not supported" officially, you can still try and there's good chances it'll work anyway. If you need or prefer to stick to a supported configuration, it seems your options are either to switch to podman and figure out nextcloud, or switch away from RHEL.
Reading the Docs, it seems like PodMan is the replacement for docker. You could try containerd/nerdctl, but podman is likely the best way for you. RHEL10 docs even say it supports the older docker config options
Oh, I see that RHEL has officially dropped docker support. You can try installing from binaries, but you are definitely striking out on your own here.
I don't mean to rake you over the coals here, but what is the reasoning for sticking with RHEL for this project? If you are attempting to use it in an paid enterprise situation, you are better off sticking with items on the compatibility list. If you run into issues with other supported services, the first piece of advice will be to remove docker. Since your are not getting support for docker, I would advise running it from a supported OS.
Well, as I am running my personal server for years, I wanted to test/understand more enterprise solutions except Debian/Ubuntu and especially solutions with SELinux. In the end if I face major issues I will setup Nextcloud to a VM. Thank you for your response

I'm having this in situations where the DNS would be getting hammered - for example my apt updates ansible script, or Uptime Kuma checks. If I switch to IP addresses it works fine.

Remember that Google started as a search company, and they became king because they got really good at it, and it was their only product (at the time, anyway!)
The easiest type of search is "full text" search. It matches words exactly based on what you type in. For example if you search lemmy it would match posts that include the word lemmy but depending on how the content was indexed, might not match lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, lemmyverse, etc.
From there you start adding complexity like supporting AND and OR. You support partial matches (lem returns posts containing lemmy and lemmings).
Add more logic to remove stop words and articles like a, the, etc.
Put in some sorting logic to rank stuff higher (what's your algo? Recency? Votes? etc.)
That's just the tip of the iceberg... this problem domain is so vast that entire companies have been built around just providing searching as a service (e.g. Algolia), and it isn't cheap!

I had a Rapsberri Pi 4 (4GB) laying around and installed kodi/libreelec to use it with my TV.
I need it to do 3, maybe 4 things, but the experience was rather underwhelming.
Jellyfin client I run a jellyfin server on my NAS. The jellyfin add-on needs several seconds or even a minute plus to load the content of big folders.
Jellycon has a different approach, but doesn't let me browse folders, which is a must for me (I use pinchflat to download some videos from YouTube channels. They are organized in folders)
YouTube Ideally I would love a freetube client for watching one off videos or finding a video on a certain topic. The YouTube add-on requires API access, sadly.
Twitch The add-on works great.
Remote I have a IR Mini Keyboard that works great with Kodi/libreelec

Okay so recently on of course social media (tiktok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc) people have been spewing boner misinformation about this console. Before you down vote me to oblivion l hear me out. Yes. The console has a 120hz refresh rate... But people are saying this console is outputting 4k resolution at 120fps docked...... 120fps isn't even an option docked (tested on LTT) and not only that, only a very very small amount of games will be 120fps. Cyberpunk runs at 30fps, or 40 on performance. But people are saying it runs 60fps at 4k!? Why? Why would people just blatantly lie about this information when you can get it actually tested?
Game prices? I understand the Nintendo cult is always stiff. But for the last 10 years these people bitched about $70 games. And now they are just throwing excuse after excuse defending $80 games now. But the lie I've been hearing is "Sony has been selling $80 games since the PS5 came out" No... No it hasn't. There is not one base PS5 game for $80 ever made.
So.. why are people saying this stuff? It's weird.
Anyways. I can tell this console will be a monster in 1-2 years before the $600 OLED model drops. I'm bummed Nintendo kind of fucked the market for consumers. Now every dev will start games at $80 and no one will blame Nintendo for it in the future. (Like if Ubisoft release the division 3 for $80 people will just blame Ubisoft). So the JC Penny's effect is a phenomenon in consumer psychology where consumers react negatively to something even though it is better to them but it doesn't feel better.
It is named after the store JC Penny's who got rid of sales and instead lower prices to what they would be on sale all the time. This was better for the consumer but consumers liked sales so they hated it.
I remember someone talking about an airline that advertised very low prices up-front but then added tons of fees for every individual thing, and when adding all the fees up for the service you'd expect with any other airline the end price would be the same. However, given that all the services/fees are technically optional, this is actually an ideal pricing model since you don't have to pay for any services you don't want.
How so? I feel it is an example of the effect because customers are drawn in with a low price and are surprised by a plethora of seemingly-sneaky fees, which take up a large portion of the total bill. Customers feel negatively about the long list of fees and the implication that they've been tricked, but they wouldn't think twice if the fees were just included in the base price. It is against their best interest to be automatically and opaquely charged for all regular services (i.e. normal airlines) instead of being transparently given the option to forego those that they do not care about (i.e., fee-based airline).
My partner and I are running Manjaro and very new to it. Trying to switch as much as possible over to daily use with Manjaro. We have pipewire, not pulseaudio
We record multiple times a week on OBS, and my partner and I are in the same room. We have two mics side by side both inputs going into my PC. Linux, and therefore OBS, are recognizing the two mic inputs separately as you might expect.
OBS can set up both of these separate inputs, but the issue is we're having significant problems with echo and the noise suppression/noise gates are not sufficient.
This was not an issue on windows, where we used Voicemeeter to combine our inputs into one mic for OBS. I am looking to emulate that on Linux to see if it solves our problems.
We have tried a mic merge sink, but it creates an OUTPUT device, not an input device.
SOLUTION: QPWGraph was the answer (or something like it, Helvum was also recommended) While it looks intimidating at first you just need to understand it's a series of outputs and inputs and you play mix and match. This allowed us to take the outputs of the mics and connect them directly to a single OBS mic source. This 100% did all that Voicemeeter was doing for us, and the results were also the same.
We do not experience echo, overlap, feedback, or any of the issues we were having by adding the two mics separately in OBS. Our issue was NOT the setup, as some people focused on here. As soon as we got the mics going into that same input, all was good and we successfully ran a recording session 100% in Manjaro.
In the end, this did everything we wanted from Voicemeeter + MORE, as I can now isolate different outputs as well. So for instance in recordings I can manage the volume of discord and the background music separately. So this was an amazing solution and the result was exactly what was needed, and ultimately was much easier than Voicemeeter.

It sounds like your issue is that each microphone is picking up the other person's voice. If your software is insufficient to handle this, I'd move or change the microphones.
I can think of some commercial audio processors that can help with that, but they are super pricey.
I can't think of a linux application that has this capability.
One way to help with this as far as inexpensive hardware is to make sure you're using cardioid dynamic microphones, and not omnidirectional condenser microphones. Cardioid dynamic mics generally pick up audio directionally, like from the "front". You have to be right up on the mic in order to have it record any type of audio. They generally wont pick up environmental sound from anything more than a few feet away.
The room is not professionally treated for sound, but we do have one wall (behind the mics) 90% covered with 2" sound dampening foam. Lots of stuff on the other walls, rugs, etc. It is not a bare-bones room. Our mics are good quality cardioid mics and while our setups are not 180° back-to-back, the mics point away from each other when in use. I don't know if I can explain well enough with words, but we sit side-by-side with the mics between us on arms. They swing down between us, stretch out towards us, and point away from each other. They are about 1.5 to 2 feet apart from each other, pointed away, when in use.
Hey, thought you might want to just know, or for the sake of anyone else find this in the future, there are software solutions. Multiple in fact. Solution on the post. Worked perfect, not echo/bleed whatever you want to call it. It was, in fact, nothing to do with the setup of our rooms and mics.

We have a setup that works fine with Windows, so I refuse accept that we cannot make it work the same way with Linux. I feel like a lot of people here are not focusing on the main questions we had about how we can achieve a goal.
We figured out how to merge the mic inputs into a single sink, but it's an output. We used this post to achieve it. This helps us, and works for Discord. On Discord the echo is not a problem, but it's using the built in Krisp to do noise suppression, so that might be part of it.
On Windows, as described in OP, we used VoiceMeteer to combine the inputs. It's possible this was achieving some kind of noise suppression too, but I don't see how or why that would be the case. Either way, in Windows, there is no echo problem. We use the same exact setup to be on Discord and record our inputs through OBS without any echo.

We have excellent mics and set up, and we run this set up for years just fine on windows. So all the assistance I am looking for is how to combine our inputs into one on Manjaro.
A software solution is fine for us. We cannot change mic arrangement any more than it already is due to physical restraints in room. The mics are faced away from each other. They are good quality XLR mics and run through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

We play TTRPGs online via Discord and FoundryVTT, and record the sessions. We use OBS to capture webcams on Discord, the virutal tabletop, desktop audio for other people's voices/music from the vtt, and mic audio for our voices.
On Windows, we used Voicemeteer to combine our mics. We could use this resulting combination for both OBS and Discord. Since we cannot find similar software so far for linux, we came across the solution I linked above. It works for getting our mics to be combined into one for Discord, but doesn't show up as an input in OBS. We cannot get OBS to "listen to" the combined sink output.
So, instead, we just set them up as two different mics in OBS. This would be fine, except the recording as the echo problem. Over Discord, I assume because it's getting Krisp noise suppression applied, there is no echo. But after listening to the OBS recording, there is echo. So, a software solution to noise/echo suppress might be what we need as well, but that's why we're asking for help.
Voicemeteer was taking our two mics and turning them into a single source that we could then feed to Discord and OBS. That should be it. I'm not completely sure it wasn't applying some other kind of filters, but I don't think it was, that's not what it's supposed to do. So let's say we have Mic Source 1 and Mic Source 2. Voicemeteer took the input from both of those and combined them into Combined Source. We then pointed OBS and Discord to use Combined Source. That's all we're trying to achieve on Linux right now.
Krisp is a feature of Discord. It is available on Linux. We have used this post to accomplish what we want to do with Discord, but this solution does not work for OBS. On Discord, others on call do not report hearing this echo effect. It only appears in OBS recording when we use Mic Source 1 and Mic Source 2. I am not convinced that Krisp is a factor here, as we have tested with it off, but I felt it was worth mentioning. It seems to have confused the situation though.

Never done anything with 2 mics, so I'll just throw a vague suggestion: there's Helvum to combine the mic inputs and then Easy Effects that can apply a few noise suppression filters that can do world of a difference, maybe the first isn't even necessary, while the second us the core and can be tweaked a lot

Kerrigan
The Zerg Queen of Blades herself. If you’re into Starcraft—and millions are—Kerrigan is the face you remember. Blizzard made her the ultimate badass, and she wears it well.

Geralt first found fame on PC. The original Witcher didn’t even get a console port, so for a while Geralt was our little secret. Now he’s everywhere, but if you played those early games, he still feels like a PC icon.

Portal’s silent protagonist. You only ever see her in reflections or through portals, but somehow she sticks in your memory anyway. If there’s ever a Hall of Fame for "quietly iconic," Chell gets a spot.

As a pc gamer, I disagree with the premise. PC gaming doesn't have a mascot squad because PC Gaming isn't a monolith, whereas Nintendo (or Xbox or Playstation) is.

I have just installed Hyprland (love it to bits so far) but I have run into my first problem. When I try to start Cities Skylines on Hyprland, it doesn't start. It says it's running on Steam but the Launcher Window is nowhere to be seen.

People like to blame games like this for the Great Video Game Crash. But I say no way. This game has charm. It's got bounce (literally). It's got bright colors. Oddly, this was made by Mattel Electronics for their M Network imprint, which they used for systems that weren't published for Intellivision. In this case, Kool-Aid Man was an Atari 2600. And I don't understand why this game wasn't available for Mattel's own console. Was Kool-Aid Man too cool for those dweebs who played Intellivision?

Why software do you use in your day-to-day computing which might not be well-known?
For me, there are ~~two~~ three things for personal information management:
for shopping receipts, notes and such, I write them down using vim on a small Gemini PDA with a keyboard. I transfer them via scp to a Raspberry Pi home server on from there to my main PC. Because it runs on SailFish OS, it also runs calendar (via CalDav) and mail nicely - and without any FAANG server.
for things like manuals and stuff that is needed every few months ("what was just the number of our gas meter?" "what is the process to clean the dishwasher?") , I have a Gollum Wikirunning on Laptop and home server. This is a very simple web wiki which supports several markup languages (like Markdown, MediaWiki, reStructuredText, and Creole), and stores them via git. For me, it is perfect to organize personal information around the home.
for work, I use Zim wiki. It is very nice for collecting and organizing snippets of information.
oh, and I love Inkscape(a powerful vector drawing program), Xournal (a program you can write with a tablet on and annotate PDFs), and Shotwell (a simple photo manager). The great thing about Shotwell is that it supports nicely to filter your photos by quality - and doing that persistently makes you a better photographer.
xpipe – I use it to SSH into any of my servers, cluster nodes or directly into docker containers without having to remember hostnames, IPs, users. It can also bring your useful scripts to said ssh session without "installing" them on the target device, which is great because you don't have to set it up for every new server. Also the dev is a really nice guy.
Portmaster + SPN – I use it to route each app through different VPN paths with multihop support and per app firewall rules. (e.g. one app via Denmark, another via a random country, third app no VPN, fourth app gets no internet at all etc.) It really gives you full control over the traffic. afaik there is no other all in one app like this.
wdfs - It's an old project that is patched by this random github user. It's the only way I found to mount a webDAV storage cleanly into a directory from a bash script without fucking with my fstab or being root or giving specific privileges to my user. I mount it from a bash script because that way I can use KDE wallet to store the credentials instead of having a plain file somewhere on my fs, the script waits until the wallet is unlocked, then reads the credentials from it and mounts the webDAV to a path in my home. That is more accessible to apps (e.g. recent files) instead of doing it via Dolphin, which generates a random string in the path when mounting network storage.

Herbstluftwm, the window manager. I used i3 for a decade, then bspwm for a few months, then landed on hlwm which I've been happily using for over a year. I don't foresee changing until I'm forced to switch to Wayland. I've used almost every window manager and DE available for Linux and Solaris. Hlwm has things I can no longer live without:
It's entirely configuration-file-less, which means the CLI client is the first class citizen for C&C.
It's tiled and keyboard controllable is, again, a first-class citizen
It has a sane tree model, with no weird exceptions
It's stable
It's fast and small. You never see it in top, sorting either by CPU or memory
Zsh, the shell, in which I run 90% of my applications (the regular exceptions being the Luakit browser and Factorio, the game. everything else is CLI or a TUI). Zsh is bash backwards compatible, and it has a bunch of extra convenience syntax that makes scripting more powerful, pushing out the border where switching to a real programming language is necessary. I have lived in sh, bash, and csh over my life, and I've tried fish and a number of others; the rich data model for process communication is compelling, but I've always discovered it lacking, so on zsh I remain.
Tmux, the terminal multiplexer, which is (almost) invariably the first child of every terminal (rio -e 'tmux attach -t#'). Because terminals crash, because it survives session restarts, because it lets me log in remotely and continue what I started in my desktop, and because it works over ssh and having a consistent multiplexer environment across machines is nice. I used session for years before discovering tmux, and have tried almost every other terminal multiplexer; and none add any significant value for me over tmux.
Helix, the editor in which I spend most of my time. Because I started with emacs and used it for years before switching to vim. Then I used vim for decades before switching to Kakoune. Then I used Kakoune for about 2 years before switching to helix. Kakoune was too much like Emacs for my taste: heavy on chording, light on modality. Helix is much more like vim: lighter on chording, more mode-driven. Chording aggravates my carpel tunnel, and I'm more comfortable in modal editors. I switched from vim because the plugins necessary to be a competent development environment got insane, and my vim was starting to take as long to start up as emacs, which was unacceptable. Also, LSP integration was super flaky and broke every six months; it's what initially drove me to Kakoune.
I'm currently using Rio as my terminal. It has bugs, but it's actively developed and regularly releases will fix one more thing. It has both ligature and sixel support, and it's wildly fast and far, far less memory intensive than either kitty or ghostty, which are both pretty fat. I am not including it in "the list" because some remaining bugs are pretty big, like randomly crashing when it gets resized or sees some sequence of asci escape codes. It's not much of an issue because I run everything in tmux, and it crashes less with every release, but I hesitate to recommend it until it's more stable.
+1 for helix. I was new to linux and TUI editors. The vim tutor was a good intro to the concept of modal editors, but needed lsp and syntax highlighting. At the time I struggled a lot with configs, so neovim was out. Helix is just a fantastic, batteries included experience. Approachable for beginners, but feature rich for novices.
GNU parallel, to run commands on all cores, and for its filename pattern substitution.
For example: ls *.flac | parallel ffmpeg -i {} {.}.mp3 encodes a directory of FLAC files to MP3. parallel -a <(ls *.flac) -a <(ls *.mp3) --xapply copytags {1} {2} then copies each FLAC file's metadata to the corresponding MP3 file (which ffmpeg already does, just to illustrate the --xapply option).

gnome-network-displays let's you cast your screen to a wireless display (Miracast) or to a Chromecast device.
It works with KDE no problem and even under Wayland.
It creates a virtual display that can be organized like any other display: unify with another screen or extend the desktop using your DE's default method/UI. And then it uses standard screen sharing conventions to send content to that virtual display.
I don't know what kind of dark arts the developer(s) employed to make this possible, but the end result is simple wireless display in Linux that just works! A MUST for using Linux in a business setting.
GNU Stow, definitely. I can't stress enough how wonderful this app has been for my sanity. I use it to manage my dotfiles and personal data.
I made one dotfiles folder, which contains home, etc and usr subfolders. I put all my configs in it (dotfiles, themes, custom keyboard layouts, etc) in the relevant subfolders, then with Stow I symlink dotfiles/home to /home/username, dotfiles/etc to /etc and dotfiles/usr to /usr, and poof symlinks are created for everything in it. That way all my configs are in one folder, I can sync it to my NAS easily, make it a git repo for version control, and even upload it to github. It's amazing 🥰 I also made a personal folder which contains Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc, all symlinked to /home/username/Documents and such, so I only have one folder to back up for my personal data. Yes I'm very lazy and hate doing backups 😅
Rofi (or here for the X11 version) : It's the best app launcher by miles, even if I used a DE I'd still use rofi. But I also use it for a lot of other stuff that it's much less well known for: the run mode for launching scripts and other executables, the ssh mode for ssh, rofi-calc for a very light and fast calculator that understand natural language, rofi-games as a games launcher, rofi-emoji as emoji selector... Rofi is life, rofi is love, rofi is God.
Libation to liberate audiobooks from Audible. There's tons of apps to download and un-DRM your files from various platforms, but most only work on Windows. This one does work on linux 🥳
Lots of self-hosted apps for my media server, but they are all pretty well known (Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf, Komga) except maybe Suwayomi Server for manga (it can sync progress to AniList, and there are plugins to enable downloading from online manga reading sites)
ani-cli for watching anime because I'm a crazy person who grew up with MS-DOS and TUI apps make me happy. Also it's often more convenient than having to check ten different websites to find the one anime you want to watch only to discover that half of them have been taken down.
yt-dlp to download videos from YouTube. I use wrapper scripts to make it more convenient to use because I'm lazy, but it's great.
No I wasn't aware of it but it looks interesting! It seems to have a lot more features than GNU Stow. It says it requires a GitHub repo though, so it wouldn't do for personal data, but for configs it looks interesting!
It doesn't require a github repo, you can use any personal git repository. I personally have set it up with a selfhosted gitea instance. I also assume you could setup a git repo on the device.
If you don't want to bother with a CLI app and specific syntax to follow, there's rofi-calc, it's super fast to load since it's just rofi and it understands natural language. When I stumbled upon it I found the idea of a calculator that understands you when you type "30 feet in mm" or "10 usd in euros" completely mindblowing. Props to qalc for making it possible
I mean the syntax for gnu units is literally the same unit expression used in math. m^2, cm, m/s etc. the ft;in looks weird because it's two units combined.
Your example in it would be units 30ft mm , use -t for terse results that's just the final value.
It's definitely usable if you know the right abbreviations to use, and it seems a lot more concise which much be convenient if you're used to the syntax! But I find natural language also has a lot of advantages, especially for converting units you don't see often and have no clue how to abbreviate, like when watching videos that give you measurements in weird units. Plus my brain tends to freeze when something looks like maths, so natural language is easier to use for me (even though I know it's THE EXACT SAME calculation 😅 ).
Again, you can type feet instead of ft and it'll work. You can write 'feet per second' instead of 'ft/s' and it'll work. Natural language has its benefits but when you have a very simple syntax model then there's less chances of it making a mistake.
I don't know if it has been already mentioned but I love bat a lot. It's like the cat command but with colors and line numbers. Makes things a little bit easier.
It's software for budgeting. You can run it entirely local, or set it up as a server. It stores everything in an SQLite dB, let's you import and export CSV files, and it gives you great options for querying and seeing reports on your financial records.
I've got a handful of accounts, so I set up a small python utility to parse the CSVs my banks give me to something actually sensible and readable for Actual. I do that once a month, add a reconciliation entry here and there, and it's all kept on sync very well.

My older brother is being released on parole at the end of this month after serving 11 years and 3 months of a 15-year sentence. I’m 19 now, so I was very young when he went to prison and don’t have many memories of him. He’ll be living with our parents and me after his release, and to be honest, I’m feeling a bit anxious about it.
I know others will mention some of the personal things, so I'll instead focus on ways to help him try to reintegrate with everyday life and society socially.
You could start to try to help with some things he will interact with daily. The chances of him knowing about basically anything electronic you use now on a daily basis are slim. This is one of the biggest daily interactions that many former inmates have trouble with and betting up to speed on in modern society.
For some perspective, 11 years ago was 2014, and the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. All the advancements since then will be new. LTE actually being widespread and usable, 5G even being a thing at all.
An offshoot of those are things like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, etc. which are massive social media hubs now, but didn't exist then. Heck, Vine was technically still around for a couple years after he went in. Educating about changes to media consumption and social media use can help with integration back into society, and suggesting some recent things to catch up on can provide recent and relevant topics of conversation for daily life.

bought one of the new snapdragon x elite laptops refurbished recently. obviously it came with windows 11 and i had to briefly use it to shrink the boot partition and disable bitlocker so i could install the ubuntu concept image on it.
The amount of advertising i was subjected to in that time was infuriating. not to mention the frankly arduous setup wizard.
Even with the slight bugginess of a "concept image" OS, the user experience is SOOOO much better than shitty horrible windows.
So I have a weird situation that I'm not sure how to fix, and it's going to require some background.
I have 4 drives in my machine: 1. A ~15 year old 128GB SATA SSD (windows, ntfs) 2. An ~8 year old 512GB SATA SSD (libraries, ntfs) 3. A ~5 year old 1TB NVMe SSD (nobara, btrfs) 4. A ~1 year old 2TB NVMe SSD (games, ntfs)
I've gone a month now without booting into windows so I figure it's time to clean up my windows install and reclaim/retire those drives, but my boot situation is kinda weird. #1 is my current default boot drive in bios, and it has both the boot loader for windows and for a previous ubuntu install I also had on the current-nobara install, and then #3 has another one (but won't boot when I select it in bios for whatever reason), so what I really need to do is clean up all these extraneous boot-loaders and set one up on drive #3 to be my main boot from now on. But I'm very nervous about messing with that sort of thing and rendering my system unbootable (I know, I still have the install USB I could use, but still.) I've tried reading guides and such on how to do bootloader stuff in general, but I am not confident in my ability to not fuck it up.
Although now that I think about it if I don't care about the windows boot drive I can just pull it, I just need to make sure I can boot off drive #3 before I do do that and I have no idea how to go about setting that up with my current situation.

A friend and I are trying to get a machine set up to work as my school's library's printing computer instead of Windows ones. It is running NixOS. We got it bound to active directory, applications installed, etc., but the issue is that we can't get it to print. It'll say that it's printing but the print job never reaches the print server. To access the print server you're supposed to authenticate, but it doesn't ever give a prompt to. I tried turning off the firewall temporarily to see if that was the issue but it made no difference.
In configuration.nix, services.printing.enable=true and services.printing.drivers = [ pkgs.cups pkgs.hplip ]; (it is an HP printer that we're currently testing on).
I'm thinking that either SAMBA is configured incorrectly and/or the syntax that I put into CUPS for the printer is incorrect.
In CUPS it shows the syntax for a Windows printer via SAMBA as follows: smb://[workgroup/]server[:port}/printer
The issue is that I don't know what it means by that. I know the print queue, domain, IP, and port (although I'm under the impression that I don't need the port for this case), but I don't know how it would fit into this. I tried looking around on the CUPS wiki but it was vague and confusing to me. Any help with this is much appreciated.

I would like to start using floorplans/maps with various device actions on them. This means I need locally stored images, that can be seen over the network. I managed to upload images to HA, but as they need to be accessed with a token, I either need to refresh the token every day (no), or have an image with a long-lived token (also not a good idea).
How have other people done things? Is it worth spinning up an http image host? Or maybe throwing files into an nginx folder inside HA?
I was looking back at some old lemmee posts and came across GPT4All. Didn't get much sleep last night as it's awesome, even on my old (10yo) laptop with a Compute 5.0 NVidia card.
Still, I'm after more, I'd like to be able to get image creation and view it in the conversation, if it generates python code, to be able to run it (I'm using Debian, and have a default python env set up). Local file analysis also useful. CUDA Compute 5.0 / vulkan compatibility needed too with the option to use some of the smaller models (1-3B for example)
Is there anything that can tick the boxes? Even if I have to scoot across models for some of the features? I'd prefer more of a desktop client application than a docker container running in the background.
Ok I know the title is weirdly said but I will explain more here. I tried using reddit but all of the subs and topics I wanted to speak on were gated by Karma, so I searched reddit for no karma sub so I just posted on ask reddit,nostupid questions and I made one post on r/advice which I cross posted to relationship advice after which my account glitched. Turned out I had been shadow banned and I have no clue how. My theory is I posted to much and copy and pasting a post tripped the alarm but the post was a bit different on relationship advice and I did it once, I saw reddit from like youtube videos and tiktok and people cross post to subs all the time why is that an issue ?
But to get to the main ponint of this, why is reddit run the way it is ? In the sense why do they ask so much of their users hurting both the user expirience and the site's ability to grow. The Karma system forces you into a position where to get to the content you want you have to interact with and post content you don't care about.So you have a ton of disengaged user's just punching their time card to get to what they actually care about. Imagine if other social media sites did this, imagine if you wanted to listen to sabrina carpenter on spotify but to do that you had to listen to 100 hours of Conway Twitty, what sense does that make ?
Reddit's karma and age gate systems resemble a mobile game and while annoying when it's done there you understand why it's designed to get you to pay to skip it, but reddit doesn't let you pay to skip it at east not directly.
Every other social media site wants to get users the content they want as easy as possible. TikTok is the best example the reason it's popular is because it's the best at getting you what you want with as little work required on your part as possible. The for you page fetches you videos your interested in, if your a creator the format of the app increases your chance of being seen and going viral.

I'm still dipping my toes into self hosting and trying to figure out what services I would want to be always accessible from my devices vs those that could be awakened by LAN, and which services should be installed at the OS level vs as containers.
As of now, I just have an OrangePi 5 Plus running Home Assistant Supervised under Debian and nothing else. I'm hoping to expand the OPi a bit and also build out another PC (hardware unknown) as a NAS media server and NextCloud machine.
Before I start doing anything I can't undo, I'm wondering if I' on the right track with my proposed setup in the image, or if there's anything else I should consider?
Gaza (Quds News Network)- The Gaza Strip has plunged into a complete internet and communication blackout after Israeli attacks severed the last remaining fiber-optic line, the Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announced on Thursday.
The authority confirmed that fixed-line internet and telecommunication services are now entirely cut off across Gaza, including the central and southern regions, which have now joined the digital silence already imposed on Gaza City and the north for the past two days.
“This is the result of systematic attacks on Gaza’s already fragile telecom infrastructure,” the authority said in a statement. Technicians have tried multiple times to repair and reroute damaged lines, but Israeli restrictions have blocked all efforts.
When looking for nutritional information, 2 ~~doctors~~ guys always show up in Youtube searches: KenDBerryMD and Dr. Eric Berg.
I don't know much about either, but a cursory search shows Berg is a quack and it looks like Ken promotes nonsense like the carnivore diet.
Why are these two so prevalent on youtube? Neither of them are actual nutritionists, but they're everywhere when searching for nutrition information.
Where are the real nutritionists? Why aren't they putting forth more effort to make sure nutrition knowledge is accessible and accurate?
Part of me is genuinely thinking it's because of money. They'd rather only share their knowledge in secret with the people paying them because if more people knew about nutrition, then they wouldn't be as necessary.
Hey there. I’m totally new to Linux. I’m not the most tech savvy, but I’m fed up with windows and want to go elsewhere. For the time being I figured I’d dual boot, and got everything set up on a usb. I plugged it in, booted up Linux Mint, and it worked smoothly. I ended the session, powered off my pc, removed the usb, booted up windows 11, freed up some disc space and did some other stuff on my computer, then turned it off for a bit. When I went to boot it up again, I got this message:
Failed to open \EFI\B00T\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image ??: Not Found Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import mok-state() failed: Not Found
and then the computer powered off. I tried disabling fast start or whatever it’s called, as well as secure boot, and it’s still giving me that. Windows still boots up just fine. Does anyone have any advice? Like I said I don’t have much technical knowledge so a dumbed down response would be really appreciated. I’ve looked up a few forums and nothing gave me much.
Oh also, when I try to boot it and it gives me the error and turns off, if I turn it back on but boot up windows, I get a message saying something was blocked due to a security system I have to disable, but doesn’t tell me what that security system is or how to disable it. It’s getting a little frustrating. I don’t know why it worked once but not anymore.

When you freed up the disk space windows seems to have broken mints bootloader partition. You could fix it if you wanted, but at beginner level its probably best to reinstall. If you need to recover any data from you "broken" mint partition you can plug the mint USB in, boot into the live environment and look in your files mount you old mint files and backup anything you want to keep before reinstalling.
Depends on how much of a nerd you are. If the idea of rescuing your system using the terminal sounds fun then try otherwise just reinstall.
A few days ago I made an account and posted a few joke/meme comments that got a lot of engagement. Unfortunately, the replies seemed to be mostly personal attacks on me disguised as jokes, when all I was doing was trying to be funny in a harmless way. I deleted that account and this one will be temporary. You people complain about this site lacking content compared to Reddit, about communities with only one person posting regularly and there not being enough niches, but how do you expect any growth to occur if the first thing someone experiences when posting on a new account is getting dogpiled on? It wasn't my first account either, it was my latest attempt to reenter the fray after feeling like I was becoming the butt of the joke on an account before that, just engaging with the community in the way that I like to. It almost felt like on both accounts my comments were being deliberately mass upvoted just as a setup to be humiliated. Some people have horrific lives IRL that would make any reasonable person want to kill themselves, and are stuck in those soul crushing situations for years and years with no way out. It would be nice to find a place to joke around and feel even just the simulated warmth of human connection without the same kind of nastiness I encounter in everyday life, so I'll keep looking. You say Reddit is toxic? I deleted my account there a long time ago, but my experience was that Reddit is like a big metropolis and Lemmy is more like a small town. Yes Reddit has jerks, but they don't tag you with their third party app and follow you around, giving you the illusion of being accepted with (probably fake) upvotes while subtly mocking everything you say and passing it off as a joke. You can blend with the crowd there and not become a target. I really, really don't want to give Reddit and OpenAI my data, but if I want a real social media experience that isn't being gatekept by assholes who enjoy bullying on the internet because they're too scared to do it IRL I may have to. I hope Lemmy can fix itself, but my experience with small towns in real life is that those "big" (small) fish in their small, stagnant pond don't want anything to ever change because the status quo suits their mediocrity and reinforces their egos. Which would be an ironic fate for the supposed "future" of social media. Almost none of the content, all of the toxicity. Why is it so hard for people to be respectful of others?
In my experience, Lemmy isn't particularly toxic, though sometimes you might run across people with a bad attitude or just might have simply had a bad day. Block those sort of people if you need to, or report them, depending on context.
Also, life pro tip, people aren't too keen on reading walls of text, especially if it's mostly complaining..

If you really feel the need to quit your job, you might consider making a resignation letter, expressing why you're quitting, and proofread that at least 3 times.

The Danish Ministry of Digitization is to completely abandon Microsoft in the coming months and use Linux instead of Windows and switch from Office 365 to LibreOffice. Minister Caroline Stage (Moderaterne) announced this in an interview with the daily newspaper Politiken. It comes just a few days after the country's two largest municipalities initiated similar steps. This summer, half of the ministry's employees will be equipped with Linux and LibreOffice. If everything goes as expected, the entire ministry will be free of Microsoft by the fall, Politiken summarizes.
The Ministry of Digitalization's move away from Microsoft is therefore taking place against the backdrop of a new digitalization strategy in which the Kingdom's "digital sovereignty " is given priority. According to newspaper reports, the opposition is also calling for a reduction in dependence on US tech companies. Just a few days ago, the administration of the capital Copenhagen announced its intention to review the use of Microsoft software. The second-largest municipality, Aarhus, has already started to replace Microsoft services. Stage has now told Politiken that they should cooperate and that it is not a race. All municipalities should work together and strengthen open source.

Current setup is PMS running on a Synology 5-bay, and another PMS running on a Shield Pro. The NAS server is primarily used for remote streaming, while the Shield serves to my home LAN (AppleTVs mainly).
I've been seeing stuttering on larger files, either using the Plex app or Infuse, and I'm fairly certain the Synology is the weak link. Network performance in the house has pretty solid, though admittedly I could stand to test it more thoroughly. I've been looking at moving my library to a standalone system. I've been looking at the Beelink ME Mini (which happens to be on sale!). What I don't know is the best way to build this out.
I don't want to have to buy all 6 SSDs (ar at least 6x4TB ones!) at once, so I'd be looking at either a stock Linux (Ubuntu or Rocky) install w/ I guess a BTRFS pool for the SSDs (I'm guessing I can use the eMMC for OS depending on how big the install is - that or use the SSD in slot 4). Alternatively, i could possibly set up TruNAS w/ the Plex pp to manage the storage.
As for populating the media, I plan to keep the Synology as the central repo of my data. I have it replicating to another NAS at my dad's house, with movies/music/tv replicating using Syncthing. I plan to also use Syncthing to populate the Beelink.
Anyway, please poke holes in this plan and/or suggest a better one. My main goals are to get the media I'm streaming off spinning disk w/ minimal power draw (didn't mention that above) in a way that I can expand storage as necessary to accommodate the media library. Nothing's purchased yet, so I'm not married to the hardware. I would ideally like to convert the library to h.265 or even AV1 if I can make it work.
ETA: For clarity: I'm not transcoding AFAIK. My Shield mounts the Synology over SMB and mostly works fine, until I try to play anything 4k - then I get stuttering. On the surface, this sounded like a network issue, but I can't find a problem w/ the LAN. My thought was to move the PMS to a single location w/ local storage, and use the Synology just as an archive.
ETA2: FWIW, I have not expanded the memory on the Synology or installed any cache drives.
Personally, I was shocked that they did the thing that people have been asking them to do for years. I expected them to continue to dig their heels in and ship another halfstep / half-assed measure.
I think it's hilarious that people will buy an iPhone, iPad and Macbook and not realize the only thing that's different about them is the software. Any restriction is manufactured.
I've been running Home Assistant for about a year now and always installed every update as soon as it's released and never had any issues at all.
Yesterday some time in either the zwave js 15.6.0 or core 2025.6.0 update (I am too complacent and did them both in quick succession without testing anything) I lost my Zooz 800 zwave controller. Reloading HA didn't bring it back. I had unplug and replug the Zooz USB stick and then reload again.
I'm keeping an eye out for it. We first saw it on our way out to dinner. And I didn't see it when we came back about an hour later. Hopefully mama found it and got it home. It was barely bigger than a softball. I already know of a rehabber collective that I will call if I do see it again.

Interesting that they are going the subscription route and not selling these outright. It works because the comparison with the cost of a human looks so favorable. I'd expect to see this with humanoid robots too as they take over more and more human jobs.
Hey guys i have been using Navidrome to stream my music from my server and its been amazing. I primarily use YT Music because of discoverability so I have all of my "primary" playlists (about 8 of them really, but supporting a somewhat arbitrary limit would be nice) in YouTube.
Im looking for an automated way to download the music and keep my navidrome instance updated with a couple playlists. I started working on some Python script to handle it, but its just not working super well so i would prefer to use someone elses solution haha.
Anyone have any good recommendations? I tried this one but I couldn't actually find the music and it seems to only support one playlist at a time. It would also be nice to download the album art and set some ID3 tags too
Yeah I am using yt-dlp to download the music, and I can set that on a cronjob no problem.
I am specifically asking for better downloading (I don't want just the raw YouTube title most of the time), album art, and ID3 tagging. But that beets.io thing looks super cool! I might integrate that into my existing python scripting instead of trying to build it all out myself
Just to throw out an easy option: if the music is well-labeled on Youtube, you can get pretty close to that full suite with just yt-dlp by using --embed-thumbnail as a stand-in for album art, dumping your files with an “Artist - track - album” naming structure using the --output-template flag — then using an awk or python script as a second pass to add the artist/track/album names to each file as tags.
E: and in case it isn’t self-evident, you don’t have to give yt-dlp a URL for each track; it’ll work fine with a playlist URL.

Bots in Fortnite are no secret but it really has gotten bad, huh? I remember trying the game out some years ago, was annoyed by the obvious bots in my games and never touched it again after one session. Things must've gotten more downhill since.
I never even played fortnite, but i watched some videos on it, and it's pretty weird. I can just assume it's for children who don't care because they don't know and actually have a chance playing and winning. Marvel rivals put you in pity matches after you lost a game or two and it's ridiculous. It's just a waste of time. But even if the bots are so obvious, there are still teammates that go: let's go guys, we got this. They have a combined 3 kills and we have like 30 each. There is no reason playing this.
I want to see either a persistent rectangle box on the edges of the region being recorded (anything outside the box isn't recorded), or dim the parts of the screen that aren't being recorded. I looked for screen recorders for hyprland & wlroots and didn't find any with this functionality. wf-recorder + slurp works for me but I want a boundary visual.
